@@Kevpert have you tried air roll on right stick? I found that to be a lot more intuitive and played that way for a year (although I switched back to digital DAR eventually). It does require changing around the rest of your button layout since you can't use the face buttons as much though. But you get to keep analog gas/brake on triggers too.
7:15 you absolutely speedran mastering that new control scheme I swear; it's insane how fast it's possible to get consistent- even in the cutting edge of the game- when you put your mind to it (also thanks again for the compliments!
@@Ganerrr Haha those Xbox bumpers... RIP. I'm just glad I got off of the SCUFs a few years back, because I would've easily spent another $1K on controllers since. Also, it was fun putting these methods to the test when taking several steps back in my mechs. Now I can confidently say, it works!
One thing that I realized after starting this training (I couldn't get ARL/ARR on the triggers because it completely broke my ability to dribble) with the slalom is that it forces you to get back to basics. I can keep myself in the air and go places with ARL as is but when you regularly force a stop on the rolling I immediately black out and can't get back into a no-air-roll aerial. Great training, thanks!
Air Roll and Powerslide: L1 Boost: R1 Jump: Square ARL / ARR: X / O Camera: Triangle Been practising fat thumb for a couple of years now, best 'back to basics' i ever did. i kinda evolved into current set up, but i've enjoyed having the ARL and ARR on buttons right next to each other, (as opposed to placing jump on X, where you have the freedom to squeeze either directional button plus jump out in a split second) because i can fat thumb between either button by now at any point instantly. i tend to be ARL prime, as it's next to the jump, but having both buttons available is an absolute blessing. Was Air Roll button only for years, was a mindfuck learning ARR/L, but 100% worth it. Kevpert has been an absolute rock for years, taught me so much, so good to see him back again. We must have a similar philosophy, there's no rush for me where i wanna go either in this game. i am, however, unashamedly terrible at it, but i don't care, i just love to learn, to surprise myself from one week to the next with some improvement or other. Playing is much more fun if you're not stressed and sweaty about winning all the time, really, the love of playing is what's kept me here for... nine... years... and i'm still trying to master the basics.... a whole lifetimes fun from one game... sweet... (Suddenly notices DualSense Edge exists...) "Oh look, shiny new paddle thing...!" *drool...
WHOA that's kinda Genius, I currently use Air Roll and Powerslide: L1 Boost: R1 Jump: x ARL / ARR: square / O Camera: Triangle but there is definitely some fat finger issues when I want to use air roll without holding jump. I'll be trying yours today as I really like arL/R on face buttons
Nevermind, its not genius. pressing jump and air roll right is nearly impossible if you don't play claw :( and i feel like a troglodyte playing claw LOL
I have been using air roll and air pitch on one joystick while having steering the other one. The reason was to use the analog control as much as possible and the control I've gained after two weeks is incredible. There's also a setting on steam where you can adapt the response curve for even finer details, i think it exists hor analog triggers too. Thanks for your vids they help me stick to the grind and always find better ways to improve my game ❤
I changed to trigger about 4 days ago for ARL and it's messed me up, even normal aerials feel weird which is strange as all I did was move my ARL from square to LT/LS. DAR TIPS - For my ARL peeps, you want to move your stick anticlockwise when combining movements, for ARR you'll move your stick clockwise. I found that learning DAR required me to spend a lot of time focusing on car control, once I knew how to aerial normal, backwards, left (side) and right (side) of my car, it made it easier for me to grasp DAR. I originally did this on the pillars map and then I discovered kevperts' old video for elite car control, where he used slolams map to do the same thing. FOR CONSOLE USERS - who are learning DAR, this is what I would suggest they do. 1. Figure 8 - Fly normal x 3 without crashing. 2. Figure 8 - Fly backwards x 3 without crashing. 3. Figure 8 - Fly Right (side) x 3 without crashing. 4. Figure 8 - Fly Left (side) x 3 without crashng. 5. Figure 8 - No Air Roll x 3 without crash. First do all 5 without ball cam, then do them with ball cam. First time doing this, I suggest feathering your boost as much as possible (roughly 0.5 seconds) at a time, the idea is to move around the pillars slowly, as you get comfortable with the controls, increase your boost hold time to about 1s and continue increasing it until you can hold it as close to indefinitely as you can get. Once you are comfortable doing all that we then jump to DAR. Steps 1 - 5 teach you the basic inputs for DAR, however this is static whereas DAR is dynamic as its constantly changing. 6. Figure 8 - ARL or ARR. You're basically doing what kevpert shows you at 2:32 except you don't have the luxury of low gravity but this is why you spent time training steps 1 - 5 as you'll know the inputs you just have to learn how to chain them together.
