Great video. I would recommend that before closing it all up connect the switch and the cables and try the key first so you don't have to open it all up again. Haven't read all the comments. Someone probably already mentioned that
Thanks for the video! My personal experience with a non-starting SAAB (and solution) described below. Please read all before starting any steps, as I did encounter problems. But seems like this is the right thing to do for 'steering wheel lock' and other issues. I had been having problems with my SAAB 9-3 Aero (2009). I was getting the steering wheel lock malfunction, then the door lock/unlock functions started to screw up and not work using my key fobs, then it seemed like even though I had removed the key the car still thought the key was in (open door caused warning chime, possibly also causing a slow battery drain?). Eventually the key would not turn past lock. Unplugging the battery, waiting 5-15 minutes and then trying again did not seem to change much, but I could often get my car to start by removing and reinserting the key quickly and vigorously until something happened. Batteries in the fobs were fine. I read a comment suggesting that an old dirty Ignition Switch Module (ISM) could be causing it and saw the related videos on TH-cam. - I unplugged both terminals on the battery (some have suggested not doing that) - Removed the ISM - Cleaned (mostly with isopropyl alcohol) and re-tensioned the switch prongs to ensure good connections - Put it back together and plugged in the battery Still a problem: Without the key being in the car, the daytime running lights came on. No more steering wheel lock warning, but I could not turn the key past lock. Somehow the car thought the key was still there when it wasn’t (??). I unplugged the battery again (maybe just the negative?) to avoid a drained battery. My solution was to: - Remove the ISM again, - Manually pull back the pin on the bottom of the ISM that normally prevents the key from turning so the key can be inserted and turned to the ON position. - Put they key into the ISM while it has not yet been installed in the car, turning it to ON position. - Plug in the car battery again - Plug the ISM together with key in ON position back into the car

@@sigmamale7241 Hi. I moved the locking spring to get the key into the ON position while the the ISM module was not yet installed. I think the locking pin doesn't spring back and lock when the key is in at the ON position. It seems that starting with the key in the ON position worked to get me past the locking pin and crank it (if I recall correctly). At the time my car thought that it was on (sort of?) even before the crank. But I believe it was the re-tensioning of the ISM prongs that did most of the important work.

I followed your video step by step and was able to get it done without major hiccups, and saving a ton of money I'm sure. The only suggestions I would add are: 1) A must - Disconnect the car battery terminals as STEP#1. I've read that if you don't, it can cause key issues later, a major headache to resolve.2) Detaching the plug attached to the cable to the ISM socket was slightly tricky; you have to rotate the plug lever tab 90 degrees before you can release the plug. (this was out of view in your video)3) I did not have to remove the two torx screws inside the compartment under the armrest.4) I did not have to remove the passenger side console wall panel since the ISM is removed from the driver's side.5) It's tricky removing the covers off the ISM; it helps to have the right tools and exercise a lot of patience, especially trying to wiggle the ISM out of its place. It turns out the gold finger contact plates on the ISM PCB were worn down. I used Q-Tips and solvent to clean the gold fingers as well as the contact prongs. Somewhat dirty. SAAB FOREVER Ciao from Italy
Don't know if you're still active here or if you remember, but I have a question. I opened it up and it's clear as day this is my issue. The contacts were very worn. I scuffed them up gently to restore some yellowish sheen to the plates and then used some electronics cleaner spray to rub them down. There was a lot of dirt that came off and the previous silvery color was gone. Not perfect but a lot better looking. However it seems that the lock is now permanently in "unlocked" mode. I can start the car no problem, but the steering lock never engages. Not when I remove it and then ofc it doesnt unlock when i put it in again. I was wondering if you're any better with electronics than me and might know what's going on. I assume the "unlock circuit" is in a constantly closed for some reason.
Well done! And thanks for filming a pita job that in this case is kind of the only one out there, its so satisfying to diy and reap the rewards. I was hoping to see you film the fix working but no Matter! For the 20 min i watched i didn't reach for my lager! Cheers

