It takes nearly the same as going 120. The SDV6 is very efficient at high speeds. It takes more to drive in the city. Average that day was 10.9 l /100km. Still expensive. Christian

Hi Guys, as always an interesting and informative video. Here are a couple of thoughts for your consideration: 1. When using threaded bar as part of bushing replacement I always lubricate the threads, it makes them easier to work with and stops any possibility of damaging the threads; 2. When replacing suspension bushes it is normally recommended that you put the vehicle back on it's wheels (so the suspension is sitting in it's correct position) before tightening-up to final torque figure. If you don't, you risk damaging the new bush because it is always trying to twist.
Loved the picture of the Toyota tool kit lol 🤣🔧 When i did my hub bushes i put a jack under the hub carrier before i torqued the hub bolts to simulate the weight of the car . In the UK we have the same sign as the Autobahn " Floor it" sign , but it only means 60/70mph unless you drive a BMW or Audi , which it then means you go alteast 90mph & don't use your indicators as usual. Great video, see you next Sunday
The lower bush is actually a ball joint and it rotates freely. Not like the suspension bushings. It does not need to get tightend at ride height. Thanks for the feedback. Christian
That was such a good video guys 😂 The dishwasher also is great for the rubber interior bits and pieces! I loved watching you open it up on the autobahn.
Another great video, might want to buy that tool off you. Living in Canada and traveling all over the world I really appreciate driving in Germany, such good road etiquette unlike in Canada/US, however Switzerland is such a pain as you are always looking out for your speed, in my opinion not having to worry about your speed makes driving safer, obviously within reason but being 10 over in Switzerland is a crime pretty much 😂. Currently in Nepal and that's just a relax and accept rhe situation otherwise you will go insane... 🤯
Bravo! :) Usually when we replace this ball joint we do not disconnect drive shaft - it is enough to jack wheel hub.... And yes - you need wheel alignment. But for the next ball joint on the other side, after replacement you do not need wheel alignment.
Excellent video & very well produced Christian & Vera. Very impressed with that tool you made Sir. It really simplifies the job. I'm sure you could easily sell a few on eBay. Got to be worth €100. One thing i was taught years ago was that you should only fully tighten a Suspension Bush/Metalastic Bush with the vehicle on its wheels so that it is load bearing otherwise you can soon destroy them. It would be very difficult to do unless you have a Service Pit or a 4 Post Lift but the vehicle needs to be on its wheels. .
I recently had suspension bushings including the ball joint done by a garage. For control arm bushings I thought it is preferred to torque up with suspension at normal ride height ? May be that is just in control arms? Ran the autobahns a few times across the last 25+ yrs. Amazing how quick even the 2 ltr turbo diesel 5 series and E series are/were 😉 German engineering... The Nurburgring is also a unique German petrol head experience that people can enjoy. Best to have track experience though. I rented stage 2 Suzuki compact. Top tip - dont take a rhd car as there is or used to be a machine that you have to put a coin in for each lap. Pain to take race harness off to get out, run around and feed the machine. I hope they never get rid of the de-restricted sections. Best thing about Germany, after you guys of course.
Never drove on the Nurburgring 😫. The days with no speed limit are counted. Unfortunately. Bushings need to be torqued at ride height. Joints are a bearing and rotate freely. Christian
I went in germany few times and always enjoyed the floor it sign ! You're less afraid when doing 190 than in France where you shouldn't 😁 But in Australia I miss this sign ! here the speed limit is so low that you'll never see the disco lowering. Mostly it's max 100 sometimes 110, but you drive 60 in town ....🙃

Me to , I have 2 e bikes and a e unicycle in my dunning / living room, I see you only change on one knuckle instead of both , in USA most land rover owners buy rove parts from Atlantic British , when buying control arms they include all new nuts & bolts and axle nut which is nice
Another awesome video Christian and Vera - thank you. Being that I am new to owning a Discovery 3 over here in Austarila, were do you recommend i can buy a rear bushing (full kit) from? Because over here is Auz the retail cost of anything Land Rover is exorbitant and will send you broke after your first LR3 repair. Thank you so much again for your super cool video's :) Can I also ask why you put the wheel adaptors on your LR3 Vera? Your wheels look like they are standard LR3, so are you just adding to your wheel track for stability maybe?
