Humboldt Verse Modified Humboldt Undercut

Here we have a comparison on the original style Humboldt undercut verse the new age "modified" Humboldt undercut, along with a little history. The mill likes the square/flush cut butt because it is more efficient to saw lumber and has less waste.
When there was a need to have the tree doing special things as it fell, and the trees were huge, around here the "block" cut a.k.a. Humboldt undercut was prevalent. With the true Humboldt undercut, or block cut, it is much easier to not only control but also direct the tree in a way needed to accomplish the desired result. Snipes/scarfs were used daily to get the timing of when/how/where the tree actually hit the ground. I use all kinds, including the over hand/farmers face, in an attempt to get the tree to do what I might need or want.
The new age, or modified, Humboldt undercut is much faster to put in but not as accurate i.m.h.o.
For the record, I consider myself somewhere in the middle of the pack for both speed and accuracy. I also consider myself a medium sized old growth redwood faller as I was blessed enough to get a hold of some in the 14' to 16' range coming up on 30 years ago.
