Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

The title and the quick early statement had me confused. Thanks for the later explanation of both why they're hunting squirrels and that squirrels fight back while rabbits don't. Learning is fun. :)
Just amazing to see the red tail hawk elevate to a higher altitude using its wings with the air that he uses to rise or decent . Amazing and beautiful
Excellent Martin. Might I offer some camera advice? Get a good muff for your mic hole and glue it over the top of it completely sealed all around but don't get glue in the hole(s). These muffs are also known as "dead cats". No more wind noise! Keep up the good work!

You could literally feel the joy of his flying after being freed. Like he could not believe it and just wanted to keep flying. Gosh, the mountains look amazing. Like a painting!

Did you know that a red tail hawk is actually part of the vulture family? I didn't believe it but the latin genus says otherwise.
I wouldn't have minded to see him circle until he took off in whatever direction he was going to go. I've watched a lot of less satisfying videos on YT.

Such a thrill to see that beauty. Loved how he/she went immediately to the highest point on the tree. We have lots of Red-shouldered and Cooper’s Hawks. And I love them but seeing a big Redtail is a treat. What a beautiful spot. Thanks for letting us tag along. And sorry about those trees. Ugh.

I have three red tail hawks living next to my house. They hang out on a electric pole from the oldest to the youngest. They really look cool just being and doing their thing in the great out doors.

We have a lot of Red Tailed Hawks here in North Georgia. We had some sort of large hawk or two that kept getting stuck somehow in our screened in porch and I had to pick it up and put it back out. They are huge but weigh almost nothing. Amazing and beautiful creatures. Yours couldn't wait to feel the wind in his feathers again.
For their size, they are surprisingly light
they weigh on avg about two lbs

There is no other way to perceive this flight of fancy as anything but a true ‘thank you’ for helping him. Most animals, held captive against their will (even if it’s to help them) will flee the scene immediately one freed. This little guy knew you saved his life-and is giving you a present.
Captivity is very stressful, they just want to get back to the wild where they belong.
He was flying over your head to tell you how thankful it was that you helped it to get better 😁

I got to hold one once at the Bird Rescue Center in Santa Rosa! It was 1 of the only 2 times in my life that I almost burst into tears. The Divine was apparent!

Being a wildlife rehab specialist must be hard but rewarding work. Just seeing that hawk catching the thermals was exhilarating for me hundreds of miles back East, inside my home, watching this on a tiny cellphone screen. I like to pretend I’m a falconer when I handle my “big, bad” conure/parakeet. She’s a bitey, squacky baby, but birdie momma is the boss. LOLs. I can’t imagine how many times this falconer has been bit and scratched by these massive, powerful animals to get his skills. Wow. Such confidence, love and finesse handling this amazing hawk. Just wow. Hawk definitely appreciated the humans with that fly by.

One of my favorite songs is “The Eagle and the Hawk” by John Denver. This release reminds me of that song. I love to see these magnificent raptors soar. Thank you for all that you do for these magnificent creatures.

I know it should not be a surprise that Martin has bird feeders but they are still cute and nice to see: an effort to help smaller birds survive. Martin and Sue are always so willing to provide a nice, good meal to needy wildlife.

Where I live is dairy / corn farms and every year we get new hawks. Some years the stand of trees has produced as little as 3 young others I have counted 15 in the air at the same time. It almost looks like they hunt in packs. They will sit on the tree line or power poles and several will fly low over the fields and you get to see when they scare something up as the "driver birds" move on holding the scared preys attention another will come off the tree line and make a grab for it. Beautiful birds.
I fly rc multirotor and once in a while a juvenile will think its food and give chase for a short while. The fun part is when I fly at a local ball park the pigeons and other small birds will fly with me like I am the lead. Some will even do the loops and rolls and flips along with the quad. Its like play time for them.

Love those red tails, we often have them flying and hunting by our local freeways in So California, just sit right on light posts. The drought has really taken a toll on wildlife. Love how this guy is just enjoying his flight. Another great rescue! @Martin, just curious, is there a reason why you didn’t use a hood on this little guy for transport?
