Would honestly love a game with the mvc2 version of SonSon! Make it happen Capcom! Great work on this! Always catch myself playing a round in the battle hub in SF6!
SonSon is a game that I definitely recognize the name of, but I’ve never actually seen the game itself before! I’m loving these more focused mini-docs you’re doing! Can’t wait for the next one 👍
I'd kill to see SonSon and his grandaughter appear in a future MvC title after the second game! He's like Capcom's Alex Kidd or Tamagon! SonSon III needs her own game too!
Yeah, I love SonSon's MvC2 design. It would be awesome to see her return (alongside her grandfather too!) for a new game or at least in some cameo appearances.
Thanks man! Yeah, the arcade version is definitely pretty fun but I'm not as wild about the Famicom version! I'm very much looking forward to covering Higemaru myself.
Oh, I've plaued this one. They gave it away for free on Capcom Arcade Stadium on switch. The rigid lane system makes evading enemies pretty difficult compared to a lot of other STGs, especially with how many enemies will relentlessly pursue you, rather than continuing to run off screen.
I spent a lot of time playing with Sonson in MvC2 and never looked into the background. I used to run Psylocke, SonSon and Spiderman. Good times..... and Good Info! I like this new Mini-Doc series!
Nice job! Son Son is an interesting character in the world of Journey to the West inspired gaming. Seems like Psycho Soldier borrowed much of the format of this game. I love Son Son II alot since it plays like a spiritual sequel to black dragon which I am a huge fan of and cant wait for that episode!
Thanks dez, appreciate it man! Man, Psycho Soldier really does look like a spiritual successor to SonSon that's done much better. It seems like SNK was regularly ripping off Capcom though, kind of like how they made Ikari Warriors right after Commando since Capcom didn't bother doing a sequel until years later. Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting to Black Tiger too. I didn't dive too deep into SonSon II since it will presumably get its own episode (someday... 😂). Thanks for watching dude!
Aight, I think I’m obsessed with this series! That game was pretty fun, I’m even more curious about it after this video! Love learning about these gems!❤
The character from MvC2 that no one understood! Nice! (Son son sansei?) I am a very pleased about these little fun size eps. Let's see if we can spread them around some!
Yeah, so many people had no idea what the reference was when she was announced since it was never a very well know game. Glad you’re enjoying the smaller episodes! I plan to put them together in compilations by year as I get more finished. Thanks for watching!
Only found out about this game after seeing it on one of the Humble Bundles. I do follow all the versions of Journey to the West and the game versions.
Fun fact - unlike many other CAPCOM classic 8bit games, SonSon has been pretty popular in the post-Soviet states back in the 90s when Famicom bootleg consoles (aka Dendy) and cartridges were on rage.
Oh wow, I had no idea it was big on the Dendy over there. The Famicom version a pretty rough port that really just falls short of the arcade game so it's interesting to here it was received so favorable in some places. Thanks for the info!
Played Pocket fighter quite a lot on the Saturn, never knew it was Son Son, and I actually never knew about the game until some time ago, I like the original Dragon Ball and Z until Freeza is defeated. But the original is funny to watch, doesn't take it too seriously and is better drawn/animated overall. Great narration and presentation!
Yeah, SonSon definitely isn't a very well known series since it didn't find a ton of success. I'm a big early Dragon Ball fan myself too. I just re-watched the entire original series earlier this year actually and it has aged very well. Thanks so much for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video!
This is an odd game because it doesn’t quite fit any specific genre. It’s kind of a shmup but you can’t move freely. It’s kind of a run’n’gun but it auto scrolls. It’s also very much a sort of rail defense game, like Tapper or Plants vs. Zombies.
Yeah, the borders are certainly blurred when it comes to SonSon’s genre, but even Capcom themselves officially refer to the game as a shooter these days so I’ve been mainly sticking with their classifications. It also seems like many people place the run ‘n fun subgenre under shoot’em ups too these days which makes things even more convoluted. Classic video game genres in this day and age are weird. 😅

Thanks man!! Yeah, it’s really a shame Capcom reinvented the character for MvC2 then did nothing at all with her after that. 😮💨

I would love to see a anime @@RewindArcade
This is one of the better early Capcom arcade titles. Loving this series of videos you're doing!
Thanks man!!
One of my favorite arcade games ^_^
Can't wait for the Pirate Ship Higemaru! video ;)
Thanks man! Yeah, the arcade version is definitely pretty fun but I'm not as wild about the Famicom version! I'm very much looking forward to covering Higemaru myself.
Such a cool series. I always wanted to know more about the history of Capcom.
Thanks, glad you're enjoying these! It's been fun to put together so far. I'm really looking forward to getting into the Famicom era of Capcom games.
Great series so far!
Thank you!!
Super enjoying this series!
That’s awesome, thanks a ton!!

Yeah, the floaty movement when switching rows makes the later levels especially brutal. Still a pretty fun game though.

Thanks man! SonSon was awesome in MvC2. Really sucks they never brought her back.
Capcom needs to make a new modern Son Son adventure game.
That would be most excellent!

Thank youuuuu!!
The fact that sonson is in marvel vs capcom 2 is miraculous !!!
Great video my friend. I am reading journey to the west. Greetings from Argentina.
Thank you!! And that’s very cool you’re reading Journey to the West. I want to give it a read one of these days myself. 👍

Nice, there are a ton of video games based on Journey to the West, especially in the 80s.

Have you play SNK game Psycho Soldier ?
The gameplay is very similar Son Son arcade
Oh, that game looks very similar! A lot more so than the actual SonSon sequel, haha.

Wonderful stuff! Keep it up, plz! Great music choices, btw.
Thank you!! I’ve had a great time picking out music for this particular video series.
