Running a car HARD was called an “Italian Tune Up” back in my younger days. I worked at a Porsche/Audi dealer in 1987 and got to drive a lot of 944’s. My favorite was the 944TurboS. What an amazing beast it was. Better balanced than a 911 and very fast, almost as fast as a 930. Just my opinion though. I would love to find one to play with but they are hard to find in the US and rather expensive today.
Thanks for commenting, yes, they are very fast, even compared to 911‘s. People seam to increasingly understand the performance of these cars, prices are climbing quickly these days.
I love Germany, I love everything about it. You and this car are so quintessential German watching your video's feels like riding the autobahn in my 911 while wearing lederhosen, eating curryworst and drinking Warsteiner (even I know a German would never eat or drink in his car). It's like the TH-cam version of "Rinderkennzeichnungsfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz"
Thanks for commenting, mate. I don’t love Germany that much, but I guess the neighbours‘ grass is always greener. The funny thing about most German language jokes is that we just put compounds together without the spaces. Apart from that they’re mostly identical with English.
Johannes, when I was doing this job at a Porsche dealership many years ago, we had a crossbar that went over the engine, and sat on the fender seams and had a screw lift, to raise the engine about 40mm and this combined with loosening the crossmember made it a little easier. Might be cheaper to build one of these than use a hydraulic table.
When I bought mine 944 turbo 10+ years ago, one of the first to do items was to replace the engine mounts. All forums said, that original ones are the way to go, as they are filled with hydraulic fluid and are more durable. There were mixed reviews for aftermarkets ones (also Meyle). Some were claiming, that they would last on turbo engine only 4-5 years, do to heat from headers and cross-over pipe, so I went with original ones. If I recall correctly, the set cost around 700 euros in 2014.
Great to be seeing more regular content! As an owner of a Mitsubishi, I also enjoyed your comment that the engine’s smoothness was “thanks to its balance shafts,” which is really you expressing your appreciation to Mitsubishi for licensing that technology to Porsche. 😊.
Thanks, Alastair. I wasn’t aware it’s a Mitsubishi patent, but I’m not surprised. When it comes to precision mechanics, I always look for Japanese brands. Qed Anest Iwata …
Viel Freude beim Schrauben weiterhin!
My dad said the same about letting the engine burn off from driving a long distance. He said the carbon deposits would be removed from it and there was a tendency for a city driven car to run more smoothly after a long drive.
And I think your dad’s right about this. It’s just that people, especially car sellers, try to cure all sorts of diseases with this. Clocked up filters, ripped tubes, … 😆
@@GreasyFingers We live in Norway and we once drove to Baden-Baden for a visit, while there my dad had his Peugeot 205 serviced (this was in 1990) and driving home was a lot smoother than driving down. Those German mechanics did a great job 😀
Had a very similar experience when changing the mounts on my '88 S, and I too went with the Meyle mounts. The OE Porsche mounts supposedly last longer, but I couldn't justify the close to $1000USD price for such a simple part. There is apparently a method of ratchet strapping & lifting one side of the engine at a time to gain enough clearance to avoid dropping the crossmember - I had a hard time finding where to latch onto, especially on that right hand side, so dropped mine one side at a time as well.
Hey Johannes! Thanks for another great vid. I think the quality of your vids steadily improve and was especially noticeable in the intro. I was curious if you dismissed using a engine support bar as it would have allowed you to support the engine and raise the car fully. Also lifting the engine with the engine lift without supporting the rear of the car can make the front end light enough the whole car can tip and fall off the car hoist. I'm pretty sure you're aware of all this but just thought i'd mention it as a courtesy. Years ago when i was in the industry, Chevrolet created the ASTRO van which was so short and front heavy, you could cause it to tip forward and fall of the hoist if not careful. Since then, i've been somewhat overly cautious about weight transfer on car hoists. Cheers and thanks again!
Such a good video. I appreciate seeing the good old-fashioned problem-solving, and glad is not just glossed over. That's what gives me my dopamine fix when working on my car. For some reason, this reminded me, not of the subframes I had to drop to change engine mounts, but the removal of the upper sump on my 997.2. The WS manual only gives minimal indications but somehow misses the fact that removal of the exhaust headers is required. The ones held with 18 fixings, 8 of which broke and 4 had to have the head ground off. My quick weekend job turned into weeks of slow, careful, stressful, but ultimately satisfying drilling... and tackling loads of other things I didn't plan for. It's all good though, I am happy, the car is happy.
A lovely car and a great watch as always. Engine mounts always seem to be a pig of a job. I think the theory mentioned at the beginning works, but only up to a point. If an engine hasn't been extended at all and is coked up then a good blast (especially with fuel additive) can do it a lot of good. Obviously though if there are physical problems like leaking hoses and incorrect parts it can't help that at all.
Good idea to replace those mounts. They only last 10 to 20 years and all 944's are way over 30 years old now. Pain in the butt job but it will be fun when it's done!
A really nice job. Obviously, the aftermarket Meyle mounts are not an exact fit, but worth playing around with for the money saving. Overall, the car is in amazing condition. Here in the UK they are normally rusted to death.
Let's face it, we are both getting older, not old, just older. I find that I now use a Hazet 916HPLG ratchet wrench for a little extra "tug" when breaking apart things like subframe bolts. If you don't have one, look at getting it or something similar. It is nice to use since it is telescopic in nature and more adaptable to unique space constraints.

Just coming out of my oil pit, torquing the cross member of oldtimer with my Carolus torque wrench ❤and finding a fellow greasy fingers on youtube. I feel much at home at this channel 😅
I love the fact that you don't edit out all of the grunts and groans and maybe a few Deutsch explatives under your breath. Makes the rest of us mere mortals feel a little more normal! P.S. I think Ferrari mechanics call a high speed run after extended city driving an "Italian tune up".
Filming myself is not without surprises, I can tell you. I would have sworn I’m perfectly silent and never have my mouth open. 😆 I’m learning about this expression here in the comments. Very funny!
By the way: woher kommen diese speziellen Kenntnisse der englischen Sprache bitte? Mal in den Staaten gelebt? Gruß Michael

You can get those from an automotive tool store, they're used on BMW's a lot. I was thinking of making that same comment! :)

Angled bolts. What a great idea. Do you have information on the length of time these repairs and upgrades took total?
Thanks, Alex.
I think it took me two full days, but I’m sure with the experiences made, I could now cut it down to one or less.

Rightfully so! I’m convinced it’s one of the best cars of its time.
I think you will find that the Meyle mounts will be a poor investment. Even though they are ridiculously expensive, the OEM mounts are far superior.

@2:50 does it sound a bit like a Mercedes diesel ? This is not a familiar sound from my 944 days long ago.
Yes, that’s because the hydraulic tappets had to fill with oil first.