Hi Vera and Christian, great tutorial again. Many thanks! One remark, I think they officially lowered down the torque of the central wheel nut to 350 Nm due to the frequently worn wheel bearings. I I am not wrong.
The Haynes manual and Land Rover manual differ on many torques. We just had that when we changed the oilpump on Saturday, and strongly believe that the LR torque is wrong. For me, I will now go only by the Haynes manual. Unfortunately, they often don't list all torques needed for the job. That's why we also have the LR torque settings as a printout. 🙋♀️Vera
Another great video ! Might consider using a light when filming underneath the car, as in the beginning the image was a bit dark. Keep up these video's !!
Great video as always so entertaining. But Christian is there any way you could lower the vehicle then jacket up and jack up the upper wishbone then just disconnect the lower wishbone ball and drop it out without having to take out the driveshaft? Do you think that’s possible or am I missing something. Great tool by the way saves you so much time.
I think there is not enough stroke on the half shaft and you risk pulling the joints apart. The procedure was 100% out of the LR workshop manual. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian I was thinking to pull the lower wishbone straight down so the half shaft could stay where it was. It assumes you can get the upper wishbone as high as possible by collapsing the suspension before jacking up the upper wishbone. I want to be as famous as Robbie on the D3 forum with the Paul procedure. Those guys at JLR only work on the manuals on brand new cars which of course come apart easily. By the way, did you get away with the chain saw dishwashing procedure or did Vera catch you?
Nice video, thank you, since I drive a discovery, I don't need to participate in entertainment like golf, tennis, and others, my discovery always gives me something to do, before I drove a Toyota and life was really boring. Question, is it possible to have the drawing of the tool to make for my discovery. In advance, thank you. 😁😁😁
Excellent! Guys do have some video replacing the water pump? I got it leak now i replaced the water pump but i still have leak..some guy told to replace the plastic part under the manifold... please let me know Thanks
Another great video again. Thanks for your dedication to make such useful contents! By the way, I think 400Nm might be way higher than the spec suggested by LR. I heard the torque for halfshaft nut was originally 350Nm, but LR announced to reduce it to 230Nm due to damage on hub bearings.
The manual was the 2006 LR original workshop instruction. I think there is no big difference between 350, 400 or 420. I also heard about the reduction but to 350 Nm. I will have a look at the later LR4 manual. Thanks. Christian
I have been on the autobahn (with another fellow driving) at 230kph (actually I think 234kph was the highest speed) and I found it made me feel ill with the scenery moving by so fast. The guys in the factory in Hannover seemed to be having a competition to see who could drive me faster than the others. I had to eventually sit in the back seat and not look outside on a trip to Amsterdam. I am happy to stick to 110kph or on some parts of the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory in Australia to 130kph. I can guarantee that the Stuart Highway is also not free of stones to smash the windscreen not free of pot holes either! Last time I did that road in summer it was the engine temperature that limited the speed anyway. Great video and looking forward to the rear brake procedure video. BTW I would call that part the lower control arm "bush"and not a ball joint.
It is very very rare that the Autobahn is free like in the video. Typically we are happy if it flows with 120km/h. Only if it’s free we (I) enjoy driving full throttle. The ball joint is not a bushing. LR calls it ball joint in the manual and in the spare parts list. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Thanks Christian. Strange that LR define it like that. My experience of the Autobahn was 21 years ago and there were only small sections where such high speeds were permitted as I recall.
You two are very entertaining 😆 keep up the great work👍. My Freelander TD4 has a light that comes on "120kmh overspeed" I'm sure it can go a little faster than that.
I am very surprised that the old rear lower bush did not cause any knocking sound when being driven. My 2010 Range-Rover sport has a knocking sound from the rear left hand side axle. Two non franchised Land-Rover garages have not found the problem and stopped the knocking yet. We tried soaking all the bushes with Silicon spray and the knocking is now worse than ever! I think the best place to start is to replace the Anti-Roll bar (Sway bar) bushes to see if the knocking stops. Then if not, the rear upper and then the rear lower bushes, until the knocking stops. Would you agree Christian?