Great video. What about that piece of paper you did squeeze in to lock the solenoid? did you leave it there? is it safe? is it really necessary to do that part i.e. squeeze in a piece of paper at minute 7 or so of the video?
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Ok, that's what I though but then if you remove the paper the key won't turn? Changed my ISM but now it seems worse as the key is not turning (as before) but on top, nothing is shown on the SID it doesn't even show key not accepted. contacts service like before. Could be an issue with battery as I disconnected the battery to perform the work when done I did put the cables back (positive and then negative). Key can open door lock, I have radio working but can't turn key to on and no SID shown. Could that be because of the battery or I didn't connect things properly? any thoughts? thanks
Hi Flying Monkey! (BTW, I"d rather by flying too). I removed the switch, cleaned the contacts just as you did in the video.. All seemed to go well. I reinstalled, inserted key, got "Key not recognized" error.. Then got "Steering wheel lock malfunction" error. Originally got this error message intermittently, without the steering wheel bing locked. That's why I tried the procedure.. Now the steering wheel is actually locked.. Key will not rotate in ISM and steering wheel malfunction message will not clear. Neither key will activate door locks.
Hi, this procedure will not resolve the key not accepted msg, if you receive this msg, your ISM has an internal fault and cleaning will not help, however the procedure will not make it worse unless you touched by hand or metal while you are charged with static electricity any part of the board or used improper cleaning agents. Your ISM need to be replaced, when replacing it you might want to disconnect the battery as well. Good luck
Car is randomly decided not to start. Won't even "click/thunk" the steering wheel when key initially inserted. Someone said remove and clean the ignition. Should I unhook car's battery first?
When you're getting steering lock malfunction message, and disconnecting battery for 30 secs fixes it, is it more likely to be the CIM or the ISM failing?
I’m unable to remove the ignition switch after unclipping it from its mount, because of the pipe for the heating/air con (which leads to the back) is in the way! Do I have to remove the pipe first too? Saab 9-3 aero 2005.
I’m considering getting a Saab 93 automatic. Are Saab’s worth the hassle and money? Also, has anyone been able to get a Saab worked on at a regular mechanic, or do I need a specialty mechanic?
The cars are ok, parts are available used and new for affordable prices, for the most parts u wont need a special mechanic, only few issues where programming is required just like any other car u need someone who is a make expert
My symptom is not the same. Quite frequently I turn the key to start and all lights come on but no start. No drain or sound. Turn key back and try again an it starts. Sound like ignition switch to you?
HELP! Where can I purchase new cylinder switch. My system keeps staying slightly engaged killing the battery each time. PLEASE I have a SAAB 97x 2017-works great.
i have a 2006 saab 93 convertible did not want to start, keep getting key not recognize message on SID i tried cleaning it but did not work... will order a used one of ebay or get one myself one of junk yard will update soon. btw i hope its not the CIM key fob still locks doors etc.. i have own these cars for the last 5 years really did not expect this common problem to occur to me lol
I found this while considering repairing/replacing my ISM due to a sticky plunger bit. I assume some crud fell into mine. So now the car doesn't completely shut off after pulling the key from the lock position. This seems like a real knuckle scraper of a job to do. Oy.
My original tech in NY said he would need 3hrs!! to disassemble and diagnose my sticky ignition switch (that he just installed!!) Won't go back there again.
Thanks to your video, I was able t remove the ISM in my driveway and repair the loose clip on the underside of the key fob switch so I can now start my car with no issue. Thanks, again, for your fine work.
Firstly thank you for the video, I have followed it and fitted and replacement ISM in my Aero, it was easy to follow and very informative. The reason I needed to replace the ISM was somtimes on the old one when I removed the key the car would chime and I wouldn't be able to lock it or arm the alarm. I would have to reinsert the key until upon removal I would heard a clunk and the ISM would "pop up" , this would then enable me to remove the key (no chime) and lock the car /arm the alarm. Now I need your help if you would be so kind. I have a question, the new ISM works perfectly except I do not hear the clunk or "pop up" from the ISM, however the car still locks, unlocks and i can arm the alarm (red light flashes) can you please explain why fitting a new ISM has removed the clunk and "pop up" that I experienced on the old one. Many thanks in advance.
I assume the clunk u r used to hear is the steering lock , and that doesn’t always click when working correctly indeed, it depend on factors. Now let me ask u, did u disconnect the battery during the procedure ? And do u have access to a tech2 to read any faults stored in the car ? Finally although it could be a faulty new ISM but chances are slim. U can always disconnect the battery for half an hour and try again, the first time u insert the ignition key after battery disconnection u inly insert the key then remove it and do not turn it. Cheers
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Thank you so much for your reply it so valuable very to have someone with such knowledge who is prepared to help others. The new ISM was not new but in fact a used one from ebay and although the seller assured me it was 100% working it could indeed be faulty however all functionality is present or at least so it seems. The clunk could well have been the steering lock but I always felt it came from the dash around the red light area I always thought it was alarm or immobiliser related as without the clunk on removal of key I couldn't even lock the car with the fob. Regarding the battery I did disconnect the battery negative first HOWEVER I forgot to do this until after I had disconnected the main connection block underneath the ISM , the big block, not the small one directly on the ISM. I do not have a tech 2 but I do intend on buying one from ebay in the near future due to a right and left dipped beam failure messages I get when starting car despite both dipped beams and headlights working fully. I will disconnect the battery and see if that will reset it in anyway. I will follow your instructions about the key. I wonder if the ISM came from a newer saab and therefore functions slightly differently when put on a 2003/4 aero Ss? My concern is the the electronic "pop up" was so important on the previous ISM for functionality, the car thought the key was still in it unless the "pop up" occurred. Strangely enough I miss it, it was quite a nice sound almost like and electronic lock releasing. Can I ask does your make this noise when removing your key. Thank you once again for your help. Mike
Ue Mackay, yes it does that sound but it is randomly, it is not every-time .. so it has conditions to occur, but dont worry about it if it doesnt thats absolutely normal unless there are other symptoms, it is for sure the steering lock and nthn else. The ISMs are all the same between model years, so no worries over there .
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY I’m not to sure what it’s called but you can see it in your video it’s that flat brown/tan wire looking thing I’m not to sure where it goes plugged in one ends plugged in just a little below the shift knob and then the other end looks like it’s above the ignition switch you replaced but when I looked at it in mine I don’t see anywhere it can go plugged in to

