Not sure how I missed this during lockdown but I found this today! I did it! Only change I made was I pulled my entire frame up instead of just the V. I'm absolutely in shock at how AMAZING it came out!!!!
My first attempt at cutting my own hair, without using a Flowbee! A hair dresser recently damaged the top part of my hair during a cut, and I was hesitant to visit another salon. I stumbled upon this video last night and went out today and bought $15 styling shears (Oster brand) and $23 blending shears (Oster). My hair came out SO AWESOME! I really like the wispy bottom and the many layers on top. The bangs shape my face perfectly, and my Boyfriend says I look like a Cyberpunk character :D I used the blending shears after cutting a straight line instead of the point-cut method in the video, but I love the look I got even more :) This whole experience gave me the confidence boost I needed, as well as save a lot of my hair length while still getting rid of all the damage. Thank you very much Paul
Hmmm, excuse me, what is this sorcery? I was hesitating for a while to get the shag/ wolf haircut, because my fine straight long hair hates layers and has no shape, I also don't like hair in my face, but when I saw your tutorial I decided to go for it. I did it at 2 am, I filmed, but I wasn't planning uploading it, but I think I will, because it looks great and I only found one diy vidéo using this tutorial. For those hesitating for fine hair, it actually gave mine lots of volume and looks great without styling it (I never style my hair, don't have any tools or products for this, hence why I was hesitant). No extra cut needed, the three chops are enough. I cut it à bit longer, so I went it to shorten a few strands on the top, but not much. And the answer to my biggest question, that I didn't find answer for: does it look good in a ponytail? Absolutely fucking yes, it looks amazing with the curtain bangs, and you can even do it with smaller bits of bangs. If you attach all your hair, there are some short hairs pointing, but you can avoid attaching it in the ponytail and use pins instead. The ponytail is smaller, but looks cute and fluffy if it's high. Overall, go for it, I was expecting to hate it, but I love it so far.
Glad to hear, I totally recommend it, it's my haircut now, it also looks good when it grows longer, so no need to cut often, and it looks amazing with no styling at all, also in ponytail, bun, pigtails, I never thought my fine hair would like layers, but i am not going back to long straight hair for sure. @@kaydavis3297
your tutorials have been so great!! especially during this time many people still aren't able to go out to salons to get their hair cut, these have been awesome c: and so do-able for someone cutting their own hair!
Tried this cut last night, it turned out great! Only cut off about half of what you did, thinking I wanted it longer - nah - the other half comes off tomorrow :) -- EDIT-- Word of advice, don't bring the side ponytails to the front to cut - hold them up & out like in the video! (Re: cutting more off/other half - my shoulder was sore so took the easy way out & now have two very blunt cut pieces on the sides, oops. Fixable, but atm, looks pretty stupid :P )
@@AD-lk4wu Oh dear! I feathered the blunt sections a bit by gathering it in chunks & upper cutting a bit about once a week - took close to 6 wks to get it looking not so stupid lol. Not perfect yet, but getting there. I (Could) have just chopped it all to even it out but wanted to keep the length. Another few wks & plan to try the cut again - properly haha - I like the shag look. (Oh & in the meantime I used mousse & a brush to curl it under so it didn't look so blunt, if that helps)
I love it 👍🏼 I only cut off the tips when I think it's necessary, after that they always fall great and look great. a tip: so that the hair on the pony doesn't get too short, i let a strand out at the front, otherwise it will fall out when i put on a ponytail. Thank you for the great video Paul 👍🏼
Hace unos días me hice el corte Kitty que subiste hace poco y hoy vine por este, estaba alaciado así que mañana veré cómo me quedó, muchas gracias por el tutorial 😍😍😍
This is a fantastic tutorial. So glad I found you. 😊 I have a couple of suggestions to help your viewers see what you do better. 1. Either wear a light colored shirt with dark hair, or get a lighter haired model dummy. Just like with sign language interpreters wearing a contrasting shirt so their hands can be seen better. 2. We could not see anything while you cut the top part. Your arm was directly blocking it. I would cut from the back side of the head in the future. Thank you for your videos! 😊❤
I can never get my hairdresser to give me this type of shag with shorter layers on the crown and I always have to alter it. I will try this - you are a genius Paul - thank you for sharing your brilliant technique.
Everyone loves this haircut, so I'm tempted to try...the issue I can't figure out is how short to cut the sides IN RELATION to the top...Like if the sides are 2-3 inches out from the ponytail holder, does that mean the top, too, should be cut the exact same amount?
I’m an old hairdresser here. The shag was my very first haircut. And now I’m going to go do it again. We used to call over direction “traveling” Looks like there’s pretty much very little chance of messing this up. Very cute. On my way.
I've had great success with the unicorn cut, but don't like the mullet shortness on the sides. I'm working on fixing layers from a reverse crown unicorn which was not good for my wavy hair. This cut seems to blend the layers well. This will be my new go to cut for my medium length wavy hair. I can never get good layers at the salon anymore.
