The scariest part of old versions of Minecraft was definitely when Herobrine appeared and had hyper realistic eyes and cried blood
Well second scariest anyway, the scariest was when my buddy Nathaniel stole my diamonds to make boots and then left the world when I tried to kill him for them

Many years ago when I first discovered how to make texture packs, I replaced one of the cave noises with a distant echoing scream because I wanted to make the game "scarier."
I heard the scream a single time in-game while mining in the dark and immeditaly deleted the sound effect from the pack lol

I think it's less that old minecraft is actually scary or unsettling, and more that it has this distinct sublime atmosphere (contributed to by the sounds, textures, world generation, the game being structured more like a sandbox, etc.) which lends itself to things like Herobrine more than modern minecraft does

    • @plows2940
      @plows2940 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I think it’s the fact that the world is truly empty in old versions (especially in single player) - no NPCs, no pre-generated structures aside from dungeons. The atmosphere is unique and has a lonely vibe while also weirdly feeling like you’re being watched.

Honestly, the problem with the dweller mods is not even the original Cave Dweller(he's actually the best mod out of all of them)
It's the fact that all but the Cave Dweller serve no purpose other than cheap scares, the Cave Dweller adds a new layer to the game, he is not always guaranteed to be in your caves, he keeps you guessing, all those others? They shove themselves in your face immediately.

    • @ZyrTheMachineGodOfWar

Problem is simplicity, all the horror mods are very *overt* about what they do. You see the big scary mans in the distance and all of a sudden hes chasing you
Yeah, it works as a scare but after the 3rd time its just annoying that he keeps fuckin killing you.
      Its predictable.
A good aspect of horror is the unknown, not knowing what the fuck this thing is, how it does things, what it wants and what are its limitations. Horror needs to be unpredictable, in the early Amnesia games, the sanity mechanic ensured you werent able to look at the monster for long. All you knew was that it was big, deformed, vaguely human, and could break open doors to get to you. You didnt know what you were facing. "Dont let them see the monster" From The Fog does that a little better but thats because you cant look directly at herobrine without him disappearing, as well as the minor shit he does like get rid of your torches or light your shit on fire, you dont expect that from a shitty horror mod.
The problem with trying to make minecraft spooky is not even in the artstyle, blocky shit *can* work, just dont rely on models for your spooks, cuz its still blocky spooky men with big teeth and sunken eyes.
Hard part is simply how complicated and modular minecraft is
You want something to watch the player from their window while they are in their base
Ok. To accomplish that you need to ensure 1, the player has ground floor windows. 2, the player didnt light up the surrounding area, because then it looks kinda dumb. 3, what IS a window, anyway? Are 2 blocks of glass a window? What about fences, trapdoors, or just slab and stairway windows. How does it differentiate between villager houses and playrr's base
What if thr player has a super mansion and will never fucking notice it.
Mods need to be creative, fuck with the player just enough where its not obvious, but also make them doubt their preconceptions about horror mods
What if your chest opens by itself, or you hear a block break next to you or a door open. What if for 1 day, the sun just doesnt rise, no stars, no moon, just a black sky and darkness. What if for a day, all mobs stare dead at you, always all eyes on you, your whole farm will stare. What if your fucking items movr around in the chests they were put in or something minor goes missing
What if you find an item from your fucking base, in a loot chest or a treasure. What if you randomly hear walking noises, or just minor shit like whispers or cave sounds.
Ramp it up more, like your whole house moving, or being flipped upside down, or whole forests having their leafs cut, or fuckin ANYTHING THAT ISNT A BIT SCARY MAN CHASING YOU WHILE EARRAPE SCREAMING BLASTS YOUR SPEAKERS
      Sorry for long comment.

@@Gianni_7922 that sounds like it works, specifically because of the AI being designed to stalk you, and the player being AWARE of him, also adds the tension of having to juggle where he is, so that you can avoid looking at him. Something like The One Who Watches (generic as shit name) just fuckin spawns randomly and ganks you
Theres no system, theres no gameplay, theres no strategy in avoiding him. You are the syssiphean player, finding solice in that your spook is predetermined, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. So there is no tension, because you never even had a chance.