bruh i've had directional air roll on L2 for like a year now. and it wasnt ever dynamic... I put it on my stick then back to L2 (Trigger) and it became dynamic... forced to learn dynamic now ig but I'm down for it i really wanted to learn air roll right but I don't know if i want to have drive and right on same bind. The alternative of holding l2 with square (my ArL bind) just sounds like I would accidentally not work it in with my muscle memory. Ima use the alternate method then prob switch to R2 whenever I learn air roll right. I'll update yall on how I feel about alternate method after i get my first
I got 5 minutes 24 seconds after about 10 hours of training with air roll right (slightly a minute over my air roll left record but I dont play rings much, If you wanna know how i learned it so fast it's cause i binged and bc I already know air roll left so it felt more natural). I said
nah not worth it enough. but still pretty good. If they changed how dynamic airroll works for bind not on R2 then it'd def be better, literally should just be less pressure less speed. not reversed imo. helps with quick angles
I'm finally picking up the third and final air roll to start learning and hopefully get better aerial control. Got left on l1, and swapped air roll from l2 and put air roll right
I'm a huge fan and already adopted your camera settings. I’m upgrading to a PS5 controller and going to put in back paddles myself. I can choose between 2 back paddles or 4; which got me curious how you'd modify your current setup for four paddles usable with the middle finger, excluding simultaneous use of same-side paddles.
I tried using the back button pack you mentioned a while ago and found it uncomfortable for my hands. An alternative pack I found for the PS4 is the 'Collective Minds Strike Pack F.P.S.'. It's a similar price, the buttons seem to sit exactly where my third finger rests so is super comfortable for me.
@kevpert I been training aerial and it got to the point we’re it didn’t challenge me because I been using air roll left for a year but I skipped a lot of the fundamentals but when I was trying free airroll it helped me learn even better with airroll left it felt like I actually had black out moments and I been able to go from barley able to do double flip reset to almost doing them more consistently I just never realized how much it helped
Found another way to practice air roll(If you jave it bound to triggers) recently: Go into your favorite rings map and then choose the direction that you want to learn first Now start going through the map while spinning as slowly as needed and slowly ramp it up as you get used to the constantly changing orientations It's a bit odd but seems to help. Quick question, can you think of any negative aspects with doing this? Ex: bad muscle memory type things?
I've been working through the aerial car control training plans you outlined for the past few days and funnily enough I replaced freeplay air dribbles with Muzgard's ADC on 350g and level 10 is exactly what I'm stuck on!! Thank you so much for your videos, I only found your channel a few weeks ago and at least for me, you are the most helpful channel for improvement and I thank you so much for your help! Do you have a patreon or somewhere I can support you?
That is awesome! That level 10 is so fun once you master it. I don't have plans for a Patreon at the moment. It's just steady TH-cam growth I'm after. I appreciate just the likes, view, and comments really, that's more than enough :)
@@Kevpert I literally keep your videos on loop while I train so hopefully that helps then! Also, I'm d3 in 1s and have watched some of your 1s videos from about 6 years back. The one skill I think I'm missing that the top players had back then is the powerslide control. I think it's something that is really overlooked for newer players due to all the flashy stuff. Maybe a powerslide video could be helpful to some of your audience! It's just one button, but takes some time to get it down and some drills/shot packs or catches with powerslide would be helpful to, at the very least, me.
Steam controller here. The back paddles and dual stage triggers make it the best controller ever made for rocket league. Normal trigger is drive, the bottom click is jump. Many make it boost as well but i have mine jump. Now you have lots of buttons still open for dar.
i've been using both directional air roll buttons for over 4k hours now, but trying the ganer method you talk about on these workshop maps feels so impossible even after a few weeks of daily practice. i feel like i'm seeing no improvement and it feels like i've fundamentally misunderstood how to control my car in the air or something. in normal game circumstances i don't feel inadequate in the air, and i've even felt a decent amount of improvement when it comes to things like air dribbling in general. i wonder if you can think of any advice for me
You could go full boost without directional air roll first and then switch to dar with boost. Going full boost only facing forward in the rings has definitely helped me and I try with all sides before going with dar
You could try a couple intermediate steps, like tapping an air roll, or tapping boost at times. It doesn't have to be 100% the Ganer method at first. That's cool you're already seeing the benefits though!
I felt this for a long time until I watched Grifflicious' video. Starting by only turning the car when it hits a certain point in the revolution unlocked the idea for my brain.
I'm waiting for my backpaddle to be delivered. My intended keybinds are DAR on r stick, jump on right paddle, and ball cam on left paddle. Initially I thought cam control should be on r stick, but your settings changed my mind, and now I want to try r stick DAR.
I watched this video like 5 times already and I just wana say that I found my optimal controller settings by putting R2- gas, L2-brake/airroll right, R1-boost, L1- powerslide/normal airroll, X-jump, circle-arroll right, square-airroll left, triangle- ballcam
@kevpert I have a very important question. I’m using this since a year, but I notice I’m on a very big disadvantage when it come to wall dashing, especially when I have air roll right on gas and trying to wall dash from the left side, obviously I immediately jump opposite direction of the wall, how to counter this. I don’t want to change my settings again and mess up all my progress of learning till now. Would appreciate a ton, if you had a solution for it!!!! I’ve tried searching on Reddit and even tried thinking about double binding gas on a different button or maybe using normal air roll. But I’m not sure how to do it consistently. I would love some insight. Thanks 🙏🏽
Kevpert, thanks for this video. Question, what's up with the square deadzone? What do you see as the advantages/disadvantages of using that over the default deadzone?
