Twenty years or so ago, I contacted Mr. Hosford about my ex-husband and brother and I loving "Salinas." He sent three 45s with a lovely note. They don't make 'em like Larry Hosford anymore.
Some of my earliest musical memories involved Larry and my brother Dan McCormick. They formed their duo on the lawn of 12 Oak Street behind the old Fosters Freeze in Salinas, where as I understand it, they started to attract the girls from high school by playing and singing the popular folk songs of the day---Late 50's. I shared a bunk bed with Danny and I vividly remember many an evening entering the bed room to the music of The Kingston Trio and the Limelighters, to name just a few. I have to believe my appreciation for music was born there. And of course Larry went on to achieve some fame. My brother Dan is still an accomplished guitarist and banjo player-5 string I believe. Thanks to both for the gift of music.
Good ol' Larry.... it's been 30 years or more since I've seen him. Glad he's doing well. He used to wear out that stage at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. Never did figure out why he didn't hit the big time... good songs, good sounds, good band. Even the great Danny Gatton played in Lary's band for a few months. Let me tell you, that group rocked the house.
Larry was a little coarse with his party manners sometimes. He had a little mis-adventure in Hollywood at a big time producers house. And that was the end of it. He made some good records there but he insulted the wrong guy. Hollywood is a small town.
I was born in Salinas, and grew up on the eastside of town, Alisal to be exact. But I didn't know people from Oklahoma lived there too. I know in Yuma, AZ there is a neighborhood called "OkieTown" do to heavy migration of folks from Oklahoma. Anyways, great song. Makes me miss my home town!
I had the pleasure of opening up for Larry and his fine band a few times back in the mid-late 70's ... love his songs and his sense of humor. He had killer players with him back in those days too.
I LOVE this song! I heard it in high school in 1975! Loved it and told my dad, He said, "Oh I know Salinas. I was about to be shipped to Japan and stationed nearby.....walked into a diner and who was there? My best friend from Boston area and Your Uncle Paul who married your mom's sister!!! I wanted to LIVE there.....
P.S. I went to live in Gueneville after high school , married , moved to San Fransisco, then convinced my young husband and me (a teen!) to take me to Salinas. We loved it. 'cept he was older, God Rest His Soul , and had a corporate postition w/ Delta Airlines. Me, I liked to dance! (at that age so LOVE this guy and twirled around the dance floor many times to this song. Bless you, Larry Hosford....
love listening to this song on juke box in a little bar called the place on alisal street. around the 80's...drinking beer, playing pool with frankie salas, tony, raul ortiz, les loman, danny rameriz and many other. god blessed the alisal boys....
I live just up the road from Salinas. It used to be a real nice little town of hard working people, now its kinda scary. But I still go there from time to time. Mostly on my way to Monterey.
What a great way to start my day at the office..I used to see this band weekly for at least 12 very pleasurable years and I miss them so much but thank God for you tube where I can travel back to memories spurred on by the lovely music itself of my best years of music and joy.....
I think Larry was a member of the E-Types back in the sixties. “If you sent all the Okies and Mexicans home you’d have nothin’ to eat”. That little band there is pure country.
Fucking a straight what a song! MyPa was born in Gilroy raised up in San Juan Bautista California. Both sides of my family came here during the Depression just a bunch of California Okies how true mr. Hosford song is
When I was a kid in the late seventies this guy used to busk next to the Cooperhouse in Santa Cruz on Pacific avenue. With all the potheads blowing smoke around him.
Larry was on one stage, my band was on t’other at the first Garlic Festival. Dang right he was good. We shared a stage once years later..we both had some Salinas connections and we both wrote about it. I always liked his song better. Dave Younger
Sorry that I never did hear Dave Younger and the Younger Brothers Band. But I did do inventory every coupla months for Southland Corp. at the Morgan Hill 7-11. I remember your sweet sister running the store. Patty ¿right? Running the store & not the story; you'd have been running the stories 😏. (And Yinger: ¿how is she?)
@@alexthemole2987 that’s right. That also means we probably met once or twice. Anybody that didn’t think my sister Patti was (and still is) an Angel woulda been plum insensible. Thanks for the memory…I never knew that our paths crossed way back then.
@@barntapes3414: Oh I just edited my misspelling. Then I scrolled down & saw that you replied. Whoops. and thanx. Yeah we probably did meet. I didn't last more than a year or two doing that gig: I couldn't manage to count everything in each store and do so in Southland's rapid time requirements.
Brother, I have my own feelings about those crooks at Southland. I’d rather talk about the truly great Larry Hosford. In about 50 years hanging around the central coast music scene I never heard a bad word about Larry. I regret that we never got to get together for a guitar pull or bull session, but it seemed like we were always working. It’s strange now…Larry’s gone and I’m the same age as old people.
California in the seventies. " If you you gotta fight one bean you gotta fight the whole burrito!" That was a common saying in the seventies. Does anyone remember " the Road Ranger" who used to rescue disabled drivers and hitch hikers on highway seventeen back in the seventies? He was from Watsonville. He'd pick up hitch hikers like me and ask me if I had a joint to smoke.
It's on his CD, "High On Livin" aound 2005. I mixed it. It was originally released as a single in the 70s but Larry and I took the master tapes and remixed that song and "Hitchhiking in Guyana" and added them to the "High On Living" album.
@@jochapatwell... Jochapat, amongst my lp's in storage is a little 45 with those two songs on either side. So Thanx. I'll have tô look for the High On Livin record you helped make.