Thank you for all of your Saab videos, They have helped me tremendously! I am having a weird issue with my ignition switch and had a question. Can a bad ignition switch cause the ECU to fail?? My ECU recently went bad with codes p0606 P1606 p0605 and a couple others. The car still started and ran but with a very rough idle and very little power. After getting a used ECU cloned to my car, the car ran with the exact same conditions but no check engine light or codes. I took it to my mechanic for diagnosis and he discovered that while it is running, if you switch the key from the run position back to the on position, and quickly back to run position the car would immediately idle better and regain all of its power. He said he checked relays and they were good and he suggested I install a new Ignition switch. I then felt like the ECU replacement was a waste so I put the old ecu back in and I could not remedy the condition by switching the key position, so i know there is a problem with the old ECU. The situation seems a bit odd to me. I could only find a ignition switch rebuild kit online and it is on its way to me but I am not sure if there is anything else I should consider checking.....Any input would be greatly appreciated!
CCskatevid wooow, thats a first time to me ! I don’t believe the ignition would cause such an issue, but hey it could get weird sometimes, so give it a try . Now let me ask u, who did the cloning of ur ECU and was it done on the car or remotely and which device was used to do it ??
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY My mechanic said the same thing. He cant understand why the ignition switch would cause rough idle and low power but it is the only thing we manipulate to make it run properly. I had mailed the ecu to a shop in Illinois called Your parts source. From what I gathered from them they use computers to clone the ecu. I didn't understand how they could clone my damaged Ecu. The other odd thing was that the new ecu had a different part number but it seems to be fine and i was assured it is compatible. I am just scared there is another underlying issue and i really dont want to lose another ecu. If the new ignition switch fixes it I will have to assume it is all good. If not I am not sure what i will try next.
CCskatevid, that make sense, cause it didnt make sense to me when ur mechanic suggested the ISM is related to an engine drivability complaint ! Anyway, may i ask u to register at saabcentral forum and post ur question there under the saab 93 section, so i can help u step by step.
at 7:15 you insert a piece of paper to lock the solenoid open. Do you leave the paper in there? In other words, the fix is just stinking the solenoid open?
I think you could have atleast shown the car not starting when turning the key and then when you finished the job start the car to show that it actually worked. Now we don't know if this is actually the fix for it or not
Without reading the codes from the car it is impossible to point the finger at something, it could be anything, from the steering lock itself, CIM, ISM, software or even a weak battery
I have steering lock warning come on, also says turn steering wheel remove key and try again? Steering wheel is turning so not locked, Any ideas.thanks
@@MrOikono no, it is CIM module back of steering wheel.. still not fixed because no one local wants to work on Saab's. Worst 93 to buy because of the use of fibre optics used to connect all modules.. sell if you own a working Saab.
Hi, I had this problem with the ignition, soon I pop the key , key not recognised contact service, so I buy a used one from eBay , I done the same job like you done , but still nothing , what it can be the problem ?
Its hard to tell without reading fault codes from the car.. Try to disconnect the battery negative cable for few minutes, this might solve ur issue temporarily. There was few models with bad software, but other than these u might have a bad CIM ..
The Flying MechanicDIY so even if i had buy another ISM and replace it,the real problem it can be the CIM ,as I don’t need to programming the key or stuff like that and still got the same problem like at the begging ?
Victor Bebe u cant tell without reading faults and u might even need tech2 solely to be able to diagnose the car. The ISM is cheap enough as used to try though. By the way, the basics, did u try different key
The Flying MechanicDIY yes i try with the new set of ism and key they send me,and like i tell you nothing different from the original ism . And no,I don’t have tech 2 that s why i bought another ism,I thought tthats is the problem , but no,i doesn’t start even after i put the second ism