I've just been using it for... 6 years now? It's just something I prefer, not much of an advantage, more of a preference. The only real use for it is the Maktuf reset. You need it for that.
I have air roll left on square ⬛ air roll right on circle ⭕ powerslide/normal air roll on L1 and boost on R1 I think is pretty good Jump is obviously on X and u can press ⬛ or ⭕ fast after that So i think its a good option But i mainly use air roll left Right is for half flip only tbh
yeah I switch air roll to triangle/y and put ball cam on square/x, I think that feels more natural for your thumb positioning. Bumper boost/slide is super good if you hold with your index finger and use your middle finger for triggers.
I’m silver but I can hang with diamonds. Listening to you and watching your vids help a lot. Some videos targeted specifically for lower level players would be nice
@@Kevpert good question, I’d have to give it some thought and get back to you. I just feel there is a certain gap that exisits between my world and your word. It’s hard for me to bridge that gap.
Hey there! If you can beat Dribble Overhaul 2 in under 10 minutes, Leth's giant rings facing forwards, backwards, left & right in under 15 minutes, train Kevpert's recovery video and use the low gravity air dribbles, you should have enough car control to start directional air roll and begin on advanced mechanics. Best of luck! @@gadg9946
When I got to Plat I learned about Directional Air Roll. Never used much of Normal Air Roll. Once I started practicing DAR I couldn't use Normal Air Roll anymore. So I've been using both directions since. I don't feel like I'm missing out on not having it aside from sideways wavedashes. Binding Powerslide to both directions has helped that though.
@kevpert thanks for the vids! I see you bound the paddles to NAR/Powerslide and swivel right. Don't the paddles themselves map to other buttons on the controller and not give you additional inputs? I have the same DS4 paddle set that you have and on the settings in the back I only see options to set them to the face buttons, triggers, etc.
I map them to the DPAD Left/Right; they look like arrows on the backscreen. Had to move some bakkesmod bindings around (like prev/next shot in custom training) and removed the quick chats, but that's all. Not a loss at all.
In the video kevpert says that it’s best to bind air roll left and right on both paddles. When using the Sony paddles does rocket league register it as left and right paddles or does it just use the button to whatever button you mapped to the paddle, because that’s how it works on my Xbox elite controller.
It doesn't register as paddles, it registers to whatever button you map it to. So for me, it thinks left paddle is DPAD Left. But you can map it to pretty much anything.
hey Kev! long time no check-in. gotta fix that i bought a controller called the gamersir t4 kaleid. has 2 back buttons, is overclockable to 1000hz, and has magnetic hall effect thumbsticks. normal potentiometer thumbsticks have contact patches that wear down over time, the magnets don’t wear down = no stick drift. the back buttons aren’t remappable to keyboard buttons or anything so you have to make them, like, R3 and the options button or something like that. or a d-pad button and forgo some quick chat, or only have save replay bound to a keyboard key or something. it’s incredible for only $40 tho (PC and switch only). some very exciting third party controllers coming down the line last i was playing, months and months ago, DAR seemed a new concept and everyone seemed to hate zen and he was banned. i missed his whole meteoric rise. the game is entirely, entirely different now. i’m grinding ranked again and am hard stuck 1600. it’s wild. love having the perspective of everything that changes though, what a game this is curious on DAR. you know that if you turn off gravity, and use throttle/brake, your car will move slightly forward or backward right? like there’s some benefit to throttle while flying, maybe. never would have assumed to have DAR on triggers. tempted to try that, but also tempted for DAR on right stick… you know how important camera movement is though. you miss out on *something* no matter what, huh? wild
@@HazardousFC Yooo! Well if it isn't one of my favorite ever teammates. I knew who you were the first second I saw that iconic profile pic! That looks like a solid controller from my quick google search. I actually got to see Zen in person in Boston! I was with the OpTic team... idk if you know this but Greg is their coach, so I worked as their analyst for Spring. Dude's unreal and the crowd hype for him was insane. And I get up every day and think about how amazing this game is! Yeah, I'm aware of the throttle/brake effect in the air, but it's so minute, I don't really consider it. The thing with my settings is I moved all the right stick commands on to different buttons. A lot of people have been mentioning DAR on right stick and that seems doable if you have paddles for look left/look right...
@@Kevpertoh that’s awesome! the boston major was the one just a few days ago right? congrats to you and greg, super cool you helped him and were involved and stuff so you have no commands at all on the right stick? kinda casually getting back into it, i’m doing jump on A, look right/left/up on X/B/Y, DAR right stick left and right, rear view R3 boost R1, powerslide/air roll L1, throttle/brake L2/R2, and then ball cam and look down on the back buttons. unfortunately the controller doesn’t allow remapping to standalone buttons. the back paddles have to be other buttons. so back buttons are mapped as SHARE and L3. which means save replay is hold DPAD left and scoreboard is DPAD up, but it’s fine. seems fun so far! probably better to put jump on the back button with this setup but i don’t have the muscle control for jumping with a ring finger, haha might shoot you a message soon, curious what you’ve been up to lately!
the discovery made further up where you can have like. air roll left on L2 and air roll right on X, and then modulate air roll right not individually, but by how much air roll left you’re inputting with L2 is absolutely wild. very cool, but wild
@Goalie-wi5zb sounds like a good setup! Yeah let's def do a call sometime. I wanna see how you're liking the DAR on right stick aside from catching up. I pretty much have nothing on right stick. It's too cumbersome to life my thumb off the face buttons to reach over.
