The 4020 was notorious for leaking oil at the back right corner of the head gasket. You have nothing to lose by using extra sealer. I used a permitex product around the back corner. 500 hours later, no leaking. I believe I read that those head bolts should be retorqueed every 600 hours. How often does anyone want to bet that's ever happened.

One thing about a 4020 they been around long enough and used enough that any problems they could have has been had and every farmer has worked on them. So really long as you can still get parts you can fix them

I just finished mine for the 2nd time and hopefully the last. Head gasket didn’t seal good on first. Used the same copper spray as you have. It’s sealed for good now I hope.

Enjoy your videos and knowledge you do great work! I’m doing my first “complete” restore on my 4020. Where do you prefer to buy aftermarket parts? Do you have one particular place or do you shop all over depending on what you need and price. I don’t have much for engine/transmission work, as it doesn’t have many hrs. Mainly cosmetic and some hoses, gaskets, exhaust manifold etc. I was going to see if I can find a local mobile sandblasting place to come to farm and then I’d paint it. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks

I prefer oem parts but if price is ridiculous I go with shoup mfg or all state ag parts in the aftermarket world. I hired a mobile dust less blaster on this project. Thanks for the comment and message anytime I'm glad to help

A bad machine shop or a bad fuel system guy can sure play hell in a new engine rebuild. Been down that road

Yeah it sucks when you spend a ton of money and get crap quality in return

I've never done hot re torques on a head. Not against the idea. I usually spray copper coat on diesel, and any forced induction engines. Diesel's I'll torque them down, and follow up 12+ hours later, and one follow up after a heat cycle. I've never had a leak. Is it the copper coat? Is it my toque procedure? None of us will ever know. Plenty of shops don't do any of that and don't have problems either.
Does sound like it has a skip to it... Fuel issue now. That can be somebody else's problem.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah I'm done dumping money in it. The little bark is what it is at this point.

You have to wonder what the engineers at jd were smoking when they decided to hang the hydraulic remote valves out over the engine, real convenient for working on the engine