I think that Minecraft can very much be scary even today. But only under the caveat that you WANT it to be scary. The vibe of being deep underground, and hearing a cave ambience sound you’ve never heard before, or rarely ever hear, at a moment where you’re idly thinking about what could be around the corner. Get yourself in the right headspace, and the potential is far scarier than the reality.
My most recent experience was strip mining diamonds in the deepest layer, when a particular piece of cave ambience plays. And then it plays again a couple minutes later. And then again. I don’t know how, I don’t know why, but this particular cave ambience noise kept playing near repeatedly at brief intervals, only occasionally being broken by silence or a different cave ambience sound. It was incredibly bizarre. And left me stricken with an inexplicable fear that something was wrong. Yeah, I know I’m freaked out at literally a coincidental rng thing, but in the moment, it was unnerving, mystifying. And I like that the potential is there. Even if the reality is that the greatest threat I faced in the moment was just a routine mob.

Aside from intentionally scary things in Minecraft like cave noises and the Endermen, I feel like what a lot of people find scary about this game is really just them projecting their own fears of loneliness and isolation onto the game. I've heard a lot of people on TH-cam say it's scary how empty and quiet the world is (which I also didn't start hearing people say until only a couple years ago), even some people saying that it makes Minecraft a horror game and it was intrinsically designed to be unsettling, but those aspects have always felt peaceful and tranquil to me. I can't help but feel that if you think Minecraft is scary because of how nothing is going on, it's not because nothing is "inherently scary", it's because _you're_ scared of nothing. None of my friends who play Minecraft have ever said they were scared of Minecraft for those reasons, and I didn't start hearing people say these things until like 2021ish, so I feel like it's just a vocal minority getting attention, hearing each other, and using that as validation. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it seems to me. Same thing with Super Mario 64. I've never been scared by that game, even from playing at a very early age, and never known anyone personally who is or was scared by it either, and I still hear people hyper analyze the negative emotional aura of that game's areas and talk about how unsettling it is.
TLDR: Minecraft isn't necessarily an intrinsically scary game just because some people find it scary.
EDIT: Apparently people finding Minecraft scary and empty has been around for a while, I just somehow missed it. I still think my point stands though.

The the "minecraft is scary because it's empty" isn't actually new.
I felt that way, back in 2016. Because when I would play i did feel completely alone sometimes, especially in caves or riding a boat for awhile.

as someone who's been playing minecraft since close to the beginning, the whole minecraft being scary because it's empty has been a thing for as long as the game has. I mean, the whole Herobrine myth/creepypasta/whatever you want to call it is kinda entirely based off of that principle. I won't say the game is "inherently scary" because that's just not a concept that actually exists in any meaningful way, all people are scared of different things after all. What I will say, is that I remember playing minecraft all alone into the early hours of the morning, and feeling creeped out whenever I thought I saw something moving just barely out of sight, or heard a noise that sounded strange. But I was also a kid that was very easily scared.

Last time I vividly remember being unsettled in Minecraft was on the 360 edition in my cousins large unfinished basement. I was sitting on a huge beanbag chair in one of the tutorial worlds in a building of spruce or dark oak on a river. I remember looking out the window at an enderman then accidently breaking it and looking at the enderman I think I just closed the game and went upstairs. I was so spooked. I also vividly remember having nightmares because of the music for some reason. Now I absolutely love the music and I can't believe I would always turn off the music for a long time after that happened. Though I did eventually fall in love with the music cause I didn't turn it off one time and realized the mistake I had made.

