    This episode brought great peace to my heart regarding Paul’s verses about women and submission. Where an acute feeling of discomfort once was is now a greater understanding of the verses, and for that I’m so GRATEFUL! ❤

    One of my children (then about 11) said his siblings all had talents - music, art, writing - and that he didn't have any.
    I held him by the shoulders and said, 'Your brain is a work of art, and don't let me ever hear you say differently!'
    He pondered on that. Later, he got an award for a poem/story, played two instruments, and ended up in a very technical career. So glad he didn't give up on himself!

    Hank, I was very touched by your story of your wife sharing that her mother had passed away. I lost my mom when I was expecting our fifth child, and I felt like I'd lost my best friend. Fortunately, I've been blessed with wonderful friends who, although can't replace her, have been good listeners and very supportive through my trials. It's been one of those compensitory blessings from a loving Heavenly Father.

    Regarding Corinthians 11:3, Sister Woodger, you described this concept so beautifully. It is something I have believed for a long time but could never find the right words to adequately describe it or even define it in my mind. In order to understand what Paul means, it requires a deeper understanding than what it may seem like on the surface. You said everything perfectly. Thank you.

    I probably listen to the podcast about four times in the week. I listen when I'm in the garden watering my plants at the end of the day often. And it seems very appropriate that as I am nurturing my plants, you are helping nurture me with the word of God. I'm just fallen in love with Paul and he is going to be a topic of study for me. Thank you for all you fo and your wonderful speakers too. Nancy Veit

    Sister Woodger's explanation of what Paul meant about wives and women in his letter to Corinth was MIND BLOWING to me. We are submissive in the sense that those who preside can SERVE us. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I LOVE this podcast so much, it is changing my life in all wonderful ways. (bringing me closer to my Saviour and Father in heaven,, improving my youth sunday school teaching and just making me a better person!) THANK YOU _ THANK YOU!!! this is by far my fave of all the "come follow me" podcasts and all are good. Yours is exceptional!!

    I really enjoyed the portion of the podcast where y'all were talking about the difference between the gifts of knowledge and of wisdom. There sadly seems to be a great misunderstanding in the world today about the importance of having or seeking after wisdom, as well as what things truly are or are not realities. Thank you all so much for this podcast which helps to expose the truth and wisdom of all existence to the world.

    I love learning to understand Paul in the context of the culture of his day, especially the Greek culture. I have misunderstood Paul, and am happy to think of him as a revolutionary in his equality of men and women. My introduction to the gospels was listening to the BYU lessons on scripture, and Dr. Wooger and the other "4 wise people" who taught me so much.
    I feel like I am visiting a good friend.

    I hope that millions of women, especially those who have an incorrect view of Paul's teachings and his regard for women heard Mary Jane's discussion of where the disregard for and oppression of women really began. To learn that the early Greeks men like Socrates said that women were halfway between an animal and a man and referred to them as the weaker sex, is most instructive. I loved her statement that "submission is not gender based." Just as Christ is submissive to Our Father in Heaven, all of us can be submissive to our leaders who love and protect and guide us. Thanks for these important insights.

    We do need to love ourselves as we love our neighbor because we can love our neighbor only as well as we love ourselves. This is reversed in that we can love ourselves as much as we love our neighbor. This is why I believe God put these two loves together. Naturally we see loving ourself as a selfish thing and it is when we hold onto the newborn view as believing we are the center of the universe. That is not even loving oneself. The ability to love ourselves as we love our neighbor is when we learn the true self and love ourselves in a way that we replace negative thoughts and habits that are detrimental to ourselves and begin to put others above our needs and desires and discover that when we do this those desires and needs can be fulfilled by an all capable God in greater ways than we had even imagined them being fulfilled.

    Could Sis. Woodger please provide her source for Socrates' position that a woman is halfway between a man and an animal? I can't find that anywhere although I did find Plato's quoting Aristotle that "the female is, as it were, a deformed male" among other things 😑 Ah, ancient Greek men! 😄 Thank you.

      Also modern day men. I grew up with the same theology, as a Mennonite, that men are the head of the household. Every thing Dr Woodger talks about, without tacking on LDS nomenclature.

    I use your some of your quotations in preparing my Gospel Doctrine "Come Follow Me" lessons. It would be very helpful if you would include the references for your quotations from General Authorities. I like to include documentation for all the material I present. I can't find Elder Maxwell's quotation on spiritual gifts used in this week's podcast. Thank you for you and your yours guests sharing your talents and knowledge.

    Also, I really love the podcast!!! I just keep getting distracted by the pronunciation and I had to say something. I’m sure other places pronounce it differently so it’s not that you’re wrong. Just that I couldn’t take it after listening to the same pronunciation in last week’s episode without saying something .

    I saw Corinthians 8 a little differently. I thought it was saying that we should watch our example and not justify partaking of something that could give another person an excuse to give into temptation or not try to live the higher law. For example if a new member is trying to keep the word of wisdom and sees me drinking a coke or eating a lot of meat they might justify not making the effort to abstain from coffee or thinking the "healthy eating" part of the word of wisdom is not that important. As a teenager a lot of us justified "making out" as long as we didn't go all the way. This would not be a good example to someone who is struggling to live the law of chastity.

    Can Mormons not drink a coke?

    • @jacobjensen8592
      @jacobjensen8592 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's not against any Church principle (Word of Wisdom) to drink Coke. I choose not to drink Coke cuz it makes me feel lousy. I also don't drink any soda for that matter. The Word of Wisdom (aka health code) at its more simple understanding teaches to abstain from drinking coffee or tea as well as alcohol. Also not to partake of harmful or illegal drugs or smoking of any type. For a more detail version of the word of wisdom, it can be found in Doctrine and Covenants section 89.

      Yes, they can. Many saints extrapolate the Word of Wisdom to mean what it does not say. We believe the Word of Wisdom to be a marvelous revelation that has substantially added to the physical welfare of the body. It has three prohibitions: tobacco, alcohol, and hot drinks. A few decades after the revelation was received it was agreed in General Conference that hot drinks meant coffee and tea. Although the purpose of the prohibition on tobacco and alcohol is obvious, many saints have pondered why coffee and tea. The usual answer is that each contains caffeine. From this knowledge they then extrapolate the revelation to mean it is caffeine that is prohibited. Thus, they reason that any drink containing caffeine is prohibited. The end result is they are putting words into the Lord's mouth. Since Coca-Cola has caffeine, some feel they must not drink it.

    • @juliehurdman2257
      @juliehurdman2257 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like somewhere along the line people tried to make sense of the Word of Wisdom saying not to drink coffee or tea by concluding the caffeine was the problem. This took hold culturally, and some still adhere to it.
      It's interesting to make a comparison between the WoW and the Law of Moses kosher laws. Eating pork isn't inherently evil, nor any worse for your health than some other meats, but abstaining from it sets you apart and is a way for you to signal to God your willingness to be obedient. I imagine it as an affectionate little smile and a wink between the two of you at meal time.
      As far as alcohol, Jesus drank wine and promised His apostles that He would drink it again with them at His Second Coming. And yet we don't drink right now, because we have currently been given instructions not to. And I'm grateful for that, because it's saved me a lot of money and hangovers. 😂

    Why would you even have a conversation on this topic concerning coke? That is cultural and no one should use it as an example of something even close to crossing a line. Very turned off that we are still talking about it like it could be sonething wrong.
