I'm from Latin América (where the dub was pretty good) so this is my first time hearing the names they used in the english dub and I'm completely cracking up

Neptune and Uranus. Also, in this show, being cousins wouldn't stop shipping. I mean, the Kinomotos met when the husband was the wife's high school teacher, and Tomoyo's mother Sonomi Daidouji had a... crush on Nadeshiko Kinomoto, Sakura's mother, and you guessed it, her cousin.

Wut? 90% of Cardcaptor Sakura is Sakura crushing on Yukito hard and Tomoyo having a pretty transparent girl crush on Sakura. I remember shipping Sakura and Eriol when I was a kid. When they revealed Sakura’s Dad was her mom’s professor I remember thinking “wait is that legal?” 🤣 Philippine dubbed version was close to the original compared to the US version
Not completely sure if it is accurate to actual Japanese laws, but in the show, it was illegal that he was dating the student and the school told them to stop their relationship, but they were in love, so instead, Sakura's parents got married while she was still in high school because now they are not dating, they are legally married therefore, a loophole. Which I do know in Japan, legal marrying age for a female is 16 (18 for male).
Yup, Tomoyo loved Sakura so much that she wouldn't tell her about her feelings for fear of making her emotional life more difficult. What with her confused feelings for Yukito and later Syaoron, on top of her magical hero girl duties. Age of consent in Japan was/is quite low, I think at the time it was unofficially 12. I think it was upped to 14 in recent history. I asked the same question back then and eventually looked it up. of course, the 2 examples in CCS were suggesting that they are simply dating (no hanky panky) and are engaged to be married when they reached the proper age (for japan at the time)
Having read the manga and seen the original, I think 90% is an over-exaggeration. Maybe 20-30% It just seems like more because fangirls were obsessed with the relationships, it's not so present in other stories for the same audience, and also, it's CLAMP. X has more relationships and stuff in it, but it gets considered an end of the world series... (It's really about fate and all the relationship stuff between the main three characters... oh.. and subaru and his lover). I mean CCS has about as much as Angelic Layer.....(and all these series are CLAMP)
@@lostnumbr Actually, it's 13 BUT it's simply a guideline, meaning no prefecture can't set it below 13. Generally, and in practice, they just set it between 16 - 18.
Youo got to admit though. They were awesome openings. I much prefer Yu-gi-oh!'s, Beyblade, Pokemon, Cardcaptors, and even One Piece's openings over the original opening.
So what AMV's are a million times better than just listening to music without the beautiful visuals. And like if you're going to make that comment maybe not make it on what is probably their absolute best opening lyricwise, at least if it's not number one it's definitely in the top five I think.
Does anyone else remember the time CLAMP took a bunch of the characters from Cardcaptor Sakura and put them in an actual shonen called Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle?
yeah it was the greatest thing for me at the time until i realised that it's the same characters but different dimension but i still watched and loved the anime as it was
That anime clearly needs a reboot (and that Manga a reprint in Germany...). I mean, we got Tsubasa World Chronicle too as a sequel but it still has no satisfying ending
Read the manga if you're interested in finishing the story! The Manga is LONG, but so worth it. I really hope they reboot the anime, but I highly doubt they will ever be able to finish it without a looot of funding behind it.
@@toriacrouse2449 Yeah he had a crush on both but in the second season he realizes the reason he was attracted to Yukito is because of his magical powers (the same was Sakura had a bit of a crush on the new teacher with her magical powers)
and then Touya ends up with Yukito Edit: Honestly, i love the series, and you have NO IDEA how much i love the latin america spanish dub its a masterpiece WITHOUT CENSORSHIP Touya and Yukito are so fucking gay for each other, AND I LOVE IT
Ah... This was a REALLY adorable love triangle. It made bisexual relationships not weird for me. I was just like "heh Sakura and Li are fighting over Yukito". I love how they always compliment how much of a glutton Yukito is.
When I started watching the Japanese versions of anime that I watched the dubs of on TV when I was a kid, CCS was the first show I went for since Cardcaptors was one of my favs as a kid. Even if this dub isn't super good as an adaptation of its Japanese counterpart, I still can't help but have a soft spot for it. In fact, I still have my Clow book with all the cards in it, haha.
I find it very weird growing up in México that all the content we got came only after being in the US for a number of years, but Cardcaptor Sakura was dubbed straight from the Japanese version (the Latin American version of Catch you catch me is iconic) and somehow kept the obvious age difference between love interests and even the homosexual relationships... It was marketed heavily both to boys and girls with the themes of "love" and "growing up" being central and it's hard to see a 20ish anime fan that doesn't know the lyrics of Catch you catch me...
I watched a video talking about this. One of the big factors was funding, censoring takes time and money so they didn't touch anything, also in the US they always try to sell toys and for that the cartoons had to be "as safe as posible"
It's so weird that they changed every single name except "sakura" lol. Like why didn't they just go all the way and change her name to samantha or something
@@marissaurias5116 Exactly, and 'every expense was spared' when they occasionally did edit text. There's a scene where Sakura is looking at her Mother's old calendar in the dub somewhere (when she sees her Great-grandfather/Grandfather's birthday is soon?)... The shot of the calendar page itself appears for just 2seconds, but it's plain they hurridly edited the frame to English in Microsoft Paint, _very badly_ . Some copies mercifully leave the Japanese in, but if you find the right (wrong?) copy, it's a truly hideous shot.😬
Weirdly a lot of “hack dub” anime’s weirdly do that sometimes like Yugi and Kaiba kept their names in YuGiOh and in fact the only protagonist to have an altered name in the franchise was Jaden from GX
Yeah, in latin america we got pretty lucky. Anime was really big over here, we got pretty decent dubs, and the censorship wasnt has heavy. If I recall correctly the gay undertones were still present, and we got the full series plus the movie dubbed. It was pretty great. It was funny seeing cardcaptor sakura before evangelion on air tv every afternoon.
i used to watch it on cartoon network because i didn't have the anime channel, i mean, i don't know if the anime channel aired everywhere in latin america, BUT THERE WAS AN ANIME CHANNEL. i will forever and ever have a crush on Toya, i just adore him
I'd say CCS wasn't censored at all here in Latin America. You can check some clips like this one: twitter.com/alexnelo/status/1115362204499554304. They made no effort to hide anything in the dub. I am pretty surprised! Most of us don't remember that because as kids we might not have found it weird. Sailor Moon's Uranus and Neptune weren't censored either in the Latin American dub. I would say most censorship issues in our area were in cases when dubbers had to work with content that was already botched by 4Kids or other USA distributor (see Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.).
The same applies in Portugal, nothing was censored, Toya and Yukito's relationship remains the same, Tomoyo's girl crush is the same. And this also applied to Saint Seya and Dragonball blood and violence remains. And we even got the naked final episode of Sailor Moon and Neptune and Uranus are still soul mates.
In Latin America pretty much every anime with the exception of Pokemon, Sonic X and the second half of Yu-Gi-Oh was basically the japanese version in spanish, with spanish covers for opening and endings included, so Cardcaptor Sakura was my thing
My dude! I was just thinking that. I think I was lucky to have been able to watch all the anime in Mexico. No censorship and we got the original intros and songs.

