After you just dragged and dropped the effect on the sends section, I felt so stupid. I used to do every step manually and it appears I simply ignored one of the basic foundations of Studio One, which is its incredible workflow. Thank you so much for posting these valuable videos, I learn something new each and every time!
Hey Joe, your videos on compression are some of the most helpful videos on the topic that I have seen. However, I've seen a lot of people use compression as an effect on synthesis and sound design instead of just a mix tool. Could you do a video on how to use compression as a tool in sound design. Thanks.
Super helpful .. in Logic this is called Selection-based processing and is one of the most useful tools in Logic both for "fixing" sections of a song or track that need help or adding effects to one note or one region .. I really like using this in my mixes in the bridge or the intro to a song. Thanks for all you do Joe - hey everyone - join HSC - become a VIPer .. find out what all the buzz is about!!
Joe this is fantastic! I use S1 Five artist and for the past 2 months I've been chopping up my tracks to add effects but I love that you've taught me a new method of it giving you an automation line to adjust to taste! This is a Brilliant Video brotha! Many thanks!! 😃👍
Yo Joe! Excellent videos Joe! You cover a lot of topics in the recording world & that's a real treat! Everything from basics to more complex topics, you do it all, almost. I think! Yikes, I'm being a real smart a?? here but to be honest I love your channel because your very thorough, fun to watch, & add a light-hearted way of delivering the message. For this, I'm on your list of subscribers. Thanks! All right let's get on with my dilemma. I have a topic where I can't find much info on & that's on layers. Yea LAYERS! It seems like I've walked into a Desert when it comes to layers & I thought wait? Maybe Joe knows! Yea! Joe knows everything! I do hope you can shed some light on this topic because I'm exhausted & thirsty for knowledge on this topic! I've been in the Desert too long. Here's the deal. #1 - I currently use a 32 channel Studiolive 32 series 3 mixer to provide a surface. #2 - I have a Studiolive 32R rackmount that I use as a stagebox. #3 - I have Universal Control to assist me in things such as naming, & selecting options, etc.. #4 - I will be buying a second Studiolive 32R rackmount for the other half of my studio soon! * I use the 32R to clean up the cable issue in the studio because things get pretty tight & messy in my 500 sq. foot basement area. The second 32R will assist me in hooking up my 2 Box digital drums (& expand the modules to include the Mimic Pro) which will also provide more inputs for musicians wanting to plug in their keyboards or guitar processors like the Helix, or Axe-Fx III Preamp. The first 32R is currently occupied with a Roland Integra 16 channel MIDI sound module, Roland FP8 piano, & a Hammond B3 organ for starters. OK, that should cover what I'm currently using in my studio. There's a whole bunch of other gear but that's for another time & another question video where I might need more help. On the Studiolive 32 mixer there are three different layers (I think) maybe there's more layers or maybe there's less. I'm not sure? I see a button called INPUTS, then below that USER then under the word BANK I see MAIN MIX. Initially, I used the layer called INPUTS then setup & labeled all 32 channels to record a Motown style band with 5 vocalists, 4 horn players, guitar, bass, 2 keyboard players, & did I mention a drummer. Whew, that's a lot of channels! Knowing what I know now, I think I mucked up Joe! I'd like to copy the INPUTS layer & paste it into the USER layer so I can free up the INPUTS for my own projects & set up the routing for recording my own virtual instruments. These VI's are accessed via MIDI internally on my PC DAW & I also access additional hardware instruments that are connected to the Studiolive 32R Stagebox. I've connected the Studiolive 32R Stagebox via the AVB connector to my & haven't heard a peek out of this setup since I connected the cable to the Studiolive 32 mixer. I want to set up the Studiolive 32R Stagebox to show up on the USER layer of my mixer but haven't had any success in doing so. So, as you can see, I'm in the Desert of knowledge & I don't have a clue which direction I should start out in to get this up & running? All the fun aside Joe here's a sum-up what I'm attempting to achieve! #1 - I need to copy the INPUTS layer & paste it into the USER layer (I hope) #2 - Setup the routing of the Studiolive 32R Stagebox channel 17 thru 32 appears in the Studiolive 32 mixer on channel 1 thru 16. When I buy the second Studiolive 32R Stagebox I'll assign it to appear on channel 17 thru 32 on the Studiolive 32 mixer & that will provide the best coverage in my studio. I do hope you can give me a hand or advice to get this configured because I can't get it working. I'm really sorry to throw this on your plate Joe, & if you can't help or don't have the time I understand but maybe you can suggest where I can get some help with this problem. Thanks Joe! You Du Man! Telè
Another way to automate even single notes (now) is to use the soundvariations. So for instance you can create two soundvariations for lets say the Hihat of a Kontaktinstrument like Studiodrummer. With them you can control the Pannning of a Hihat. The one takes a single note to the left side and the other takes it to the right side. You have to use cc 10 for this in your Programming. Cool feature. Thanks to Presonus. Great DAW!!
Hey man, thank you for teaching this helped me so much! I have a question, how do i record my existing tracks to another track. For example I'v got 2 clap sounds and I want it to be one so that I can just use one plugin, so how do I record those two tracks into one combined track so that I dont have to put plugins on both the previous tracks?
Instead of turning send on and off with automation, you could instead automate the send level, right? This way, you get more flexibilty how much reverb you want to add, so you could apply different levels of reverb on different parts of the track.
This is great ... How can we use an aux when mastering with studio one ??? Or rather add parallel compression when mastering in the project side of studio one ?
Hey Joe, this was super helpful thanks - say you're layering a bunch of guitar FX in a sort of crescendo. Would you use the first technique of simply duplicating the whole thing, leaving all the previous effects ON AND turning ON the new effect in the new duplicated track?