Yo, ive heard that "holding gas while aerialing/getting a reset is bad because it can make your car land weird and wavedash off." I am not sure if this is true, but if I have air roll left bound to L2 and brake bound to L2, does that basically do the same thing as holding gas while getting a reset? (I am not sure if it is best to hold both because of this, but I feel like I fly off my resets or get wavedashes of the ball often).
@kevpert when do you use swivel down/up? I decided to bind them because you have and I had a couple of spare buttons, but not sure atm when to use them for most effect. Have noticed they seem to help a bit on the wall with judging if the ball is close or not. And sometimes in aerials it feels kinda helpful too. Any advice?
If any of you Xbox controller players need remappable buttons but don't wanna go crazy with the budget, I have the: Razer Wolverine Ultimate Officially Licensed Xbox One Controller: 6 Remappable Buttons and Triggers - Interchangeable Thumbsticks and D-Pad - For PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S - Black. It's $81 and it's super nice, it's lasted a long time (I have bad RS stickdrift, but other than that it's worked and felt great)
If i feel like keeping the default settings, and adding AR left on L1, will that be a problem to improve? I know that changing the controls might might lead to better improvements, but is that super necessary?
I really love my controls, and no paddles are needed, though I would love one for rear cam: Y/B for air roll left/right X ball cam, A jump right bumber boost left bumper powerslide I don't use air roll with the stick so I leave that unbound, but you could bind it to left bumper if needed. And scoreboard I stick on the share button. Very comfortable on a DS4 although would probably prefer the left stick and dpad swapped. I have used them for years and switched most people I know over to them when I convince them to give it a chance :P.
My biggest concern about putting a directional air roll on the right trigger is that you lose the extra small amount of speed during aerials that you’d normally get by holding gas while in the air (assuming you want to leave gas on the trigger). I forget how much of a speed increase you get, I wanna say like a few %… Is that why you decided to put gas on R1 instead?
I think you gotta try it out to see for yourself. It felt really intuitive from the get go, and I bet some pros are gonna use this rlcs off-season to test it out too.
@@Kevpert I have tried it out just never had the guts to commit to it, once this season ends I think i am going to make the switch! Do you think it is also worth learning ARR? I have ARL pretty mastered, but I would be starting from 0 with ARR
idk, I'd say that this is super advanced, even past the point of pro skill ceiling. we don't see pros using these binds, so can it really be beneficial? idk. I could definitely see myself putting ARL on LB instead of powerslide and normal airrol, then learning to play claw like JSTN, but this idea is super out there.
It's not out there, it's just cutting edge. Zen is the best player in the world, and he's only really been known for 6 months to a year now. Yanxnz is another player who's used Air Roll Left on L2. That's 2 of the top 5 mechanical players in the world right now.
Kevpert ever since this has became popular am I the only one that’s noticed that you no longer can have a dynamic air role. As soon as L2 is pressed it immediately goes full speed or am I trippin
@slimittRL it's affected by aerial sensitivity. To actually notice an effect, you need it below 1.50 in game. If you want it higher, you can set stick sensitivity through ds4windows and set your in game sens to 1.0
@@Kevpert I’ve tried everything I’m not sure what it is. Little under a year ago it was fine but now it’s a static input no matter what sense I use and it only activates once I’ve fully pressed L2.
Imo lowering the game speed makes learning directional air roll way easier than lowering the gravity because it gives your brain time to figure out what input does what to your car. Then you slowly increase the game speed.
that difference in speed is so small it doesnt really matter, but if you do want to eliminate it entirely you can just hold whatever your throttle is and it cancels it out. Boosting also cancels it out. I've done a lot of practice with dynamic DAR and if anything the subtle control you get with your airroll will actually see you getting to the ball more efficiently there's also a pretty niche use for the slowing down, when I'm chaining rapid resets slowing down slightly in the air and getting resets while essentially holding reverse means that the ball stays in front of me for more consistent follow ups hope that helps
Can we use dar, without paddle ? L2 for air roll left + going backwards and circle for air roll right ? I use : L1 : normal Air Roll + PowerSlide L2 : drive backward + air roll left O : Air Roll Right
No, you dont understand because I was thinking of getting off this game for good, chanced upon this video at 1 am, and i'm drawing up an actual solid plan to improve other than the literally insane ideology of "queueing games till i get better"
I currently have the square as a "dead button" I have it on ARL (when I just started learning half-flips) but since then I changed other bindings to have AirRoll/PowerSlide on L1 and ARR on R1 and I use ARR for both aerial car control and half/speed flips. I'm considering changing between square and L1 to gain access again to ARL (it's hard for me to boost with circle while holding square) but I'm concerned it will hurt my ability to do air-roll shots :(
Hello, I've changed my binds recently and I think they migth be the best ones yet, check it out: L1 : Engine R1: Boost L2: AR Left R2: AR Rigth Square: Jump Triangle: Drift (also paddle) Circle: Brake (2nd paddle) Cross: Ball Cam, tell me wath you think of it, and do I realy need Free AR if I have those binds?
