I'm a sports medicine provider. If the pain is on the inside of your elbow, which by the mechanism of injury I'm guessing so, you have golfers elbow. If it's on the outside you have tennis elbow. Regardless, they are both a form of tendonitis and they are both overuse injuries, due to repetitive strenuous motions, like hammering. Treatment is rest, ice, and tylenol. If you aren't going to rest, it won't go away. If you can't resist hammering though, get a counterforce brace for your elbow. It helps a bit.
rest won't be enough in this case :) it will just come back as soon as he goes back to hammering :) so tendons need some work :)
Conservative approach first, always. There's no reason to suggest that once the aggregating factor is discontinued, it won't begin to heal on its own.

I love having my morning coffee, watching cabin builds on the TV, while sitting in my cabin. I wish I could just keep building. Cherish these moments because when its done you'll be wishing you could build another. Our cabin is more like a 1 bed cottage with electric so i might build a small 10x10 completely rustic cabin near the deepest part of my property.

What is great about Tico nails in a joist hanger is that they are so stout that even a glancing blow won't bend the nail. They are made for confined space nailing.

Wowie Wowie it’s coming together nicely! Those days don’t always feel productive as you don’t see big results, but it is nice to clean up a bunch of little things on the to do list sometimes.
Not sure if you have them down in your neck of the woods, but maybe try and look into Simpson Strong Tie - SD Connector Screws. They are used instead of those little structural nails, and far more gooder on those hard to reach places with a hammer.
If I could vote I would say a nice little window in your kitchen area. Nothing like doing dishes and watching nature do it’s thing. Plus if using propane doesn’t hurt to have a window cracked just a smidge for safety. Also, if you cook like me will need that cross breeze to clear some over cooked smoke out haha

Yes, you should add a couple of windows under the loft, presumably where the kitchen will be.
When you're doing dishes it's really nice to look out a window into nature.
My DIY husband says you need something called the “Tyler twist” for your tennis elbow. We are rehabbing a century old ADK off grid cabin ourselves and appreciate the realness of your channel!

Doctor here and have had the same issue. An elbow strap was somewhat helpful but a cortisone injection at the site solved the problem.

The loft is a great idea for more space and going to be a cool addition to the cabin ! And I Agree for dad to get his own Mic !
Always a treat to see how this one is coming along. A window below the loft sounds good if it's going to be an area where you work and cook facing that wall, it's nice being able to look out. Depends on which layout you are planning I guess.

I get the elbow pain from time to time. I believe it’s Mostly from over use. They make a strap you can wear that limits the use of that forearm muscle. Relieves the tension on that tendon.
I vote for a long transom window higher on the back wall. Let’s some natural light in.
Graham, I was expecting to find out what you decided to do about the loft beam resting on top of the door jamb. You got lots of comments on that following last week’s video so the suspense is killing me as to whether or not you are going to re-engineer the structure.
Yes, always yes to more windows in an off-grid cabin so that you can enjoy the landscape views. I hope you’ll go with cedar siding again, but I know it’s cost prohibitive and time-consuming…

My vote is a bay window because once your loft is built you will no longer have those windows bring in light in that area. And just a thought have you ever thought of making Duke a makeshift home something with a dividers so he can keep his kitchen from his bedroom separate like he's already done so he won't work his way to the cabin or back into the outhouse. maybe just a quick build that you can make it home and bring to your next trip to the cabin ?

11:51 simpson makes structural screws for joist hangers. Pricey, but would help with the tennis elbow issue.

Your elbow pain is called lateral epicondrilitis or tennis elbow. It comes from fully flexing the muscles on the outside of your forearm and then adding the impact of the tool makes your tendons pull on the attachment.

Change the front pointy windows with the back pointy windows so the front ones are bigger as one big glass wall and the back ones smaller so you can fit a bed there and sleep there no problem, that would be amazing

Might want to consider having a window that opens in loft if you are heating with a wood stove, otherwise might be too hot to sleep up there, seems to be a common issue with small cabin lofts 😅

I've had it in both arms, and can tell you, it will not go away unless you rest it.
Voltarin gel will also help a bit.
Look up the physio exercises for it, and as silly as they are, do them. 1lb weight for wrist lowering(not raising) will help if you do them properly and can resist the urge to be a man about it and ramp it up lol
Treat this issue like a war of you against your tendons. Do everything you can to win!
Don't cut corners or it will come back.
If you do nothing it will spread to your shoulders because they will start compensating for it.

I’ve actually used a nail gun for those hangers before and works pretty well, takes some practice for getting the aim right on but definitely helps the fatigue

Since windows by the loft don’t open, you may want to consider venting system. It’s going to get crazy hot up there if you’re sleeping there in the summer. Even a greenhouse fan system to allow for venting of cooking and hot air in general.

I am not a doctor but i have lived with tennis elbow for many years now. at the time of my injury all the doctors said rest except one who said to continue use but along side exercises that will help manage the pain and let you continue doing what you love. i am not a tennis player, play golf or any kind of sport enthusiast. I did work hard repetitively using my arms which is the culprit of this injury not unlike what you do. you may be able to google stretching exercises that really are a miracle. i will let you know the two i do whenever the pain gets uncomfortable. do not get me wrong the pain is chronic but quite livable. the first exercise is easy let your arm relax along the length of your body, drop your shoulder. make a fist and turn it toward the back and pull your wrist up. a few of those on a regular basis will help a great deal. the other exercise is arm in front parallel to the floor hand flat, fingers pointing toward the ceiling and using your other hand pull back on all fingers while keeping your arm straight. you should feel a good pull on the tendons. 20 seconds several times a day will relieve you pain and injury. in fact drop your hammer and do them now. both easy and while you are at it it would not hurt to do these exercises on both arms. this two stretches are my go to. they work and i am grateful. surgery was an option, so were drugs but nothing was a promise for a cure, i did neither. i do the stretches especially if i over work regardless the extent of the chronic pain. i wish you luck because i would hate to not see you every Saturday...you make my day!
You can use the framing gun on the hangers, just a little dangerous as there is a small chance you glance the nail at yourself off the wall. But if have the safety right above the bracket hole it will usually go right in the hole.
The aging thing is no dam joke. I keep watching what you’re doing and I think with my 30 year old brain “I can do that. I’m fit. That makes sense. I can get a friend for that high part but I’m strong and smart.” Until I realize I’m actually a 61 year old woman trapped in that 30 year old brain 😅😅
And before anyone comes at me, I just bought a 100 year old house in pretty good shape and am doing what I can on the beaut! ❤❤

The palm nailer is my least favorite tool. It's the right tool for the job nailing joist hangers, but it's so damn loud. I try and avoid it whenever I can in my cabin build. I'll be getting after the deck soon though, so it'll be back in use.

Was thinking it might be good to build your front deck to make siding / windows that much easier. It feels like the wrong order of operations, but, wrap, windows, siding, from scaff / safe ladder might be well worth it...

I may have never played a Dr. on television, but, you should look after that elbow. Get a sports therapy treatment and rest / ice...

This episode had me laughing. Maybe you should put Duke to work. He's quite the skilled craftsmouse. Your cabin is looking better and better each video. I'm of the opinion you should put windows on the back side under the loft. Not big, but big enough to let in more light and some fresh air when need be. Just a thought, but Because your big beam for the loft Carry's a substantial amount of weight, consider swapping the door frame header for a piece of rectangular tube steel so over time your door doesn't become an issue. You can no doubt find a piece of scrap that will fit your needs.and since this is all diy, what's it gonna hurt. Stay safe. love your personality.
