The worst fanfic experience I've had was when I was reading a 70-something chapter fic, all with about 10k words, that was so good it emotionally destroyed me, and I went to sleep with three chapters left and when I woke up the next morning it had been deleted 💀

to be fair (english is not my first language) every native english speaker I've ever met doesn't know the difference between your and you're so maybe you guys just suck at your own language /j /lh
English is my third language, although I am fluent, and feel most comfortable, writing fics in English. I do still need beta readers to polish some of my English though.
The "getting hyperfixated and writing a whole novel in a few days" is totally real 😂 Over the years, I've amassed a ridiculous amount of writing tips and saved them all in a little notebook. One day I decided I would finally transcribe it into a google doc and organize it into neat little sections. So I wrote 18,000 words AND organized all 120 pages of it...within two weeks. 💅 When the ADHD kicks in you just gotta do it 😂

I got one story where the main plot is a slice of life story, but because of the power and nature of the main character there is a background plot of trying to figure out who she is with current theories including: a descendent of Russian Nobility, a fey, a secret plot by the followers of a dark wizard to revitalize the goals of the dark wizard, a top secret weapon that has been given freedom. None of which is mutually exclusive and all of which is wrong. Got another story that is basically just another telling of the Clone Wars… except I am simultaneously making things better and worse. Better because the main character is actually making the Jedi into competent generals. Worse because in canon the CIS was explicitly being held back from their full potential to keep the war going as long as necessary. If you want to find my work, I am Half_Baked_Cat online. And having really good fanfiction is kind of one of the staples of Hetalia, some of those fic were so good they actually changed me, like for real. I guess that's why I never left this fandom lol

My worse experience was a fanfiction that was incredible, like 5,000+ words a chapter - nearing 40 chapters. Nearly finished. Slow burn, enemies to lovers that was so true to the characters. It was wildly popular and read, it had fanart and everything. Then, people who disliked how popular it was bullied the author off the internet. It was deleted. I hope they are okay. We spoke in comments sometimes, and they seemed really nice. I’ve seen people on reddit asking for ways to get it available to them again, because it was just that loved.

I don't remember the tags, but I know it was focused on Nightmare (Nightmare is a character's name btw! ) It was a bit angsty, but not that much, I remember some part of the story, if that can help you find it : Nightmare was becoming (litteraly) sick/hurt of Dream's positivity, and also becoming weaker I think? The others skeleton were catching up on that, and like, they were quite caring I hope that can help you find it! It'd be amazing if so I can try and gives other details if needed

I wrote several fanfiction with over 10 chapters and I still haven’t finished them. Currently my only fanfiction projects I ever finished was taking one of my favourite fics written by a TH-camr named Emperor Kumquat and formatted it all into a ebook format and commissioned someone to bind it into a hard cover book. For context this fic has 111,000+ words and over the course of 16 hours I formatted it into a ebook with little chapter art (a pair of wings at the start of every chapter) and made it like actual book format with a custom cover!
Sometimes when I see a fanfic that hasn't been updated in a while and I see people in the comments asking whether it'll get finished, I like to tell them the author died.
There was a Voltron fanfic where Lance started hallucinating what I can only describe as a cat demon as his friend eventually left the team and met a group of rebels and eventually became their leader and there was an insane amount of some of the best world building I’d ever seen and it was well over 600K words and for the life of me I can’t remember the name of it and when I went to try to find it again on AO3 it had been deleted and I just broke down.
7:03 once wrote a fanfic of a fanfic based on a dj (which is just a manga-style fanfic) but then the original author of the fic i based my fic on deleted it and im still emotionally broken after all this time
Some of the best fanfics I've read were labeled a crack. Especially authors who are not sure what to identify their work as seem to like to use it. At this point it just means "outlandish/weird idea premises" to me and those are often the best kind of premises for an interesting story.
I have underestimated the passion of fan fiction readers so many times. It's so interesting to see a collection of reactions of feelings focusing purely on fan fics.
I write about my own characters, so I don't write fanfiction, and I try to make sure I write at least 1000 words per chapter, so I have no idea how people are just dropping 50k fanfiction like it's nothing.

The small fandom issue is a huge issue for me when looking for fics, especially X reader fics and I've read all of them at this point, God I love being a fan of a pretty small horror film from 2007 that has a small fandom with only a few fan artists who draw my favourite silly little murder man 😭😭😭
As someone whos been has been misfortuned to not only be in incredibly small fandoms when it comes to fanfics only for 3 of the 10 fanfics there is for that game to be weird pedophilia incest smut (fanfics did you so dirty crowscare 😔😔😔) Ive also been doomed to ship super rarepairs that leave me reading the most trauma starting life ending eyes bursting omegaverse fanfics just so i can fulfill my desire to read anything about that ship That one near the start (cant rememebr the exact number) hit hard 😭😭😭

