In this video, Jason Vong shares his solution on using a smartphone as a camera monitor. While he personally uses the Sony XPERIA PRO with a unique HDMI connection, unfortunately for most, it would be an incredibly expensive solution. Comments on his social media posed whether or not a cheaper solution exist for iPhone and Android users. The answer is a yes! Both "Imaging Edge" and "Monitor+" are FREE apps that allow you to transmit your Sony camera feed to your phone! There is also a paid version of "Monitor+" which opens up pro monitoring features such as Zebras, Peaking, LUT Preview, and more! However, Jason also shares the drawbacks he experienced using both apps. Would it be enough to sway people to still buy a dedicated monitor? Or is it usable enough for the general public? Hi Jason, I am looking to introduce this to my kit as external monitor. What is the difference of using as external monitor the XPERIA PRO aside from having exclusive HDMI port and that you can simulations charge it through the usb c port, compared to the XPERIA PRO I or any of the other XPERIA taht supports the external monitor feature through USB-C only? Is there any functionality difference or output resultion difference?

What other monitors do you recommend under $200?
I like using the Monitor+ app alongside another actual monitor. It’s really nice being able to have a permanent waveform /exposure monitor (especially since you can make the monitor+ entire screen be waveform if you choose), while my main monitor is just a clean feed for focus and composition without distractions.
Alongside that the awesome control options that are better laid out than the actual cameras, and saving proxy photos/videos straight to phone has been awesome for quick sharing on socials, or sending clients previews when they want footage right away
Pro tip! Enable the zoom controller in settings under accessibility. Then you have a little bit more of a zoom to check focus.
I've been using the paid version of Monitor+ for some time now and more often then not I'm having a very low latency and the quality is set to High. I give my phone to my assistant and when my FX3's focus mode is set to Touch Tracking he can tap on the phone and change the focus, which is so convenient for my type of work. Love this app, sometimes it can be laggy, though. I've noticed that it depends on the environment you shoot in and if there are a lot signals to interfere with.

Just want to mention that for the Monitor+ users, if you change the "Live Preview Quality" from High to Low the latency issue is much much better. Worth to mention!

I didn't realize imaging edge could do so much! It seems so basic on my Android phone. But now I want to hook my phone up over USB c and try it. I've been transferring photos that way but never knew it could be a freaking monitor!
Something important to say that seems no one adress is the fact that in cameras like a7iii or iv, and the other lower alphas when you connect an external monitor via HDMI you lose the ability to use face tracking for focus. Also with the app paid or not if you use the cable usb c to usb c you still lose the face focus tracking.

You can in fact zoom in the monitor+ app. If you have a focus mode selected that isn't AF-C then you can just double tap on the screen and it will zoom. It zooms using the built in zoom on my Sony A7m4 (ie you can see it zoom on the camera also) so its high quality
I just use an hdmi to usb c capture adapter and the USB Camera Pro App with my Pocket 4k, and it works just fine as a field monitor. I cant change any setting obviously, but i dont really need that.
it’s also important to note that you’ll need a newer Sony Alpha camera to support these apps. For example. My Sony A9 and Sony A7rII aren’t compatible.

I just tested it with my A7IV and have nearly no more lag, when I switched the in camera WiFi to 5GHz. But need to test more. Mostly stable 30fps in Monitor+ statistics
go outside and try it more, you will see the problem. Bad experience for serious work.

Now, after I updated the Sony a7IV firmware to 2.0, it no longer connects.
Big regret was doing this update.

@@gianmarcobalbi9638 my ipad has usbc connection and so does the zve10, I just use a usbc to usbc wire and connect them and then on the ipad I got the free app called monitor + and it works without latency

Great video Jason! I use external monitors for my weddings. The Ninja 5 is pretty heavy with the battery. I really want to be able to touch to focus and track and I like having false color.

Monitor plus paid version is so worth it imo. I notice that latency is much better on it than image edge too.

what about the playback directly in the phone in the paid version of monitor+ after recording which imaging edge (now creators app) still doesn't have. That can be one good reason amongst others to upgrade don't you think ?

Your Imaging Edge Version looks vastly different to mine. Does the interface change, when you use newer cameras? I'm using the A7iii and there is also no such thing like "touch to focus"
I am owner of A7iii and I am afraid that this function are not available for our camera :-( But maybe I am wrong, hopefully! Is there anyone who has different experience?

Nice video. One problem with monitor + for a7iii (and similar older model) users is it disables in camera image stabilization.
When you shoot handheld ? Or with a tripod or gimbal??
@@Jun-hj2ps The in camera stabilization gets deactivated regardless if you shoot handheld, on a tripod, or on a gimbal. monitor+ disables it. It gets greyed out in the menu once you connect to monitor +.
The Sony app refuses to start recording when I want to film in 4K and SLOG3. Unfortunately, Monitor+ also refuses to work with my A6000 or 6300.
What do you recommend more for photography sony a7 r iii or sony a7 4?

Advice: Secure the cable on your camera. It's easy to ruin your USB or HDMI port. The A7RIII has a small and nifty holder delivered with it. You might have ignored it during unpacking.
I use an otg cable to connect to my android and there is no lag. I think I will pay for the full version till I can buy a dedicated monitor
Wont they ever release an update so there is no latency with monitor + by connecting a cable from the camera to and iphone?
Also, is the resolution low because it's wireless? Does the cable with an android device allow better resolution?

I have paid for the pro version of monitor+, hopping record a backstage of my photoshoot. But, the app didn't have any kind of recording mode in photo mode, even there is an option to activate that. And they always show where the focus box, so I can't using my android screen recording features. any ideas?

you can wire your connection to an iPhone using their USB A to Lightning and a normal USB A to your camera´s USB C or a micro USB. You should also be able to use an HDMI to lightning connection and then an HDMI to micro HDMI you should be able to playback with that. I have been using a wired connection to a Sony A6500 and it works well and has almost no lag.

You can use a HDMI to type c capture card on Android phone and use it as normal monitor

My lcd on my Sony Alpha 68 only shows a white screen. It’s likely broken and I don’t want to pay to have it repaired. I have an unused iPhone 5s lying around. Can anyone tell me if I can connect the iPhone to one of the ports on my DSLR so I can have an image displayed?
for any fxIII a7siii users, make sure your wifi connection is set to 5ghz, your connection will be better when using this monitor solution.

My grain of salt: DO NOT buy this app if you're on iPhone. I made the mistake and bought it too impulsively after a few quick tests with steady shots... but once the camera is moving, either handheld or worse, on a gimble.. the lag makes the monitor totally unusable.

Heh. I've got a feeling that the USB-C iPhone that Apple is being forced to make is going to give a dope connection option for these apps. However, I'm curious if there are iPad apps. The iPad mini would be a pretty solid device to use as an on-camera monitor, with the USB-C port, decent-sized display and light weight. Plus you can use that to do data backups when done monitoring :)

you need to do your reserch Camera Connect and Control lets you use the phone to totally control the camera.
on Nikon D5500 you can connect either using wifi or USB. far superior to anyrhing you reviewed.
As a Pixel user I can say that Imaging Edge is such dog shit for us, but the iOS version looks more polished.
You know what I think you sold me on the cheapo monitor. I have no idea why camera plus phone is such a pain when the whole world wants it.

Company that made this app is shady as hell. It doesnt work with any of my android devices minus my Galaxy S8. I have no idea why this is. All my other devices are newer and ofcourse support OTG but it wont connect. IT detects the camera, but just fails to connect. I emailed the company, its been 2 weeks since with no answer. Long story short....just buy a real monitor. Idea of this app is great, execution on delivery was horrible.