God NO…! With such a good start, it ended horrible! - Do not use screwdriver to clean contacts! - Use plastic tools to open plastic snaps! - Don’t use lithium grase for plastic or rubber parts! You need a silicone one. - Clean first before applying any grease!
The Flying MechanicDIY . Key wont turn and I get the 'Steering wheel locked. Pull key, turn steering wheel. Try again' message, but my steering wheel is not even locked, even with the key out of the ignition.
I kid you not… I do this and now my car doesn’t recognize my car either!!! No crank. Steering malfunction. Now…. I can’t even get a steering malfunction code because my car won’t recognized my damn key!!!!
Marko Martinez, u can try to disconnect the battery for some time and try. If it doesn’t do it, u will need the Tech2 scan tool to release the key and diagnose the problem as well
The most common reason for that is usually an old, or low charged car battery. Check u r car battery voltage with the headlight ON, if it read less than 11.5, replace the battery, or try to jump start the car, but give it some time to charge. 2nd, try a different key, i hope u have one, its really not a good idea to own a car with a single key. Beyond that, ur CIM could be failing. U might be tempted to disconnect the battery to try solving the issue, if u do so, u will erase the stored fault codes in the car and it maybe become impossible for a technician to point out which component has failed. If u have access to the factory scan tool Tech2, i can guide u further, or actually watch my other video about STEERING LOCK MALFUNCTION
ObeyDj303 make sure ur car battery is charged and it voltage is more than 12v. After that u will need a tech2 , without it its going to be a guess work that will cost u a bunch of money.
ObeyDj303 i will suggest to u join the SAABCENTRAL forum, there is a thread for tech2 locations where members of the forum offer people tech2 services for minor charges or even free .