Until the crappy dualsense gives out and you get stick drift because you bought yet another awful controller without a hall effect sensor. And then you have to do your controller surgery again on another dualsense.
Issue of having air roll on L2 is I have a tendency of keeping L2 held when lets say you drive backward and want to aerial backward. As soon you leave the groud you would have to release L2 to not start tuning. I curently only can use directional air roll left in the air but I can tell im lacking something. Also i cant half flip straight while boostinf on both sides cause my air roll right is on square and i cant boost while holding it argghh changing controls feels like such a pain when your not that young 😅
@@Kevpert Awesome. I'm usually around Champ II with just dynamic AR. I've known for awhile that I need to work in directional ARs, but the thought of rebinding seemed terrible. Pedals would be amazing for this old Dad-gamer.
Ngl this hasn’t helped me I’ve been doing it for a week not got any more control in the air and my actual gameplay like just driving I cant do it at all
An Xbox One Elite Controller is a large investment, but the reason I'll never go back to anything else is because it has FOUR paddles on the back. That means you can bind all the face buttons (A, X, B, Y) to the back of your controller and have both thumbs on the thumbsticks and all eight fingers on a dedicated button/trigger at all times. The analogue control options are the triggers and the joysticks, so I have brake and accelerate on the triggers, steering (yaw) and pitch control on the left thumbstick, and air roll on the right analogue stick. Then I have everything else on the six binary buttons (jump, boost, powerslide, ball cam, camera pan left/right). All the controls that benefit from being analogue, I have on analogue inputs. All the rest are always accessible with my dedicated finger resting on the button. IMO, these are the most optimal controls. They eliminate the drawbacks and sacrifices necessary in other control schemes. If it's still unclear what I'm saying, these are my specific controls: Steering, pitch, and air roll are controlled by my thumbs on the analogue sticks. Jump and boost are controlled by my index fingers on the bumpers. Accelerate and brake are controlled by my middle fingers on the triggers. Powerslide and ball cam are controlled by my ring fingers on the top back paddles. Camera pan left and right is controlled by my pinky fingers on the lower back paddles.
Have you had issues with the bumpers breaking? I remember that used to be the case with Xbox Elites. Maybe the newer models are a little more solid. That's actually an incredibly cool control scheme. I might've done that had I thought about the sticks when the game first came out.
why should i learn both air rolls. I almost mastered Air roll left now im learning free air roll but idk how to use it effectively (i only use free air roll for recovery)
For your average non-pro player is it fine to just have one or should we really opt for both? Also does anyone know of an attachment which adds buttons to an xbox controller?
Most pros only have one. But I really do recommend having two. Xbox doesn't have official attachments unless you go Xbox elite. That's why I prefer the DS4.
having drive forward not on a trigger is a huge trade off. it's dynamic too and thats mean you can't go forward by increment anymore, thats mean harder shadow defense and dribble.
I use square and circle to air roll on 10 sens and I have no issue being accurate, I can't believe you recommend to just get used to drive forward on a button instead of air roll on a button and call it best settings XD
Hmm, isn't 10 sens practically keyboard inputs at that point? You're hitting max speed on all of your aerial inputs... just like using drive on a button or key.
Does anyone know i can fix my texture for the slolom map? Mine is purple and white and doesnt look clean. I can deal with it honestly but some of my other maps have the same problem and it would be awesome to know how to fix it. Thsnk you :)
By the way @kevpert can you explain the use of normal air roll, I've had it unequipped for over 2 years and cant see where I would reincorporate it back into my gameplay, thanks 👍
That's your neutral or joystick air roll where when pressed, will make it so that your joystick will tilt the car vertically if you pull the stick back or push it forward and will roll the car left or right with similar stick movements
Alright one thing I always fail to understand is the use of free/normal air roll, if using directional. And that's a genuine thing, like why would you use a different air roll method to archive certain things that you also can do with directional air roll? Every single thing you can do with free air roll you can do better with air roll left+right. I get why you would use it if you only have bound air roll left or right, but if you have both? Makes literally 0 sense to me. Edit: Additionally just finished the video and came back to my comment, saw the air dribble part and I have my own methodology about practice and what not, but I am always looking for different and new ways to improve so I can enhance my approach. The gravity portion regarding air dribble had me intrigued. Changing your game speed for practice purposes clearly messes with the perception of the game speed after your initial training for roughly 2-3 games, I personally don't use bakkes mod, as I see little to no use for me personally, so I can't confirm and have to ask, does low gravity practice affect your gameplay/sense the same way changing game speed does, for a period of time after your routine?
Low gravity means the physics stay pretty similar. It's just the ball and car are a little lighter. That's all. Slowmo changes the physics and in my experience wasn't helpful. I just use normal air roll + powerslide only on the ground, for recoveries. That's literally the only time I use it. I find that superior to using ARL + powerslide, because I like to hold the button while jumping.
