Thank you for this. I used to live near Cologne in the 70s 80s and 90s and know this area very well. I remember the countless shopping and window shopping we did over the years with the family. Nice to see some landmarks haven't changed. Kaufhof is still there, Merzenich near the Dom has been there forever, many other shops have changed names but not appearances. There's the one on the left side of Hohe Straße with that futuristic silver look, used to be called Horten, more or less a department store with a restaurant. Even the pavement is still the same as back then and the street lanterns as well! Thanks again!
As a Brit, I've been working here 20 years. I have never seen the centre of any city deteriorate as much as in Cologne. Höhestr ... Now, cheap Chinese shops, Sweetshops, Currywurstkiosks. Only MediaMarkt is still there. I have people come to visit, say, after a couple of years and they've noticed it immediately. It's disgusting when you think it's the 4th largest city in Germany. Cologne is also rated as the filthiest after Berlin and Duisburg...not the city I arrived in. Even the Carnival was a real carnival back then. Better to visit Düsseldorf. I had a visit from Sweden a while back..."pretty boring here" he said.