This turned out great on my shoulder length hair. I had a bit of a "step" but I went back and recut a bigger top section and it blended better. So quick as well. Thank you!!!
If you’re wondering if you can do this, you can. I have absolutely no experience in hair but I was sick of it being heavy. My mom helped me the first time, & I’ve cut it by myself 3xs since. You have to take your time & make sure you get the parts right. And don’t cut straight. Just cut V’s into your hair (point cut) and that will make it shag & not jagged 😂 IVE NEVER IN MY LIFE HAD THIS MANY COMPLIMENTS ON MY HAIR!!!!!!!!!
Excellent example of fast condensed cutting! If we showed up at a salon, and they cut our hair like this,we'd think they weren't "professional",even if it turned out great! If it can deliver this fantastic of a look, why not?
Girl preach!!! I stopped going to my hairdresser bc she couldn’t / wouldn’t do this cut. My family calls it the mystical shag - been asking for it for years and can never find it 😂😂😂 finally tried this cut and I can’t count the compliments I’ve received!!!!!!
Absolutley love this. Great tutorial. I have noticed though, that in your videos, it is much easier to see the details of the cut on lighter colored hair. Just a wee suggestion 😉 Thank you for all you do. 💜
This is perfect! So much easier and takes out my problem of not being able to see the back of my own head! I have been cutting it somewhat but just cannot se the back and now it is too long and I just needed this! Would it be possible to show any short cuts to a Bob hair do? Personally, I seem to need layers and the Point cut for texture too. I ask hairdressers to point cut and about the bangs to eyebrows and they ask me so I let them know some of the ideas of what I think I should have but let them go with what they want in the end. But then find often they get it too short and they think I am too bossy I think and then they just cut it short sometimes, I get new people all the time at he mall. So maybe one or two do it nicely ,and when they give me a card ready with schedule they quit or change hours as it varies. I seem to need the layer cuts and used to have the Shag. If I ask for this, they act like I am talking in another language and they have another name for it! I honestly appreciate it and will try this the day after Easter! I get afraid though have to admit, but now that I see how it looked when you took it out of pony tails, I see the difference. I thought it would be too small with two inches into the pony tail. But it was perfect. Longer shag! Exactly right for me I think!? it is getting hard to afford getting hair done anymore! TY TY!!!
I believe you should do a ponytail version then a solan version just to show the difference between the two. Would give us a better idea of what we are looking for. Great job!
Will a longer version of this work? I have very long hair down to my lower back. It's also fine and pin straight (but extremely thick, so I need weight taken out!). Could shaggy layers work for my hair type?
Hi! Not a hairstylist here, but I binge watch haircuts videos. The Shaggy cut needs volume to look good. You can see back in the 70s it was about natural waves. If you have very straight hair you'll need curling tools to create waves. Otherwise it will look just like normal layers. Also, I've seen that women with straight fine hair go for shorter layers, a more edgy look. Hope it helps!
This gave me the most beautiful haircut I’ve ever gotten. I’ve been cutting my own hair since middle school so I had some confidence to do it & I have no regrets. I just had to give it a few retouches around my face frame to blend but other than that, this was by far the easiest haircuts I’ve done as well. If you’re looking for a sign, this is it!

-- EDIT-- Word of advice, don't bring the side ponytails to the front to cut - hold them up & out like in the video! (Re: cutting more off/other half - my shoulder was sore so took the easy way out & now have two very blunt cut pieces on the sides, oops. Fixable, but atm, looks pretty stupid :P )
Can I ask how you fixed it? I just did the same thing😅
Thank you so much for replying! I am going to use your tips going forward. Hopefully in a few weeks we both look a bit better lol
@@AD-lk4wu Good luck to you! :) Chopping your own hair can sometimes be an interesting journey lol.
Same! I'm so bummed. I'm not daring to do any more myself. Going to salon tomorrow to see if they can morph it into a Rachel. Wish me luck 🍀🤞
I tried this. It turned out amazing.
Love this cut. Takes the guess work out of it. What’s more it really suits me.
Just did the wolf-cut today. Will be doing this tomorrow
How did it go? I too did the wolf cut first, now doing this, so I need a little idea whether I should go ahead or let my hair grow and then cut it.
Iv been doing hair for year's and I love your techniques any time saved in a cut and to still turn out a good cut is a win win for me thanks
Hace unos días me hice el corte Kitty que subiste hace poco y hoy vine por este, estaba alaciado así que mañana veré cómo me quedó, muchas gracias por el tutorial 😍😍😍
This is a fantastic tutorial. So glad I found you. 😊
I have a couple of suggestions to help your viewers see what you do better.
Did this one hour ago came out amazing I love it😭😍😍😁!!!!!!!
I can never get my hairdresser to give me this type of shag with shorter layers on the crown and I always have to alter it. I will try this - you are a genius Paul - thank you for sharing your brilliant technique.