I've been having issues getting panning effects to work at all, much less for certain segments. I'm using Studio One Artist. I found the pan effect in the Presence VST. But that only seems to be on or off. At least I haven't figured out how to set it up otherwise.
Hello, Joe. Can you do a video on automating a single plugin over a numerous selection of tracks? For instance, I have a tape-stop plugin that I want to ONLY use on 6 out of 15 tracks. Is there a way that I can automate that plugin to effect only those 6 tracks without having to use 6 instances of that plugin on all 6 tracks? Thanks in advance.
Super helpful. Thank you. I have a basic question.. can I move my buses closer to my initial channel? Whenever I create a bus it goes right by my master fader waaay back in my mixer. Dragging it will not bring it back to where I need.
Joe another great tut! Hey question for ya, in the example where you placed the effect in the enable disable section of track are you still then able to automate the effects themselves as you would normally?
Joe, can you drag and drop from the browser, a FX chain, on to a piece of audio in an event. For instance, I have a guitar track, and I want to take a section of that track and add a different effect on this small section. Can you do something that will allow you to pick a FX out of the browser and drop it in this section?
please help when we add synth to instrument track then the synth window opens up... but in top left corner of that synth window has an add "+" option where instruments is also written when you click on that plus sign it allow us to add another instrument along with our first instrument but no sound is coming through that another even if we turn of the first one or even switch them, what is that for and how to utilize it
Is there a way to insert FX into an instrument player in the Show page? where I can for example boost the volume or decrease the volume like during a solo; the boost turns on and off at specific start and stop times for the Live performance? Thank you in advance I have been searching for this for a bit apologize if you have covered else where.
Hey joe is it possible to automate fx with third party plugins like serum fx, drvr etc, on studio one 5,I couldn't find any option to access it...? Do have any solution..?
Txs for the tips Joe - one problem in SO - how you make this with the A on the top of the page. When I want automate this I´ve no button for a "A" - great tutorial greatings
There are different ways to achieve that. First check under the top left little down arrow if you have checked "recently touched", so every parameter change would be recognize there. Secondly you could right click almost every parameter and choose "Edit Automation". Alternatively you can "touch" any parameter (check if it showing in the top left "Parameter" window) and hit Alt/Option+A to automatically create an automation lane...
Is it okay to edit tracks without sending them? I’ve been using studio one for years and I’ve never used busses or sending. How does that affect the overall mix? Mixing and mastering has been my main downfall and if sending effects to a separate track will clean that up, I’d love to start implementing it
Indeed, one can automate the amount of send. I have used it for vocal throws, for example. You send a vocal signal to a delay only in specific phrases.
Hi everyone. I know this is unrelated to the video, but I don't know where else should I ask this. The thing is that I discovered Dueling Mixes watching some of Joe's videos and the concept totally fascinated me, so I was eager to try it out. However, sad to say, I just found out they're no longer accepting new members. Does anyone know why? :(
I've been using the Touch setting and in the plugin itself I'll place my mouse on the effect level, mix, parameter what have you that I want to duck in and out. The one issue I've had with this and I'm wondering if you have a solution, is that I'll use my mouse and pull the effect up, but then it will automatically drop to zero instead of staying where I'm holding it. I end up having to keep the knob continuously moving to prevent this which isn't ideal. I really like the touch technique because for me it's faster than drawing in automation manually and I can fade things in and out etc.
I’ve seen the solution you’re looking for in another Presonus vid (sorry, can’t remember where) but I think you need to try “LATCH” setting to achieve what you want. If it isn’t latch, try the other two, or three options. Also, I think Greggor covers that in detail on the AUTOMATION tutorial section inside of presonus.com (if you’re a “SPHERE” member)
Hi Joe, i still can't figure out how to do what Pro Tools calls Clip Gain automation which is automation on the clip BEFORE the inserts. This isn't the fader automation which is post inserts. How do i do this?
This automation technique helped add a new approach to sending effects to melodies to add a difference in my beats. Thank you.
After you just dragged and dropped the effect on the sends section, I felt so stupid. I used to do every step manually and it appears I simply ignored one of the basic foundations of Studio One, which is its incredible workflow. Thank you so much for posting these valuable videos, I learn something new each and every time!
I recommend to use your own template. You don't even need to drag effect everytime! And it will help with creativity.
Thank you. What a great resource you are.
Thank you for another awesome video Joe!
Joe ....i really want to thank u for all u do in helping me with all ur tutorials
Awesome Joe, Thank you!! I also like the first two!!
Looking for this ALL OVER!!! Once again, thank you very much!!!
You are the best!!! Thanks a million!!!
Another great tutorial! Thanks Joe!
Great video, very helpful... Thank you Joe!

great voice
Such a simple and great freaking video
Nice one!
Cheers Joe!
Think I might start using Event FX for when I need a little sound design effect or ' one off' ear candy moments.
All the best
Jay
Oh man, so good Joe. Again😁 I did wonder what that little A was in the top left corner😂😂 Thanks a million👍
Very helpful

how do you automate a plug in to change inside the track like doing an eq sweep ? or slowing or spending up a delay?

I’ve seen the solution you’re looking for in another Presonus vid (sorry, can’t remember where) but I think you need to try “LATCH” setting to achieve what you want. If it isn’t latch, try the other two, or three options. Also, I think Greggor covers that in detail on the AUTOMATION tutorial section inside of presonus.com (if you’re a “SPHERE” member)
Can you do the same with silence? Instead of reverb on that section, can you silence that section?
I think you're looking for volume automation as opposed to the FX Send automation.
