    I'm working on a staff for my grandfather as a gift. That bad boy would come in handy so much sense I'm only using a few hand tools (pocket knife, Leatherman, old file) to do it, all I have actually lol. I put a compass in the top and it was really tough trying to dig it out with just a pocket knife. That tool would be perfect. I hope they come back in stock soon! Great review!

    Can't go wrong with a Old Timer. I can remember the Old Time Knife my dad always had in his pocket. This knifes are perfect to take along on camping and hiking trips.

    I had often thought of buying a carving jack but couldn't justify the price. This Old Timer is much more affordable. I will have to take a look at it. I really appreciate that you didn't just talk about the knife, you actually made something with it... Oh the trials and tribulations of being a TH-camr.... LOL...Thanks for sharing Mike

      +Mark Young (Shunpyke) I think you would like this Mark. And it won't break the bank. I wish I'd have had the time to finish the spoon and make it nice but I did the best I could with the time I had. Thanks for watching!

    Looks like an excellent knife - I have the American made original and it also is a fine piece of gear but it is expensive - totally worth it because the blades lock in position so it’s very safe and come with thick leather pouch - the sharade is less expensive so it’s worth it as a edc - the American one is from the FLEX brand and truly is a craftsman tool - great video - I’m gonna buy one of the Chinese made carving tool - thanks for taking time to show

    Wow I would love to give one a try..I have quite a few Schrade knives. I have just brought 2 full tang knives one was the older model and then the new 52 but they may be a $30 knife over there in the US but to get them here to Australia they are $100 plus.Postage is a killer..I would like to buy the Old Timer 240T but when I look I bet it is $130 at a guess,it's a pity. Cheers ..Great videos..

  • @JAB671
    @JAB671 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That looks pretty cool and I think I want one. I am also excited to see Schrade making a folding pocket knife (albeit a specialty one) out of carbon steel. The old (pre-Taylor, American made) Schrade Old Timer trapper and stockman pattern knives - with carbon steel blades - were my favorite pocket knives of the type. Schrade still makes trapper and stockman model knives that look almost exactly like the older ones and I would love to see Schrade expand the use of carbon steel to include some of those models.
    I also enjoyed your review. There are a few TH-camrs from whom I enjoy watching knife/gear reviews, including Chris Tanner and Brian at Survival On Purpose. With your videos, I always enjoy your approach which often seem less like a review and more like a buddy saying, "Hey, I got this new knife. Check it out." You are still thorough in what you show - and I do still enjoy the approach others take, as well, but your style just adds some nice variety to the review.

    • @MichaelTravis12c27
      @MichaelTravis12c27  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JAB 619 I'm planning on saying something to them about the possibility of making some of their traditional knives in carbon steel. I think they would sell well. Their Genuine Bone line is really nice and has an upgraded stainless steel but there are a lot of folks who would buy carbon.
      I appreciate your kind words in my video style. I try to keep it informal but informative.

    I appreciate the info on each tool. I have had trouble finding real uses for all of them haha! I agree this knife kicks butt! Sharp out of the box and stays that way. I made a sheath because it was a little big in my pocket but I like to have it with me! I believe though Taylor/Schrade sold to a Chinese company. Sadly in 2004 these knives are not only made in China, they are owned by China lol. I really don't like that, but for the price and quality of this knife, it is worth it. I also own a Chinese Schrade doctors knofe that I have enjoyed very much, even with the funky Chinese stainless, it is sharp and well built. Not as nice as the old US Schrade knives in my opinion. This is a great little knife though, and thanks for the ideas on how I can use my blades... I will have more wood spoons than I know what to do with haha!

    Best look at that tool that I've seen to date. You sold me on it.
    I think the Flexcut brand pocket carver/whittler was the tool you were thinking about.

  • @jelkel25
    @jelkel25 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Got one and the only complaint I have is one of the gougers came as sharp as a tennis ball and took a fair bit of fixing but on the plus side it's very handy and in the UK American made knife prices (and many other products) are often hugely inflated so a Flexcut was never an option. Worth what you pay for it and the extra work it needed.

    Great knife! I don't know if I should thank you for presenting it or be mad at you since I got into these style of knives a while ago and just bought the Schared Uncle Henry Master...This one would have been a much better choice!
    Guess I have to see how I can get one over here...

    The blades are an exact copy of the Flexcut carvin Jack knife. I have had the the Flexcut knife for years. The Flexcut knife steel is very good and they lock in place. Is Flexcut making the blades or is Schrade making a copy of the Flecut? Very dangerous not to have the blades lock in place.