Imo, it was "scary" because we knew nothing about the game at the time, so it intensified the fear of the unknown and would make us paranoid of things that weren't even there.
It was never about dogshit loud chaser mobs like the minecraft content farms seem to love, it was about being stranded in an unknown world where you knew nothing of how things worked, so you were more cautious and more paranoid in general of what could happen, the game also was WAY harder on the health side because you could only heal from eating and food didn't stack, it made moments where you were low on health and without food way more intense ( and more fun in my opinion).
One of my cherished Minecraft memories during the beta was me being terrified inside my own house because i heard cave sounds and thought something was out to get me, especially since i kept hearing footsteps outside (which were most likely an animal). I was terrified and paranoid about something that wasn't even there BECAUSE i heard a weird sound in a game i didn't know anything about, and it was amazing.
EDIT: Yeah it seems to came to same conclusion during the vid, i was only at the start of the vid and commented purely from the title alone.

Honestly the last time Minecraft genuinely spooked me was with the MCSX pack. It was a jumpscare I did not expect since it popped up right after creating a new world, and it was from just a few particles in the sand. Pretty sure it was from one of the dweller mods.

the last time minecraft genuinely spooked me was when I was playing with lycanites mobs for the first time, i tried to mine an ore but I guess that that ore had already been touched by killer queen or some shit and two fuckers spawned.
This was the second time that happened. The third time was when I realized that the mod wasn't fun to play. All 3 times, I died to them because I couldn't run away, and they outdamaged me because I had just started the game.
I kept the mod on because I liked some of the building blocks, but I disabled every single mob, since I don't want to have to re-configure the game every single time I encounter a similar nuisance, which there were bound to be, since I had also just had an encounter with a wall-clipping banshee in the "safety" of my base on the exact same night that all 3 of these happened. I don't want to put more effort into balancing the game than the developers didn't.

And if you want to make caving a bit more unsettling, I recommend audio mods like Ambient Sounds, Sound Physics Remastered, and Presence Footsteps (though these are amazing to spice up Minecraft regardless of whether you're going for horror or not).

Old Minecraft just has that certain.. feel to it. While i never played it myself, i started with the PS3 Version which was when it was "released" basically, with the Enderdragon and whatnot, i always loved watching videos on Minecrafts early stages. And just.. everything about it always was so.. eerie, creepy, uncanny. The absolute loneliness, the lighting and the intense darkness in caves, the sound effects even, it all was weirdly terrifying. And, since i was a child, of course i believed in the whole Herobrine nonsense so that also kinda fueled my fear of early MC.

Going into the game "expecting" to find scary things is a strange approach. In fact, I don't think anyone could really go with the intention of investigating scariness in Minecraft and return with satisfying results. Not that I personally agree that old Minecraft was ever scary, but I get what people are saying who speak of their own memories of it. How some would find it unsettling, mindlessly playing it deep into the night with no one else around but the empty world they were exploring, shrouded in fog. Just the feeling of being alone, in a game that wasn't nearly as well explored as it is nowadays.

After taking a pretty long break from Minecraft (and only really watching a few people still playing it) I eventually returned with a brand new world to look at it with fresh eyes. And... it was kind of nervewracking! I spawned into a world that seemed, at the time, to be just ice and snow with the occasionally speck of land dotted with spruce trees. No signs of life anywhere apart from a singular dog I found about two days in, and the masses of polar bears that started to spawn out on the open ice fields with me (and promptly decided to take my breathing personally and try to kill me).
Walking out over those ice sheets with nothing but my dog was weirdly harrowing. I wouldn't call it SCARY in the traditional sense of heart racing fear but it sure did invoke something a lot like... dread. Which when you're an adult living a relatively cushy life playing video games is as close as a lot of us can GET to the base emotion of fear outside of being actively hunted by something or facing a terrible life tragedy and the uncertainty that inevitably follows.
I think that's the thing about Minecraft is that people attribute that dread to the game being SCARY. But most of the time when people think "scary" their mind goes to, and not for no reason, the sensation of heart-pounding fear. And there are times where Minecraft has made people feel that no doubt! I still get jumpscared by Creepers and with the advent and unveiling of The Deep Dark (and its heinously cool associated mob, The Warden) there is a NEW sense of unease and anxiety that surrounds the world of Minecraft.
Its a great game whose horror has always kind of been connected to the players allowance to ascribe meaning to things, to let themselves be submerged in the world. When you let yourself step into the fantasy, THAT is when you start to FEEL. Be it fear, wonder, or any other number of emotions! Its been awesome watching you play Minecraft and talk (calmly and plainly thank goodness) about its intersection with the genre of horror. Now if only TH-cam would stop filling my rec feed with nonsense just because of that fact!
Hope this wall of text made sense! ^_^

