I really enjoyed this review. I just bought one of the old-timer carving knives you reviewed. I knew what I was getting when I bought it. I'm hoping to get it sharp, maybe do some mods and see what I can do with it. My plans are bushcraft carving small items as a pastime in the woods. Again great review and Thank you.
I have the Flexcut version of this carver. I keep it my truck so when I’m waiting for someone or something. Always find a branch or carry a block of wood. Had to sharpen it out of the box. Kind hurts my palm so I wear a glove.
I think that's the perfect use case for a multi-tool like this. Kind of like having a mini toolbox in your pocket. Interesting that you had to sharpen yours though! Maybe Flexcut has improved their edges, since mine was super sharp. In any case, always great to have something nearby for that downtime!
I'm an old school machinist. Stock removal all depends on the material vs the tool. Would like a lockback version but i like mine as I'm a patient man.
I recommend old timer carving splinter if your the lucky one you get it sharp there all different mine was very sharp I cut my finger first touch and cuts my wood very very good and also mine is the same exact one and does have a locking macanisuim and mine is the same alot sharper bc it came like that I hope y’all are lucky I was my 14th birthday present for 2024 on June 28th I just got it today I ordered it or my nana did I love it
Sorry Man, I wouldn't call your video a review. The factory grinds don't make these blades sharp, but roughed out only. Considering the price, it's to be expected. As you can see, that Gerber knife cuts better, and that's because it's been properly sharpened. Once you sharpen and oil your 24OT properly, then you can use and review it well. HF
I enjoy the knife I'm not good at making wooden spoons but while camping I like to try and this does a good enough job and I've cut myself 3 times so far I wouldn't want it sharper
Victorinox (Swiss army knives) makes a lot of various models with many various tools but I have seen zero with the tool set this has (ie, curved and V-shape gouges for carving). I love my Victorinox hunter (with the saw) but this knife here looks interesting because of the carving tools it has.
I bought the Old Timer and was disappointed. It was dull as a weeding hoe and would not take an edge. Don’t waste your money on the Old Timer. If you want a good knife to whittle get a FlexCut.
The thing with a dull tool like this, especially where such carvers are designed to be pulled TOWARDS the body, is super dangerous because the force required bc it’s dull can force skipping, slipping, and injury. Definitely needs sharpening
Just in case you want a Splinter for yourself, here's a handy link! amzn.to/3fv2lBo
Serius? if someone is building a Kit for Doing basic carving classes would grabbing a couple be a serviceable Loaner tool

Worked good for me when I still had mine... a lil scary sometimes since it doesn't lock but I made it work

I concur its ok but needs good sharpen then hone edge on strop steel is als bit on soft side compared to flexcut blades 🇬🇧👍🐾🦊
I think you'd be better investing in a Swiss Army Knife.

Okay so why didn't you just sharpen it yourself? Its like 20 bucks. Obviously, some finishing was left out to cut costs it's not a big deal.
