    The film did NOT play up him being gay and his gay relationship itself as comic relief. It didn't at any point go, "Haha, he's gay!" as a punchline to anything. The relationship he and his partner had in the film possessed humor at times because they were bantering as couples will do.
    I don't know how he got the impression they were mocking the fact he's in a gay relationship from the film. Also I actually liked that the film just matter of factly approached him being in a gay relationship.

      He never died. In fact it's really not confirmed that he died in the first movie. I heard they even had a scene where they go "he's dead" then they cut it out so they could leave it open. The fact is the audience simply assumed he died.

  • @Jirekianu
    @Jirekianu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm going to do some quick math. So, there's anywhere from 3 to 6 miles of oceanic crust to drill through. This means on average the ship would have to tunnel through 4.5 miles of crust. Which is 23,760 feet. Doing some rough calculations this means that the drill was vaporizing 6.6 feet per second of the soil, and rock, in the way. So, whatever time was left plus 6.6 feet. Even if there was a breach of the crust there. The mantle wouldn't all squeeze out/cause an atmospheric destroying event. It would likely result in a large new island if anything. Especially with the ocean water cooling the magma as it erupted out.
    Additionally, an object that massive would have to have some way to negate its mass to accelerate and decelerate as fast as it does. Not to mention that it does travel faster than light. So the idea that it could suspend some of it's mass isn't surprising. Especially if it's trying to actually have fighter craft and other things actually be capable of leaving it's grav well more effectively.

  • @shmikex
    @shmikex 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Impressions I got from this movie:
    1. Why are these guys just called "aliens"? You'd think after 20 years (and apparently having prisoners and specimens to study) they'd give them a proper species name.
    2. I didn't even realize that other doctor was Okun's partner until right around the time he died. I thought they were just buddies (similar to Liam's character and his buddy).
    3. I'm glad they didn't go out of their way to repeat scenes from the first film. I was waiting for one of them to go "Welcome to Earth." In fact I liked how Liam's character tried to punch an alien and failed miserably. Though Boomer 2 did live.
    4. All in all, this would have made a much better video game. Heck it was written like a video game (covert missions, battles, and even the end was a big boss battle). This could have easily been done as one of those video games where the sprites are directly based on the actors and the voices, much like Ghostbusters 3 (the game for those who do not know). Then I could see them expanding this to sequel games.

      I saw the double feature, too. The first film (and trailers leading up to it) was zoomed in too far till I got a manager to fix it, and the second film was shown in 3D but the glasses didn't work; had to request those since none were handed out.

    Yep, I freaking called it. The effects in Independence Day were practical, relatively simple, and you got what was going on. They hold up, and you can at least understand most of the characters. I predicted the effects in this movie would absolutely suck.
    Plus...well, a giant spectacle effects movie is a dime a dozen now. You want to see a giant effects movie? There are tons of them.

    Brad, I had no idea where to ask you this but have you heard of a movie called Soul Survivors from 2001? I remember you saying in the Winter's Tale Midnight Screenings review how you really want to find a movie that others didn't review and is uniquely bad. Well, you should definitely review Soul Survivors then. Trust me, it's worth it and it wasn't reviewed by any notable reviwer from what I've seen.
    The movie got awful reviews, is considered to be very confusing, nonsensical etc., just badly made in general. It's an unique experience to say the least.
    It's worthy of a Snob episode. You did review some newer movies before. But if it's not the type of a movie you would normally review or too "modern" then is there any chance you could make a special Midnight Screenings review about it? I know that sounds like a weird request, but the movie is so bad that it's worth it. It would make for a very entertaining Midnight Screenigns vid and a Snob episode.

    Interesting what you say about Bill Pullman. I had forgotten he died until now, and I just saw it two days ago. And it didn't fully occur to me that the President died until you said it. In the movie they say they've lost contact with her and it seems more like they assume she died, which led me to believe she'd turn up alive at the end. But by the end I'd completely forgotten about her.

    I made the ill-advised decision to watch Transformers Age of Extinction earlier last week, before watching Independence Day: Resurgence on Friday evening. Watching Transformers, I felt really frustrated with so many aspects of the film, it was entirely unenjoyable. Independence Day 2 had many of the negative elements as Transformers (bad acting, rubbish dialogue, 'hot girl' syndrome, awkwardly incorporated Chinese inserts - whether characters, locations or product placements), but ID2 wasn't as painful an experience. I agree with pretty much all of the points raised in the video - and also laughed out loud when Vivica A Fox's character died... as a side note, wasn't she an exotic dancer in the first film? Did she decide to train to be a doctor after the film ends? It feels like that could have been an interesting part of a story for ID2, and maybe would elaborate a little more on how humanity coped and reflected on issues following the original film's destruction - beyond it just saying 'Oooh, we have new tech and can build fancier weapons, vehicles and expand space travel'.

