Farmers always have had the discretion to sell their produce either to govt at MSP or to traders. So, the crux was that farmers always used to get atleast MSP either by selling to govt or to trader. However, farmers have never had any means nor will they ever have any means to take their produce to sell in other mandis or states, say from Chandigarh to Bangalore. This is also a known fact that only about 6% of entire produce was being bought by government at MSP and rest everything was sold to traders by farmers.
Secondly, passing of all these laws has to be coupled with the intention of Indian Govt. These laws have also removed the storage limit and abetted hoarding, so as to say, govt has rather made hoarding legal. Without pointing out any specific names, everyone knows which business house(s) are ultimately going to establish their monopolies.

I like the detail that Faye has presented. There are several points that are reasonable, e.g.,
    1. Without procurement + MSP, the farmers are left to the vagaries of supply and demand.
    2. If contract farming is to be allowed, robust contract enforcement is a must.
However, can someone provide any alternatives to procurement + MSP? As per some news sources there are 80 million tons of food grains that has already been procured and is lying in storage. Should this status continue? Should more wheat and rice be procured? How can this be tapered off? Should it be reduced? Can farmers be nudged to produce other crops? Can there be oilseed procurement + MSP instead?
I don't think it is an easy choice one way or the other. There will always be pressure from taxpayers on any government to reduce this reliance on procurement+MSP that provides stability to farmers.

As an individual who has worked and gained 25 years of work experience - objective of any activity is to be efficient and effective. The whole narrative changes when it becomes conspiratorial, attacks individuals on being misled and sheer force of authority being used to discredit the others POV.
Why are we not seeing the discussions based on each line of the old / new / positive and possible acts and move forward by the government.
Their intention is being questioned and rightly so because of the past actions and behavior.

Another thing is, that many of us, who respect you the most, haven't been seeing much of you these days, especially around Covid19 times, and that's quite a disappointment. The wide gap - between honest, pure journalism with mannerisms, and loud raucous, raunchy, playing by the gallery kind of journalism is widely evident. You play the former keeping in mind the dignity of your profession, and simultaneously respecting the sensibilities of viewers like us. You have a role to play in society serving who also form a large chunk, and are in fact growing disillusioned quietly and quickly!

Government buys maximum rice and wheat for FCI at MSP in Punjab and Haryana. So in these two states role government mandi is more dominant than any other states thats why these people are protesting to save mandi. I'm from a farmer family based in Gujarat.... I was lucky I got a chance to study in Canada and also explore other countries around the world.... Farmers in western countries are making millions and they work through a system that Indian government want's to implement.
There can be flaws in the current bill that the government has passed but I see this as a very necessary and effective step Indian government has taken and in the long run will help farmers to earn way more money then they are earning right now...
Farmers who are protesting against this laws are not seeing the benefits they will be getting in the long run.... It looks like they want to be dependent on the middle men and govt. subsidies but the current bill allows them to free themselves and grow more....
Also many people are commenting on how this bill will take away there right to go to court in case of dispute but the truth is this bill provides a proper legal framework that is being created to protect the farmers of India and not the big private companies....
Everyone who thinks that this bill is for the benefit for Big Private Corporations are wrong. Yes, Big Corporation will be benefited from this bill but farmers are the one who will be availing the actual benefit from this bill..

Only 6% of the farmers get the msp,so 94% sell at a higher price or price below the msp. Mainly the farmers from Punjab gets the benefits of msp.

    • @ashutoshdevgire5591

See that's the problem, you don't know actual thing.punjab and haryana farmers sell their product at msp,but they are not only beneficiary.other state's farmers also benefit msp, through state procurement scheme.when there is distress sell, and private sector don't procure and price fall, states intervene and procure at msp.

  • @daksh4463

I appreciate your journalism. Its clear and away from the andhbhakt and anti-national debate that keeps happening on most of the news channels. I admire your take on farm laws but being a student of economics I have a very different point of view. On the surface level concerns of farmers seem genuine. However, economics doesn't work like that. I do not say that open markets are perfect but they are many times better than regulated markets. History has shown this. First concern of farmers is about cartelization of private sector. Take example of other commodities that are not regulated, better take example of milk. There is a big private sector involvement but its flourishing. Second is the concern of bumper crop. Farmers, especially in Punjab, a semi-arid region, are heavily dependent on rice and wheat. Rice has led to groundwater depletion on alarming rate. At the same time, it has been found that fruits and vegetables that are grown on only a small proportion have given more proportional income to farmers. However, bad infrastructure to store perishables has discouraged this trend. Prices (at least should) depend on demand and supply. Crop diversification and better infrastructure, that stablizes supply, will help farmers realize better rates. Ofcourse companies would make money and if they have huge margins, attractiveness of sector will lead to other companies jumping in. This creates competition and helps on both seller and buyer side. Government is already overflowing with grains and doesn't know what to do with it. FCI behaves as a zombie organization. Third is the dispute settlement done by govt. officials. Not allowing someone to go to courts is something I find astonishing. For me, it should allowed. Its is everyone's right in a democracy.

First time I’ve visited this channel. Fantastic clarity and now I have a good idea of the issue. You are indeed correct that while the headlines of the proposals seem logical and rational the devil is indeed in the details. Even here in the US the large digital monopolies are dictating terms and wiping out their competition. Indian government should ensure that small farmers are not exploited by private monopolies.
BTW I’ve liked this video and subscribed to this channel.
