I loved Rogue One. Felt more 'Star Warsy' than the sequels (7,8,9😁) for me. It felt like it had a heart and people who loved and cared for the universe which I didn't get from the further films. For a film that was supposed to be in so much trouble, it turned out to be one of my favourites.

What I like about Rogue One is that it enhances A New Hope. If you watch them back to back, the stakes seem so much higher knowing how the plans got inside R2. The problem with the sequels is that they detract from or contradict the original trilogy

The death of the protagonists gave this movie the emotional impact that set it apart from any other Star Wars movie. The lack of a Jedi presence was also important.

The thing Iiked the most was that it showed a more real side of the REsistance: the one where they executed prisoners and informants like real guerrilas do. Very realistic instead of the super idealised versions of the REsistance we were previously shown.

I've said this before on TH-cam comments, but Jyn's death especially was a gut punch for me. (But in a good way.) I think that she is a great character with such a good story arc. Her death affected me so much precisely because I feel that her story arc makes her seem so deserving of having her story continue. She has the tragic backstory - her mother murdered by the Empire (Krennic), her father taken from her to finish the Death Star, being raised as a child into the proto-rebellion, but getting fed up with that and trying to live a life outside of such things, but still also outside of the law because of how she needed to stay underground, and then finally transforming from being pressed into the Alliance because of her ability to connect to her father and going along with it in hopes of helping him, to actually believing in the Cause and being willing to die for it.
I agree that in some ways, this is the best Star Wars movie of them all. (Star Wars and Empire themselves will always be #1 and #2 for their overall impact and having actually built the world, though.)

I thought Tarkin looked a little cartoony. Not terrible, but notably a little off.
Leia, on the other hand, looked awful. It looked like someone spray-painted her face on a balloon.
It's still a great movie. I just wish they'd had been able to make Leia look human.

@@wbfaulk Lucas, for better or for worse, liked to go back and make changes to the films. If he were still involved with Star Wars, then maybe later on down the line he'd choose to do something like replace the CG renders with deepfake, which can be much more lifelike and convincing than straight-up CGI can.

While I didn't know a lot of these, the inclusion of Red and Gold Leader stood out to anyone who's seen the original. I loved it, as it gave it a more direct tie to the first film. In an interview with Angus MacInnes (Gold Leader) he talks about re-recording his lines and how cool, yet somewhat unsettling it was seeing himself from nearly forty years earlier in a current film. I think we would have seen a lot more from Red Leader had Drew Henley not sadly passed away the year prior. There were some who wanted to see Porkins return, though that might have been overkill. Either way, I do like seeing the previously unheralded side characters get a lot more love in recent years. Heck, Angus MacInnes even has his own table at some conventions now, while sporting a "Gold Leader" hat, which has been popular with fans. :)

I always felt that Rogue 1 was the Grunts movie. Like with Gundam with it's MS08th team, this was about the regular people, not the great and powerful Jedi heroes.
I still like Return of the Jedi the best though, and I suppose that's another issue I have with the sequel series. It's like with Terminator, the ending of the 2nd movie was perfect but all the other films after subverts and contradicts it. I would have been happier with if they adapted Heir to the Empire rather than a Disney version of Dark Empire. The Palpatine story should have been done already, and Heir was the most celebrated story arc of the expanded universe and it was logical to believe that a polity as large as the Empire would fall to factions and warlords, like so many real world governments did after a brutal regime was toppled.

Rogue One is a wonderful Star Wars film. It fits in perfectly with the lore, and remains faithful to it throughout. It tells of a really dark time, the dread of the rising Empire, the awesome menace of the original Death Star, the various Rebel factions, and the sacrifice of the entire Rogue One commando team for the sake of a “new hope” for the ever darkening galaxy. I also love 'Rogue One" and agree it's among the best in the Star Wars franchise, yet to dismiss 'The Force Awakens' as a failed remake of 'A New Hope' is to ignore its huge popularity with movie fans, more than $2 billion in box office and a 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating. If that's a failure, I wonder what is a success.

