You're right. The over arching goal of Data scientists and SWEs is the same - solving problems. They may have slightly different approaches, but that's about it. Thanks for sharing! :3
In DS you will spend your life in meetings explaining why you didn’t get anything done since the last meeting because you’ve been in another meeting before the current meeting.
Very glad to hear you have found what you like. I am in a very confused state right now about whether I should look more engineering focussed MLE roles or data science roles or data engineering roles or complete switch to SE! It would be great if you can make a video comparing these especially with long term job opportunities as the data industry matures. Thanks again for another informative video!
@@emma_ding Awesome video. Yes similarly a video on data engineer vs software engineer given your unique experience around all these roles would be very interesting
This is the best series video for the data science job seeker. I've been following you for more than two month and I watched all of your videos. I learned a lot from the beginning to the end and I have 4 interviews this week and feel that I will get a data science job very soon. Thank you so much Emma.
Very glad to hear you’re enjoying your new role. I’m about to start my first DS in a couple weeks (mix of analytics and product) and your videos helped me a lot with the interview prep, so thank you!
I really liked your reasoning for choosing Airbnb bc I would have done the same. I’m also interested more in the engineering aspect of data science, right now I’m in a data engineer internship and I’m surprised how much more I enjoy it compared to data science. I like your story and I hope I can find a similar path. Thank you for sharing your story!
Hi all Data Science is good career Web development is dead no one interested in developing websites, apps etc., What is the use of developing websites without doing business with websites so Data science is future Data science excellent career...
This is very interesting Emma! I've heard a lot of stories about data professionals who transition to Data Science from other fields but it's rare to hear stories about people's transition from DS to another field. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Emma for sharing your experience! Love to learn more about your interview experience of landing multiple DS offers and tips & tricks! Keep it up!
Thank you for your video. It was interesting and resonated with me. Why is it that you did not transfer to the algorithms or even inference teams first? Did they not have work at the time that would have been interesting or relevant to having more technical skills? Thanks again.
I'm so curious how you obtained such deep knowledge in AB testing? because it doesn't seem like your work in Airbnb has much to do with running AB tests. How to land on a DS job that focuses on experimentations if I don't have any chance to work on an actual test hands-on in my current job? I feel you might have some experience to share in that aspect.
thank you Emma for sharing your journey! It’s fabulous! I am also in similar DS position, could you share what’s your preparation for transfer from DS to SDE? Thanks!
Love you and your videos Emma~~ I'm currently a materials science phd at CMU. i'm determined to find a job as a DS. thank you for your videos and encouragement! I will update this comment if i get any offer in the near future.
Hi Emma, good video as always. I am wondering if you have considering transit to machine learning. Is machine learning engineer a common transition of a DS?
Hi Emma, would love to know if you have any learning community. I am preparing to do a career shift and learn more about coding. As I am going through the leetcode challenge, I find it quite difficult to keep up with the work and when it gets hard, I naturally give up. Would love to learn about how you stick with your plan and make your dream come true. Thank you!
Glad to have come across your channel. Switched from desiring to chase after Data Scientist/Analyst roles to Data Engineering positions. What's your LinkedIn?
Emma, thanks for the post! I am curious that are you mainly doing spark and data pipeline work as a software engineer? What languages are you using? Thanks!
Congratz on the switch, your channel grew so much since I subscribed! I do have a question since I've been thinking about switching into more of a software role also. Is grinding leetcode a must to make a successful career transition?
Hi Emma. Great video. Wanted to understand what languages/tools you used in Data Science and what additional languages/skills you needed to learn to enter Software engineering. Would be a great help if you could let me know.
Hi Nishant, great questions! You rightly assume an overlap between Data Science and Software Engineers, the difference is in emphasis. Engineers need to be highly skilled in a language, with some experience or knowledge of data analysis for large data sets. If you are making the move from DS to Software Engineer you'll need to seriously skill-up on your coding skills! I share my coding preferences here -> th-cam.com/video/hAqg2dlNeUc/w-d-xo.html, but it's worth considering what language is consistent with the company you are applying for. Shopify uses Ruby for example!.
Who cares about titles, titles change often. Just look at the job description and skills, if your skills somewhat match demanding skills and if you like the job, just apply. Once you get the job, start burning your ass from 8 - 5 to make a bunch of share holders rich ;)

everyone solves problems.
This the best, clearest, most useful DS prep channel i have ever watched which helps me landing on multiple offers. Thanks Emma
Thanks Alan! Appreciate the kind words and best of luck with your new job!

Ok after 2 years!!
Can I ask you what did you choose ??😅

“You should not constrain to your current title” Love it
Interesting to see that I’m not the only person using data science as a bridge to move to SE.
Thank you Emma and your inspiring videos. They are so helpful for people like me who is frustrated with the job hunting in data science!

so excited for your new role Emma!

Good explanation about the transition which is going to happen to me after being data scientist for 2 years.

I really benefited from your video, which is very well put together. Looking forward more videos in the future.
Great points Emma! and thank you for helping us prep for Data Science interviews!
Thank you Emma. Always great content that I can learn from.
Thank you for sharing your story. It really has inspired me to keep working on building my ds skills
Very good video! Thank you Emma.
I have also switched entirely from ds to sde. cheers~!
Hi I am also from ds. I want to switch to sde. Can you guide me?
Thank you for your video. It was interesting and resonated with me. Why is it that you did not transfer to the algorithms or even inference teams first? Did they not have work at the time that would have been interesting or relevant to having more technical skills? Thanks again.
Interesting question! I was more interested in learning big data than algorithm or inference.

Keep it up. I had a very similar career path with you. I do agree with what you shared.

Hi Emma, maybe I missed it- what sort of SWE role did you switch into? (Eg frontend, backend, DE, ML, etc)

Hi Emma, you didn't mention what part of software engineering you are involved with?
Hey! Good question! It was a combination of data engineering and full stack.
I also want to do the same but I've no Idea where to start with
Emma, thanks for sharing. Could you please how you learned DS stuff from a non DS related major? Thanks!
So Emma, if you don't have CS or Stats background/degree, what is your academic background? Great video always. Thank you!
I have question: I think being an engineer is quite busy, how could you find time to work on your channel.
thanks for sharing, I'm a analytics DS and am interested in this transition as well
how did the transfer affect your job level and TC at Airbnb?
Emma, in which job were u paid more?
Being a data scientist or a software engineer?
I got the same compensation.
@@emma_ding ohh okay, thanks for your response :)
This is great.

Does your salary change if you switch from DS to SWE internally?
can you share the data engineering resources you used
Thank you

Is it hard to be a data scientist?
I have to say your own DS advice has been misleading for Facebook interviews.
Could you be specific on which part was misleading to you? Really appreciate it if you could help me with correcting my mistakes.
What coding language(s) do you have that enabled you to transition?
Hi Crag! Python and Scala were very helpful. :)
