Yeah it's a special easy to access location. In 2017 Nelson Tasman Tourism used some night and day images from what I was calling Paradise Tarns, and were asking me to pinpoint the location so that it could be swamped by their Insta followers. I wouldn't tell them then but these days it matters less. I have a bunch of idyllic campspots found during photography obsession, most kayak accessed. I got the guy at gearshop to look up your channel. You mentioned your pack weight had got away on you again, same here, has to happen in winter really. You have some hefty gear, Steph wants to know what weight your pack was!... we weighed at 11.6kg and 8.4kg with 3 person tent, chairs, heaps of clothes but light food, cold soak lunches. We camped same night, last night, up at Cobb lake. Was crispy hoar frost, -3 to -4 deg outside and 6-10 deg inside the Qingkong3 winter version. I'm getting Lanshan2 winter version to have less internal volume for solo or two. We use a 2mx1.7m 2mm foam mat with foil laminate both sides as footprint or internal floor (noisy though), to cover radiative+convective loss. Then it's not grim if limbs are off the mat and might allow higher internal temp. Steph had some suffering so I got her an Exped R7.1 downmat... and I carry and fill her hot water bottle when needed. We only have lightweight Exped bags with 500gm of down but have Mountain Equipment baffled jackets and down pants. If it's cold can sleep in those plus Aegismax down sleepbooties and quilt the jacket inside roomy bag. If you want to sit around in subzero you could use a pair of Aegismax or Naturehike down pants off Ali. Necessary for winter all night standing still at the tripod or doing timelapses.
The more I hike the Cobb the more I appreciate it, so many aesthetic scenes and features. I've not seen the reservoir at full in 15 years, looked so good today with glassy reflection. We had a fire fail at Cobb lake, could not find any decent wood. Batoned a bit but didn't put in much effort because most of the wood was too far gone. Plenty of really nice contour-ice tarn/pond/lake margins everywhere which make awesome foregrounds with camera 5cm above the surface. We had a great time, looking forward to longer warmer days though.
@@kanehartill4178 where can I see your photos? Unsure of my pack weight next trip I’ll jump on the scales. I’d trim a lot of the weight if I didn’t take beer or fresh food but I don’t really eat many treats at home so I take them with me on the one night trips. The Cobb is incredible so many nice sports and always enjoy walking down the valley. What location did you pitch up at cob lake? There was plenty of standing dead trees in the forest below xenicus peak last I was there. Winter camping a bit miserable with no fire.

Just discovered your channel. What a great watch. Really well put together I watched until the end. Great work! I look forward to seeing more. Those burgers were epic too! Gotta try those on my next adventure.
Hey thanks glad you enjoyed it. I still think about the burgers lol they were amazing will do them again sometime. We just got back from a cool mission vid should be up soon
Awesome video mate. I love the Sylvester Tops. That isolated tarn is a classic spot . Good base to do a bush bash down to the Cobb valley. Excellent fire making skills and an amazing sunrise. One alpine place my older bod can still easily get too. Did an Iron Lake ascent to Iron Hill ridge in the spring last year. One of my favourite tramping areas. The twin tarns off island lake ridge is another neat place to wilderness camp.No drama to get there. Access via ridge above Round lake./Cobb lake. Great 360 views. Have fun discovering the other delights of Kahurangi. Thanks for sharing another great scenic tramping video.
@@AbelandVictoria Yep. All along from Mt Cobb to Mt Prospect and Camp lake is great country to camp. Then theres the mystery over the other side of the ridge with Lake Henderson. Once a stronghold for Rock wren. No tracks but great country to wander when the weather is settled. Best access via Round lake route track then work down the range back towards Mt Mytton.
@@bruceporter3400 cool I want to check the section out. Up above camp lake looked like good camping spot when we went there last winter. I’m keen to go to lake Henderson and down breakfast creek and get to roaring lion. Do you have any other cool spots in kahurangi?
@@AbelandVictoria The loop circuit into Lake Bulmer via Owen river & Bulmer creek. Access Owen river East Rd. Go up Owen river track. Cross river follow cavers track up Bulmer creek. After a few creek crossings ascend bushy tallis slope directly onto ledges in cliff faces south of Bulmer basin. Ascend into sth bush basin then uphill to lake Bulmer. Great spot. Rock bivvy & several camp spots. A whole day exploring bluff steps into Castle basin and surrounds. Exit via rock slab ridge to Sunrise peak ridge track. Descend back to upper Owen river. Awesome variety of terrain. Great tops exploring. Lovely river system. Best done in summer or autumn. Nelson Cavers group can give latest info on rough track up bulmer creek & route thru bluffs. Its not technical so no big drama. 2 nights out minimum.

Fantastic bro... My Dad and a few other local builders built Sylvester Hutt when I was about 14 years old and I had the opportunity to help out up there in the school holidays during the winter and I distinctly remember the wild weather and snowfall but that view is simply breath taking made it all worth it 😂 cheers

There's nothing better than getting to the camp spot and making some coffee and just sit back and chill for awhile! 🍻
Increíble momento lugar y amanecer...

You did it justice man! Fast and low drone into some epic light. Feasting, beers, fire, solitude, perfection.

I’m still thinking about them burgers. One of the good things about winter camping is being able to take food and keep it cold.

Hey mate. Yeah it was an epic camp. Snow coming to nz in a few days I think I’ll be going back there with Victoria for the snow storm
Wonderful spot m8.. your videos are truly inspirational thank you.
It’s the best spot. Very exposed to wind though. Hooping to get back there for some snow this year

Good stuff dude 👌
Thank you Aaron
Looks like a great trip. Did you see many others out their? I gotta get out again soon, to much time at home lately.
Was awesome. I seen a few people down at the car park. I didn’t go into the hut though.
Your early stuff is so different than your recent vids….really like the drone work and music, Abel! Miss The Tarp…lol!
Yea. Not allowed drones got in trouble with the authorities lol
Awesome camp spot!! And another cracker video! May I ask what that tune was, playing during the sunrise section?
Yeah it is an incredible spot for sure. The song is called emperor’s army
What sort of chair is that?
Skyline ul from big Agnes. Has been great so far
New sub!
Thanks👍