I think its obvious that Jyn Erso is loosely based on the character Jan Ors from the "Dark Forces" video games.
Michael Giacchino wrote the score in only a month??? That score is fantastic!
I appreciate Disney and Paramount working together to keep each other movies' safe. It indeed was mutually beneficial as each of the movies would have lost a lot of money to each other.
Killing off Cassian and Jyn was incredibly sad and it is, indeed, a missed opportunity to have those characters to continue on in new stories AFTER "Rogue One", but they and their teams' sacrifice is very iconic. I think if they or the team had survived the movie's impact would have been dulled down.

I think Disney missed a huge trick here because Felicity Jones could have been perfectly cast in the sequels as Luke Skywalker's daughter and that would have made a whole better storyline than the convoluted crap we ended up with! As for Rogue One itself, well it was so good it deserves to be made part of the original trilogy (not entirely sure what a 4 movie set is called) and given the full Star Wars opening credits treatment, scrolling text and iconic music and all!

What I loved about rogue one as a newer fan of Star Wars was that the plot didn't rely on a jedi to fix all the problems. Most star wars movies end in pretty unrealistic ways and a jedi being at the centre of all of it. Which is cool because it's a sci fi movie. But Rogue one was by far the most realistic in my opinion and it felt like the heroes were actually risking something, that being their lives and actually ending up losing that.

My only criticism of it was that they spent a good deal of effort introducing some extremely interesting characters, only to kill them all off at the end. It was completely senseless! I can understand killing some of them off, but Donnie Yen's character begged to be used in future projects... it was written THAT well. Even if they wanted to kill off the character, he could have been used to introduce fans to others like him: force sensitive, but not a Jedi.
Disney really screwed up in that respect.

The lack of the opening crawl and no John Williams told me everything I would ever need to know about the Future of Star Wars. Outside of that, it’s an extremely well done tale that fits the existing lore of the Star Wars universe.
I still remember sitting in the theatre asking myself, “Where’s the Crawl?”. Since then, I’ve had nothing but questions about this alternate universe.

The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett are definitely worth it. And the marvel stuff has been pretty great so far as well.
I am the farthest thing from a Sequels fan, and I stand as one of their biggest critics. But Rogue One and anything Filoni and Favreau are a part of is quite wonderful.

Rogue One is one of my favourite Star Wars movies right up there with the OT and I totally agree with GLs opinion on the ST, IMO Rogue One is the only real successful Star Wars movie Disney has done so far, in terms of story and production and the time taken to perfect the story with extensive reshoots, whereas the ST all seemed rushed, copied the OT and were literally just make to recoup a ton of money they spent acquiring Lucasfilm, sacrificing story and the love of the movies in the process, had they taken more time and made as much effort as they did with Rogue One, the ST May have turned out a lot better than the steaming pile of incoherent excrement they ended up presenting to the world.

I'm pretty sure the information put out on Rogue One origins related to the idea being pitched to George Lucas, and him saying no. It was then shelved and Disney said yes. That doesn't make it true. But it sounds like something Lucas would do. His view of Star Wars, and what came out in 77 and 80 are 2 different things.

Did you know that Luke is in the movie but he's in the mountain rocks as rogue one takes off into the air for the first time, you have to look closely but you also have to tilt your screen because he's in the rocks of the mountain, as a Jedi would say you have to open your mind 😮😮😮

People love Rogue One because it sticks the landing. We have reshoots to thank for that. The third act is great and so the film improves as it goes along… but that also blinds a lot of people to how iffy the first and second acts are. The characterizations are initially a mess. Everything with Saw is terrible. Etc.
Rogue One benefits from having some things it has to commit to by film’s end. Compared to JJ Abrams’ black box approach to storytelling, which didn’t build the world or stakes, and then Disney’s fear to commit to Johnson and Trevorrow’s direction with 8 and 9, thus bringing Abrams back to retcon everything… We can see that it’s important to know where you’re going.
And despite its flaws, at least the Duel of Fates movie would have honored previous sequels and trilogies instead of shitting all over them.
