    The last one is scheduled for delivery next month. Hell of a run, and still sets the bar for performance in a lot of ways.
    With most airframes lasting a solid 30 years it should have 80 years of regular commercial service.

    The 747 is still a marvel of engineering after more than 50 years.

    excellent educational film; giving far more technical details than most could ever imagine.

    I was one of the lucky pilots who got to fly this magnificent aircraft only 6 years after it was introduced to the world! ❤️

    I like the older vintage 747's as shown here than new modern 747's, looks more beautiful especially years before winglets.

    Pan Am and 747 -synonyms for each other: Another as a king of the skies in seventies and another as a queen. Also what is great in this video is that, that Pan Am's 747 - the number two - is testing as a first in the world ABS brake systems - years before automotive industry (which actually adopted the idea from 747).

    • @pcressma
      @pcressma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually.....no. ABS was not adopted from the 747....it was developed by Dunlop in the early 1950s...a system known as Maxaret.

    • @pcressma
      @pcressma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was first used in the Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck where it was found to significantly reduce stopping distances on icy runways. Everything after that was simply an improvement on the existing Maxaret technology.

    Pity the 737 Max missed out on such careful assessment.

    When this jet was built, I believe Boeing wanted to make sure they had the perfect jet and everything worked the way it was supposed to. This was 50 years ago but since then, we learned Boeing will coverup in order to not spend extra money to perfect things such as the MCAS System.

      Back then the relationships corporations had different dynamics with community, employees, investors. CEOs, board were primary concerned on quality of products, employee wellbeing. Financial engineering, leveraging, derivatives were in its infancy. Wall Street though important were less of a driver in the nation. This switched in the 80s with financial deregulations coming one after the other and joining free trade arrangements. The dynamics are what makes a buck in a quarter or so, and damn the rest. Employees are also less likely to be retained, trained and move up the ranks. A CEO/board may only be around for a year or 2 -- their focus is delivering for that period.

    A remarkable piece of American inguinity to reigned for 50 years passing the torch on to the 777 and it's two (2) engine GE90 ETOPS. Technology advancements and testing at it's best.

    Mach .99 in a 747-100... Wonder how long the test flight crew had to hold that speed to gather enough data.

    There are few 747s still in service around the world because not only pandemic but also safety reasons by Boeing since 737 Max crash in 2018-19 and replacement plane like some 747 can be stalled in a boneyard in California like Victorville

    I assume most Boeing-ites (at least Seattle area) know the RA001 may still be found at the Museum of Flight.

    The 747 is in it's sunset phase as a type now....good to see it's roots here. Engine technology has made it unnecessary to run 4 engine airliners in almost all cases.
    Long range versions of 777's and 787's can run 300 PAX over similar route distances as the 747-400 without breaking a sweat on two engines.

    • @flyaround5953
      @flyaround5953 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark O'Cain yea but still you gotta think also if something happens to both those engines in the middle of the ocean your done for where’s as there’s less of a chance in my mind of all 4 of the 747’s engines going out so in my mind it’s safer

      The current version of the 747, the -8, uses a version of the same engines that power the 787 (GEnx-2B, to be exact).

    Not sure how many of these blokes have passed on but they'd be turning in their graves at the behaviour of Boeing over the last decade. That comment of each bloke being their own enterprise, something has gone horribly wrong somewhere and the death certificate of Mcdonnel Douglas was signed long before 1997. I fear the Boeing company signed its death warrant when it decided to play God to compete with the Airbus Neo. I would trust Airbus now to produce the future of airline travel I.E When the fossil fuel jet finally comes to its end, I can't see Boeing being around anymore.

    Whoah! That old (new at the time) 747 looked about to have a tail strike accident like Japan Airlines Flight 123. Upon watching the video more. Hell man! I honestly have to say that the first generation on big airplane pilots were flying by the seat of their pants (pun intended) as they had no experience with such a large plane.

    • @Mark_Ocain
      @Mark_Ocain 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll notice a wooden skid on the tail for the test. Still, yes, the JAL 747 SR (Island Hopper) tail strike caused issues with the rear pressure bulkhead which was not properly repaired in the first instance and led to the crash years later.

    • @fordlandau
      @fordlandau 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its flying like that to test tail strike and rejected take off. Thus the timber on the tail. Deliberate flying. By super skilled test pilots.