    No fucking duh. EVERYTHING has it's own gravity. Everything exerts gravity on everything else, it's just that the larger the object the more significant it is. Heck in the first movie, that large ship should have had effects similar to this one by pulling the tides and altering the rotation speed of the earth.

      jdzencelowcz Fox won't get all that money. A lot of it goes to the theater chains, and foreign ticket sales have even lower returns. And that budget doesn't include the marketing, which was pretty extensive. So I think Fox probably barely broke even on this film - and given that the reception to this film was terrible, meaning even less people will come to see a sequel, chances are Fox won't think a sequel is worth the financial investment, unless they can somehow make it much cheaper.

    wow.... at 8:10ish "has it's own gravity that some how shuts off".... Easy answer. Once it landed, it became part of the mass of the planet and no longer needs to pump energy into its internal gravity control systems, it can just use the earth's natural gravity.
    The gravity drive was also how it was able to land SLOWLY without a high-speed impact, and that drive is also how it managed to hit London with Hong Kong. Their drive was engaged, and it pulled hong kong up, and then landing, dropped it all on London.

    What really gets me about the idea of the mothership having its own gravity is that not only could they have explained why this doesn't seem to apply once its landed over the Atlantic Ocean, but it could have also explained why it has its own gravity AT ALL. Gravity, from what I'm aware is generated by MASS, NOT SIZE. For example, a black hole could be relatively tiny with regards to the space it occupies, but its mass (the amount of matter it contains) is super-dense and it has a lot of it. A movie made in the information age should not feature this shoddy a level of basic scientific understanding. That said, this could have worked in the movie's favor to preserve continuity by somehow explaining that the alien's technology was able to produce artificial gravity on a large scale as a sort of weapon. Then they could say this weapon had been turned off once the ship finally landed. As things stand, until someone involved in the film confirms this idea, it's just head-cannon.

      @wolfwing1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well something that massive would effect the mass of the earth, especially things on the surface that are are less dense like water and such, the moon has the same effect on water from further away. it being metal would give it far more mass then many other things below it.

      It's a suitably dumb followup to one of the best dumb movies of all time, while also being reasonably intelligent with how they modernized the previous equipment and what have you. Giant Alien chasing a school bus for no reason = fantastic. Most people are too cynical to appreciate stupid entertainment now unless it's fronted by Stallone/Schwarzenegger.

    One of the things I really loved and enjoyed about the first Independence Day film was the Jewish people got to be actual Jewish people with faith and not just an "I'm Jewish because I say so!" And we also got all sorts of people of various religions (or not religions) and skin color coming together.
    This one just seems like so many other films ugh.

    I really enjoy the original Independence Day. it was a lot of fun. I mean sure it's incredibly stupid, full of plot contrivances and subplots galore, etc. etc. etc....but it's incredibly entertaining and it's cast had off the charts charisma...Independence Day 2 by comparison is just fucking bad, and it's not even bad in an entertaining way. The central conflict of the movie seems really small scale and despite the literal death clock in the movie there never seems to be any genuine danger. Jeff Goldblum is the only person in the movie that seems to be having any fun at all and his character is given literally nothing to fucking do.
    in point of fact...pretty much none of the fucking characters in the entire movie have anything of genuine consequence or importance to do. Especially since the problem is ultimately solved by just shooting the monster from Godzilla 2014 a lot.

    Meh, I enjoyed it; then again, TMNT Out of the Shadows pretty much set the bar for this summer's blockbusters for me, so I imagine that will make pretty much everything more passable. But what really made it work was how it managed to hit just the right levels of stupid. I was jokingly hoping they would bring the machete wielding African warlord into space with them, AND THEY DID! And then by the time they dropped the Burj Khalifa on downtown London I was in for the ride.
    And I'm saying this as a hetero male, but I actually really liked the relationship between Brent Spiner and his boyfriend. I found it to be the most believable and sympathetic relationship in the film, and the boyfriend's death was probably the most emotional part, too.
    Also, after the queen emerged from the wreckage of her ship, was I the only one imagining how awesome it would have been if Gypsy Danger showed up for some reason and beat the shit out of her?