No domino mucho el inglés pero seguí todos tus pasos y me quedo super bien, muchas gracias y saludos desde México 🇲🇽🤠
Well...I decided to do my own Shaggy. If it goes wrong, I'll wear a ponytail until it grows. Thanks for the video!
Everyone loves this haircut, so I'm tempted to try...the issue I can't figure out is how short to cut the sides IN RELATION to the top...Like if the sides are 2-3 inches out from the ponytail holder, does that mean the top, too, should be cut the exact same amount?
@PaulWattsHair ... eh?
I wish my hair was long enough to have my hair cut like this. I love it and it seems so simple to do.
Don't have the link, but there's a tutorial somewhere on You Tube for doing a short shag cut
I did this exact thing with my very short hair and it looks absolutely adorable, highly recommend
I’m an old hairdresser here. The shag was my very first haircut. And now I’m going to go do it again. We used to call over direction “traveling” Looks like there’s pretty much very little chance of messing this up. Very cute. On my way.
How did it turn out?
Yes how did it turn out?
Do you have a video about making the back short wispy cut?
Waow 🤩🤩🤩 stunning results for a haircut in just 3 steps, love it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Left is round above the ears, right is flat. Everybody sees you did it yourself
@@johnroekoek12345 omg no.
I also can't get good layers from anyone. I swear hair school stopped teaching layers .
Te quedo muy bonito❤, gracias por compartir tus conocimientos.
this would be fun to do with a flowbee. there are few examples of how to get a flowbee to do anything interesting. ponytails could change that.
This turned out great on my shoulder length hair. I had a bit of a "step" but I went back and recut a bigger top section and it blended better. So quick as well. Thank you!!!
As in the triangle part is bigger. I'm afraid of a step as well would love a reply thanks
@@belz9695 yes the triangle section
Loved the intro! You looked like you had ponytails lol
😂😂
If you’re wondering if you can do this, you can. I have absolutely no experience in hair but I was sick of it being heavy. My mom helped me the first time, & I’ve cut it by myself 3xs since. You have to take your time & make sure you get the parts right. And don’t cut straight. Just cut V’s into your hair (point cut) and that will make it shag & not jagged 😂 IVE NEVER IN MY LIFE HAD THIS MANY COMPLIMENTS ON MY HAIR!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Paul...sure do appreciate your sharing of the instructions for cutting this shag cut.
Thank you Marlene. Glad you enjoyed it.
Would this worked with 2 pony tails on the side
Excellent example of fast condensed cutting! If we showed up at a salon, and they cut our hair like this,we'd think they weren't "professional",even if it turned out great! If it can deliver this fantastic of a look, why not?
This is so beautiful. Can’t wait to try. ❤
No hair dresser can do the cut i want and it’s exactly this.. omg
Sweet I'm gonna style mine like that. Have never seen a shag so nice 😀
Absolutley love this. Great tutorial. I have noticed though, that in your videos, it is much easier to see the details of the cut on lighter colored hair. Just a wee suggestion 😉 Thank you for all you do. 💜
This is a game changer! Thank you, Paul!!!
So, this removes bulk from the corners of the cut instead of the edges?
Thank you for your video.Does it look good on curly hair?
All I can say is WOW!!!! I SO LOVE THIS CUT!!!! XO 💖😘
Waoooo this haircut looks very good ,sir you guide us in very easy way
I've cut my hair with just the ponytail on top since 1967, then just trim bangs and sides.💕
How do you do the front section so it has a side part rather than a middle part?
TY TY!!!
Thank you Paul. Can you do a shag haircut with bangs please.
Love it !!! My hair is past my butt thick & curly & I want this cut but not this short so what do I do ?
I love it.. thaks for sharing.. is it right to do ponytails on clients?
I wanna try this haircut but i dont have salon kind of scissors. What scissor you recommend is best to use??
What if I want to keep my long length but still have lots of layers?
OKAY!!! I'm doing it. Right now. Wish me luck!
Hi from kuwait 🇰🇼
OMG I love it, going to try it on my hair!!!
Thanks to you, now I can cut my own hair!!
I believe you should do a ponytail version then a solan version just to show the difference between the two. Would give us a better idea of what we are looking for.
Great job!
спасибо вам за ваши видео. они помогают мне самой стричься так как я хочу нежели идти к парикмахеру и гадать сделает ли он то что я просила или нет
Thanks i have been lookining for this for so long...Im in quarantine... I have a strong compulsive need to diy cut and color my hair
I'd just do the front maybe.
Oh wow this is fantastic hair cut so pleased that you shared this it feels so good and looks good when finished 👍
I'm just looking to add more layers to my already shaggy ish cut lol ty
Paul for sparse hair or thin hair can cut shag??
Is this cut also good for medium length curly hair?
You might want to check out Manes by Mel youtube channel. She does this cut for curly hair.