I also traced knocking before and it ended up that it was just the tie rod and not the sway bar itself. I used a hammer and knocked on the joints and bushes etc and the noise became apparent. I think it was in this video but I am not sure th-cam.com/video/QmXwQjXAu1k/w-d-xo.html Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Thank you Christian. I have already just replaced the tie rod ball joints, so the knocking was not from them. The knocking start as soon as I drive the car over the slightest of bumps and continues at low to medium speeds. At high speeds it seems to disappear, but maybe I can’t hear it so well then. The strangest thing is that if I drive through a big pot hole, it doesn’t knock! Only small undulations makes it knock. It is most confusing. Thanks for the video link. However, that one was for brake pads on Vera’s Freelander and swapping the wheels round. I think it is best for me to change all the anti roll bar bushes first, to see if that stops the knocking. These will be easy. Then if the knocking is still there change the upper first, then the lower bushes on the rear, left hand side axle. One of the problems is that there are many internet threads on this problem regarding LR3/4 and especially the RRS. But they all say the problem is something different. Thanks for you help.
Always with the suspension fuse. In 9 years working on my L319 Discos, I've never seen the need to take the suspension fuse out. The last time I was on the Autobahn I got flashed out of the way by a Dacia Logan, with 5 people on board. I was doing ~180kmh in my D4 which is quite fast enough with stuff on the roof.
Hi Christian, where did you order the original FoMoCo Oil pump? I’m looking for it as well and I’m not sure, which one is the newest style pump…Thanks!
Great video again Christian and Vera very enjoyable 😊 When I recently changed the rear brake shoes backing plate, I borrowed a CV joint press to separate the CV joint from the hub as the Haynes manual stressed not to hammer the joint as it would almost certainly damage the rear differential. However I honestly believe they're being over dramatic but I was too afraid to use my hammer just incase it did damage it. What are your honest thoughts on the Haynes manual warning? Cheers see you next Sunday 👍😊
That is why I separated and stretched the joint to make sure it doesn’t impact into the diff. It does not but care must be taken. Ours was also not seazed and moved immediately. Thanks. Christian
@14:10 is this the same torque (175 nm) for a 2007 Range Rover sport SC? I did mine to 225 ft lbs/305 nm and 85 ft lbs for toe link, now I’m worried. @15:20 I did mine to 350 nm/ 250 ft lbs also.
An old Miele dishwasher is under 100€ (That’s only ½ a tank of diesel in 2022!) on eBay, and (like your car) they are not designed to be thrown away if something breaks. Perfect for cleaning car/chainsaw/bike parts!
My dad build it 53 years ago. It is blocked since about 10 years otherwise it would have been confiscated. Sad. Back in the days, he shot all kinds of stuff with it but not a LR. 😂 Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Hi Christian We are allowed to own them here in Australia and fire them at ranges with a special licence. They are still very rare. Just like blackpowder rifles and revolvers. Great heirloom and a wonderful piece of history. Cheers. Marcus
You forgot to take the chain saw parts out before your wife came back! This is however a good idea. Another one that helps with keeping a marriage interesting is using the wife's toothbrush for cleaning the grout between the bathroom tiles.
Yes, you are absolutely right. He should have done that, and he should have taken the dishes out before cleaning his chainsaw. But I would have found out anyway because everything smells now like old grease which collects in the strainer / sieve. 🙄😅🙋♀️
How's the fuel consumption at 196klm/hr Christian? As someone has already said, the absolute maximum permitted here in Australia is mostly 110kph, so Toyotas, and there are thousands of them, go quite fast enough, oh, and they just keep going, boring isn't it? But toolkits, nah who needs them? Good vid.C&V cheers guys.
The fuel consumption on the LR4 does not go over 11.5 on the Autobahn. However, on coutry roads and city it can go up to 13 l/100 km. So for high travel speeds it is actually quite good. Our LR4 however takes only 9.5 L/100km when we travel 120 km/h. So at regular speeds, it is much better than the SDV6. Christian
Cars must be fairly new to run good at higher speeds. Once a car has 200t km on the clock, they become sluggish and it’s difficult to maintain them for a quality ride at higher speed. Even a Mercedes or a BMW drives much better when new. A new V8 Land Cruiser is a extremely rare site in Germany but I am sure it would drive 210 easily. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian IF i has “street” tires on the land cruiser i would definitely try that speed, with the bigger tires I’m running makes it more of a challenge. Now my VW Golf R that would be so much fun on the autobahn
I sure wish our issues were simple bushes at the moment. Sadly electrical gremlins have resulted in the D3 being towed to the mechanics to wait for attention. No battery resets or iidTool fault code clearing would get it out of limp mode.