Another part that got cut was Li having a crush on Julian and how he and Sakura are fighting over him. The plot then backed backpedals like crazy, but it did happen.

i wouldn´t call it backpedaling, syaoran developed feelings for sakura through the show and started feeling conflicted about it,it really took him sometime to sort out his feelings, is not like he one daywake up and was like "im not gay anymore, i like man no more i like women women women "
Tbf, Syaoran got over his crush on Yukito because he realized he was in love with Sakura. Even if you ignore the explanation on magic moon pheremones (as I choose to do), he spent a whole episode literally in crisis mode because he realized he was in love with Sakura when he thought he was in love with Yukito, and Yue made him realize he actually was in love with Sakura, and wasn't meant to be with Yukito. It's not really backpedaling, my dude's still bi af.
TBH I caught on that Li liked Julian even when watching the old dub as a child. I didn't even know they tried to hide it until many years later, so to me they failed miserably XD
When I was young in the 90s I always considered cardcaptors a girl's show and as a girl I watched it I never once even thought of it as a boy show 😂😂😂 I always kind of looked at as a cooler more edgier version of sailor Moon So in my opinion big fail on trying to market it to boys 😂
@@zlcoolboy Lol I wasn't the only one 😆 what were they thinking did they really think they can turn a girl show into a boy show and people would just go along with that😂
I love cardcaptor Sakura. As a young black boy, it taught me that little girls could be the bravest heroes. And a good stories don't have to be "boy" stories or "girl" stories. Great vid
Right on dude, absolutely right. Sakura is one of my heroes. She's a great example of a strong female character. She is both girly and athletic. She's courageous and kind. Even when she's acting a bit wimpy, you aren't annoyed with her, you want to cheer her on, because that's what Sakura would do. I was so jealous of Sakura's athletic ability that I actually took up long distance running and rollerblading.

NGL while the homosexual relationships/crushes being cut sucks, I am more than happy they cut the age gap relationships. Just so much gross I cannot get over it why is this in my wholesome magical girl show!?
@@denniswilliams6519 Yeah like the stuff with Sakura and Yukito is one thing because it’s a one-sided crush that a lot of kids tend to have and eventually Sakura finds love with a more age appropriate boy anyway (although YMMV on the idea on underage romance in general) ,but stuff like Rika and Terada makes it so jarring that I have to put trigger warnings when recommending the show to my friends when it’s otherwise very cute and hyper femme. Like I love Clamp, I really do but they are something of a “problematic fave” due to how pro-shippery (for lack of a better word) some of their work can get at times
Thank you. I'm glad someone mentioned this. And it's more concerning when they mention she transfered districts in clear card. Which seems like the school covered it up. And Sakuras dad was her mom's teacher. C.L.A.M.P. has a worrying tendency to include taboo relationships in their works and passing them off as normal. And the fact that their works are targeted at audience too young to understand that is even more worrying