Great video thanks for sharing on mine i had two extra screws on the side between the seats and the console you could barely see them mine is a 2008 2.8 manual so maybe a slight bit different even WIS does not mention these two screws but anyway i took the whole console out so it made remounting a bit easyer plus i mounted two usb slots in the armrest comp. SAAB FOREVER Ciao from Italy
Having trouble getting the module open. Have picks & Phillips head like you.. damn. Will get it eventually..
I successfully cleaned & replaced ISM. But I hear they tend to go bad for whatever reason after putting back in. Have you heard this??
Thank you very much. It helps me a lot.
These are brilliant videos 👌
Well done! And thanks for filming a pita job that in this case is kind of the only one out there, its so satisfying to diy and reap the rewards.
I was hoping to see you film the fix working but no Matter! For the 20 min i watched i didn't reach for my lager! Cheers
thank you for your video! it was very helpful, and no "steering wheel malfunction".. :)
Success for me.took only 15 min to mount new one. thank you
Soooo helpful! Thank you!
My Saab 2005 93 went in for EGR and 2 locks on the rear doors 2 days ago , it's been throwing steering wheel malfunction up every month or so , was not surprised when I had a call this morning to say it needed replacing, total £410 .
Thanks for the video, got the switch to work again
Thanks for doing the vid very helpful got a kit for mine from Saab Parts hopefully will fix a few issues.
good video, shame the framing at 6:20 leaves you guessing a bit as to what/where you are doing things
Great video. What about that piece of paper you did squeeze in to lock the solenoid? did you leave it there? is it safe? is it really necessary to do that part i.e. squeeze in a piece of paper at minute 7 or so of the video?
No i dont leave it there .. it is just to allow the key to turn so i can inspect it
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Ok, that's what I though but then if you remove the paper the key won't turn?
Better yes.
No
im sorry if this has already been answered, far too many comments to sift through. But, wht was the total man hours for the job?
2 hours at max
So first time it does not crank ?
Can I buy a new ism without needing to pair it with a tech 2
Yes
HELP! Where can I purchase new cylinder switch. My system keeps staying slightly engaged killing the battery each time. PLEASE I have a SAAB 97x 2017-works great.
Abigail Forde im sorry i cant confirm that
i have a 2006 saab 93 convertible did not want to start, keep getting key not recognize message on SID i tried cleaning it but did not work... will order a used one of ebay or get one myself one of junk yard will update soon. btw i hope its not the CIM key fob still locks doors etc.. i have own these cars for the last 5 years really did not expect this common problem to occur to me lol
The key locking the door doesnt mean the key is good to start the car .. but key not recognized is usually CIM or ISM .. goodluck
I found this while considering repairing/replacing my ISM due to a sticky plunger bit. I assume some crud fell into mine. So now the car doesn't completely shut off after pulling the key from the lock position. This seems like a real knuckle scraper of a job to do. Oy.
I hope you found this video helpful, and if you are not a subscriber please consider subscribing for more.
Great video, just done mine but you didnt have to unscrew half them screw you did!
Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!!! Really usefull!!!!!
Do you know the location of the Yaw sensor? Is it under the ISM or gear selector?
Under gear selector
Where does that flat brown wire go mine was unplugged and I can’t find where it goes I tried to look how yours was but I still see nothing
which location/connector are we talking about ?
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY I’m not to sure what it’s called but you can see it in your video it’s that flat brown/tan wire looking thing I’m not to sure where it goes plugged in one ends plugged in just a little below the shift knob and then the other end looks like it’s above the ignition switch you replaced but when I looked at it in mine I don’t see anywhere it can go plugged in to
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY the brown wire at 13:27 from my car it’s plugged in at the bottom but the top end isint and I have no clue where it’s goes I didn’t see anywhere it went into

@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY yeah a automatic I’ll take a look once I’m off work I just got this car and it has the steering wheel lock issue along with electrical issues
What a brilliant video, almost makes me want to do it myself 🤣question, if I replace with a new ISM does it need to be paired or programmed to work with my key?
Ue Mackay , no .. it is plug and play

