    Lin Manuel Miranda explained that with this song he wanted to showcase the speed at which Angelica's brain works. That's why the music gives a sense of a slower pace compared to the singing - because her brain is literally constantly dialed up, same as Alexanders'. If you see the live, this is emphasized by everyone moving really slowly around her. Love your reaction videos!

      if you look at it that way, you can also hear that when she first talks with Alexander the music sounds faster than the singing, which is because how she says before she was so blown away by him, that she even forgot her own name. and that, my friends, is how you let music tell a story.

    • @raychxd7863

      Exactly

    • @papayapapaya4024
      @papayapapaya4024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      in addition to this, when Angelica interacts with other people it's like she slows down to their pace (when she slows her mind down to talk with Eliza then everyone else around her seems to be moving in normal speed and when she moves in slow motion to dance with Washington) but when she first talks to Alexander, she doesn't need to slow down to be able to communicate with him. His mind is moving just as fast as hers and he's able to meet her at her level.

      Nah, because it's cool to see how he interprets it "cold." Like notice how he picked up on the fact that Angelica was recalling an event just based on the music. It gives us a sense of what work the musicians did to convey the story. Although of course I would also like him to react to it AGAIN after having watched the show. So demanding.

    To make it easier to understand; Angelica is the oldest Schuyler sister and as the oldest her job is to marry a rich man (because her father doesn’t have any sons, and thats pretty much all a woman could do back then). So at a party (this party takes place during A Winter’s Ball/Helpless), Angelica spots Hamilton first and really likes him. However, she knows she couldn’t marry him because he’s broke so she introduces him to her younger sister Eliza instead. Eliza and Hamilton get married, and Angelica sorta realizes that Hamilton is the one who got away. However she would never say that because she values Eliza’s feelings over her own. Essentially in this song Angelica is doing her maid of honor speech at their wedding but in her mind she’s replaying the night she let Hamilton slip through her fingers. Hope that helped :)

    • @alexbridge3847
      @alexbridge3847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Great summary.
      In real life Angelica was already married at the time of A Winters Ball/when she met Alexander, however there are letters that have flirting between them that were saved.

    • @kiwilerner
      @kiwilerner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@alexbridge3847 Yep! And also, IRL she had older brothers, so that's a bit of artistic license--hey no harm, no foul. As an oldest daughter there'd be pressure for her to marry well either way.

    • @douglasrau5094
      @douglasrau5094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kiwilerner And she was also already married to John Baker Church when the Schyler family met Alexander Hamilton. It just adds more dramatic tension to the story to rewrite it as her being single so that she could have married Hamilton but put her desires aside for her sister. Also, it was Baker Church who provided the pistols for both Philip Hamilton and Alexander Hamilton’s fatal duels.

She is rewinding back in time, and in the show they have a turntable that rewinds and they do the choreo from the previous song which is SO cool to watch. And fun fact, if you ever listen to Burn, Satisfied is just a sped up version of that song as well, noting the differences between Angelic and Eliza, especially since this melody is emphasized when Angelica speak to Eliza in this song.

You are spot on when you talk about how hard it is to tell a story. It took Lin 20,500 to tell Hamilton's story. If this were a convention musical it would end up being more like a 12 hour musical.

    I love how you education when you use musical terms. You don't assume that everyone knows all the jargon. You are right her voice is just that great.
    Back in memory. A very good guess, You are right! He had to use 20,500 words to tell the whole story! That is so over the top on the word. If Hamilton was done at the same rate as most musicals it would be about a 12 hour musical.

    Yeah. The story they're telling is that originally Angelica was deeply attracted to him because he's not only good looking but is as fiercely intelligent as she is, but then she realized that 1) she's supposed to marry rich and he's poor and 2) her sister Eliza has fallen in love with him. Eliza could marry him because she's the younger sister and thus doesn't have to marry into money like Angelica, so Angelica gives Alexander to Eliza, even though it breaks her heart. The girl's nothing if not pragmatic.

    Spoiler Alert: What's happening in the song is that Angelica, who's singing, is recalling first meeting Alexander and falling for him. But she sees her younger sister, Eliza, is also smitten with Alexander. And since it's Angelica's duty to marry up for money (Alexander is poor), she introduces him to Eliza. When Alexander and Eliza get married, Angelica rationalizes her happiness by saying at least she'll "still have Alexander's eyes in my life."

    This song is probably the most historically inaccurate in Hamilton; there is no evidence that Angelica ever loved Hamilton, or vice versa. In fact, she was already married with children when she met him. They had a bit of a flirtatious relationship, but likely that was just their personalities. Philip Schuyler, the sisters' father, did have sons (I think he had 3 or 4), as well. THAT BEING SAID: this is one of the greatest songs of all time. I die every time I hear it.

They found that pre-recorded sound did not work well for the show, except it is needed for that section. The presentation is beautiful in the Disney+ pro-shot.

    I don't know if someone else has mentioned this but one of my favourite things in Hamilton is how Lin reuses the same melody for each character... You'll notice that that melody of the piano here in Angelica's solo is the same melody that is used in "The Schuyler sisters" when Angelica is being introduced farely in the background, almost subliminally connecting that melody to this specific character. He's truly a musical genius in my eyes.

    Angelica - the one singing - liked Alexander, but as she was already married and her sister - Eliza - already liked him, she decided to introduce them and endorse their marriage, without ever saying that she's in love with him. She spent her entire life loving him and not saying anything, because she valued her sister's happiness more than her own.