    The FlexCut Carvin' Jack is way more expensive but all tools lock. With carving like this, the force is applied to keep the blades from folding back so shouldn't be a problem. Think I'll get this Shrade one

    Need THREE! One to Ship to a friend overseas, one for the Emergency Bag, and one for EDC. And as I told others, if you can't carve a Bow Drill set or make a Feather Stick or strike a Ferro Rod with that in your hand, you shouldn't be out in the Woods alone.

    • @MichaelTravis12c27
      @MichaelTravis12c27  7 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @TheBeardedBurton
    @TheBeardedBurton 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I love the price and design but it really does stink it's non-locking blades with something that requires so many different handle/cutting techniques. The biggest knock for me though is they don't offer a left handed version.
    Great video Mike, very handy to have.

    • @MichaelTravis12c27
      @MichaelTravis12c27  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A left handed version would be nice. Maybe they will release one if this does well. I didn't have an issue with the slip joint design but I could see where a locking design might be beneficial.

  • @eqlzr2
    @eqlzr2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm so tempted to buy one of these just to have and play with it. But honestly, I can't see it replacing the wood carving tools that I have. Most of the time I just use a short extremely sharp straight blade, however after that blade the most useful tool I've found is a small regular V-chisel NOT bent 90 degs at the end, and something like the smaller curved blade for scooping material out of a hollow. Also, I can see from your carving that the blades come somewhat sharp, but not whistling polished sharp that can easily cut right across end grain like I need. Nice idea, but I'm gonna have to pass.

      "Had" is the key word there.
      William Collins shared this knife with us at Survivalist Base Camp on Facebook and I immediately went to order one from TaylorBrandsLLC for $39, but they didn't accept American Express. Then William posted another link at KnivesPlus and I snatched one for $22.96/shipped to New York. They literally sold out within minutes as other SBC members moved in and scooped them up. We wiped them out.

    Nice video! Do you know if they intend on making a lefty version? I've been eyeing the flexcut carvin jack for a while, but it's pricey. They do make a lefty version though, so I may be stuck paying the higher price.

    You said that Schrade was a family owned company but that seems not to be the case anymore since 2004, so they closed the factories after 100 years, now the name is owned by Taylor Brands and used for marketing purposes only.
    But I gotta say this is an awesome piece of kit.

      At the time of the video it was a family owned business. They have since been bought by Smith and Wesson.

    Thanks for the review, changed my mind from the Flexcut to Schade. I like your videos very much but can you either so putting music while you are taking our turn down the volume as I really want to hear what you have to say, and the music is a little of putting. Just my 2 cents worth :)
    Thanks, Eddie.

    I already have the Flexcut Carvin' Jack. So I won't be buying one of these. But that does look like a nice whittler.
    My knife system is 1) The Carvin' Jack for detailed woodwork. 2) Cabala's Alpha Guide Series knife for all food processing. 3) Jessica-X for heavy wood processing. I'm considering whether to get a dedicated bushcraft knife. Maybe a Mora Garberg. (?)
    I also have a Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian axe for if I know I'll be doing some heavy tree work. But I generally don't take it with me for a two or three day hike. I would definitely take it with me in a SHTF scenario.

    • @MichaelTravis12c27
      @MichaelTravis12c27  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +IamNemoN01 that makes perfect sense. A Cabelas Alpha Guide? Nice choice. You don't see that takes about to much. Do you like it? I'm not a fan of the X but it's very capable. I use a Terava Skrama in that role. The Garberg is pretty hard to beat. I removed the secondary bevel on mine and like it quite a bit more now. Check my channel for my review of the Terava Jakaripukko 110. That is another good option.

    • @IamNemoN01
      @IamNemoN01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never saw a Teraba Skrama until now. It reminds me of my old chopper - the 13HD Machete (KHHI Parang) made by Kukri House. Unfortunately it was stolen by a narcissistic relative, so I had to get something new, and the Jess-X fit the bill. I love the Gransfors Bruk, but that handle is so long, and I'm not a fan of hatchets. And it's harder to miss and injure yourself with a long blade than it is with an axe head . . .
      As far as the Cabela's/Buck's Alpha, I like it. I mostly use it for processing food (meats, fish, and vegetables). You just can't beat a concave edge for sharpness. I also shave with a straight razor - and I can get the Alpha sharp enough to shave. I go down to a 30,000 grit Shapton hone on my straights, and I touch up the Alpha to the same sharpness.
      I try to avoid the temptation to use the Alpha on wood. That's why I'm thinking of a dedicated bushcraft knife. I'll definitely check out your channel, and your knife recommendations. There are so many good options when it comes to bushcraft knives!
