At 3:14 in this video of the song: th-cam.com/video/Ci8-Z4hC_o8/w-d-xo.html you can see a tear fall from Vessel's mask, (or sweat), but I'm thinking tear haha, he def gets into the music. Amazing he can keep his vocals together in spite of the crying.

Vessel addressed his crying on stage (he does cry almost every show), in an AI voice-generated dialogue that was played as an interlude last year for the US tour, their shows are very intense but nothing short of excellence.
Mask: They think you fake it.
    Vessel: What do you mean?
Mask: When you cry on stage, they don't think it's real.
    Vessel : That's a reasonable assumption
Mask : Do you fake it?
Vessel : No, I don't. But it is something I do consistently, so if I was a member of the audience I would probably assume that it wasn't real.
Mask : Do you ever see them crying?
Vessel : No, I can only ever see them smiling. That's good, I want them to smile.
Mask : Do you think they want you to cry?
Do you think they like it?
Vessel : Not as such, I think they just want to know that I am feeling something, feeling what they are feeling, perhaps.
Mask : Do you think that this amount of crying is healthy for you?
Vessel: I don't know. But at least I feel something, if I don't feel anything then why would I even do this?

Even in the studio recordings, all those deep sighs, breaths, and gasps are definitely the underlying emotional elements that Vessel brings to his singing. Unlike a lot of singers, he really connects to what he's singing and allows his vulnerabilities to show through, something I think makes the lyrics and singing itself even more resonate. @@sonja7halcyon I think sleep token is a very polarizing band regarding the type of people that listen to it. Either you like it or you don't. I don't think it sounds like pop death metal by any means, and they kind of just do what they want. I don't even consider them much a metal band, more so a band that does metal sometimes, or includes random bits and pieces when they feel like it. Rain in my opinion is one of their more emotional songs on their newest album that really resonates with me. If you haven't checked it out I'd really recommend it. @@Tnepi I just listened to Rain there, I watched the lyric video. I can appreciate it for what it is but it's not for me at all. Art is subjective anyway, if it moves you in some way then it's done it's job but it's not going to resonate with everyone. Rain doesn't move me, it bores me. The vocalists vocals are too heavily processed for me, his voice doesn't resonate with me, the lyrics don't inspire anything within me and feel (to me) contrived, pretentious and lacking real depth and meaning, the basic drum track that bookends the metal drums in the middle sounds so generic and unoriginal as if the producer/engineer pulled it out from a "manufactured pop" plugin, it's just too emo for me, too self-indulgent. The whole thing is putting me to sleep... no pun intended. But that's my subjective experience. Each to their own.
I feel like, if you're going to sing about pain, fucking SING about pain. If you're going to engage esoteric and occult topics, fucking engage it.

I highly suggest reading the lyrics as a poem and/or a rant to whoever is the subject of the song. Reading them that way makes it some of the best songs to sing along to or just to experience the emotion of the poem makes them the best of both at the same time and they’re not even in that format, it’s also arranged to have a beautiful melody or captivating subconscious emotions AT THE SAME TIME. The darker music tone bolsters the weight of the words spoken to push that emotion even further beyond only an inner monologue but unleashing the emotions instead in a way the medium they’re copying could never achieve in it’s own form. Combining something into a perfect and unique hybrid for EVERY SINGLE SONG isn’t something fueled by any evil intentions, it’s a god given gift for everyone involved in the making of the song. So moving. I’ve always worked hard on songs to get past the raw, authentic emotions in order to perform without getting overwhelmed. I still feel it but have built up a … was going to say filter but it’s more like a limiter to be sure I’d go only so far but never beyond that, never, umm messy. Been seriously rethinking that for a while. Not easy to let go though. Thanks Chris for always encouraging us to go beyond comfortable to authenticity to connect with both the art and the audience and for providing these examples so we can experience it for ourselves.

