The 80's was such a tough period to be an actor or musician if your success took place in the 60's or 70's. Society seem to be so disenchanted with anything that wasn't absolutely current day and the media always seem to be blasé in their roles to interview these iconic figures. It's easy to see why so many artists developed self-esteem issues during this period. Thank you though for posting this interview. It's always good to see Mr. Frid celebrate his craft.
You are correct. I read many an article about actors who were so famous in the 60's and 70's who could not find work in the 80's and beyond. I have become a fan of Murder She Wrote and I have noticed that they used many a famous actor of their day in the many episodes they had. I recently started back watching DS and now realize I missed out on not meeting Jonathan. What a guy I have so many questions I would love to ask him and can't. Blessing to all who did get to meet him.
Always loved Jonathan ! He was so handsome ! At age 12 had the biggest crush on him as Barnabas ! Had a glow in the Dark poster of Barnabas on my wall in my bed room ! Pretended he bit me at night !
Ohhh I had that Glow in the Dark Poster it was so awesome Now it's very rare, a collectible. I wish that some company would remake it. I also had all the posters, trading cards, comics , books and records from the TV show as well.
After Dark Shadows ended, Frid appeared in a TV movie with Shelly Winters in the early 70's. There was talk of it possibly being a series of some kind but it never happened. Then Frid did a foreign movie for a very famous foreign movie producer. He did the movie Seizure with two popular cult movie actresses Martine Beswick and Mary Woronov. No Frid never married nor had any children. He was a 'confirmed bachelor' and valued his privacy out of the spotlight.
@@BootsWms I liked the cult actresses in that movie are very well known and popular Mary Woronov who worked for Andy Warhol and Martine Beswick who did two James Bond movies and a Hammer Horror movie.
@@karendegraaf1146 Ohhh yes agreed, his voice is unmistakable. Great voice. As a kid I had the 1969 DS soundtrack album from the TV show where Jonathan recited like three poems on the record. He had a great voice. I saw two of his One Man Shows his reader's theater where he went on tour doing dramatic readings. He gave us the chills with his voice range from booming and dramatic to soft and whispery , gentle. He used his hands a great deal to express himself and he often looked like a music or movie Director with his hand gestures. very gifted guy. Sadly, he only only recorded one Dark Shadows Audio Drama from a company called the Big Finish Productions an audio called The Night Whispers He recorded that in his older age , too late in life. He recorded that with fellow actor who passed on a year ago or so, actor John Karlen who had played Willie Loomis on the TV show.
Sometimes when I see Jonathan in DS I think he looks a little bit like Leonard Nimoy. When he was filming DS I wish he had been asked to do a guest spot on Star Trex. He would have made a great Vulcan he could have been Spock's cousin or brother character.
Not everyone is interested in finding true love nor a soulmate. We want that for ourselves and then wish for everyone else to have it in their life as well but not everyone wants a partner. Mr. Frid never married. As many many older fans know, Mr. Frid was a Gay Man. He was not interested in a soulmate nor in a life partner and he did not want to adopt any children. He told us at the conventions that he , Mr. Frid, valued his freedom to come n go as he pleased without being tied down to commitments of a relationship. He had a large family in Canada and friends, so he was never alone.
@@thejupiter2574 I have heard he chose this lifestyle. I can understand him wanting to have his freedom and come and go as he pleased. I did not marry until I was later in life. Both my husband and I wanted our freedoms. Glad we did marry but I almost did not. No children. I look back and see how much that would have been for me a responsibility that I don't think I could handle. I understand Jonathan's feelings on this. Learning more and more about his life I wonder if he had children if they would be as famous in acting as he was. I always thought he was good looking in a unique way.
@@valerieaugustine8083 Actually he, gay people do not choose their orientation. We dont have a choice to be either or just as you did not one day suddenly choose to 'become ' straight. It's not a choice. You probably always knew that you were, just born straight . Our orientation is pre- programmed into our brain chemistry and Genetics which then awakens during puberty. Leading Geneticists and Biologists have mentioned and discussed this. Mr. Frid mentioned years ago that if had ever adopted any kids he would not want them to become actors as it's such a hard life filled with uncertainties and struggles. He said originally is grams wanted him to become a Minister because he had such a commanding stage presence but Mr. Frid said he knew from a very early age that acting was a passion of his and then later his desire to direct. He said he was not religious man but he did respect his family's Presbyterian beliefs, he just did not share them.
Such a lovely gentleman. Always loved him! No one could play Barnabas better than Jonathan Frid! He was the best! RIP
ALWAYS BEEN IN LOVE WITH HIM AN STILL IN LOVE WITH HIM EVEN THOUGH HE PASSED AWAY 2012 I AM STILL AN ALWAYS BE IN LOVE WITH HIM .GREAT ACTOR AN MAN.

I agree. Music really took a dive from the prog inspired things, that's for certain.

Love Dark Shadows!!
Love this interview with Jonathan!
agreed. Ohhh here's some cool DS Trivia: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp were also big fans of Mr. Frid's as well.

I used to pretend that he bit me in the wiener. He was so handsome.

Me too! He was the best! LOL That's pretty funny. I never pretended that Don't know why!!!
@@petitelapin60 Yep ! He was cute back then even cute as he grew older too !
I love that he was a Canadian actor! Working in the U.S. was good for him, especially on Dark Shadows! TFS!

He looks so much older here then expected. He said 3yrs after Dark shadows? He doesn't look like the same person to me.
No this is about 15 or 20 years later, you are funny. However he never did resemble Barnabas again,.
No that wasnt 3 yrs after DS, DS ended in 1971
About 16 years after DS. Still looks like Barnanus to me, same voice, too.

When he added something other than blood to his diet he ballooned a little, lol.

Frid had a commitment to ABC-TV, also appearing on other shows for the network. Star Trek was on NBC.
I hope he found true love...
