The moosees (moose, meese?) are on thin ice. And there's no need to shoot, shovel and shut up. If you can make the case that the animal is not being a good neighbor the farmer can punch its ticket and report it to the game warden. As I read the statute, they investigate to make sure of the justification. The baggar gets to keep the baggee or it can be donated to an organization like mooseburgers for the hungry.

Guinea Fowls are great for bugs, ticks and snakes. Hanging bat houses will also reduce bugs, along with bird houses. Getting dragon fly eggs for around the pond to help reduce mosquitoes.

@@valerieforsyth8278 I got used to it. I love the little whistles and clicks they make to the chickens they walk around with. If you don't corner them they won't alarm at you. They are good alarm birds for the chicken flock I free range. The ticks went down to almost none.

I've never dealt with moose, but to keep the elk away from the fence, we tied long strips of yellow "Police Tape" all over the strands. It cut *WAY* down on the fence repairs.
I live in Western Kentucky where we have no free roaming elk or moose. We were in the dairy business until I was about 17 years old. We used to tie tin cans to our electric fences to make them more visible. The cans would also help train the cows to not mess with the electric fences because they would sniff the cans and get a shock.
That sounds like an outstanding tip. I sure hope that works for the Lumnahs too. Nice to see you here Bosco Bob! I've been homeless sleeping on people's couches for a while. A few places didn't have any internet connection so I've been out of touch. I'll have to go watch what I missed! I'm so glad to see you here. I'm back in Minnesota and having to get an apartment for myself and try to get the divorce finished. It's been a wild ride! I still have to go back and get my right knee fixed by the Osteopath and the Subaru engine rebuilt and drive it back here. Our divorce hearing is on August 2nd so I probably won't be able to go back until after that date. I'm set to move into my apartment July 12th. Crazy times! Years ago I purchased a full body net suit. It has a pull over top & pants pull up. Elastic that closed up the arms & legs so no tick access. Also has a zip on hood net. It kept me bug free during all my outdoor gardening.

You might try putting a signal flag along the entire fence line in a color animals can see or use a metallic bird scare tape. The animals destroy the fencing because they can’t see it. And it makes it easier for you to check the fence line.

Living Traditions Homestead is one of my favorite vlogers I watch faithfully, like I watch your channel. They are very thoughtful homesteaders, and really think through their choices in the things that they do. I do not know if this will work for you, however, they installed a fence system for their very large garden and orchard not only incorporating their fowl in the center of it. Not only does it keep the deer out, but provides them a chicken/duck run also. Apparently, deer (I don't know if this applies to moose) do not have great vision tp judge distance. They installed a double fence around their garden/orchard...go to their channel, it is worth a look at what they did, just a FYI. Love you guys, I am always praying for you.

Almost my comment exactly with the words toys, tools, and power T-post driver. Further, most back injuries are not done in an individual incident but rather created over misuse over time. As an off-grid agrarian, you need to protect against orthopedic injuries.

Im in the UK and years ago we used to have dead bugs all over the windscreen after driving on the motorway but that doesn’t happen anymore. Seems they’ve all moved to Lumnah Acres! 😄
An excellent observation, it’s a real issue, our apple plum and damson trees had far fewer fruit last year. There’s no flying pollinators any more☹️
In Australia, the outback station owners (depending on location) have trouble with wild camels damaging their fencing.

I recently suggested getting some horse fly traps. One will clear a small paddock in a week or so, and few moved around the pasture regularly should keep the wretched little beasts under control.
Good morning Lumnah family. I've never had a chicken do that before. I've had egg peckers before and had to track it down and get rid of. Fencing is never ending at times. Bugs that bad would drive be crazy. That will make for a lot more grazing area. Stay cool out there. Finally cooled off here. Thank you for sharing

@ 26:45 you could try welding a short piece of pipe ( 3 " pipe x 3" long ) on the mini excavator bucket, then place the top of the post in the pipe and use the excavator bucker to push the post into the ground ( might be worth trying )
Invest in a T post-pounder. The difference between the North and the South is that when it gets hot in the South, we jump in a swimming pool. In the North, you shovel snow. I'll take the South.
I believe you said that you lost one sheep because of worms, I’ve heard since you don’t use chemicals for your livestock that you can have burn piles in several pastures, the animals will eat charcoal which is a natural product to avoid worms in animals. Great job of expanding the fence for pastures. Looking forward to new livestock up coming.🙏👍👍👍👍
The One Sheep died a day after getting to farm, so the worm issue was already detrimental !

It depends on what type of animals you’re going to put in there as far as fencing. I don’t have a problem with anything big, the deer will jump over so coyotes so what I have done is four strands of wire down low and then I use a strand ofbarbless wire on the top and electrify it and the bottom strand. That keeps a coyote out, and when the deer jump it, they don’t break the top wire. I have Goats and a couple of miniature horses.

simple living Alaska used 12 foot high steel post and welded wire panels onto it.
I immediately thought of their Alaska project too but I don't think it would apply here beyond potentially Gina's secret garden. A huge rotating grazing pasture fence will never be moose-proof unfortunately.
Yes, SLA used steel posts 8 feet above ground and 4 feet below around their vegetable garden with what they called "wildlife" fencing - pretty rugged. North to Alaska also installed 8 foot high fencing around their vegetable garden using 4x4 wooden posts but both had much less linear footage than you are looking at.
Al you work so hard, praying that the moose don't take out the fence. Gina, I love it when you are doing the filming with all the stuff you show us that is in your area, flowers, moose tracks, just all of it. Blessings to you both.
Simple Living Alaska TH-cam channel just built a moose proof fence around their garden a couple videos ago. If you have some permanent area like your garden that you want to keep moose out of, then you might do something like they did around theirs. No way is any moose or most any wildlife going to get into their garden area. Check them out!
Shawn James also erected a moose deterrent fence I think the key is height- woven wire over 6’!

where I go hunting, a lot of cattle get ranged on the public land where Deer and Elk roam around. I see a lot of 3-wire barbed wire fencing... the wildlife can just jump over but keep the cattle in the area pretty well.

