    Speaking about dumb warnings on products, I want to remind everybody that Red Bull was sued in 2013 and had to pay 13,000,000$ because Red Bull doesn't actually give you wings. In Germany the judge would strait up laugh at you.

      I remember this case... I mean I know someone who sued a restaurant because she ate her chili that she ordered in a drive thru and it burnt her tongue. She said since the writing was half rubbed off she did not know it was hot or that she should be warned -_-

      It was a settlement before the case made it into court. Still, 13 million. "“Red Bull settled the lawsuit to avoid the cost and distraction of litigation,” a spokesman said"

    I feel you regarding the door knobs. I hate them as well and love our German door handles. A friend of mine lives in Australia for 5 years now and two or three years ago he bought a flat down there. As soon as he got the legal title for this flat, he texted me, if i‘d be so friendly to go to Obi and pick up a order he just placed and mail it to him. He had ordered handles for eight doors to replace the stupid door knobs.

    • @VladimirMizich
      @VladimirMizich 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The reason why door handles are everywhere in Germany is because any registered building has to pass fire regulations. If there's a fire, door handles are MUCH safer than door knobs, so door handles are pretty much a must in almost all buildings (maybe with some exceptions, I'm not sure) - certainly doors that separate rooms INSIDE a building. The only door knobs I can think of are those on the outside of the entrance door to your house/apartment/office. All doors inside a building usually have door handles.
      In a burning building you can still push down a steaming hot door handle with any object you have in the room, and open the door quite easily - use a stick, a chair, a shoe, a bag, literally anything. If that's a steaming hot door knob on the other hand, you'll have more trouble. You could take a piece of fabric, pee on it, wrap it around your hand, and then try to turn the knob. You might still burn your hand though. You could also try using 2 shoes, one in each hand (or one ON each hand), clasp the door knob and try to turn it. Not sure if that would work, but you might manage.
      You get the idea, door handles are the safer choice in case of a fire scenario, because you're still able to open doors with red-hot handles.

      Hey hey, nice video, and interesting to hear differences between US and GER from a person who has the ability to compare. But I was surprised when you told about the car traffic in Germany. How mad do you drive in the US if you feel safe on German roads? Have you ever taken your way over the Autobahn? Right, Germans do follow the rules a lot, maybe more than other peoples, but as soon as we enter our cars - WE ARE EVIL! :D The more hp a car has, the more evil behavoiur. Ignoring the speed limits, driving much too fast and too close, overtaking at every possible place, no matter if you see 200 m or only 50 m... I thought in US the car traffic would be much more safe as everyone respects speed limits and rules due to high penalties. - Also interesting your point with the door knobs - something we don't even think about that this could be done different than we do in Germany, I think all over Europe. So much more I could comment ;) Thanks for this vid where I could learn a lot about the American point of view.

    Love your video! ! I'm also American, and have lived in Germany for decades because I much prefer the health care system, public transport and so many other things we have here, that the US do not. When I go back there to visit my parents, I feel a bit like a fish out of water, because I'm out of step with the latest news and trends, don't know the procedures for a lot of official stuff, and most especially, don't feel nearly as safe in public as I do here. Plus, I tend to slip Germanisms into my English without being aware of it. That usually gets me some odd looks😁! As much as America is a kind of melting pot, I must say that I have many more good friends from around the world here in Germany than I would probably have ever met had I stayed in the US. Thanks again, and keep up the good work! 😀

    One note on restaurants, though: If you come to a crowded restaurant in Germany, it is likely to happen that the host asks you whether it's okay for you to take seat at a table that is already partially occupied. It's your option to accept or decline, and if the folks at said table don't object, either, you can have a seat there. That also opens up some opportunities to get to know other people whom you wouldn't have met otherwise.

    The strict seperation of customers in restaurants in the US has something to do with the fact that servicepeople do not really get payed by the business. They have to rely on the tip customers give.
    In Germany, evryone employed gets payed by the employer, including the healthinsurance etc. (If you make less then €450 / month, it is slightly different, but you still get payed by your employer). Tips are a real "extra" for sevicepersonell.

      Das ist in der Essenz genau das Gleiche. Denn es gehört schon ein gerütteltes Maß an Dummheit dazu, eine Katze zum Haaretrocknen in den Wäschetrockner zu stecken und dann die Herstellerfirma zu verklagen, dass man nicht ausreichend informiert wurde, wenn die Katze das nicht überlebt. Man verklagt im Grunde nämlich damit die Herstellerfirma dafür, dass sie die die Dummheit ihrer Kunden nicht berücksichtigt hat.
      Was Anderes - als die Dummheit des Kunden - veranlasst eine Herstellerfirma denn sonst, leere Seiten in einer Bedienanleitung mit dem Satz zu kennzeichnen, "This page is intentionally left blank"???

      Some people with small children put plastic slider balls on the door knobs. These have to be squeezed hard to turn the knobs and prevents the children from opening the doors where there might be stairs or hazardous objects. I lived in Europe 20 years ago and I only saw differences with new doors and windows, which there are some in the US too, but everything else seemed about the same as in the US to me. In Italy there were electronic locks I didn't see in Belgium and Belgium has home windows at street level and Italy does not.

      To be fair there are technological solutions to this now that would make separating waste unnecessary. It just costs a lot more money to have a facility that separates the waste so that the company receiving the waste can then recycle it.
      Might be a decent solution for the US though if the general public is less willing to participate.

