    • @allendrake6960

      I'd argue that part of the enormous adoration of the film when it came out was due to it being so overdramatically "America, FUCK YEAH!", which we all especially adored in the 90s. It wasn't considered as cheesy back then.

    Looking back on the first movie, I know that the characters are stereotypes and it's really cheesy. However, at least they are memorable on who they are and what they do. In the sequel, the new characters I found boring. Yeah, the action can be intense. But we need to follow characters that seem memorable characters whom we want to see to defeat the aliens. There were also moments in which could lead to emotional moments but they didn't. I've seen action movies that have emotional moments like Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Trek II: the Wrath of Kahn, Star Trek Beyond, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Hell, even Deadpool, a rated-R comic book movie in which the main character who speaks in a foul language and has a foul humor can give a more emotional performance because of what happened to him. In the first Independence Day, even though they didn't do them very well, at very least they tried to.

    The bits to cut out of the film: the slow bits where we follow the children and the wives after all the destruction.
    I didn't take Goldblum's dunked episode as preachy on the part of the film but more as him losing hope and being wrong.

  • @Makeshift_Mulder
    @Makeshift_Mulder 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The movie is a product of its time and has to be enjoyed as such and remembered only fondly in nostalgia for its own sake. You had Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum at the top of their powers so you paid to see them alone. Their charisma and the effects are all we cared about and it was an absolute blast at 15. I saw it 4 times. Movies have to be appreciated in the context on when they were released.

    I didn't like this movie either, I was incredibly surprised when they both said they didn't like the patriot though. I just can't fathom how a natural born American citizen, who is not a terrorist or terrorist sympathizer, can find anything wrong with the patriot. It was an excellent film. the patriot was well written, well acted, historically accurate where it needed to be, and an equal blend of drama and action.

    Independence Day is a good movie, why? It is has fun characters, nice effects and alien invasion. Who cares that plotpoints are pulled out of the nose. Ever since i entered the internet, movies i love are supposed to be sooo bad: Water World, Godzilla (1998), Independence Day. I feel like mostly critics hold that opinion.

    The only part I remembered and thought was awesome was when the president asked the alien, "What exactly do you want us to do?" and the alien responds, "...diiieeee noooowwwww."

    I think they had some dumb reasons for disliking or hating this movie. Especially their comments about it being boring after the destruction scenes in the first half. Not sure how anyone can just be careless afterwards and not care because they got their eye candy too early. is that all they care about then? At least for Rob?

    • @pursuing222
      @pursuing222 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      now I'm getting further into the review and not understanding them even more... Why would you want a short 60 second scene with the nuke? obviously it builds tension and after that fact, it's like, now what? how the flip are we going to defeat these guys? why would anyone wanna rush thru those scenes?

    Hey Rob! You're not the only one who likes Mars Attacks. I like that film too. As with Independence Day, I still enjoy that movie, even after reviewing it for my channel. But with watching it every 4th of July, there is an on and off quality to it, in that it would get boring at times. But I still like it.

    Honestly I only recently watched Stargate and I personally felt the movie was going to be so much better...and then they reached the other side of the Stargate and my opinions soon changed. Seriously, it's a gate that takes them to another planet in another galaxy and what does the planets landscape look like? Egypt with a couple of extra moons that look remarkably like our moon (same colour and everything). I mean sure Star Wars did something similar by having a lot of scenes set in real places on Earth but they at least had the decency to make sure there was something alien about the landscapes

    I brought my little sister to see this film as I wasn't all too bothered about it (although I did recall liking the first one as a child..)
    The film was a pretty ok film. Not good, not bad, really just something you'd put on if you had to kill some time and didn't have anything else to watch.
    I don't think there's anything particularly negative about it...standard popcorn movie, as they call it..