I was standing on top of it and couldn’t really see much because of the fog and then heard a cave noise; eventho I knew herobrine wasn’t real I was scared for my life and left immediately and never came back for a good 10 years after that. I started a new world again one and a half years ago but I still had this moment in my mind when playing and it still felt very eerie. I was maybe 13 at that time

I am easily scared of video game horror even in my twenties lol, I tried the cave dweller when it first came out and it ended up giving me a legitimate panic attack and a fear of caves even in vanilla for at least a week after

Tbh vanilla minecraft isn't scary for me anymore in the way people are trying to make it scary. As somebody who played single player on pocket edition since the pocket edition came out, I was scared when I was young and had no clue how to play the game. But now? I get a different type of scared feeling, the fear of how time has passed and the fear that things can never be the same as they were. Everything about minecraft feels the same yet different and the more I play, the more I feel like that sense of creativity and wonder I once had is gone. Although that's kinda just my lingering feeling about it. Minecraft, as much as people try to make it scary, will always be a comfort game to me instead of a spooky game, even with horror mods installed. I have kinda been desensitized to most horror anyways because that's just the stuff I was into when I was 5-13 or so, but Minecraft has always had a sense of comfort for me, a place I could escape to when I didn't want to be in reality. Creative was fun but it was survival that had more of this comforting feeling, mainly because it was what I played more. And as much as I get the feeling the wonder is gone, I know it's not gone. That feeling I get from booting up a basic vanilla survival minecraft world is a feeling of creativity and ideas, wondering what goals I can achieve. Ik this rant is very incoherent and messy and that it's kinda just my endless stream of thoughts about the game in this comment section.
But to put it short: Minecraft is scary in a different way to me but it's more of a childhood comfort and escape rather than a spooky game. No amount of mods could change what Minecraft is to me at heart.
(Ik there's gonna be a LOT of "I ain't readin' allat" jokes Lol)
EDIT: I was half way through the video when I typed this, but the getting side tracked and building a house thing is something I do all the time in minecraft LOL

I feel like it's comforting in survival because you actually had company such as with mobs, so there were other stuff that you had to watch out for but they were still there. In Creative there was nothing, I don't think it was scary but actually unnerving

ive been playing a lot of beta 1.7.3 like a LOT and every single time i stop playing because i get a bit uneasy
the game is just a bit eerie
i cant even explain it really
i dont get that uneasy playing modern minecraft
but ever since i started playing ive had times when something would freak me out so much as a kid i had long periods of just not playing the game and maybe that just sorta stayed
its so peaceful until its not i guess
what gives me the most unease is that when you go to bed sometimes you wont sleep and a monster will pop up and start attacking THAT makes me feel weird
every time i go to sleep in game i get a bit anxious thatll happen
i think the reason people still feel that minecraft is creepy is mostly just them thinking it is when they were younger
but its also the emptiness and quirks minecraft has
its also i think because yknow herobrine and all the args or minecraft spooky stuff is mostly related to not being alone in a game where youre supposed to be and i guess that also may freak some people out
    and the damn cave noises
could also just be that many people feel that minecraft especially old minecraft is a bit uncanny

I used to be incredibly cheap on resources. No armor, stone tools, maybe a diamond sword if I felt like it. Caving was a horrifying time every time.
Though, I played around the time when bedrock fog still existed and the end was a thing. Before end cities and withers. Before quartz and when slimes didnt spawn in swamps. Ye Olde but not as old as this video Minecraft.

