Jason was without a doubt one of the most technically proficient guitar players of all time, and he proved that when he was only 19/20. If it wasn't for ALS causing him to stop playing and getting better, he probably would've been the absolute best.

Oh yeah definitely. Even at the age of 20 I feel he was better than Malmsteen or EVH, and if he was still able to play, he would definitely take the throne as the greatest of all time. I still consider him up in the top 5 though. That’s just me though man.

Watching this gets me choked up sometimes. Marty and Jason have always been my favorite guitarists of all time. Many times when I catch myself complaining and bitching about my music career or achievements not working out or if I get upset I don't have time to practice etc.. you know the stuff I'm sure all serious musicians who devote there life to the Instrument feel at times. Discouraged at points by things not working out etc... I always think of Jason and what happened to him. Being on top of the world barely out of his teens being one of the greatest guitarists in the world during one of the most competitive and talent filled era of guitar in history. Basically taking over Steve Vais role with Roth. Playing with the same singer Van Halen (one of jason's childhood heros) came to fame with. How much a dream come true getting that gig with Roth had to be for Jason. Recording a new album and a tour with David Lee Roth at the peak of his career. Jason had arrived after so much hard work and dedication. But then for Jason too lose all of that during one of the greatest moments in his life... no longer being able to even play guitar soon after recording with DLR... And having to also watch your best friend become one of the most legendary guitarists of all time in Megadeth soon after. All while even playing your guitar anymore is no longer possible.... I can't imagine what Jason went through and felt...When I think about that it completely breaks my heart. It's possibly the saddest story of any artist in world history you'll ever hear... But Jason didn't give up and by some miracle found ways to adapt and continue to write music even inventing a language later so he could continue to speak to others. Another thing we all take for granted Jason had to seriously devote himself for years just to maintain. The sheer effort Jason had to put in to do things we all take for granted everyday is mind boggling. Not only that but Jason was given just a few years to live with arguably the worst and most unpleasant disease out there ALS. But Jason's will to live became so strong he's still around almost 30 years later which is absolutely incredible. He's somehow Still active, still writing music, still making the absolute most of a tough situation and instead being bummed out about it... He's making great things happen for himself. In interviews he's always seems so grateful for the things he does have and not bitter over his situation. Everytime I hear myself getting discouraged and negative about music I rewatch Jason's movie and documentary again to remind myself of the massive amounts of blessings I have/we all have and take for granted each and everyday... And just how fortunate I am in life. So I should be feeling the exact opposite. Many times I write the best music of my life after re-watching Jason's story. It's hard to find any artists in history with a more inspiring and moving story than Jason Beckers. The example he set during some of the most tough breaks and events anybody could ever go through has truely impacted me personally on such a deep level. To the point Ive become so grateful to be able to play everyday and enjoy music all most of my negative thoughts about music or life in general disapear. Jason's story always reminds me of just how lucky I am... Hell how lucky we all are to get able to enjoy playing music. I'm sure Jason would give anything to pick up his guitar again and play yet myself and I'm sure many other bitch about being too tired to practice etc etc...After many times of re-watching Jason's story over many years it's completely turned around my whole outlook on music and life for the better. So sorry Jason had all that happen to him it's absolutely heartbreaking. Trying to imagine what it must feel like to be him through all of that brings me to tears. But I'm sure I'm not the only musician who Jason's story and the example he set in the worst of situations profoundly effected there own lives and caused them to change for the better. I would guess I'm far from the only musician to have such a huge response to Jason's music and story. I wonder if Jason realizes how many people he never met admire him. How many people he never met improved themselves and there lives from the example he set going through the toughest of times.

Marty has always been about making beautiful music and trying his best to get what he feels. The difference between variety and flashy moves, is that Marty has shown a bit more versatility than Jason has on this particular video.

Sure, I wonder about electric guitar but then I see things like this and figure perhaps I’m still in over my head on a 4 string bass so maybe it won’t be for me.
Because players this good make it to where you can’t even understand what they’ve done but you can glean enough to know it’s special upon just hearing some of it.

In terms of technique, Jason won, but I agree with you. Marty won for me too, his lick from 0:32 to 0:44 was basically a sign that he didn't care about playing fast any longer. Jason's facial expression afterwards definitely suggests that he thought something like "How am I gonna top his melodic sense? Oh, yeah right, I'll just do these awesome arpeggios at light speed". Oh well, the real winners are us, the listeners, anyway :P.

Most of us don't hit our prime as guitarists until our late 20s to mid 30s. Some continue to get better, some stagnate and others will even get worse due to complacency/comfort. Jason was SO young when his health went on a fast downward spiral. There's no doubt in my mind that his physical prowess would have gotten much better but probably more importantly he would've matured musically.

pd vasyan hirojoshi scale, it wasn’t invented in Tornado of Souls. Marty uses it a lot in his past and current stuff

@ViniciusMPepino His father made him practise even when he was 5 and 6. And he loved his guitar, and probably had a lot of talent.

I remember Jason saying that he lost a lot of the guitar battles between him and Marty.
So yeah, this might be one of those few times Jason won.
