  • After more than a decade of paying their dues on the road, nine studio albums of mixed success, and eleven singles that mostly struggled on the Hot 100… The J Geils Band was way overdue for their big break.. As luck would have it they entered the 80s just as a new sound was storming the airwaves, they finally figured out what listeners were looking for. Led by a semi risqué #1 hit, Centerfold about the singer finding out his once girlfriend is posing in magazine this song punctuated with some of the catchiest pop hooks known to the 80s, enabling this band to finally break through years after battling it out on the charts. They paid their dues for 14 years.. They ruled 1982 with Centerfold going to #1 for 6 weeks and the Title track Freeze Frame going to #4, they they pretty much vanished. It was so popular, I sang it in church as a 7 year old kid and got in huge trouble. The story of the song is . . NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. We haven’t done one this in a while. In this show we breakdown songs, albums or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career. On previous episodes we have covered Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis and the News, Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, and West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys. Today we are telling the story behind the J. Geils Band and their 1981 hit Centerfold.
The J Geils Band has quite the history…they first came together in 1968 after charismatic singer Peter Wolf and drummer Stephen Jo Bladd left their group The Hallucinations. They teamed up with a Boston-based trio called the J. Geils Blues Band named after it’s guitarist John Warren Geils Jr., known professionally as Jay Geils. The two others in the band at the time were harmonica extraordinaire Magic Dick and bassist Danny Klein. Soon after, the group dropped ‘Blues’ from its name and added keyboardist Seth Justman as well. Although it would take some persistence on his part. By the time Seth had moved to Boston, he had already been in several rock bands. His first night there he caught a show by the J. Geils crew.
Said Justman, “I really thought that if I could jam with them, they’d let me join ... so I approached Jay and asked him if I could play with the band.”However, they weren’t interested in Seth. But that didn’t stop him from calling Jay every day to see if he had changed his mind. After three months of calls, and following the band to nearly all of their gigs, they finally gave in and made Seth a permanent part of the lineup.

The band may have struggled on the singles chart before centerfold, but “love stinks” was a top 40 hit and it is very iconic especially around Valentine’s Day. And “must’ve got lost” was a top 20 hit in 1974. For a band that was struggling Peter Wolf got to marry Faye Dunaway so he didn’t do too bad

For as long as I could remember, "I Must Have Got Lost" and "Love Stinks" were staples of their rotation. When I go back home and tune to 102.5 WDVE, they still have them in the rotation. I was 12. I fell in love with Centerfold. I was in the car with my sister Debbie (9 years older) on the day it hit Number 1 on the charts. We were listening to the Top 40 Countdown and Casey finally introduced Centerfold at the top and we were excided. In January 1982 J. Geils Band actually came through Tallahassee, Florida. Both my sisters Debbie and Cindy (8 years older) took me to the concert and it was a blast. Great memories with my sisters I cherish to this very day and moment, especially since Debbie passed away of cancer in July of '82, just 3 weeks shy of her 22nd birthday. Nearly 40 years later, in June of 2022, sister Cindy passed away. The memory of that concert came flooding back. Both my sisters knew their baby brother loved that song and album and wanted to treat me to a great show (by the way, U2 was their opening act). I still vividly recall the three of us standing on our seats when Centerfold came on.
This video, I admit, makes me sad. At the same time it makes me happy because of the fond memories with my sisters I have cherished all this time. Thanks Adam.

It made me think of that popular kids band ( that I can't remember the name of right now) with three young boys as the band and a young girl singer who played the Kansas state fair and such and cut remakes of some popular songs by adult artists. And although being SO young they played Black Dog by Led Zeppelin. What do you think about such young children professionally playing a song with such lyrics?

The story with your dad was cool!! I was a Theology student in college and was asked to do a sermon in my home church. The pastor said the topic was up to me but wanted it to reach some of the teen parishioners. I chose to do a sermon hope and making you own changes. The congregation looked puzzled as I walked to the pulpit with my boom box and cassette tape set it down and pushed play. It was early 1985. I played the opening to Lets Go Crazy by Prince and started into a sermon on God being the button when the elevator of life got you down. I was kinda scared of what the reaction would be. The kids LOVED it. The older parishioners thought the message was good and wanted to know who the artist was and the name of the album. Lol. I simply suggested that was a question they should ask their kids. Lol. Yes I was afraid the would buy the album an then hit the song Darling Nikki. Thank you for bringing back this memory it's made my day. Btw I now work for an architect never did become a minister

A friend bought the cassette right when it came out. We were in high school, and a bunch of us headed out at lunch piled in the back of his pickup. He parked in the mall parking lot, kicked open the doors, and cranked up his new cassette. Another guy got out, and started to light up a smoke and heard (very loudly) “Freeze frame!” And he about messed himself. Then the song started and he realized it wasn’t a cop yelling freeze at him. We all fell over laughing when he told us what he was doing. I always smile when I hear that song remembering that day.

Geils Band songs, "Centerfold" and "Freeze Frame," and The Cars tunes "Shake It Up" and "Since You've Gone." Their live version of Musta Got Lost is, still, one of their top songs and shows( Along with No Anchovies Please) Peter Wolf’s gift for ad libbing. They, also, did another live version of Nothin But a House Party in the movie Neighbors II. I think one of the best things about being the youngest siblings is hearing (or in my case, stealing) your older siblings music. As we grow up, usually we are most often guided into our musical journey by way of our friends. I was guided by my sister (4 yrs older) & my brother (2 yrs older). Each one had such different tastes as my sister was into funk, dance & R & B while my brother was more influenced by industrial, techno, new wave, and synthetic pop. Then my last & greatest influence was my Mom. She was all over the place but Motown was her staple. All these influences and yet, I turned out to be a metalhead who loves all the other stuff. Music is a blessing for me, just as this channel has become. Thanks to P.o.R. for all that you do.

I talked to one teacher at my school who remembers the J. Geils Band very well from her high school days. That chorus to 50 Ways is so infectious! “Hop on the bus, Gus! You don’t need to discuss much!”

@Anna Trail Doing well. We are getting ready for the holidays at the store. Haven't been buying any new records. Trying to be happy with what I have. I have been watching a channel called Historic Travels because he has videos about the Titanic. He is a good story teller and shows pictures and diagrams to explain things. My grandma's brother died on the Titanic. He was 17 and trying to emigrate to America. I also like learning about the other ships too.

Centerfold was an awesome song. When it came out there was a girl in junior high with me who had a fuzzy blue sweater she would wear that always reminded me of this song. I told her about it at our 30th class reunion and she thought it was hilarious.
My only regret is that it kept Journey "Open Arms" from ever reaching number 1.

As big as this album was and it was, I think that their previous album, Love Stinks, set the tone for future success. I realize they'd been around for quite a few years but it wasn't until, Love Stinks, that they came into my orbit. As for, Freeze Frame, it was an absolutely astounding album. To this day, Centerfold, gets me going.

I agree, and the song Come Back may have helped them see the success a little synth might bring. It may not have been a huge hit but I loved hearing it the few times I saw it on MTV.

"I must Have Got Lost" was huge. Little cover bands could do "Love Stinks" pretty easy maybe 5 chords.