Yeah it looks fantastic for an anime from 1997, it has an insanely cool art style with harsh lighting and really intense fights like it’s some kind of shonen series! And the slice of life keep themselves interesting too with Sakura maturing over the course of the series which is unlike so many other romantic shows. She actually gets over her crush on Yukito and grows up, and then Yukito goes on to, believe it or not, date her brother! Yay for gay rep, Cardcaptor Sakura was progressive for the 90’s!
Most animes in the US suffered huge alterations and censorship. Sailor Moon, Yo yo Hakusho, Samurai X, Dragonball... the list goes on. In Latin America and Brazil, I'm lucky that the studios decided to just dub the original material. And the dubbing was really good
That the romance is muted in the dub is a gross understatement. Sakura and Lee are not just rivals for the cards, but rivals in the pursuit of Julians affections. They cut out Lees crush on Julian entirely in the dub, which made him a bit too two dimensional as a character.
This is false. Li has a crush on Sakura and Sakura herself began to develop feelings for Li later on. It was implied that they became a couple when Li returns from abroad.
I saw the French version. I think the only thing I found weird about it was the opening song they chose. If you're curious, search around for it on youtube. It's by this French (I think) popstar and, well, it's pretty surreal.
Eh. More like Lee kinda promised Meilin that they would get married in the future if he didn't find anyone that he liked more, but still wasn't having Meilin's affection.
I was thinking that too. A girl main character who wore cute pink outfits in every episodes, with plenty of side stories focusing on cooking, friendships, and self-improvement. I guess cause there's that idea that boys tend to buy more toys. (But as Billiam pointed out, the toys were plushies and tarot, not exactly the traditional boy stuff) I'm glad that today cartoons they emphasis that boys and girls can like the show regardless.
To be fair Cardcaptor Sakura as well as most anime in the 90s kinda had a shōnen like art style to it you could throw in a spiky haired dude in the show and you would easily mistake it for a shōnen anime Animators in the 90s didn't have a lot of animation technology like today to make the anime look brighter and fluffier like every Shoujo anime in existence
There’s actually a reason as to why Syaoran was always blushing when he was close to Yukito. I think it was because their magic energy is similar (due to Yukito also being a guardian of the clow cards) he felt attracted to him. It wasn’t romantic attraction tho, it was more like “this person has similar interests as me” kinda attraction if that makes sense.
NotAName well yeah, but it’s not a crush. While it is kinda treated like that, it ain’t a crush. Op was saying that he had a crush, on that it was treated like that.
This was my favorite back in the day. At my elementary school they would have a period every year where they'd sell books in the cafeteria during lunch. I picked up a book about Cardcaptors and read it a million times. The show was what had me finding TH-cam in its infancy, as someone had posted the fantranslated Cardcaptor Sakura anime there. Only thing I ever disliked was the relationship between Sakura's one friend and their teacher. A harmless childhood crush is one thing. Having an *adult* man *reciprocate* those feelings and have the story say it's okay because it's a "pure" love (he's not attracted to her physically) is another thing entirely.
You and I lived the same childhood! I still have one of those books, the one on the “Power” Card episode! You also unlocked a memory for me that CCS was part of my discovery of TH-cam in its beginning days as well. Those fan-translations are what made me realize how different the story actually was in its US butchering. I ended up collecting all of the Master of the Clow manga in high school 😆
Dubbers: "Hey, you know this show, one of the most iconic Shōjo series ever created? Yeah, let's remove half of it, poorly adapt the second half and market it as a shōnen" 10/10 idea right there
It wasn't dubbers. it was actually a licensers. so because cardcaptors was a licensed by WB they changed everything just like how 4kids licensed Tokyo mew mew, one piece and magical doreime and changed everything. It all depends on the studio

Watching Cardcaptors in English was weird. If you watched it in North America, you only got half of the 70 episodes that were made. If you watched it in Canada or England, you got the Full 70 episode run, though still heavily edited. There was an uncut English dub of the show shown on Animax, and I think this is the dub that Netflix currently has. The theme song for the English dub is super nostalgic.
Abhi Rao Omg, I’m so happy Netflix added the animax version of that, I grew up watching the animax version, and i’m so grateful, CCS has probably one of the best anime score, sometimes I have the ost on shuffle, some of them are so soothing

