Sámi Grand Prix is an annual Sámi song contest organized by the Sami Music Festival and held in Kautokeino, Norway. The first annual Sámi Grand Prix was held in 1990. The winner of the contest goes on to compete in Liet International, a music competition for European minority languages. The Sámi Grand Prix consists of two separate parts: a yoik part and a song part.

It is uncanny how similar this is to the singing of so many tribal people all over the world. It is almost as if humans all over the world have a collective, instinctual, natural, primal form of singing...Earth Music... and then there is the "civilized" singing which is so rigid and artificial that it is almost... alien...

The tattoos have also the same similarity. You can see similar tattoos in tribes in Africa, Alaska and New Zeeland.
I think it may be because it was meant to carry over great distance or to echo. Remember that many of these songs are sacred and intended to reach the spirt world.
Its not really that uncanny if one would only sit down and LISTEN, its ALL the same, just different location and different dialect.... When you understand that, you know its the same.. .. All one needs to do is STOP, sit down, open your mind

After hearing this, the idea that Vikings reached the Americas 1000 years ago suddenly takes a whole different meaning.
The Sami were not Vikings. There was some interaction and trade, but they were seperate people.

Non, ce n'est pas la même chanson. Vous pouvez réécouter attentivement. C'est la particularité des musiques traditionnelles dans le monde entier : un aspect répétitif et .... envoûtant

Can anyone provide translations of the yoiks they're singing? I know much of it is vocables, but I'd like to know what and for whom they are yoiking.
Yoik for the most part has no lyrics. Quite similar to Native American chants

i see your point but i disagree of it being a good solution, the very nature of that kind of singing/culture is not rooted in mere entertainment. The vry act of competing with it is more killing it than preserving it.

From the little I know of The Sámi, they`re not one people, but a number of nomadic tribes? Strange thing is, I hear bagpipes!