Arg, this sucks. No fault code is the worst. Vera complaint about bad radio reception, limp mode after start (twice) and our aux battery did not charge. Guess what: my 12v socked which I installed burned up and had a bad connection. It must have sparked and the wires looked burned 😳. That caused the issues. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Hahaha. Lucky you can still type. My wife said lucky you don't live close. I cannot see a problem myself although I may take the dishes out first.
Would not even consider doing 160 + in my old D3 on Aussie roads or the way my suspension is. Need to replace all the wishbones etc. All but the front LCA are original.
@@Vera_and_Christian we do like our "bush" and outback. Question for you. I'm look at replacing all my wishbones, a vendor has a set for the rear uppers that are the RR Sport version with axial bush that act more like a bearing than a bush. "These are the arms as fitted to the Range Rover Sport L320. The metal frames are identical but the bushes are different, most importantly the rear bush is an axial design working like a bearing rather than a fixed bush, this is the usual failure point on the standard Discovery arm" I normally would go with original type but keen to read your thoughts??
It did help with the biodegradable buildup but apparently the previous owner did use regular oil and the dishwasher does not get that off. So I had to manually scrub this off and use harder chemicals. Christian
We have the same overtaking rules in the Uk , stay on inside lanes unless overtaking but not everyone follows the rule , it drives me crazy Perhaps it’s because our top speed is supposed to be 70mph and people do it to stop people driving faster than 70 but a lot of them only do 65 😤😤😤😤
Slightly different in that German road law has a specific focus on not inhibiting traffic flow which means, within reason, if a faster car rear-ends a slower one on the Autobahn, and if the slow car should not have been in that lane, the slow car is deemed responsible.
…one happy coincidence for anyone who takes advantage of the “floor it” sign is that, in my experience, if another car decides to move into the fast lane without checking first, and thus causes you to melt your brakes trying to shed 100kph within 20 metres, they almost always have a yellow rear numberplate. Whenever I see a yellow numberplate, I cover the brake! I don’t know if a yellow rear numberplate is just an international warning of poor mirror discipline but it seems to work!

Not yet, when Christian does have time to do the drawing, it will be posted on our Patreon page. 🙋♀️Vera
Hi, great vid, what is it you put under the rear diff so you can jack it up ? And will that work for the discovery 4 as well ?
Me to , I have 2 e bikes and a e unicycle in my dunning / living room, I see you only change on one knuckle instead of both , in USA most land rover owners buy rove parts from Atlantic British , when buying control arms they include all new nuts & bolts and axle nut which is nice
I wish we could have a road like the autobahn in the US. Nice video.
Thank you so much again for your super cool video's :)
Can I also ask why you put the wheel adaptors on your LR3 Vera?
🙋♀️Vera
Yay! My Sunday morning lesson and enjoyment video time😁😁👋🏻
Another great video !
I agree, same with us. You also save a lot of money this way. Golf is damn expensive in Germany. Christian
Excellent! Guys do have some video replacing the water pump? I got it leak now i replaced the water pump but i still have leak..some guy told to replace the plastic part under the manifold... please let me know Thanks
yes, here the link th-cam.com/video/XiYWQjJZiM4/w-d-xo.html🙋♀️Vera
Another great video again.
Thanks for your dedication to make such useful contents!
By the way, I think 400Nm might be way higher than the spec suggested by LR.
I heard the torque for halfshaft nut was originally 350Nm, but LR announced to reduce it to 230Nm due to damage on hub bearings.
The manual was the 2006 LR original workshop instruction. I think there is no big difference between 350, 400 or 420. I also heard about the reduction but to 350 Nm. I will have a look at the later LR4 manual. Thanks. Christian
Good job, long lunch time job though 😄
@@michaeldallimore8590 They are everywhere in our Autobahn Net. Most often when the section has more than two lanes. 🙋♀Vera
You can get a full set of those cups plus the Threaded bar for the job.
You two are very entertaining 😆 keep up the great work👍. My Freelander TD4 has a light that comes on "120kmh overspeed" I'm sure it can go a little faster than that.
Mine did not have that, but it maxed out at 140kmh, downhill. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
17:09 Easter egg LR just missing the "Time" . I miss driving on the Autobahn..