Thankyou very much 👍
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIYSo i ordered a new ISM £109 from ebay brand new. It arrives tomorrow and i intend to fit it the following day. Mine is a manual transmission aero ss, does the fact that mine is rhd manual change any of these steps? Thanks in advance.
Ue Mackay .. its the same
Ue Mackay just the price is a high, and did u say NEW from eBay !!
How to change out the high and low beam cim?
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY A different ignition switch did not help the issue and I am not sure what my next step is.
CCskatevid, that make sense, cause it didnt make sense to me when ur mechanic suggested the ISM is related to an engine drivability complaint !
Anyway, may i ask u to register at saabcentral forum and post ur question there under the saab 93 section, so i can help u step by step.
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY OK I will register there asap, Thank you
at 7:15 you insert a piece of paper to lock the solenoid open. Do you leave the paper in there? In other words, the fix is just stinking the solenoid open?
jaimeparadise no, its just to keep it open so u can rotate the ignition mechanism for cleaning and lubrication, then u remove it (@8:25)
Hello!
I have a question just did thid and it was a slip on cable that was lose next to main cable, where does that goes?
Thomas olsen hi, can you further explain that, i didnt get it
where you fix that car because i have one
I dont think you would be near me, location AMMAN, JORDAN ..
Do you have to reprogram the switch or can you just install
Andy Granados no programming required
How did you detach the connector to the ism on 5:23
I think you could have atleast shown the car not starting when turning the key and then when you finished the job start the car to show that it actually worked. Now we don't know if this is actually the fix for it or not
Well, u can read the comment section for success stories, however this is not always the fix, it depends on the situation
Hi Mate success here as well - thank you ;)
I can not get the ism connector tap out
If i buy a new ignition switch or salvage one from a broken saab, i have to program it to fit my keys right?
Filip Andersson does not require any programming
Mine gives me steering lock malfunction any remedy
Without reading the codes from the car it is impossible to point the finger at something, it could be anything, from the steering lock itself, CIM, ISM, software or even a weak battery
if I need to replace switch... will I need to program keys with new one?
Carlos Ramirez NO
If you only replace the switch you dont have to pogram the 🔑 if you use the same 🔑
This for Saab 9_3
I have steering lock warning come on, also says turn steering wheel remove key and try again? Steering wheel is turning so not locked,
Any ideas.thanks
Start by cleaning or replacing the ISM
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY I have cleaned still the same. I have ordered one from a breakers apparently it in working order, see what happens..
@@Hasdac hi, very interested, did it fix your problem?? please reply
Victor Bebe no, just try the ISM not the new keys, with the old keys.
if anyone replaced this with a new one.... did u have to have the key reprogrammed or no?
No programming required
I was asking because im about to do an 08 saab
what screwdriver do you use?

God NO…! With such a good start, it ended horrible!
- Do not use screwdriver to clean contacts!
- Use plastic tools to open plastic snaps!
- Don’t use lithium grase for plastic or rubber parts! You need a silicone one.
- Clean first before applying any grease!
I did all that and still did not work. Any ideas?
jaimeparadise what exactly didn’t work ? Whats the problem
The Flying MechanicDIY . Key wont turn and I get the 'Steering wheel locked. Pull key, turn steering wheel. Try again' message, but my steering wheel is not even locked, even with the key out of the ignition.
This is a probably SCL malfunction, you need to read DTCs from the car to diagnose it correctly
Sorry but what is SCL and DTC ?

Cleaned and put back together now nothing...No dash lights no bell dinging...nothing! Car battery is new!

Marko Martinez hey man, im sorry but English plz
Hi friend Can you help me since I have a saab 93 2.0 and the key got stuck and I can not withdraw it what can I do?
Marko Martinez, u can try to disconnect the battery for some time and try.
If it doesn’t do it, u will need the Tech2 scan tool to release the key and diagnose the problem as well
Greetings from Mexico
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Thank you I will follow your recommendations👍👍👍
I get key not accepted on my Saab and it doesn’t let my move the key from the lock position. Any thoughts on that?
Changed both battery on car and the key fob and still same error. And no I don’t have a tech2 in handy.
ObeyDj303 make sure ur car battery is charged and it voltage is more than 12v.
After that u will need a tech2 , without it its going to be a guess work that will cost u a bunch of money.
The Flying MechanicDIY Battery is at 12 volts. Where can I get a tech2 or find someone with one?
ObeyDj303 i will suggest to u join the SAABCENTRAL forum, there is a thread for tech2 locations where members of the forum offer people tech2 services for minor charges or even free .
Who else has tried this!!?
I have and it didnt work
Take the damn ashtray out! lol
All I can see is your hands. I have no idea what you did to get the module out.
Well, u have to try it yourself to find out how hard it is to do the stuff in a limited space and shoot the video at the same time 🤷♂️
