      The first man in this series, was sentenced to life time in prison för revolt. He learned to write in prison, wrote about his life, and the time before the revolt. Fantastic handwriting! A book on his stories are published. He was pardoned in 1867.

    The sami have quite an asiatic touch, some more some less. Beautyful and strong people. Such a hard but full life. Sadly they had gone through so much racism. But they were resilient.

    Her er et bredt utvalg av bilder fra ulike perioder. Vi ser blant annet fengselsbilde (det første bildet) av Kautokeinoopprører Anders Bær, fotografert rundt 1865, en gjeng med Rafsbotninger fra et bryllup i Alta på 1870-tallet, raseforskningsbilder fra Finnmark og Tromsø av italienske og franske antropologer på 1880-tallet, og et og annet bilde tatt av lokale fotografer på ulike steder i Sapmi.

    I get so confused.Most of the Sami on this series of photographs look" European" and a few have distinctive Asian traits.This i can also see among my south Sami friends in Sweden.I know this topic is so sensitive due to historical reasons and fears of stereotyping, but it is in a way we do not see see among other Scandinavians although some Sami today want to say so. Do you know?Beautiful pictures of a proud and unique people anyway

    • @ColourYourPast
      @ColourYourPast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As a Sami myself, I think it is natural that we look very varied. Some of our ancestors were probably from the arctic Siberia, while others had their roots in Europe. And people blend in with eachother through time. There is no compelte distinctive look you can put a finger on. And we should be glad for that. What define Sami people are also the common culture, languages and art, that separate us from the Scandinavian peoples with German-european roots.

    • @neuroleptika
      @neuroleptika 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is a sensitive topic, but as you know Sami as a race doesnt exist in Scandinavia anymore, its a culture now. The reindeer herders in russia where the sami came from as recent as 2500 years ago is what they looked like, then they mixed with finns, swedes, norwegians, spanish and portugese fishermen, thats why they have such a variety in looks and genes. This is why sami refuse DNA tests to determine who is sami or not (to be allowed special privilege in laws and right to own reindeer), but they use family and cultural ties. Ive had sami girlfriends, and these topics of sensitive truths are so Taboo they themselves rarely if ever admit or talk about it, and google wont do you any good.

    • @ColourYourPast
      @ColourYourPast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@neuroleptika As a Sami myself, I don't see any problems that the Sami are mixed through times with others. It IS a cultural, not biological root that define who you are, and I am sure most people, also Sami agree on that.
      But it is kind of intereseting to research where people have wandered through times and blended in. DNA-tests in sami population show a link to Ural, amongs others, which is the cradle for Russian speaking people in ancient time. And I must admit, president Putin DO look a little like a Sami man. I guess some of the genetics are the same for him and us.
      It is not right to use the term "race" now any more on modern human beings, it is an outdated view on people. from old racial researchs. Moden humans are variatons based on A race, as I have read in scientific articles. And I believe in that.

      @@ColourYourPast Im glad you dont struggle with it, but many sami do in secret, alot of sami families carry a secret and unnessecary shame about alot of things in history. Mental health is poor as a whole within sami and alot of suicides, you know this. Google the yakuts and nenet people in russia to see the original sami

      Mostly because of the hair. You have to remember that however each specific human physical feature as well as all colors of our eyes, hair, etc are inherited traits from early Homo sapiens and certain genetic data carried on through generations. One guy in my class in the old school days in the northern parts of Norway had blonde colors and blue eyes, easily sunburnt, but his body features were typically west african, and his hair was purely southern african in the most traditional sense (very curly, it was like a mat and sort of hard). The genetic data for each type of hair is inherited and can even rest in some generations and then reoccur, as genes from our parents "compete" automatically for presence.

    Found out my grandfather has sami genes and he looked a lot like these people. But he never told us much about it. I wonder why he was born in austria. Do you have a clue?

    • @ColourYourPast
      @ColourYourPast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is not the genetics that define if you are a Sami. The blending with other peoples over time, have made us Sami people very varied in genes, all though there are certain features that still shines through. Living /or belonging within this culture, is the definition of a Sami person.
      Of course it is exciting to look in to genes, but it is not an answer to something in a clear, defineable way.