My 70+ year-old husband had to take two days to pound in 6 10-foot T-posts - after doing 3 of them the first day he had pain in his chest that reminded him of when he'd had a heart-attack 5 years ago! Finished it up this morning and I told him he'd gotten his upper body work-out!

The only thing I've seen work for moose was done on Homestead Rescue on Discovery where they used drill pipe to put in 8' to 10' tall fences with high tension wires.
I think fencing classes would be a great idea Ben and Jason have their butchering classes
We get up to 100% humidity, and we measure DEW POINT, which is usually 60+ sometimes as high as 75-80 Dew Point...with up to 100 actual temp so "real feel" can be up to 120 and feel like a sauna/jungle and that's normal for Eastern, NE. :) Blessings!

Moose will never respect any fence. Ending up on the end of a fork is the only solution.
Woven wire fencing 4’ tall with two hotwires above it (taking it to 5’6” in total) will keep most things out / in. The hotwires will catch the moose at nose level so should deter them from trying to push through the woven wire fencing. It won’t stop a full on charge, but if they approach at a slow enough pace that they check it out first it should stop them.
Good Morning Folks, When you get your sawmill, 6x6 by 8' posts with two by eight cross ties.. (Moose fence) 5 or 6 ft. high. You only need to put it on the side they come from.. Y'all have a great day.. Laugh, play and enjoy...
I live in the northern Central Valley of California. The high temp today was 92. We have had any rain since early April, and won't see any rain at least to November, maybe December. Because of that dryness, we don't have mosquitos, horse flies, or other annoying insects. Moreover, dry conditions are much more comfortable to work in.

And to keep the moose out up there, they had their fencing 8 ft hi schedule 80 steel pipe and I think 2, or 3 feet of the pipe in the ground.
Then they used husky cattle paneling, one stacked on top of the other, and all the way around the perimeter of their garden.

Al, I know you've had to spend a lot on your barn and workshop, but you have already put in many t-posts by manually driving them down. With all the acres you will eventually need to fence, if you do not change to the fiberglass posts with electrical wiring, how about working smarter now and purchasing a mechanical fence post driver?
ps. natural horsefly repellant,2 tsp, citranella oil and 3 ounce of witch hazel, shake and put in a sprayer... used to work good to keep them away.. There ya go...

Deer flies are the scourge of summer. The upside is they tend to be the worst when the mosquitoes aren't as prevalent. The population density of deer flies varies from year to year.

I was delighted to get a bag of coffee yesterday. I think the reason the last two varieties ( ice coffee and I like it) were available was because I had to scroll down the page to see them. Something to think about with the presentation of your coffee web page. If you can't see it immediately... it doesn't exist.
Nothing stops moose. We had to fence our 1acre with 8’ chain link, but that is not going to work for you. I think the only thing you can do is use something that is very visible so hopefully the moose will go around or over it. So good luck. I lived with moose for 30+ years.

In south central TX it was 78* with 87% humidity this morning. Now it’s 100* with 38% humidity- actually much better when it’s dryer even though the temp is higher. Glad we don’t get the harsh winters but summer pretty much stops all midday work outside around here.

My boss in Australia had a horse stud and used remote solar electric fencing at the farm to keep the horses within the paddock, he ran the solar along the top wire on suspension.
Good morning from Mid Coast Maine. We are finally getting a break from the heat. I grew up in southern Illinois and I tell you I'm not a fan. Stay hydrated and keep as cool as you can. 😅

We use central
A/C or window AC here in south eastern Virginia ..... a bit expensive to maintain 72F, but 75 - 76 is comfortable with a medium sized room fan.
They have a 'bit' attachment for your hammer drill which drives t-posts. You could throw one of your portable power stations in the back of the SxS to power it. You are putting in a lot of posts. There is also a t-post lever type puller they have at HF if you do not have one, when you move them.
I'll take the rain and humidity rather than dry. I was born in California so I very much appreciate humidity and rain. As a kid during the summer you wanted to be in a pool from 9 am till 6 or 7pm, or suffer heatstroke.
Oh one more thing. Take a bounce dryer sheet and fold it in your collar. That helps alot of bugs!!!

Tuesday it was 101 on the thermometer and Wednesday it was 100heat index around 110 🔥.
I'd like to see the house animals here and there too. With the space you have hopefully one day you'll be growing your own hay freed for the animals.

Al to keep moose out of and area you need a tall fence of at least 6 ft to 8 ft tall, short fencing of 4 ft the moose will jump over and rip down your wire. Also you can tie yellow caution tape on the wires of the fence it will also deter moose from crossing a fence,
My friend live in Alaska and here and her husband deal with Moose and Caribou as well as bears, and she said only tall strong fencing works the best.
She also said that a Moose can attack livestock to defend their territory or if they have taken over a feed yard or haystack.
With you losing George and the fence was knocked down it could have been a moose got after him and caused his demise.
Be careful with the really tall grass. It can irritate their eyes and cause pink eye.
The original "Oh so Soft" skin lotion from Avon makes an effective repellent. It contains citronella. I often use it at this time of the year when I'm working in my woodland.