I'm about halfway through Cardcaptor Sakura and I'm loving every second of it, so glad I jumped into this series. That being said, Kero's voice has me losing it right now because he sounds like a little gremlin who's going to try and sell me bionicle and gogurt
Oh careful now, next you'll say literally anything made by 4kids is/was good. And that's not true. They are evil incarcerate. (Yes that's hyperbole but only slightly)
Omg i didn't knew about this, what the hell were they thinking? I grew up with the latin america one and they kept all of the original material, maybe they changed words to make the romance between touya and yukito (Julian and tori in this weird one) less direct but it was so obvious This show is not that much about the magic but the characters and love, there's a ton of romance and the first time syaoran appears he thinks he's in love with Yukito when it ended up bein just stuff about his powers , but it made me think a lot when i saw it, back when my family wasn't so open about lgbt issues, sakura card captor is such a lovely show is pure is funny and it gaves good vibes, the thing that hurts me the most is that they changed the openings, because the originals are SO good! To everyone who grew up with that dub and didn't saw the original material you guys should, even if some details aged a bit badly (mostly with some of the couples) the series is such a good trip and here in latin america is super huge, going to the point where fans asked a dub for the 2018 season and they're gonna do it! I was very confused throughout this video. I never watched this version because I'm currently watching the series on Netflix, so I'm watching the translated version that came straight from Japan (with all the original names). I was hoping that you would talk about the weird relationship Sakura's mother had with her friend and how Sakura's mom married her teacher at 16. I also didn't notice until now but Sakura is doing the exact same things as her mom when she was alive. History is literally repeating itself. Edit: I’m now farther into the series and can confirm that it gets weirder. WHY WAS HER BROTHER DATING A WOMAN SOO OLD. I’m just really confused on this series, is this how people really act in Japan?
Aside from the weird romance shit, I can confirm it's an AMAZING show. Just don't watch the dub. In the beginning (season 1) the romance got weird af but as soon as season 2 begins, its much better. S3 was just the best seeing Syaoran so flustered around Sakura and Tomoyo shipping them every episode is just amazing.
kalyan hukumathirao It’s not your fault but I think that I’m not going to watch the show anymore now that I have that information. I thought Syaoran was a closet gay, that’s why he didn’t like his fiancée very much? what happened to the guy he liked? I absolutely HATE romance in a show especially ships, I don’t think I can watch anymore if they just start shipping random people together like Sakura and Syaoran.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the entire show was meant to end with Sakura and Syaoran being together (also Syaoran is bi, he barely tries to hide that). Both of them are supposed to be the rivals who end up together- Meiling is an anime only addition and I'm not entirely sure why she was added other than to stretch out the anime, since the anime has a ton of filler in general. If you don't like romance, the show is only gonna have more of it going forward. As for the creepy age gap relationships, yeah I can't really defend that like, at all... all I can say is that thankfully CLAMP has moved past taking "love is love" so literally and they completely wrote out the relationship between Sakura's classmate and her teacher in the newer sequel. That, and Mizuki was in high school when she was dating Touya (and Sakura's dad was in his early 20s when he got together with her mom), so it's not _as_ bad as it could've been.
@@トマトスープ-u5n Nah, since you ain't gonna watch the show I'm just gonna tell you everything now. Basically Syaoran threw his so called "fiancé" out the window was because she never really existed in the mangas. She was just added to make the Syaoran and Sakura thing. The reason why Syaoran wasn't gay and was attracted to the other older boy was because that boy was some sort of magical being. Syaoran couldn't sense it at the time and thought that he was having a crush, when in reality he was just attracted to the guy's magic power. CLAMP has this kind of thing for "older boy X younger girl" ships so, if you are a fan of them ur gonna have to face more. Meiling (fiancé) was just added to make the ship go forward more by the end of the show. If you don't like the teacher X student thing I don't think you would like the manga where the teacher just straight up PROPOSES to the 10 yr old girl. If you do change your mind, just skip to around episode 20-25 since the weird teacher stuff is removed around there. There is still hints of it, but ya know, not in your face. Clear card (sequel of CCS) takes out the teacher's lover (Rika) and they also remove the teacher (Terada) Clear card if u ask me was just pretty useless, watch it if you feel bored, but that's all to it. Mainly Syaoran and Sakura episodes. It's cute seeing them together but honestly, there isn't any plot progression at all.
One change from the original manga I fully support is the fact one of sakura's classmate's is no longer dating her teacher. It was hinted at in the anime version, eradicated in the dub.
Yeah, I can definitely say I had no problem with the dub taking those liberties. Japan's got some weird interests and I'm glad those particular elements didn't carry over to the dub.
So yall want a fun story of anime butchering from New Zealand? they didn't air the last part of Digimon Tamers, they left it in the middle of the final battle with D-reaper. ....until two months later when they made a whole episode of the kids show surrounding it deciated to finding the "lost episode" . While i hate how the heavily edited the show, the original CardCaptors dub (Canadian) was the superior dub IMO - maybe that's because it's what i grew up with but i liked that they made them sound a little older/more mature. I had issues getting into the sub due to the very young high pitch voices
Cardcaptor Sakura (the Japanese version) was a great adaption of the original manga. They actually added a lot of great new content that gave some incentive to read the manga as well as watch the anime. The new content added didn't change the overall story or anything as well so it was still a very faithful adaption. There were some great new Clow Cards added, including the three that you mentioned you liked: The Time, The Shot and The Dash. Meiling was also an anime only character, but I think she was a great addition to the show. Also, in the anime they gave Syaoran some of his own Clow Cards, which didn't happen at all in the anime but was still a fun thing to add. Ccs was a great adaption of the manga, it's a shame that Cardcaptors didn't translate it more faithfully.
Really do remember becoming a huge fan of Meiling after warming up to her - even if it took a while, I'd say~ You're right though - I guess one problem I felt about CCS-anime is that latter half (Sakura Card-arc) felt teensy bit sluggish in pacing at times, perhaps due feeling more filler-y, which can be felt on the recurring characters up to that point next to newly introduced ones (Eriol, Suppie and Nakuru).
@@KonaKonaKaabisteru The Sakura Card arc actually feels like it has more overarching plots going on for me. The mystery about Eriol and the new development between Sakura and Syaoran were great. Also, the second movie was a satisfying ending to everything.
The reason for that is because Clamp themselves took heavy part on the adaptation. They didnt just license the manga to some animation studio no npo no, they went to oversee the production of this show and because of that even with the changes made, it keepa the spirit of the manga intact. Its of the greatest examples of why creators should take part on adaptations of their own works.