@@Kevpert wow wasn't expecting an awnser awesome, but unfortunately it didn't quite awnser my question: does practice with low gravity change how the game "feels" for a period after the initial training routine? (Maybe I could have specified previous). That aside for a second, isn't it actually the other way around, changing game speed keeps the game physics exactly the same and only affects, well the speed... while changing the gravity actually changes the physics on how the ball and car gets affected by gravity... And thanks for your time much appreciated 😁👍
I love your content, but you have to admit you have a very unorthodox setup camera and control wise. Even seeing that you use circle to boost and X to jump is uncomfortable to me and all my friends, if anything it would be square to boost as thumb can rest over those 2 buttons easier than X and circle, but even that is awkward to me. If you want to use 2 of the 4 main buttons for jump/boost I find it best to use X as boost, and square as jump, this makes it super easy to fast aerial. tl;dr - using X + circle for jump/boost is awkward. I prefer X + square. And I prefer having jump on square and boost on X - makes for easier fast aerials.
I agree with square over circle. I do use 3 face buttons, so it's a little awkward, but I have 7 years of muscle memory there. I saw Squishy made that change a few months back too, just for the better ergonomics, I guess.
fun fact you only need one dynamic airroll bind to control both directions for example i have airroll left on trigger and my airoll right on x ps4=Square i can hold that and slightly press the trigger and i can manipulate the non trigger x/square bind for anyone who thinks about switching grate video kevpert👍👍
Whaaat? That's a crazy find. I just tried it and it works in a backwards kinda way, where you hit max roll speed and then slow down. Incredibly cool!
That'd be insane to master though lol
@@Kevpert have you tried air roll on right stick? I found that to be a lot more intuitive and played that way for a year (although I switched back to digital DAR eventually). if anyone is wondering about my controller scheme it involves putting boost on a bumper and spending $10⁴²/s on repeatedly replacing said bumper
Great philosophy. Listening to you while watching the video was just excellent
it's rare to see someone using the most accurate octane hitbox car in the game.
As always thanks for the work you’ve put into this Kev! Always love seeing a new video drop from you 🎉
Air Roll and Powerslide: L1
Boost: R1
Jump: Square
ARL / ARR: X / O
Camera: Triangle
Been practising fat thumb for a couple of years now, best 'back to basics' i ever did. i kinda evolved into current set up, but i've enjoyed having the ARL and ARR on buttons right next to each other, (as opposed to placing jump on X, where you have the freedom to squeeze either directional button plus jump out in a split second) because i can fat thumb between either button by now at any point instantly. i tend to be ARL prime, as it's next to the jump, but having both buttons available is an absolute blessing.
Playing is much more fun if you're not stressed and sweaty about winning all the time, really, the love of playing is what's kept me here for... nine... years... and i'm still trying to master the basics.... a whole lifetimes fun from one game... sweet...

WHOA that's kinda Genius, I currently use
Air Roll and Powerslide: L1
Boost: R1
Jump: x
ARL / ARR: square / O
Camera: Triangle
but there is definitely some fat finger issues when I want to use air roll without holding jump.
I should add drive forward and backward is on a joystick as well so I have no tradeoff other than the adaptation
Other way round pal
@@jake.5877 Nope. Air Roll Left is Anti-Clockwise (also known as counterclockwise), Air Roll Right is clockwise.
as a console player, i thank you alot, ill definitely try this (will update with progress IF i remember or someone pings me)

@@sethpantz8176 losfeld airrol method. the vid will explain
bruh i've had directional air roll on L2 for like a year now. and it wasnt ever dynamic... I put it on my stick then back to L2 (Trigger) and it became dynamic... forced to learn dynamic now ig but I'm down for it
i really wanted to learn air roll right but I don't know if i want to have drive and right on same bind.
Watching Kevpert talk about air roll...what is this 2019?❤
I'm back to it this season too, first since 2019 - kevpert videos, squishy playing RLCS - it's like nothing has changed!
It's a similar price, the buttons seem to sit exactly where my third finger rests so is super comfortable for me.
this was so helpful thank you. although since i'm on PS5 i don't have access to workshop maps. changing the gravity is a huge tip though !!
I have ARL/R on my right stick (and power slide and boost on triggers). I love it, it just feels incredibly natural and comfortable.
Same this is such an underrated control scheme
I also have jump bound on right stick click and ball cam on left stick click
Ganer method map pleaseeee
Found another way to practice air roll(If you jave it bound to triggers) recently:
Go into your favorite rings map and then choose the direction that you want to learn first
Now start going through the map while spinning as slowly as needed and slowly ramp it up as you get used to the constantly changing orientations
It's a bit odd but seems to help.
@@ItsDaaes Hmm, might have a pack just for this. I used to train this a ton back in the day.
As a fellow R1 boost enjoyer with no paddles, I love you
@kevpert
I have a very important question.
I use the right analog stick for right and left air roll. Very precise. I never used my camera anyway.
