Kilauea Eruption Update: Lava Lake Dome Fountain Emerges (Jan. 5, 2021)

  • While no major changes in the summit eruption have been observed, scientists have been documenting the evolution of the active west vent, which continues to feed lava flows into the lake below.
    This video contains information on the new dome fountain at the surface of the lava lake, as well how the lake is becoming "perched" in the caldera.
    A synthesized voice was utilized in the narration for this story. Video and photos are from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

    Its fascinating awesome natural power but the dynamics of the flowing lava are hardly surprising.
    Its a liquid being forced from below the surface with more force that the surface tension can support...hence it blows over just like filling a bath of water from below.
    The edges of the lava lake are very much cooler because they are in contact with the the colder older caldera walls...they will absorb much heat...and so the edges of the liquid mass will obviously be cooler.
    An awesome video to watch whilst "millions of years" 😉😉 of rock formations are made and destroyed in a few hours..and made again a few hours later.

    This could be a very bad situation. Imagine living in a place like that on an island were over 60 % of your economy is funded by fishing . now realise what effects this is going to have on the surrounding areas were the fishing would normally take place . just the water temp change alone you think would be enough to make all the fish leave . I don't know for sure I'm no scientist or geologist but shouldn't this be getting more exposure to help protect and conserve this place and its people well being and way of life . maybe I'm over thinking it or worrying too much . I know you can't stop an active volcano from erupting but a TH-cam video shouldn't be the only and first way to hear about it . this situation needs more exposure and coverage

    • @jukahri
      @jukahri 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lady2550 So first of all, please don't rely just on TH-cam's comment section for the education of your son! But as for "does it multiply", I assume your son means where does magma come from, how is it created. What you are looking for is what is called the rock or lava cycle, there should be plenty of nice infographics describing it if you look for it.
      The (very) short of it is that magma is simply molten rock coming from far beneath the surface, from the mantle, where the pressure is high enough to melt rock (pressure = heat). The molten rock below, being more buoyant than the colder rock above, rises to the surface, where it cools down. The 'void' it leaves behind is filled by the colder, denser rock it displaced to get to the surface, so that colder rock will in turn heat up because of the higher pressure, turn into magma again and the cycle starts anew.

    • @jukahri
      @jukahri 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More magma, or the chambers and tubes collapse. Keep in mind too that although rock seems pretty solid to us, on a geological scale it is a lot more viscous than you would think, so as magma rises up, rock flows down to fill the gaps, eventually deep enough that it turns into magma again.