I watched CC as a 5-year-old. It was my first anime and remains to be one of my favorites, despite my preferred genres being shonen anime. I had no idea it was marketed towards boys. I watched it a second time but as the original Japanese dub. I did so because the new Clear Card season was happening. Clear Card is kinda lackluster (and albeit shallow) compared to the original. And Kero is my homeboy, too.
CC was made to appeal to boys as well as girls. People shit all over CC because it's not like the original bur it's pretty good if you look at it as it's own thing. I like to think of CC as an adaptation rather than a dub since so much was changed. Kero is indeed the best.
Madison never posted her videos online; she kept them for her-own private viewing pleasure, gushing over Sakura, loaning tapes to Kero so that he, likewise, could gush over his-own "heroic" stature...
I grew up with the Latin American Spanish dub which was a way more faithful adaptation. English dubs in the 90s-2000s were so problematic with their localization I swear!
Oh gawd, just like the 4kids dub of one piece, Yu-Gi-Oh (basically anything anime) they can die in a 🔥. Mew Mew power is really horrid though. Much like Netflix's " glitter force" aka pretty pretear they gutted the Japanese aspects as much as they possibly could (notice how Tokyo was removed from the title) they removed the "eco" plot of the villians for some generic bad guy BS and just made everything worse than the original.
Its super weird and annoying how it got censored the relationship between the both boys, it was super sweet, and didn't show anything explicit. Could help a lot of boys who were trouble accepting that they like other boys
The thing is there's a lot more censorship happening in CCS, and it's not just about the homosexual tension. There's a CLEAR pedophilia relationship in CCS too, where one of Sakura's classmate (who is clearly under 10 yo) has a relationship with their teacher who is clearly 20+ yo, and CLAMP make sure to show that the feelings were mutual. Not to mention Tomoyo who clearly have a romantic feeling towards Sakura too. All and all, I think this adaptation is why CLAMP is now very strict on their no censorship policy. If anyone wants to adapt their works, CLAMP is making sure the adaptation won't be censored in anyway. And if the company that adapting their works cannot agree to that, they won't let their works be adapted at all.
Tbh, I never cared for the first cousin relationship (I mean it is wrong, but it is better than sibling relationship). But the teacher one, sure sakura's parent had a student teacher relationship. But at least their age were more closer to rika and her teacher relationship.
@@goonerOZZ I do wonder how much of their works features pedophilic relationships? Cause I don't see any lost in not adapting their works with clear pedophilic relationships. Not when the West is currently in turnoil with the amount "Pedophilia is normal and natural for men" professors walking around. www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/10948796/Paedophilia-is-natural-and-normal-for-males.html

There's a manga that was either the prequel to or spin off of card captor sakura. Nothing to do with the cards, and all the characters from the CCS cast are either teens or young adults from a parallel world. At one point, the main cast of that manga run into the card captor cast while visiting alternate realities I think. It's been so many years since I read the manga I can't remember the details exactly. But I enjoyed the story more from the manga than I did from CCS. Edit: it's called tsubasa reservoir chronicles, and it's an ambitious project that tied a lot of the clamp manga characters into a single shared universe. Most notably xxxholic maintains a prominent presence throughout the story.
Cardcaptor Sakura is my favorite anime. I usually bring it up in conversation about gay representation in 90s anime with friends. I also just really adore the characters. I just wish clear card, the reboot, would get another season
When I was a kid waching the Spanish version, I was super confused if Sakura brother and Yukito was a real thing or just my imagination. I was small so no idea about world yet. 🥰😋

If you ever get to watch CLEAR, Madison/Saionji is pretty upfront about the filming Sakura thing. She's even got drones and making Cereberus a living drone.
I had forgotten the "her website" conceit for the dub... it's just intricate home video in the original. For herself to watch later in her home theatre. Much easier to keep a secret

Hooo boy we're talking about one of my favorite shows time to break in a wall of text I didn't watch Card Captors growing up as a kid, but god it was one of the first animes I ever watched in full. Growing up we had all the Sailor Moon VHS tapes, but like half of them were in french for some reason. I'm a guy, so "girly shows" were embarrassing to talk about in elementary school so I just stuck to talking about Digimon. I always watched those tapes with my older sister though, I still have them today. In 6th grade I joined my middle school's anime club because they advertised Sailor Moon on one of the posters. There, I was introduced to anime forums and all sorts of the popular shows back in 2011. On one of those forums I read about Card Captors, and decided to watch it. I was 12, and I vividly remembering watching Card Captors off of those TH-cam channels that broke the episodes into like 3 minute sections - at 14 I watched CCS and felts kinda cheated in the end. The plot was good, different but good. I didn't hate the dub, I still don't, but the original seemed so much deeper and emotional. I kinda view them as different shows completely. Card Captor is always gonna be something special to me because it was something that introduced me to a whole new world and new online friends that are still around today. When Clear Card got released, I knew I had to rewatch all of the original CCS first and I got that same nostalgic feeling you get watching childhood cartoons. It's not the same nostalgia I get from Sailor Moon, but it sure is gonna have a special place in my heart - dub and sub alike. I'm glad to hear you're gonna be watching CCS in full now, but be sure to check out Clear Card too if you're interested! It adds onto the original plot and gives a lot of good character interactions that the original show left somewhat unfinished.