In a way, I understand why Vessel would cry during a performance like this. As an author, I know how important it is to be emotionally attached to your work. Whenever I write something, I am connected to every character, every location in the story, etc. I cry whenever I kill off a character because I feel the pain my characters feel. Seeing a character who was born in my mind and brought to life by my writing die is like losing a family member. It doesn't matter to me if they're a good guy or a bad guy. They're still people who are connected to me. I also understand why that's a good thing; it makes it real for the reader, too.
Writing and performing a song is practically the same thing. By pouring your emotions and heart into a song you've written, you make it something that the listener can not only hear but also feel. That's why I love listening to Sleep Token: I can feel the emotion they put into it. I hope they keep putting out the quality they did with Take Me Back To Eden. It was one of the best albums I listened to in 2023.

I'm really glad you found this and had this revelation. Honestly, watching your videos analyzing his voice drove me a little nuts because of how much you suggest that he overthinks and overplans everything. The voice can do remarkable things when you let go of how the voice "should" work and be authentic to yourself and your material. People need to spend less time trying to get it "right" and more time trying to make it REAL. Your summoning cover is good but there is so much of you trying to do stuff with your voice instead of just... getting in the song and delivering the vocal. With all the love and respect in the world!

I agree 100%, this is why I have such a hard time enjoying ST covers, I can feel the singers trying hard at delivering a perfect vocal and I truly feel like Vessel's singing is the opposite of that, it achieves a ridiculous amount of beauty and prowess through emotion and abandon.

I have never seen a musical artist express so much vulnerability in multiple performances. I believe it is what hooked me. I heard The Summoning and wondered if he could pull it off live. He did that and more. He is truly, deeply passionate about the music and the importance of giving us his all each time. You can’t help but be drawn in. And I could write essays on the very deliberate choices he makes musically, from hitting discordant notes to signal something going wrong (Atlantic), to the ‘being in a chokehold’-like ending to Chokehold, and the splitting if his voice in Distraction (into fractions). This stuff is tucked throughout every song and performance. Ugh…. He’s a genius and I think we won’t know truly how much of one for some time to come.

  • @rmshredz

One of the reasons I like ST so much is that I've always thought that there's so much storytelling going on in their overall composition, but especially the dynamics. Fall for Me from TPWBYT is my favorite example of that. It's one of their most emotional songs in my opinion, and it's entirely acapella and vocoder, but there is just so. much. emotion. in it. The arrangement could have easily been something akin to Ascencionism (which is another song I can rant about its genius), but their choice to leave it so bare bones paired with the painful vocal performance just absolutely screams 'vulnerability', and the fact that you can feel that through a studio recording is mind-blowing. Stuff like this can only be done by someone who feels music deeply and cares about the message behind every note and every lyric, and the video you just showed is another perfect example of that. Much, much respect for Vessel and his work with ST.

Yes Chris, I cried immediately, the moment he came back, so yes I agree! I also agree with your statement at the end of this vid. But for me there is difference in sharing the emotion, like Vessel did, which I can handle and 'taking' (externalize and occupy) the emotional space from the audience. The way Vessel the gift (as you mentioned in one of you vid's) to the audience remained intact, but occupying the emotional space (which some singers do) is the opposite. Thank you for sharing this!

Oh, buddy- I might be too late for you to see this, but this isn't the first time. Far from it. He cries at the end of the original studio version of Blood Sport, during his recorded speech while playing Drag Me Under and also cried while closing with The Offering at the show I went to at Louder Than Life. This isn't just music to him and the band. This is life. This is a second chance.

I think I really noticed how much emotion he packs into his performances on the studio version of Ascensionism, at the end when he takes that breath then just absolutely lets it out. Watching people have spiritual experiences reviewing Sleep Token's music has become my new favorite pastime.
Vessel is such an amazing singer and it's those little things that make him so otherworldly to me, the small sounds, his delivery, the abandon, the way he breathes, hell, even the silences. I truly recommend you watch the entire From The Room Below show, there's a few compilations on YT. I never in my life felt such vulnerability from a singer or such a deep emotional connection with a man just singing with a guitar and a piano with wither a mask or his back to the crowd.
