@ 10:10 Those tubes arent oil pickups, they return oil to the sump. You should switch to the 996 swirl pots. Those help force air bubbles from the oil.

Dual Mass flywheel is primarily to cancel out engine harmonics. Secondary purpose is smooth clutch take up. If it lasts in a medium duty van like my vito hauling load for 300000 km they are quite robust. Important question is when removing the stock flywheel do you need to use something like a fluid damper to deal with harmonics.

It's not uncommon on Porsche M96/97 engines to add a harmonic damper at the nose if one replaces the flywheel with a single-mass. There are quite a few aftermarket harmonic dampers available from brands like RSS, and many of them are also underdrives, that help reduce parasitic drag and extend steering pump life by reducing its RPM.

I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but heat the alloy head not the bolt, the mig trick is the start but then heat around and expand it all. If you rap towel round a magnet to bung the whole, oh shit hindsight again. Good work keep it up 😂

I can't do a deep sump on my M97 3.8 Cayman, motor practically sits on the ground. I have it on my M96 996 though.

Is there a reason you would not use permanent studs with nuts, as opposed to steel bolts into the aluminum heads?

    Just sayin…
Soul Exhaust = rebranded Chinese exhaust.
Forgot to install a “racing” AOS.
Didn’t check cylinders for bore score.
And for the record. This is far from Porsche’s worst engine.

Was about to say as well...Where are the nikasil cylinder walls? IMS Reseal? Pin weld the sprocket on the IMS shaft? ARP Connecting rod bolts? Oil pressure relief valve? Chromoly oil pump hex key? The deepsump they sell on their website is LN Engineering branded and they didn't even upgrade to the spin-on oil filter adapter. So called "teardown" and only addresses 1 fault IMO that you can't even produce on track without running full slicks...
Edit: Oh yeah they didn't bother replacing the fuel injectors either which can be a leading cause of bore scoring! This is not the worst engine Porsche ever made but there is a very good reason the values are still where they are years later...if you pay over $30k for an M97 non mezger Porsche, you got scammed very hard..

None of that really matters when you have a channel that's prime for a Metzger swap. Drive the M97 until it blows; then drop a significantly better engine in its place.

Had the sump apart and didn’t bore scope the cylinders for scoring?

No need really, guaranteed to have some scoring at that mileage - fix it when it gets noisy.

Should add a harmonic balancer if removing the dmf

    • @stotle263
      @stotle263 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

Harmonic damper won't reduce your chances of a bluetooth crankshaft with a SMF... People did that in the 997.1 GT3 (installed LWFW from 3RS) and Porsche had to issue a nationwide bulletin cause there were a few engine failures related to it. You need to balance the entire rotating assembly in order to make a LWFW feasible. Even then you are still at risk.

Why didn't you change the Intermediate shaft bearing while the engine was out ? Yes I know that you have to take the entire engine apart.

Wait, I thought the M96 engine is Porsche's WORST... No wait, the Lokasil cylinder bore/timing chain V8 in the Cayennes is Porsche's WORST engine... No wait, the blowup prone engine in the 991.1 GT3 is Porsche's worst engine. Lol. And people will tell you Porsche is the pinnacle of engineering.

M96 is way more repairable in regards to the IMS and most of the M97 that’s better just bolts on.
Also, it’s a good idea to replace the oil filter cap every other oil change to keep the bypass strong and happy and Porsche includes a filter with it for like 30 bucks or something.