I LOVED Cardcaptors, and for the longest felt like this version was a fever dream. Glad to know other people enjoyed it and that it actually existed lol
When I was young I didn't even think twice about the Japanese names, I loved that most Latin American dubs where translated from the Japanese original. Greetings from Tijuana !
I didn't watch Cardcaptor Sakura until middle school and by then (~2007/8) it was pretty easy to find fansubbed versions on anime streaming sites, which is where I found it :)
I remember watching the CITV broadcast of the show as a kid, and I fell in love with it. It was marketed pretty differently over here than the US, in fact I heard that despite the US and UK having the same dubbing cast, different edits to the visuals and dialogue were made for the US, UK, Australia and Canada, with the UK version being the most elusive
@@Seatux We keep the original ones mostly. For example...Tomoyo is still named Tomoyo. Not Madison. But, for example, in Digimon we use Tai instead of Taichi, even tho the translation is direct from the original (No Digirap. We did have Brave Heart and a spanish version of Butterfly).
@@Seatux They keep all names in japanese I think. Tori is Touya, Julian is Yukito, Madison is Tomoyo, Sakura's father is Fujitaka, Sakura's family name is Kinomoto. Cardcaptors in Australia was interesting. The US dub but an English version of the Japanese intro, Cstch You, Catch Me. It also was broadly broadcast in the correct episode order unlike the US. All in all, these changes made it less targetted to male audiences. Best way to watch the old dub. Cardcaptors is still one of my favorites anime. I have seen many many others over the almost two decades and it still holds high. It must be nastelgia glasses but I have watched it a dozen + times and love it still. I watched this in Filipino dub as a child and they kept the original names so it's weird knowing what they did to the dub back then. Also, the cousin joke was funny cause it's heavily implied in the original that Madison/Tomoyo has a crush on Sakura who is her cousin and her mom is also in love with Sakura's mom who is her cousin. And cousin marriages are ok in Japan, if I remember correctly. Li and Meiling are also cousins even though they are engaged (I guess maybe that's one of the reasons why she's just introduced as Li's friend?).
The German dub was decent too from what I can tell. No changed names and the voice actors actually seemed to give a fuck and they didn't change the story either.
Am glad that WB miss-advertised Cardcaptors as i probably would have missed out on this show as a kid. I have such fond memories of this show i just made a clow book on my channel a couple of weeks ago :) #shamelessplug

@@poisonedyoyoI have nothing against the name madison. Im just very pissed that they changed all their original names. only true ccs fans who have seen the original would know.
I started watching the series (not the adaptation) after I saw your video and I AM OBSESSED! Thank you so much for pointing this amazing show out to me!
My husband and his friend watched that show when they were in highschool. But they were huge anime nerds so they kind of watched everything out of curiosity. Obviously they watched the REAL version. Not the butchered US one.
CLAMP really has a big theme about forbidden love, so in Cardcaptor Sakura alone, you've got a couple of them mentioned--Tomoyo (Madison) is in love with Sakura, Yukito (Julian) and Touya (Tori) are together, Fujitaka was Nadeshiko's teacher when they fell in love. But there were a ton more. Meiling Li is Syaoran Li's cousin, and his fiancee at the beginning of the show, and that's the real reason why Meiling is hostile towards Sakura and feels in competition with her. Touya also had a relationship with his teacher Kaho Mizuki when he was in middle school. Kaho Mizuki is now in a relationship with Eriol Hiragizawa. And while Eriol is a reincarnation of a thousand-year-old magician, his physical body really is that of a ten-year-old boy, and Kaho is still in her thirties. Sonomi Daidouji (Tomoyo's mother) is Nadeshiko's cousin, also in love with Nadeshiko and forever devoted to her. And Rika is in love with their teacher, Takeda. When professional dubbers like Animax brought some CLAMP animes to South East Asia, they really didn't care. They went straight for it. In the anime CLAMP School Detectives, the male protagonists are aged 9-10, and their love interests were CANONICAL PRESCHOOLERS. Though the wikia says they're 6 years old. In one of the episodes before Utako and Akira become a couple, Akira shows up one night and offers a crying Utako chocolate liquers; having eaten too many of the sweets thinking they're normal chocolates, Utako gets drunk. She starts crying to Akira about her broken love affair with her teacher, who told her she was too young to be in love, but that she didn't care about age. All of this--a preschooler getting drunk and crying about her love affair--was included in the Animax dub of this show. Animax gave no fucks. It was also really weird to be enjoying Digimon when I was like, 10, and watching these pretty accurate Animax dubs without much name changing. But whenever I wanted to read fan fiction or interact with the international community for Digimon, the names were always different, so I had to remember two sets of names, and three sets of voices (two in English--Funimation and Animax dubs--and the original Japanese). And THE THING I HATE THE MOST is when the English dub removes the original song, and makes a shittier one. Like, nevermind the fact they translated Ouran High School Host Club's songs. That's fine. But when they removed Digimon's Butter-fly, or Brave Heart, and swapped it for "Digimon, Digital Monsters! Digimon are the champions!" IT WAS SO STUPID I hated it so much. ANIMAX DIDN'T DO THIS. But when you wanted to buy English copies of the movies which weren't available on TV, you had to buy the American dubs. Ugh. Terrible. I have to say, though, the Funimation dub for Fullmetal Alchemist was fairly revered with good reason. Animax itself kinda just gave up and showed the Funimation dub on their channel.
Growing up with the cardcaptors and being so used to those actors. Then watching cardcaptors redub and clear card the voice actors is soo different that tbh it kinda turns me off by it
So I live in Germany and I also remember watching the German dub on TV. In our version it was pretty obvious that the show has heavy romantic elements in it.
Even though it's an absolute mess, I still love Cardcaptors for purely nostalgic reasons. It was my introduction to the series, after all. I also really love the voice cast, a part of me has always wanted an accurate dub of Cardcaptor Sakura with the Cardcaptors cast. On a side note, some of the less localized translation are hilariously weird. Like, I can see how you could get Li Showron out of Li Xiaolong, but how they landed on calling the Raijin board the "Layzin Board” is like, Kay-o-ken levels of not understanding the assignment
I'm from Latin América (where the dub was pretty good) so this is my first time hearing the names they used in the english dub and I'm completely cracking up