I have air roll left on square ⬛ air roll right on circle ⭕ powerslide/normal air roll on L1 and boost on R1
I think is pretty good
Jump is obviously on X and u can press ⬛ or ⭕ fast after that
So i think its a good option
But i mainly use air roll left
Right is for half flip only tbh
yeah I switch air roll to triangle/y and put ball cam on square/x, I think that feels more natural for your thumb positioning. Bumper boost/slide is super good if you hold with your index finger and use your middle finger for triggers.
thats what i use right now aswell, but jump doesnt seem accessible when im already using air roll in the air

Wait how do you bind powerslide to both?
@@fredrikkarlsson1021 go into the TA folder and add a new "handbrake" bind.
@@Kevpert That makes so much sense! Thank you :D
great video
In the video kevpert says that it’s best to bind air roll left and right on both paddles. When using the Sony paddles does rocket league register it as left and right paddles or does it just use the button to whatever button you mapped to the paddle, because that’s how it works on my Xbox elite controller.
It doesn't register as paddles, it registers to whatever button you map it to. So for me, it thinks left paddle is DPAD Left. But you can map it to pretty much anything.
hey Kev! long time no check-in. gotta fix that
i bought a controller called the gamersir t4 kaleid. has 2 back buttons, is overclockable to 1000hz, and has magnetic hall effect thumbsticks. normal potentiometer thumbsticks have contact patches that wear down over time, the magnets don’t wear down = no stick drift. the back buttons aren’t remappable to keyboard buttons or anything so you have to make them, like, R3 and the options button or something like that. or a d-pad button and forgo some quick chat, or only have save replay bound to a keyboard key or something. it’s incredible for only $40 tho (PC and switch only). some very exciting third party controllers coming down the line
last i was playing, months and months ago, DAR seemed a new concept and everyone seemed to hate zen and he was banned. i missed his whole meteoric rise. the game is entirely, entirely different now. i’m grinding ranked again and am hard stuck 1600. it’s wild. love having the perspective of everything that changes though, what a game this is
curious on DAR. you know that if you turn off gravity, and use throttle/brake, your car will move slightly forward or backward right? like there’s some benefit to throttle while flying, maybe. never would have assumed to have DAR on triggers. tempted to try that, but also tempted for DAR on right stick… you know how important camera movement is though. you miss out on *something* no matter what, huh? wild

@@Kevpertoh that’s awesome! the boston major was the one just a few days ago right? congrats to you and greg, super cool you helped him and were involved and stuff
so you have no commands at all on the right stick?
kinda casually getting back into it, i’m doing jump on A, look right/left/up on X/B/Y, DAR right stick left and right, rear view R3 boost R1, powerslide/air roll L1, throttle/brake L2/R2, and then ball cam and look down on the back buttons. unfortunately the controller doesn’t allow remapping to standalone buttons. the back paddles have to be other buttons. so back buttons are mapped as SHARE and L3. which means save replay is hold DPAD left and scoreboard is DPAD up, but it’s fine. seems fun so far! probably better to put jump on the back button with this setup but i don’t have the muscle control for jumping with a ring finger, haha
might shoot you a message soon, curious what you’ve been up to lately!
the discovery made further up where you can have like. air roll left on L2 and air roll right on X, and then modulate air roll right not individually, but by how much air roll left you’re inputting with L2 is absolutely wild. very cool, but wild
Why did you take drive forward off of r2? Couldn't you just use that with drive forward and DAR bound onto it?
I really love my controls, and no paddles are needed, though I would love one for rear cam:
Y/B for air roll left/right
X ball cam, A jump
right bumber boost
left bumper powerslide
I don't use air roll with the stick so I leave that unbound, but you could bind it to left bumper if needed.
Bro pleeeease tell us the names of the training maps you are using❤
So is it worth changing my ARL to a trigger? How much of a improvement will I see?
I think you gotta try it out to see for yourself. It felt really intuitive from the get go, and I bet some pros are gonna use this rlcs off-season to test it out too.
@@Kevpert I have tried it out just never had the guts to commit to it, once this season ends I think i am going to make the switch! Do you think it is also worth learning ARR? I have ARL pretty mastered, but I would be starting from 0 with ARR
@HypeRL1 IMO it's a fun thing to learn. There's no rush with where I want to go in this game, so it made sense for me. Just depends on your goals!
@@Kevpert that sounds great! I love the channel, can’t wait to implement your training plan into my routine! Keep up the amazing work! ❤️
@@Kevpert also kev do you offer coaching? I love your teaching style and I am just wondering?
Is there a reason why you bound your camera swivel controls to buttons rather than just using right stick?
Never mind.. just saw the camera settings video haha
idk, I'd say that this is super advanced, even past the point of pro skill ceiling. we don't see pros using these binds, so can it really be beneficial?
So im a little late here, but doesnt pressing brake in midair slow you down? Wont that make your fast aerials slower so ull get beat more?
that difference in speed is so small it doesnt really matter, but if you do want to eliminate it entirely you can just hold whatever your throttle is and it cancels it out. Boosting also cancels it out.
I've done a lot of practice with dynamic DAR and if anything the subtle control you get with your airroll will actually see you getting to the ball more efficiently
there's also a pretty niche use for the slowing down, when I'm chaining rapid resets slowing down slightly in the air and getting resets while essentially holding reverse means that the ball stays in front of me for more consistent follow ups
hope that helps
Can we use dar, without paddle ?