Those Reading the books/Watching the show fanfic are either THE BEST THING EVER or the most cliché-filled cringy almost-bashing thing ever. And yet you can't help but reading them all because they're so rare!!! And addictive! And they give you a new interpretation on some scenes!!! And also, most of them are less than 5 chapters long :'(
I remember finding one fic that I really liked had been deleted, and I was so sad cause it was a fic that I've been waiting every few months for each update until it eventually became completed. I wanted to reread it one day and discovered it was gone. I eventually came to process it (I download every fic I depend on now) and went about my life. But suddenly, I got the idea of using the wayback machine after using it for my thesis citations. I had a burst of joy seeing it there. Now I can happily reread it whenever I want.
The worst part for me is that I’ve read so many fanfics, probably not that much compared to some, but I still cannot write even a simple oneshot for the life of me. Like my thoughts about making this really cool fanfic (at least to me) will be keeping me up at night and then when I finally get on AO3 to write something about it my mind goes totally blank and what I try to write absolutely sucks and sounds like it was written by a 3rd grader.

One of the most memorable fanfics I’ve ever read was about the au reverse gravity falls. For those who don’t know, that’s an au where gideon and pacfica are in the position of the pines twins and the pines twins have gideons powers. Of course they always made Mabel really over sexualized and dipper hot. Anyway, it took place in highschool and it was an x reader. It had over 50 chapters. I read it in one night. It was enemies to lovers with Dipper and at the end the reader and Dipper were married with kids. I don’t remember too much about it besides that but for some reason I remember there was drama after they were married.
Fanfiction holds a place in my soul next to the emotional baggage and self denial. I found a fanfiction several in fact that were written around 2015 and the authors committed self die. My only regret in life is that necromancy doesn't exists cause I would like to know how they end.

i mean, it could be worse. your favorite fanfic of all time could be written by someone genuinely great but you fell in love with them but you had a complicated and messy breakup where you're still in love with them but you've decided it's just better you two just never see each other again so you can't read the fic again on top of losing a valued relationship and also community with the fandom (which is really small btw) to the point where it tainted the experience of the original work. But then again this could be a comically specific experience, who knows lmao
oh god, that last one, when i was like 13 I got watersports and waterboarding mixed up cause I didn't fully get what watersports was so i just assumed from tags it was that.. so one time when watching a film with some people there was a scene with waterboarding and I just nodded wisely and said "Watersports."

OMG, I remember the first time when fic was tagged water sports. I was so sure that that will be surfing or something. Now I check every word that I don't recognize. Most of them are in the e category so I am not risking it.
The thing with fics in my mind is that at least every 50x words (1 or more fics doesn’t matter) i just get a crazy case of Déjà vu… like i have read this exact piece of text before, and i can distinctly remember thinking about it before it has happend while i have not even been close to a famfiction like the one i would be reading at the time. Btw. I also happens with real life, where i feel like i have had a dream about a scenario with is happening and i get a big feeling of Déjà vu
My worst experience was while reading an ongoing fanfic, the author suddenly went on a forever hiatus, and (almost) every fic I've read since then have also been placed on hiatus. My luck had never been so worse as then 😔 Another constant pain I experience is when I read a genuinely amazing and captivating fic, finish at a cutoff, then check only to see it's been years since the last update. Always makes me lose all hope man, and I _know_ alot of you also have experienced this. (Why is it always the best fic that are uncomplete and leave me with a missing piece of myself every time??)
Theres nothing like getting 2 chapters into writing a pg-13 multi-chapter fic and then putting it on accidental hiatus because you decided to make the chapters three times longer and the call of the explicit dead dove: do not eat void clawing you back into its depths so you can write a one-shot that is literally just porn instead of the next chapter is a feeling i will never give up (help me)

Professional editor approved can be boring; Somehow fanfic writers seem to pack a specific type of personality into their works that published books just can't grasp... Or if you find one let me know, I want to check it out.
You wanna know the worst well written fanfic I've ever read? It was a Rise of the TMNT fanfic that had I thought was gonna be a fun read. No tag warned me of anything bad. Turns out the author forgot to tag pedophilia. I got smacked so hard in the face, but I had to finish it cause I needed to see if Leo ever got his happy ending. That fic scarred me. Thankfully, they threw the pedophile into the prison dimension where he belongs. I will never look at lizards and especially chameleons the same, that fic ruined them for me.

5:54 This taught me betrayal and gave me crippling depression when I opened that long awaited update and it was an Author Note explaining that the fic was officially abandoned and up for adoption. My hopes were raised so high and Crushed so fiercely.

My worse experience was a fanfiction that was incredible, like 5,000+ words a chapter - nearing 40 chapters. Nearly finished. Slow burn, enemies to lovers that was so true to the characters. It was wildly popular and read, it had fanart and everything. Then, people who disliked how popular it was bullied the author off the internet. It was deleted.
I hope they are okay. We spoke in comments sometimes, and they seemed really nice. I’ve seen people on reddit asking for ways to get it available to them again, because it was just that loved.