In Latin America pretty much every anime with the exception of Pokemon, Sonic X and the second half of Yu-Gi-Oh was basically the japanese version in spanish, with spanish covers for opening and endings included, so Cardcaptor Sakura was my thing

i wouldn´t call it backpedaling, syaoran developed feelings for sakura through the show and started feeling conflicted about it,it really took him sometime to sort out his feelings, is not like he one daywake up and was like "im not gay anymore, i like man no more i like women women women "

I mean, that you thought of it as "edgier Sailor Moon" is something, seeing how the original is far lighter than Sailor Moon
I love cardcaptor Sakura. As a young black boy, it taught me that little girls could be the bravest heroes. And a good stories don't have to be "boy" stories or "girl" stories. Great vid
It's a girl story through and through. I liked it too, but let's not kid ourselves it's a girl story.
@Fernando Alvarado Thank you!

We CCS fans don't talk about that one lol
Yeahhhh I'm glad that story was cut lmao. Didn't one dub change it so that she was afraid of him and learned that he was actually nice or something? That's a much better story imo.

God that was tragic. Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the greatest anime of all time.
Or is it?

Yes It is
That the romance is muted in the dub is a gross understatement.

I have a petition and a video on TH-cam about getting Sakura Avalon back. Would you like me to send you the links?
You and I lived the same childhood! I still have one of those books, the one on the “Power” Card episode! You also unlocked a memory for me that CCS was part of my discovery of TH-cam in its beginning days as well.
Those fan-translations are what made me realize how different the story actually was in its US butchering. I ended up collecting all of the Master of the Clow manga in high school 😆
It's even more amazing how many cosplayers took to the show and tried to make every costume Sakura wore.

That and Sakura's friend/their teacher is just 🤢. She's like 10-12 or something.
Clear card (sequel of CCS) takes out the teacher's lover (Rika) and they also remove the teacher (Terada)
Clear card if u ask me was just pretty useless, watch it if you feel bored, but that's all to it.
You're talking about Rika right ? God that was so weird...
@@kerckmars She was like...16 at the time right ? CLAMP what the hell ?

I was surprised when I discovered that Meiling was exclusive to the Anime. She brings a lot of tension and balance sometimes
Really do remember becoming a huge fan of Meiling after warming up to her - even if it took a while, I'd say~
You're right though - I guess one problem I felt about CCS-anime is that latter half (Sakura Card-arc) felt teensy bit sluggish in pacing at times, perhaps due feeling more filler-y, which can be felt on the recurring characters up to that point next to newly introduced ones (Eriol, Suppie and Nakuru).

@@goonerOZZ If you watch the Clear Card season (the recent reboot/sequel), they basically wrote that friend and teacher out of the show. They are mentioned and I think she shows up once, but all of the other friends are there all the time. The difference 20 years makes.
No no no you don't understand. They don't want to help a lot of boys who have trouble accepting that they like other boys.
I haven’t heard the card captors theme song in like 17 years that’s amazing 😂
I have a petition and a video on TH-cam about getting Sakura Avalon back. Would you like me to send you the links?
The original show is clearly superior, but that US theme still slaps.
Uhh slaps?? That US theme slaps me to hell 🤮the book is better READ
no
the original one is the SUPERIOR VERSION
Lmao catch me catch you is so superior
Read craps and laughed.
luckily i live in australia. we got an english version of catch you and i am a dreamer
Did you watch it in Spanish? :0
Amazing!
I loved Carcaptors actually. Then when I got older and the internet, I watched it in Japanese. It introduced me to *Maaya Sakamoto* songs! :D
Madison was the best character. She had the Style, the Funds, the the cinematic knowledge, and she kept it as secret. There ive drove up engagement
heck yeah! thanks
Billiam due to an inability to add photos/memes to comments please imagine that instead of this reply there is a photo of surprised pikachu as this result was unexpected

Fans think its time for someone to make another dub that will have Sakura Avalon.
If she does come back it will give the makers more profit, there will be viewers of the sub verison, viewers of the dub by Funimation and then viewers of the Sakura Avalon dub that's 3 different versions of Clear Card and that will make profit for the makers.

Hooo boy we're talking about one of my favorite shows time to break in a wall of text
I didn't watch Card Captors growing up as a kid, but god it was one of the first animes I ever watched in full.
I absolutely loved Cardcaptors back in the day, I know that it isn't the "real" show but I love it all the same.

