- On this day in 1970 the world's first jumbo jet flew from John F. Kennedy International Airport to London Heathrow Airport. Here’s Movietone’s report on this momentous trip.
Clipper Constellation, the first Transatlantic Jumbo Jet touches down at London Airport. Twice as heavy as a 707 the Jumbo presents many problems in passengers handling. ® ® We look at London Airport's new thirteen million pound terminal and see how they intend to cope with two thousand passengers an hour, and we fly for the first time in a three hundred and fifty ton airliner.

Awww back in the day when flying was an event... you dressed up for it, was served food on real plates with real silverware... I first flew a 747 from San Francisco to Hartford CT in my best hippie finery with my 1 year old daughter in hers... it was awesome...

+British Movietone Sadly it isn't that way any longer Jenny... I flew to Ireland and into London about 18 months ago... it was cramped, small and so different than what it use to be...talk about stress... between the security, the luggage restrictions....but the reality is I would get on a plane tomorrow to go visit family an friends....

Best aircraft ever made, Boeing should never of stopped making them.
Unfortunately, it's a matter of economics and logistics. With smaller planes, airlines can offer more flights between destinations, catering to a largar number of passengers. However, the 747 is undisputedly the smoothest jet ever.

The beginning of a five decades long era of the new age.The 747 series.Everything else paled in comparison,and still does.The cramped 2 engine generic boring aircraft now dominating the airways will have no legacy like the "Queen of the skies".
