I saw Bad Brains at the University of Buffalo in the '80s and after the first song, a tech guy came out and duct taped HR to a desk. The rest of the gig he was bouncing all over the stage taped to that thing. I always wondered what was up with that. Thanks Darryl.
I saw the Bad Brains at the University of Buffalo on that tour. I think it was 1988. All I could see most of the show HR's hair flying up and down. Finally got close enough to see the school desk. They still rocked.
I talked to a guy at Pittsburgh Guitars who saw the Brains at Carnegie Mellon University in their prime, he told me they brought HR out, taped to an old school desk going berserk. Glad Darryl got to elaborate on the story.
Ah man, I was at that show! They told us that he had 'hurt himself' at a gig the day before and so that's why he was taped down. But by the end of the show he had wrangled himself out of the tape and did a most excellent stage dive onto the crowd (which must have hurt if he had a hernia). The other thing I remember from the show was being the mosh pit with skinheads during the hardcore numbers - and then we were all skanking around like Rastafarians during the reggae numbers! Totally surreal - and one of my favorite shows.
I saw Darryl Jennifer in the 80's while cruising around Richmond Virginia on my skateboard. Odd thing is I saw HR at a party when Gwar played at Cedar Crest on top the half pipe. We were in the cat walks drinking beer and stuff. Ian McKay was there in the crowd and Jay Henry smoked that half pipe earlier in the day. 1988 before the roof/cover was installed over the half pipe. Awesome experience.
HR is the baddest muthafucka on the planet and he knows it. The Bad Brains took Punk and sent that shit to Mars! There is NO other band with the influence on hardcore punk that these beautiful black men had. They stay golden.
I was at one of the famous chair shows (around 88 I'm thinking) when they played the Token Lounge in Detroit. I can't tell the story as well as Mr. Jennifer, but this is crazy. Before they launched into their set, the techs using leather belts, the same kind used to keep your pants up ( when that was popular ) and just before they started their set someone put a joint in HR's hands which were bound to the arms of the chairs so he couldn't smoke it even if he wanted to. Someone lit it and it burned down to nothing while it was between his fingers, unreal.
centralscrutinizer66 I remember hearing about him taping himself to chairs in the 80's in Jr. High School. I heard he brought out his g/f on stage one night, handcuffed to her for the while show.
Sweet! The funny thing about HR that people may or may not be aware of. HR was a true "cocksman" meaning that he was extremely popular with the ladies sexually. Before HR claimed that HR meant human rights, it was a nickname given to him by the people who knew him standing for Hunting Rod. HR was taking premed courses before the band became popular and he dropped out of school. Look at early footage and you'll see he was built like an athlete and when not on stage (and on a little down the road) extremely well dressed. I don't question your story, because he did some really crazy shit, like delaying a show for 7 hours in Philly because they didn't have weed and wouldn't go on without it. The BBs have a long history and I don't doubt anything. I never heard that he handcuffed himself to a female, but if that was the case it was probably a wild ride and a sore wrist for her.
My one interaction with HR was when he'd just moved to El Paso. Outside the venue after his show he was walking by and I said, "Great show, my man!" to which he replied without missing a beat or step and said "Yes, Sir!" as he kept walking past. Legend.
Does anybody know where I can find a recording of one of those shows? Knowing how batshit insane HR could get onstage, it would be amazing to see him strapped to a chair going ballistic!
Alex Rees Not a lot of Bad Brains footage because their shows would get so batshit nuts, filming in the venue was damn near impossible with people flying all over the place.
Saw the brains at the international 1 venue in mqnchester i think it was 89? There were punks, rasta's and rockers moshing dancing.....smoking!! One of the best gigs of my life, all for one one for all.\,,/
What an absolute legend, just as an old Bad Brains fan i love this guy in a total fanboy way, i don't care man Bad Brains are one my fav bands of all time, it sucks i will never get to see them perform back in the 80s.
A post-industrial shaman weaving the spirit of the scene together with melody, rhythm, energy, grit and sincerity. Thanks for the story... thanks for the music.
blisterpacman, maybe because "Biscuit" pulled some stupid shit. He pissed off his other band members at the time enough that even they wouldn't continue in the band with him: "After a Bad Brains show in Austin that ended in controversy involving Biscuit (and later inspired the songs "Brickwall" and "Pay to Come Along" by MDC), conflicts began to arise within the band, specifically between Biscuit and Chris. The Big Boys played their last show very unexpectedly. Biscuit and Chris never spoke to each other again."
Yo,,,,, I was at one of their shows in Buffalo and I was witness to that school chair and HR did half the set taped up to that shit....un freakin believable !!!!!!
The last time I saw them at CBs he came out with a blacked out motorcycle helmet on and just stood there when the band started. It was sad. He really has lost it. A far cry from the early eighties HR.
They were fans of GO-GO! They talk about it in a recent documentary how they were building off GO GO and going more hardcore with it, they said the American GOGO dance was the mosh

"Maybe this is some punk rock shit I don't know about." LMAO The Mighty Mighty Bad Brains!!!
Daryl is so fucking cool
We agree! If you enjoyed Daryl's bit, you can check out the rest of the Classic Tales videos here: bit.ly/2bbPXSV
"We the Bad Brains. We got to be blazing." :)
There was a degree of intensity to the Bad Brains live shows that few other punk bands could replicate.
None, respect the pioneers.
The only band that came close was Fishbone in their prime
This is so far one of the best episodes yet
Spencer Will yesssss
@@vans what the fuck
Darry is so down to earth. Like the way he starts all frazzled, like he needs a hit, before talking much. HR is epic..
This animation along with the way Darryl tells the story is totally on point
bad brains is one of the sickest bands
I saw Bad Brains at the University of Buffalo in the '80s and after the first song, a tech guy came out and duct taped HR to a desk. The rest of the gig he was bouncing all over the stage taped to that thing. I always wondered what was up with that. Thanks Darryl.

The sad shit is; that's just the tip of the iceberg when HR and crazy shit is concerned.

"everyone knows HR can be eccentric..." is the best line EVER!!!
Biggest Understatement...
I love to think he said, "You're going to have to ducktape me to the chair because there's no way I will be able to stop myself."
I don’t know why but Daryl’s impression of HR had me in tears especially when they had that music in the background 😂 😂 😂 😂
Seen a thousand live shows...never seen better than this band....ever
Punk as fuck, guys suffering from a hernia and still puts on a gig!
Thanks bad brains for having that ATTITUDE!!
These are the best I like how half the thing is the begining

not in Detroit, where it's half tobacco and half shake.
This was in the eighties, weed was different then. It was far from sticky icky and wrought with seeds, can't believe I smoked it.
I have all CD‘s since early 90‘ and two LP‘s from the 80‘. I love this band. Greetings from Germany 😊
I smoked weed him and the rest of the band at the Santa Monica Civic when they opened for Discharge in 1982.

I'm so envious! He guy must have had some nuclear-powered blood or something coursing through his veins.
HR in his time was and still is the best singer I have ever seen and argueably the best there ever was.
Please do more of these with Bad Brains!
best tale ever. maybe the only one worth watching so far.