As well you should. It was good for what it was. It's too bad that they couldn't continue onto clear card.
I loved the show as a kid and still adore Matt Hill's performance as Kero to the point where I feel like I'd just be heartbroken to watch the newer dub without him in it.

Yeah Matt Hill is honestly still my favorite voice for Kero. He made the character so funny to listen to. :D

What DID Miami Mike do at DragonCon? I must know!
One Google search later: Huh. Guess it wasn't that bad.
What was it?
@@tachobrenner i just looked it up. Basically at one dragoncon Mike was trading some anime merchandise to this dude (ctenosaur) for some anime fansubs and then started selling the copies of the fansubs at his store. The original dude found out and added it into I believe one of the animes thus making this entire Miami Mike meme
Looked it up too: Selling Fansubs was kinda taboo back then, but this Ctenosaur group did it and blamed others for doing it as far as I know.
you know whats good to review.
ZOIDS.
everyone remembers them, but doesnt remember the plot
zoids had a plot?
@@walterlopez5054 an unnecessarily intricate plot. Well, i guess that more depends on which series. Ancient zoids doing ancient zoid things, zoid newtypes pretty much, and some of the most confusing hair. I think its all on TH-cam. It had funny moments and some actually cool fights.
Oh HELL YEAH!
I remember papayas.
Old version is wars' and invasion
New version is about versus battle zoidsz
I LOVED Cardcaptors, and for the longest felt like this version was a fever dream. Glad to know other people enjoyed it and that it actually existed lol
Sakura Avalon? Thanks God I live mi childhood in Mexico with the most accurate translation and dub
agreed
So sorry you missed out.
actually no, we watched the real thing
A weeeeeebooo
When I was young I didn't even think twice about the Japanese names, I loved that most Latin American dubs where translated from the Japanese original. Greetings from Tijuana !
I like how most of the comments are like "I'm so elite I never watched the english dub." Like lol congrats I geuss....
Yeah, I feel sorry for the people who watched this version. lol
I didn't watch Cardcaptor Sakura until middle school and by then (~2007/8) it was pretty easy to find fansubbed versions on anime streaming sites, which is where I found it :)
yea h it came out before that time and at first there was only aol and it took like a week to watch one episode because of internet speed lol
That’s why people hate Kids WB for this
....kirby, stargate infinity, ultimate muscle. You reminded me of my entire childhood lol
I watched the Spanish dub of cardcaptor Sakura in Mexico, and it was great!
I wonder now how did the Spanish dubs handled Japanese names and even Sakura's sighs.
@@EtanRedKnight the USA for Digimon was crap and destroyed the mood of the scenes everytime
@@Seatux They keep all names in japanese I think. Tori is Touya, Julian is Yukito, Madison is Tomoyo, Sakura's father is Fujitaka, Sakura's family name is Kinomoto. Japanese pronunciation is not difficult for spanish speakers the sounds are very similar and animes are really popular in Mexico, they don't tried to hide that the shows came from Japan.
@@rod750. Apparently it is difficult for Americans. Even Malay language anime kept original names and some Japanese syllables don't exist in Malay.
Just can't bring myself to watch Cardcaptors Sakura for long. Got the manga to read the original story line.

Shout out to the Canadian dub that kept things pretty ok especially compared the American dub.
The German dub was decent too from what I can tell. No changed names and the voice actors actually seemed to give a fuck and they didn't change the story either.
Lol they gave it a shounen-ish twist and after watching the original, I weirdly appreciate the Canadian Dub XD
Wait, we got a different dub???
@@YggiDee yea, the one one on Teletoon was much more faithful to the original.

Same here. It's because of this video that I'm sucked into Cardcaptor Sakura.
It’s so weird to find out it was marketed to boys cause everyone I knew that watched it was a girl. We ate this shit up, even though it was subdued.
My husband and his friend watched that show when they were in highschool. But they were huge anime nerds so they kind of watched everything out of curiosity. Obviously they watched the REAL version. Not the butchered US one.
It was the theme song sucked me right in.
Fans are trying to get the Cardcaptors dub back. I'm a Sakura x Madison (Tomoyo) fan.
I am from Latin America and I am grateful that here they respected the series almost 100% including the opening
that's good! I can't wait to watch the original version
Omg I know!!!! Up till this day I still know the op ❤️
I legit loved Cardcaptors when I was kid, I still enjoy it to from a nostalgic standpoint.
Growing up with the cardcaptors and being so used to those actors. Then watching cardcaptors redub and clear card the voice actors is soo different that tbh it kinda turns me off by it
billiam:did you watch card captors growing up?
me:(theme song blast in my head). never heard of it
So I live in Germany and I also remember watching the German dub on TV. In our version it was pretty obvious that the show has heavy romantic elements in it.
IM SCREAMING AT THE COUSINS JOKE SKSKSK
Even though it's an absolute mess, I still love Cardcaptors for purely nostalgic reasons. It was my introduction to the series, after all. I also really love the voice cast, a part of me has always wanted an accurate dub of Cardcaptor Sakura with the Cardcaptors cast.
On a side note, some of the less localized translation are hilariously weird. Like, I can see how you could get Li Showron out of Li Xiaolong, but how they landed on calling the Raijin board the "Layzin Board” is like, Kay-o-ken levels of not understanding the assignment
