Eric is a great spokesman for recreational guitar use. I'm glad he's aware of Jacob Collier and alternate tuning systems. I always thought he would find that stuff fascinating. Collier wasn't the first to do exploit the quirks of musical physics, but he maybe have been the first to show that they can be beautiful to plebian ears. Check out David Bruce's video on the method Collier used to modulate to G half-sharp.

Ryan, you really have a knack for interviewing and asking the right questions of your guests. When Eric mentioned hot guitarists, I thought of Nancy Wilson. If I had a favourite guitarist, it would be Brian May. Second time seeing your show. What an impression you've made. Cheers from Ottawa.

I just rewatched this show, something Eric said when he asked "why 12?" or something like that and then he said "12th root of two" I nearly fell off my perch.
WARNING, this is likely going to be a longish and technical ramble. My apologies uo front.
I thought I was the only oddball thinking along those lines.
He's referring to a ratio of any two notes seperated by one semitone within the equal tempered system, which is how frequencies of any two notes on a piano, seperated by a semitone are related to one another. For example, if you take a 12th root of two, you get a number 1.059463094 which is the ratio of a semitone, i.e if you take a standard A 440 Hz and multiply it by this number (440 x 1.059463094) you get a frequency of 466.16376136 Hz which is an A# above A 440 Hz. Likewise you can go backwards from A and get an Ab by dividing the 440 Hz by 1.059463094. This can carry on in either direction, by either multiplying or dividing the answer by this ratio and obtaining the next semitone below or above the one you previously got. Same thing applies to fretted (western) instruments with some modifications to get the fret positions on the finger board.
Sorry about all the huge numbers, just the way they fall off of a calculator display.
Now when Eric said: "Vic,Vic! Take a 19th power of 2 and then take the 12th root of that..." I had to relisten that a number of times to get what he was saying, that gives a fifth above the A440 in equal tempered system (659.255113826 Hz) - while an actual "perfect" 5th is 660 Hz, which makes the tempered 5th very close but not quite perfect.
Thanks again for bringing this side of Eric to us Ryan and apologies if this looks/sounds like a whole lot of gibberish as I've been thinking about this for quite a number of years now and tried talking with quite a number of musicians who rightly so gave me a blank look in response.
    Keep up the great work.
    Cheers!

In the end knowing all this technical and intelectual part of music doesn't make one a better musician and player, but can add a huge amount of satisfaction to an already great player. It's more of a practical value to a person designing and or creating musical instruments.

Glad I found your podcast, a real pleasant, professional and well put together show if I may say. I had just watched before Jordan Peterson and Eric's brother Bret conversation, well recommended although heavy and deep. I am an old rocker, started with my mum's 78's with Fats Waller (still a top favourite) then Emerson Lake Palmer, Deep Purple, Early Genesis and Led Zep etc etc and I had the Killer album of Alice Cooper when it first came out :-) , recently got back into good rock with Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Thorogood & Destroyers.

Got backstage (actually, closet dressing room) with Devo, in a small club near Penn's campus in Phila. They start their set, and the PA stack we were parked in front of was dead. My buddy Rob pulled out his mini Mag Lite, we found the issue, and we're invited back after the show. To Eric's point, I vividly remember the vibe in that tiny room. The entire band silently slamming beers, except for Mark Mothersbaugh, who seemed agitated as he paced back and forth. 4 steps one way, 4 steps back. Yeah... we didn't stay long.....

Conservatives are the new punk rockers. Rock and roll is theater. The roots of theater are in the church. The rituals, the ceremonies, the larger-than-life imagery, music and a little drama for good measure. Rock and roll used to be on the edge. Now it seems like just another college major, with some exceptions. Some of the best classic rock is operatic at its core. I'm a lefty guitar player that plays like Ryan (traditional).