L2 for air roll left + going backwards and circle for air roll right ?
I use :
L1 : normal Air Roll + PowerSlide
L2 : drive backward + air roll left
O : Air Roll Right
That would work I think. It'd work with Boost on R1, right?
@@Kevpert Right
sorry for asking but as a beginner which training pack/ tutorial should i start with?
Definitely start with the "Car Control Training Plans" video.
No, you dont understand because I was thinking of getting off this game for good, chanced upon this video at 1 am, and i'm drawing up an actual solid plan to improve other than the literally insane ideology of "queueing games till i get better"
Can we make any button adaptive & use it instead of R2 & L2 ?
I currently have the square as a "dead button"
I have it on ARL (when I just started learning half-flips) but since then I changed other bindings to have AirRoll/PowerSlide on L1 and ARR on R1 and I use ARR for both aerial car control and half/speed flips.
I'm considering changing between square and L1 to gain access again to ARL (it's hard for me to boost with circle while holding square) but I'm concerned it will hurt my ability to do air-roll shots :(
Watch out for kevpert pro league mans on a mission 👀
I picked my bindings when I was around plat level and got to around c3 before I realized I have the same binds as appjack
Hello, I've changed my binds recently and I think they migth be the best ones yet, check it out:
L1 : Engine
R1: Boost
L2: AR Left
R2: AR Rigth
Square: Jump
Triangle: Drift (also paddle)
Circle: Brake (2nd paddle)
Cross: Ball Cam, tell me wath you think of it, and do I realy need Free AR if I have those binds?
Hey kevpert great video but next video can you do a tutorial for powerslide
I gotchu! Hope you enjoyed the new vid :D
For Dualsense folks you can also get an Extreme rate remap kit with 2/4 paddles. Another cheap option (Under $50) 😊
Until the crappy dualsense gives out and you get stick drift because you bought yet another awful controller without a hall effect sensor. And then you have to do your controller surgery again on another dualsense.
@@cmdrfunk That's the trade-off for cheaper paddles 🥲
But the metal version feels pretty decent imo
Issue of having air roll on L2 is I have a tendency of keeping L2 held when lets say you drive backward and want to aerial backward. As soon you leave the groud you would have to release L2 to not start tuning. I curently only can use directional air roll left in the air but I can tell im lacking something. Also i cant half flip straight while boostinf on both sides cause my air roll right is on square and i cant boost while holding it argghh changing controls feels like such a pain when your not that young 😅
Are there any rules in comp against foot pedals for air roll?
Nope, you can do setups like that.
@@Kevpert Awesome. I'm usually around Champ II with just dynamic AR. I've known for awhile that I need to work in directional ARs, but the thought of rebinding seemed terrible. Pedals would be amazing for this old Dad-gamer.
map name on the Ganer method?
What is the name of the last training map?
If it's still unclear what I'm saying, these are my specific controls:
Steering, pitch, and air roll are controlled by my thumbs on the analogue sticks.
I might've done that had I thought about the sticks when the game first came out.
can i bind drive foward and air roll right both on r2?
I mean you can. It'd make walldashing problematic though, because you're going to auto dodge right when you attempt it.
why should i learn both air rolls. I almost mastered Air roll left now im learning free air roll but idk how to use it effectively (i only use free air roll for recovery)
There are some angles where it's easier to rotate, say 90 degrees on way, rather than go 270 degrees using the other air roll.
@@Kevpert its hard using it mid air after using air roll left for so long but im trying
@@Kevpert In that case I guess I'm whipping out my dualshock. I'm actually a GC1 just learning directional air roll so great timing lol. Thanks!
having drive forward not on a trigger is a huge trade off. it's dynamic too and thats mean you can't go forward by increment anymore, thats mean harder shadow defense and dribble.
That's why it's all preference.
Just switched to zens air roll lol rip my skills for now lol
rings map code?
Does anyone know i can fix my texture for the slolom map? Mine is purple and white and doesnt look clean. I can deal with it honestly but some of my other maps have the same problem and it would be awesome to know how to fix it. Thsnk you :)

@@Kevpert youre the man. Havent seen an upload in a minute. Hope everything is okay. Wish nothing but the besr for you
AR left on L2. AR right on R1, normal Air roll on L1.
You dont miss
Already on l and r but I guess I'm moving them from bumpers to triggers time to hate myself for a week 👍
By the way @kevpert can you explain the use of normal air roll, I've had it unequipped for over 2 years and cant see where I would reincorporate it back into my gameplay, thanks 👍
ok! vou tentar no L2........
What’s normal air roll
And thanks for your time much appreciated 😁👍
gamesir controllers have back paddles and arent too expensive
Me on switch 🗿🗿🗿🔥🔥😈
hey man could you make a video on rl cars?
Rip
Keyboard players
Bumper boost is also fun, been using that for years
I agree with square over circle. I do use 3 face buttons, so it's a little awkward, but I have 7 years of muscle memory there. I saw Squishy made that change a few months back too, just for the better ergonomics, I guess.
.
so is Free AR = R1, ARL = L2 and ARR = L1 bindings that hit all three of those rules?