Last time i got scared of Minecraft was when i was pretty young
I had gotten some pirated minecraft launcher and it had some kind of login that turned you into whoever you wanted so i put in "notch", made a new world and had the skin n everything, got a bunch of signs, flew around and said *very mean* things to Herobrine i think i hurt his feelings or smth
prob called him "a shit" considering how trash my humor was back then
At one point i remember i was on top of a tree and when i finished placing down the sign there, Herobrine had appeared infront of me and crashed my game
I dunno if i had some mod installed or not (Likely did) but i did not remember modding it since it was a new install
I even sent emails to mojang but like y'know, automated replies and such (All of which had shitty grammar, i'm Brazilian)
It was pretty scary and i could not play normally for many days, i remember i only played on superflat worlds after that for weeks with like that clay dolls mod
Overall thats the last time i was genuinely scared of Minecraft and the last time i was "unsettled" (more like weirded out) was when i found a 2x1 hole in the floor going all the way down to bedrock (idk what happened there) probably a mod that messed with the terrain?
    Anyways fella thats my story

My first time playing and getting scared in Minecraft was when I got scared by the cave noise and I almost quit but then I made a house and found a pet chicken, but he got out then I lost him and it made me so mad I quit. I've played on and off through the years cause it's pretty boring to me

Warning: This comment is a yap session
The last time I got scared by minecraft was a lightly modded survival playthrough I did recently. But what scared me wasn't a mod it was the Deep Dark. I don't play or watch a lot of minecraft so seeing a completely brand new to me "biome" in a cave while mining was intriguing. But as soon as I saw the things in there react to the sounds I made, I knew I was screwed. And having the warden spawn on me for the first time after trying to sneak around had me genuinely terrified. I figured out how it worked after a while and it lost that effect on me, but I will never forget stepping into the Deep Dark for the first time.

"I made a house for some reason, idk why I did this" it's minecraft, why would you not build a house?! Even moreso in beta where houses are actually a requirement to survive on the surface. I kept asking myself when you'd finally start building and you skipped all of it!

    • @Friend_A
      @Friend_A  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I wasn’t planning on making a house initially because I thought it would take like an hour and a half for me to get to the nether. I kept getting distracted by various things while building the house so I ended up just stopping the recording temporarily as I simply had nothing to say

i think the sense of wonder & imagination & lack of understanding, fundamentally the "fear of the unknown" was so crucial to minecraft EVER being scary. when you're a kid you don't particularly think about the fact that a game is being developed by a person, they're more like these kind of arcane secret worlds, and you have no idea how they were made. you don't know anything about what's going on in the coding and behind the scenes. your mind can so easily go wild with possibilities back then because you also don't know what a game is fundamentally CAPABLE of. you think something like herobrine COULD be real, and especially with the environment of the internet at the time with its fixation on creepypasta, you've got a lot of mind fodder to spook the hell out of yourself.
(edit: and it's an inherently quite vulnerable game setup because it's (broadly) first person and very quiet, plus the fog limiting lines of sight. and the fact that it's such a dreamy kind of game with a weirdly somber atmosphere at times that REALLY sucks you in for hours on end.)
so like, especially when you're playing alone, and ur just with your thoughts and there's so much you don't know, of COURSE a typical response would be a build up of apprehension and fear. I don't find minecraft scary at all, in any version, and i played early beta when i was a kid. that was the only time i was ever scared. as soon as i found out about things like the minecraft wiki, and as they started adding things to the game that made it easier to learn and traverse (e.g. crafting recipes being so accessible in-game) the fear factor totally disappeared. you know how the game works now, you know its logic, you know every item, biome, mob. you know how to cheese any fight, you know how to beat it. you can't be scared of something you know so thoroughly
love the video, it gave me a lot of food for thought haha.

you are playing old minecraft but it does not make that much sense if you keep the render distance to anything else than "tiny", also you play it with too much fps and no lag spikes. i tried minecraft 1.0.0 release on a Pentium 4, sure is is still not that scary but look at this, the render distance is maybe 2 chunks and it is night so you have darkness all around you because of render distance also 20 fps and lag spikes and you have made your house near a river, then you open inventory and then you hear footsteps running behind you then jumping into the water, you turn around and there is nothing there. Probably just a bug that made the running noise and also if you stay near water it randomly makes "water" sounds once in a while
