Finding the right chords for a melody can sometimes be tricky, especially if in your head, you hear a different flavor of chord for a certain note, but you have no idea how to actually replicate it on an instrument. I understand the theory behind calling a first-inversion a "6" chord, but I think a lot of musicians will interpret that phrase as meaning to add a 6 (in this case, A) to the triad.
III(major 3) is very dramatic, vi(minor 4) is bittersweet, v(minor 5) tones down the bright major chord, bVI(flat 6) and bVII(flat 7) transports you to a new dimension. That's really all you need to know
It's a matter of music theory: you're "supposed to" end with a V, because it's a very strong and consonant ending. If you want more detail, check out the expression "circle of fifths" (and it's related chord progressions). Jazz and classical music people do it all the f****in' time.

The chord made out of the 6th note, (A minor) is pretty good at it too. Two chords that won't give you the felling of "it's over" are the V chord and the VII chord. V never resolves (of course there is always a trick to break the rule, but not in this case), it leads (aka makes you wanna listen) to I. I and vi resolve

This goes back to days of Bach. However, I teach my students modern harmony, in which a "six" chord is a triad plus the 6th scale degree added to the triad.

Chord progression number 2, she said we never go back to the root, but couldn't you technically look at the Am as the root of the relative minor key? And the cord progression would be i-VII-VI-VII?

I absolutely agree. This chord progression has no indication of it being in C Major and the only reason why it doesn’t really sound resolved is because the resolution from the bVII to the tonic isn’t a very strong one.
I skipped to the “The Journey” chord progressions, right from the beginning, so I missed the point where she pitched up the keys. I played along with the progression in C major and thought I was having a stroke.

Very informative! Almost all progressions were my favorite, but the "secondary dominants" has little more points than the rest of them! Loved the video, subscribed!!
A chord progression that uses all the chords in a major scale: I/vi/ii/iii/IV/viidim/I/V. I play each chord for two beats, a good tempo for the feel is 60bpm. I repeat this but replace the V chord with a tonic seventh. For the next progression of the song I like to play a major IV/ivfor one full bar each, then I/vi for two beats each then a V for a full bar. Repeat the IV, then play for iv/V7 for two beats and then the tonic for 2 full bars. You can loop back around to the first progression or do whatever you like. It’s fun to impress people with all the chords, especially when you drop some chords that aren’t in the key (I7, iv)

The “minor change” progression is a classic used by The Beatles … I’ve written dozens of songs (with clever titles and lyrics) for my piano students. One of these songs, “Please Please Give Me Peas”, is very Beatles-esque and uses the “minor change” progression frequently. 😀🎹

Number 10 has me confused. You played a minor, F major, a minor, E minor, which in the key of C would be vi, IV, vi, III. But you wrote the progression as though it were the relative minor,, A with a minor tonic chord. Is that matter of preference or is there a reason for that? Also, you played a C major first inversion, and called it a V6, which I sort of get, but since the g chord isnt using the 5th, why not call it a C/E? Thx.

Indeed, something is not correct. in #10 Peggy plays i-VI-i-v in root positions (a-minor key). When demoing in her DAW, where the v-chord is supposed to be a G chord is given (a VII when seen in a). The midi files contain a file with the shown chord info, but is named i-VI-i-V. So what is it that you want us to take home?

This changes all the roman numerals to reflect that, and you'll see that with the letter "I" as a lower case "i" for the one chord: A minor. The five chord of A minor is usually E major due to the harmonic minor raised 7th: G#. In this case, it is a minor triad: E minor, with the lower case v. This should have been something we prefaced before getting into it. As far as the MIDI file goes, it is incorrect and will be fixed!

Great question. The 6 in this case stands for "first inversion", which has the 3rd of the chord in the bass. The 6 stand for the interval between the bass note "E", and the root note "C". Learn more about inversions here: blog.landr.com/figured-bass-chord-inversions/
I will spare you the intense music theory definition but, what she did with the plugin is raise the pitches. This is termed "transposing" so while the keyboard is playing the note C the sound that you are hearing from it is an Eb. This is something that many orchestra instruments do. For example the Clarinet in A will play the note C (on a music staff) but the note that your ears will hear is an A! That difference in pitch is called the "interval of transposition". The use case is different here only because she is changing the transposition at a whim and normal instruments cannot do that.

Could someone explain what a 6 chord actually is? I’m having trouble figuring out the difference between a 6 chord and a 7th chord. You just wrote C E G A. I thought that was essentially an inverted A7 (dominant).
I love the minor change too. It takes me back immediately to Humpty Dumpty Love Song by Travis, using it as a moody closure to the verse chords. Beautiful
"I6" can be used as notation for the 1st inversion of the I chord: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figured_bass#Numbers I would avoid this notation though, because it kind of clashes with other notations. For example she uses "ii7" in the same progression, which doesn't refer to any inversion but to a tension (a minor ii chord with it's 7 on top). In this context I'd read "I6" as a I chord with it's 6 on top (for example in C this would be c e g a). I suggest writing inversions with shash chords: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash_chord It works fine with actual chords. For example you'd notate the first inversion of C as "C/E", a C major chord but with E in bass. I don't know if it clashes with any notation standards of the number system, but I'd probably read "I/III" or "III/3" as 1st inversion of I, a I chord, but with it's 3rd in bass. edit: Seems like slashes in the number system don't work that way but refer to secondary dominants and such: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_chord Honestly to me that kind of notation feels more like a music theory analysis of the progression and less like a usable chord sheet to play along songs though. Every notation has it's strengths and weaknesses, I guess. I don't know, maybe write just "I (with 3rd in bass)", "I (1st inversion)" or something like that :)

I will spare you the intense music theory definition but, what she did with the plugin is raise the pitches. This is termed "transposing" so while the keyboard is playing the note C the sound that you are hearing from it is an Eb. This is something that many orchestra instruments do. For example the Clarinet in A will play the note C (on a music staff) but the note that your ears will hear is an A! That difference in pitch is called the "interval of transposition". The use case is different here only because she is changing the transposition at a whim and normal instruments cannot do that.

It is a ii V I. But starting on I for two bars and you substitute the second I with a vi
2-5-1 is not really a full progression, just used as part of a fuller jazz progression, as was done here...

You just wrote C E G A. I thought that was essentially an inverted A7 (dominant).

"I6" can be used as notation for the 1st inversion of the I chord: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figured_bass#Numbers
I would avoid this notation though, because it kind of clashes with other notations. For example she uses "ii7" in the same progression, which doesn't refer to any inversion but to a tension (a minor ii chord with it's 7 on top). In this context I'd read "I6" as a I chord with it's 6 on top (for example in C this would be c e g a).
I suggest writing inversions with shash chords: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash_chord
It works fine with actual chords. For example you'd notate the first inversion of C as "C/E", a C major chord but with E in bass. I don't know if it clashes with any notation standards of the number system, but I'd probably read "I/III" or "III/3" as 1st inversion of I, a I chord, but with it's 3rd in bass.
edit: Seems like slashes in the number system don't work that way but refer to secondary dominants and such: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_chord
Honestly to me that kind of notation feels more like a music theory analysis of the progression and less like a usable chord sheet to play along songs though. Every notation has it's strengths and weaknesses, I guess. I don't know, maybe write just "I (with 3rd in bass)", "I (1st inversion)" or something like that :)