I wrote several fanfiction with over 10 chapters and I still haven’t finished them. Currently my only fanfiction projects I ever finished was taking one of my favourite fics written by a TH-camr named Emperor Kumquat and formatted it all into a ebook format and commissioned someone to bind it into a hard cover book.
For context this fic has 111,000+ words and over the course of 16 hours I formatted it into a ebook with little chapter art (a pair of wings at the start of every chapter) and made it like actual book format with a custom cover!
I remember explaining what omega verse was to a male classmate of mine along with a friend. He was scarred. It was so fucking funny😂😂
Sometimes when I see a fanfic that hasn't been updated in a while and I see people in the comments asking whether it'll get finished, I like to tell them the author died.
There was a Voltron fanfic where Lance started hallucinating what I can only describe as a cat demon as his friend eventually left the team and met a group of rebels and eventually became their leader and there was an insane amount of some of the best world building I’d ever seen and it was well over 600K words and for the life of me I can’t remember the name of it and when I went to try to find it again on AO3 it had been deleted and I just broke down.

Some of the best fanfics I've read were labeled a crack. Especially authors who are not sure what to identify their work as seem to like to use it. At this point it just means "outlandish/weird idea premises" to me and those are often the best kind of premises for an interesting story.
I have underestimated the passion of fan fiction readers so many times. It's so interesting to see a collection of reactions of feelings focusing purely on fan fics.
I write about my own characters, so I don't write fanfiction, and I try to make sure I write at least 1000 words per chapter, so I have no idea how people are just dropping 50k fanfiction like it's nothing.

The small fandom issue is a huge issue for me when looking for fics, especially X reader fics and I've read all of them at this point, God I love being a fan of a pretty small horror film from 2007 that has a small fandom with only a few fan artists who draw my favourite silly little murder man 😭😭😭

I remember finding one fic that I really liked had been deleted, and I was so sad cause it was a fic that I've been waiting every few months for each update until it eventually became completed. I wanted to reread it one day and discovered it was gone. I eventually came to process it (I download every fic I depend on now) and went about my life. But suddenly, I got the idea of using the wayback machine after using it for my thesis citations. I had a burst of joy seeing it there. Now I can happily reread it whenever I want.
The worst part for me is that I’ve read so many fanfics, probably not that much compared to some, but I still cannot write even a simple oneshot for the life of me. Like my thoughts about making this really cool fanfic (at least to me) will be keeping me up at night and then when I finally get on AO3 to write something about it my mind goes totally blank and what I try to write absolutely sucks and sounds like it was written by a 3rd grader.

One of the most memorable fanfics I’ve ever read was about the au reverse gravity falls. For those who don’t know, that’s an au where gideon and pacfica are in the position of the pines twins and the pines twins have gideons powers. Of course they always made Mabel really over sexualized and dipper hot.
Anyway, it took place in highschool and it was an x reader. It had over 50 chapters. I read it in one night. It was enemies to lovers with Dipper and at the end the reader and Dipper were married with kids. I don’t remember too much about it besides that but for some reason I remember there was drama after they were married.
Fanfiction holds a place in my soul next to the emotional baggage and self denial. I found a fanfiction several in fact that were written around 2015 and the authors committed self die. My only regret in life is that necromancy doesn't exists cause I would like to know how they end.

The thing with fics in my mind is that at least every 50x words (1 or more fics doesn’t matter) i just get a crazy case of Déjà vu… like i have read this exact piece of text before, and i can distinctly remember thinking about it before it has happend while i have not even been close to a famfiction like the one i would be reading at the time.

My worst experience was while reading an ongoing fanfic, the author suddenly went on a forever hiatus, and (almost) every fic I've read since then have also been placed on hiatus. My luck had never been so worse as then 😔
Another constant pain I experience is when I read a genuinely amazing and captivating fic, finish at a cutoff, then check only to see it's been years since the last update. Always makes me lose all hope man, and I _know_ alot of you also have experienced this. (Why is it always the best fic that are uncomplete and leave me with a missing piece of myself every time??)
Theres nothing like getting 2 chapters into writing a pg-13 multi-chapter fic and then putting it on accidental hiatus because you decided to make the chapters three times longer and the call of the explicit dead dove: do not eat void clawing you back into its depths so you can write a one-shot that is literally just porn instead of the next chapter is a feeling i will never give up (help me)

You wanna know the worst well written fanfic I've ever read? It was a Rise of the TMNT fanfic that had I thought was gonna be a fun read. No tag warned me of anything bad. Turns out the author forgot to tag pedophilia. I got smacked so hard in the face, but I had to finish it cause I needed to see if Leo ever got his happy ending. That fic scarred me. Thankfully, they threw the pedophile into the prison dimension where he belongs. I will never look at lizards and especially chameleons the same, that fic ruined them for me.
