I'm in the middle of an awfully busy period at work, so hitting embargos when I just arrived back from a work trip is a little too hardcore for me! But at least I managed to put this out before the premium edition players can launch the game :D Next up I'll do a 3-4 hour daily stream while the hype is through the roof, and I'll be slowly chipping away at a "fundamental series" of guides.
That's great work for the community, much appreciated! Some things good to know: 1:26 A lot of pvp players like to set "Foliage Quality" and "Shadow Quality" to None, for the sake of clarity. 4:07 "Camera Acceleration" works completely different, it does *not* modify the speed of panning=scrollin!. Instead it is the initial delay=windup until the panning starts. 0% looks very abrupt, I would go with *10%* so it feels as smooth as other RTS games. 4:23 "Camera Shake" is very strong in some cases, hence should be turned off. 4:55 "Swap Right-Click Press and Release" is *on* in most RTS, so if you clicked but want to cancel the command you can just drag the cursor somewhere else and to abort the command. You say one shouldn't play like this, but truth is the majority does. 9:09 "Control Left-Click is treated as Double Click": Players should be aware that if turned on, you can no longer add/remove stuff to/from the current selection via ctrl + left click (so you have to use shift + left click from now on). 10:20 You missed "Disable Cutscene Character Portraits" - uncheck if you don't want to see the upperhead characters during the campaign dialogues that look like a mobile game. 12:22 "Threshold Snap to Unit" really needs rephrasing. What it does is setting the maximum speed (milliseconds) how quickly you need to double-tab a selection group hotkey so the camera jumps to the group (i.e., 1 twice and it jumps to group 1). Default value is ok. 13:29 "Display Attack Range - Single unit selection" should be checked, it only applies with 1 thing selected. For example you micro Greek ranged hero or re-target with a Tower and keep seeing the range (you can't hover in this situation). ADDITIONS: - If someone still hears an AI voice when hovering over any text, go to Sounds tab and uncheck "Narrator On". - Go to Accessibility: Visibility tab and turn "Mini-Map Contrasts" from 0% to 30%, which removes the 3D effect for the sake of clarity. - If you have premium edition, you can activate the god portraits of the original game in the DLC tab. Big mistake of the devs: *Military commands don't work on the construction view and vice versa!* (Different from AoT.) The only units with both pages is the Set Pharaoh and Norse infantry+heroes. In these cases you have to use "Show Military Commands" hotkey that you changed from a to alt-a at 20:50. However, you don't need to change formations and stances to alt-? as you did at 15:50, because there is no longer a conflict with construction commands. IMO the original behavior was better.
They should just put building menu behind a hotkey menu like in starcraft. Leaves the main page open for every imagineable command and formations for both villagers and military units. Trying to press alt+x to garrison in the heat of things feels really awkward and unnatural. Changing these to was is currently building binds, forcing you to remap buildings to other keys defeats the purpose of putting it all in a grid. I would rather have press an extra key before choosing a building, rather than have to multiple different key combinations simultaneously.
I requested a hotkeys video on one of your prior uploads, and you have instantly delivered. Thanks so much, Naka. I haven’t had time to get into the game yet, but this will be invaluable when I get around to it. Happy release day!
Of course mate, it was a really good idea! I will probably reiterate a lot of this in mini-guides as well. There are many advanced functions that not everyone will be familiar with, and I really just blazed through them without explaining in detail for the sake of brevity.
Naka giving free coaching on hotkeys , this is actually very great first minutes when i launch the game i am gonna go through everything one by one (x2 view time Kappa) , knowing possibilities that hotkeys can bring us 100% will improve game play once we get use to it , lol i am used to original hotkeys and this will take while .
Thank you so much. Getting into MP now so these changes helped a lot. I probably will make more changes later since coming from AOE2 so would like more things similar to that but overall this should get me started.
Super useful tips as always, especially the swap ctrl/shift, i totally missed it X) Really hope the Atk move will be improved, with pathfinding is probably the only thing i would change in this game! Thanks!
Just picked this game up my first age of mythology game, dont know how ive never played them before this games a blast! Im more used to shooter so wasd and build my binds around that not sure if thats possible though in a rts
They should have put building in a menu like in starcraft. That way they can have all the command keys be asdf, both for vills and mili, and still utilize all the same keys for buildings. This way they wouldn't need to put Garrison, stop attack etc on alt+ commands at all. There would also be room on the commands grid for formations. Right now Norse soldiers have to do the opposite, where they pres a to move to a separate grid for formations, but basic commands are the same; alt+ on both grid pages. The starcraft solution is so much more elegant. I hope someone can suggest this to them and they be willing to listen.
It's there, and works kinda well, but not perfectly. Currently assigned to space, see in the hotkey section of this video. I suggest to change everything to make a-click possible.
As a new RTS player this game is a bit overwhelming. I'm trying to get used to the hotkeys but its a lot of memorization that feels unnatural. Also the high pace of the game and the amount of information you need to process is daunting.
No WASD if you actually want to get good for competitive play. Click the minimap to jump to spots, use control groups to have a quick way to select/jump to armies and buildings, and use jump to building hotkeys if they aren't on a control group. Use mouse movement at the edge of the screen to shift the camera for short distances. Save WASD to use for unit/building creation.
Great video. How can I quee up bills from ONE FOOD SOURCE TO ANOTHER. like when they finish one BATCH OF lions/gazzele they move to another? if you just shift click they will immidieatly move. I would have to manually shift click each little lion or gazzele then click on another food source. tnx
Glad the video helped! Unfortunately the unit logic for shift queues will be individual per animal there. So you'd have to shift click the whole lot before adding a shift click to the next group.
hi, im trying to play a sheep escape map, and i have to bind my towers to p like in the old days, but it wont bind to anything for some reason? not towers, not walls, not sky passages. any idea why? ive tried all different gods
There are 4 hotkeys for "tower" one per civ. Use the search box, make sure to change them all. Make sure they don't conflict with anything. If they do conflict, they will show a red "*" symbol. I tested it and works fine for me. P is a rubbish hotkey btw, I'd advise not to do this.
@@NakamuraRTS p is the same hot key as in the old days. I'm used to that one. I've done all of that though and it still doesn't work. is there a chance it's map related? can a map disable keybinds?

12:16 - depending on your setting for "invert control and shift", it will be either a shift click or a ctrl click on the unit icon. A single click just swaps focus in your subselection to bring up the commands available. This is a good thing because if I have several types of buildings selected, I can just use "tab" to go through them as explained at 14:20.
@@vitaliusgasenas6949 That's just menu options like showing or hiding scores, and the game time. Stuff I don't want to accidentally do, so I made it a hard to reach combo.