All the rest could go into one bin but for some things it is probably more practical to separate directry, e.g. you get much more paper into the paper bin if you do not mix it with other stuff.

    Hayley, there are "people" in the USA who spend their lives looking for any easy way to "get over." There are attorneys who will take "any" case.... "SHAKE MANY TREES, SOMETHING MAY FALL OUT" Some states have laws against the abuse of the legal system but not very many. There are entire law firms who only seek out cases where some provider or manufacturer didn't protect an idiot from him/herself.... If you ever purchase a ladder in the USA there will be a warning to not place the feet in cow crap...(someone won a landmark case after being injured after he placed the ladder in frozen cow crap. He was working on the barn early in the morning and when the sun got high enough, the cow crap melted, the ladder slipped and he broke his back. The ladder manufacturer had to PAY BIG... Now all ladders have to carry a written warning.

    If you know the story, behind the hot coffee, it makes sense. They sold coffee so hot, it was nearly boiling, which they did to make sure the coffee would be still warm, when you drive in your car to work or wherever you go. In that case it sadly spilled over half an old ladies body, who got 2nd degree burn, she needed treatment for a year. That coffee had been simply too hot. And she sued just so they would pay her 6 digit invoice for the treatments. As far as I know, they did reduce the temperature to reduce risks and added the line on their cups, which you'll find on German McDonald's cups as well.

  • @dothedeed
    @dothedeed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    9:02 In some coffee shops in America you try to be environmentally friendly and bring your own mug. They make the coffee in the disposable cup and THEN pour it into the mug you brought. They're not allowed to just use your mug - so you still use the same amount of plastic.

    I work at Starbucks in Germany and in the past we were NOT allowed to give out the drink without the lid on top, reasoning was that there were many incidents (in America) were people accidentally spilled drinks on themselves (I guess mostly hot drinks 🤷‍♀️ ) because the lid was missing and therefore sued Starbucks.
    pretty silly in my opinion but now Starbucks Germany is not part of the American Starbucks company anymore so the rules are not the same.
    btw I like how you slipped German words like "Rücksicht" and "pass auf" in between your speech, it was funny 😂

    IIRC peanuts and nut allergies are separate things. (because peanuts aren't technically nuts)
    So in that sense listing nut allergies on peanuts makes sense if it for example is made in a factory that also processes nuts.

  • @ElRackadusch

    • @zvpunry1971
      @zvpunry1971 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nuts and peanuts are sometimes handled at the same places. It may then be possible that a nut ends up in a package of peanuts and vice versa. That is the reason for warnings like "This product contains trace amounts of nuts/peanuts". In most cases there is not much risk, but if something happens, they can say that there was a warning.

    Regarding traffic rules - I had my mind entirely changed regarding 'rules' for traffic when I spent some weeks in England and had to drive there - I did everything wrong I could do, even exiting a roundabout on the motor way the wrong way and suddenly there were cars coming towards me on all lanes - in Germany, you would probably have 5 cars crash into you at a speed of at least 150km/h, and afterwards be beaten up (ok, since you would be dead, it would not matter any more I guess).
    In England, nobody ever even honked at me - they just drove 'ruecksichstsvoll' and gave way - I never saw anybody get upset or the likes.
    Later on our landlord explained us that e.g. on crossroads there simply is no rule how has to get first ( in Germany we have 'rechts-vor-links') - this way everybody drives more reluctant and takes care for the other drivers not to get hit.
    I loved that experience, and ever since I am really annoyed about our abundance of traffic rules on the one hand and German drivers being pissed off for the slightest reason ...

    USA Law system -> think people stupid and so explain everything, like " don't leave the driver's seat to cook coffee during driving"
    Germany Law system -> build on common sense, it's the people fault if they don't think first
    Thats the different

    We do have operable windows here in the US that "kip" which you can operate simultaneously as tilting or swinging with the turn of the handle, but perhaps it's where you've lived in the US and the age of your building. They are definitely installed in new buildings in NY and CA where I've lived.
    Same goes for door handles - in fact I almost never come across door knobs anymore in the US. Even growing up, my house had door handles. Architects almost never specify door knobs because they are hard to grip, and they are illegal in many cases in public buildings.
    There are many differences between germany and america, but these things aren't some of them.

    In regards to the allergy warning, some people don’t know that food processing locations usually process more than one kind of food or contain other ingredients that can induce a severe allergic reaction. So that’s fair. Your product may contain no nuts, but some ingredients may be produced in a location where nuts are also being processed or used. Even though the chance of an allergic reaction may be low, they still want to warn people.

    • @PrometheanFlame
      @PrometheanFlame 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And sometimes they can market a product a certain way, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is 100%. We have a lot of artificial flavors and MSG in our food. So something may say “almond milk,” but for all you know it could be almond flavor or essence. It might seem redundant, but some products are not blatantly honest the way they are marketed. Like how they say something is 0% trans fat. That could just be PER serving. If you have more than one serving you could be consuming a quantifiable amount of trans fats.

    Actually per capita both India and China use nothing close to the resources the US does, and their per capita use is almost negligible in comparison. They just have huge populations so it adds up that way. But the US are indeed champions of resource waste! Close behind are Canadians (and I say that as a Canadian).
