If you move to Catalonia, you really should learn Catalonia. It's like living in Quebec or Wales, it helps you more to speak the local language. It's the only way an outsider can truly feel like a citizen and involved community member. Catalonia peoples love their language, and is part of a unique culture in Spain.

Only around 17% of people in Wales speak Welsh, and they are mostly concentrated in the more sparsely populated north and west. It's a bit much to expect newcomers to learn a language that the vast majority of locals don't speak..Although it might apply if one was moving to a Welsh predominantly Welsh speaking area....Of course I know the history of how the Welsh language was suppressed by the English.

I Lived in Barcelona for about a Year and also Travelled almost into all of Spain and other EU countries.
I Liked Barcelona although it’s not my favorite place to live or enjoy life.
I noticed that most Foreigners end up in Barcelona mostly because of necessity, to offer their services or just to visit and Party. Most of them not as a First definitive Choice.
And while traveling extensively I learned that the rest of Europe are a lot more polite and empathetic towards themselves and others around them than Spaniards and Catalans in General.
The lack of of polite high standards is not exclusive for just Catalans but also is a trait for Spaniards in General, funny that its not only what I saw and felt they have in Common but also experienced that most of their traditions , festivities Dance folkloric music rituals religion art and collective history and even food had more in common with each-other than not. The ultimate proof of this commonality can be seen in all the profuse last names you can find in all of Latin America including the profusely Catalan last names all over the Americas , they came as one entity and they all benefited enormously from the400 years of plundering the rest of the world.
Also the Language difference it goes without saying that in all of Europe the language that catalans and native spanish speakers understand and can figure-out more is each-others, they even have more in common this way then with the rest of europe the pace the diction the Personal mannerisms you name it you can tell they are raised in the same family as like cousins share personality traits that are impossible to hide .
I am not kidding that I was very surprised to discover how Northern Europeans Germans and Italians were so much more Polite among themselves than Spaniards and including Catalans were as when treating each-other on a daily basis just so openly rough and rude. Something is up in the Social Fabric of Catalunya and Spain where I think the cause must be a sense they are oppressed by some
kind of authoritarian Curse , it must be the Monarchy . Although it’s Ironic that In all of Spain not only in Catalunya I noticed people treated each-other very poorly as if they had to prove they were the boss or morally superior at every opportunity. Quite Sad and exhausting keeping that up all the time. I feel that a round of hugs and authentic respect among themselves would be a first step to improve their wellbeing. Help others as in their own neighbors and take away a little of their very excessive self centeredness . In the long run I think Spain will figure this out sooner or later .
In my case we helped as Educators at a University in Catalunya it all went very well. Both parties achieved what we wanted. A succesfull although impersonal transaccion. Much more could have been achieved as in lasting connection and transcending progress and wellbeing. Now more than ever Spain can use more empathy and consideration towards eachother otherwise the World is just going to surpass them very soon and show them how to lend a neighborly hand for the. Benefit of all.

Hi! Catalan myself, in BCN. I find this interview really interesting, I always wondered how newcomers lived and expierienced the political turmoil that has been in the last decade about identity. I feel a little sad if people feel somehow alienated, it's true that we are more "closed" at the beginning compared to our southern neighbours, but when you are in you are in. Also, I wonder if this feeling is increased in BCN, because I personaly feel that we are a minority here xD, so maybe the sensation of "closedness" can be greater if we are few in numbers.

As a Catalan, to me it is a basic requirement that any person who comes to Catalonia, understands that Catalonia is not like the rest of the ”Spanish Spain”.
We are a nation without state, we have our own national identity, our own language, a rich wealth of tradition and a long history that goes back over a millennium.
We have been fighting to keep existing for centuries, being sandwiched between Spain and France, both the French and Spanish governments have been trying to erase us since the 1600s, and they haven’t succeeded yet.
Respect us, learn and speak our language, embrace our way of life and traditions, and you’ll be welcomed.
If you don’t want to do that, there’s dozens of Spanish speaking countries with Spanish culture you can go to.

Tu ves la diferencia entre todos dentro de España , pero cuando vienes a mi país Dinamarca , o algún otro país , solamente de ver como eres,