Hiya guys another great video. Looking forward to the brake service video 👍👍
OMG another great video please keep it up I own a discovery 2 now I will upgrade to a 3 or 4 your video’s have given me the confidence 😎😎thanks
Another excellent video but a 'lunchtime job'? I might just about do an oil change in my Discovery 4 in a lunchtime!!
We could not finish completely during lunch. 😬 Christian
You guys are the best!
You just have to love that line from Vera "I'm filming so I can't get you anything" 😂
I think it was in this video but I am not sure th-cam.com/video/QmXwQjXAu1k/w-d-xo.html
Christian
Will you sell those components you made to press out and in the bearing?
That is unlikely. It just takes too much time to fabricate one. But he will but the drawings up on our Patreon page, sooner or later. 🙋♀️Vera
This with the Dacia sucks but it can never happen uphill 👍. Christian
We have only one road in Australia that is totally “derestricted”. It’s right up the middle. Most of are highways are 100 or 110.
Not any more, I believe there is a 130km/h limit now.
Super Reparatur 👍
Vera does not deserve that stress on the autobahn! Poor Vera!
What about me listening to her complaining nonstop as soon as I drive above 140 😂. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian lol
Hi Christian, where did you order the original FoMoCo Oil pump? I’m looking for it as well and I’m not sure, which one is the newest style pump…Thanks!
I ordered a 1001-G2 from PSA. For the latest LR part number you should call your local dealer. The LR price may not be as bad either. Christian
Are you nuts?? I would never trust my Disco to go that fast. Great video again guys. 👍
Our LR3 does not like this kind of abuse but the LR4 is much newer. 😬 Christian
Great video again Christian and Vera very enjoyable 😊
When I recently changed the rear brake shoes backing plate, I borrowed a CV joint press to separate the CV joint from the hub as the Haynes manual stressed not to hammer the joint as it would almost certainly damage the rear differential.
Thanks. Christian
Great vid, you guys would laugh your ass of seeing me flooring my TD5 Defender, it will take a while before driving 140 on max speed😂😂
😅👍 But I would be happy to see you on the road. I do greet every Discovery and Defender driver. 🙋♀️Vera
I enjoyed the video. I'm surprised; I would've figured that vehicle would be using king pins.
@14:10 is this the same torque (175 nm) for a 2007 Range Rover sport SC? I did mine to 225 ft lbs/305 nm and 85 ft lbs for toe link, now I’m worried. @15:20 I did mine to 350 nm/ 250 ft lbs also.
Toques change here and there and manuals are sometimes wrong. Unfortunately. 😬 Christian
Thanks for great video 👍👍👍
Another great video.
Keep them coming you crazy Germans. 😉
Great video. Can we get the specs for the pressing tool ? :D
Thanks for the video.
An old Miele dishwasher is under 100€ (That’s only ½ a tank of diesel in 2022!) on eBay, and (like your car) they are not designed to be thrown away if something breaks. Perfect for cleaning car/chainsaw/bike parts!
Yes, I was thinking about this too but I don´t have room for it. Christian
I love my 2012 Range Rover Sport she is a dream and very reliable
Hi guys! I love the Cannon. Is that for when you have finally had enough and need to dispose of a land rover. For a new toyota land cruiser.....lol
My dad build it 53 years ago. It is blocked since about 10 years otherwise it would have been confiscated. Sad. Back in the days, he shot all kinds of stuff with it but not a LR. 😂 Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian
Hi Christian
We are allowed to own them here in Australia and fire them at ranges with a special licence.
Hey guy's, will the canon ball clear the windowsill?? I assume you will open the window.
The canon was funktioning in it's early days but Christian's dad had to blank it unfortunately. So no more shooting. 🙋♀️Vera
Love love love! ,🤘😎
Christian
so jealous of your Autobahn. and you're right I probably wouldn't take my land cruiser up to 190 even with a V8
Thank you.
Forget the LR, we want to see more about the cannon in the living room!
My dad build it 53 years ago. I still got his cast of the barrel too. The barrel is 80kg solid bronze. Christian
Christian
great video yet again. Just goes to show a bit of confidence you can achieve anything..
👍💪Absolutely right. 🙋♀️Vera
Abaut the windskreen, I broke allredy 4 i Germani going over 160km/h in our Disco3
Another good video but I fear it will be Vera only next week if she opens the dishwasher first.
I lost that scene. Damn. Her reaction was a serious OMG. We had to run the dishwasher empty one cycle to clean it 😬.
I would trade our Autobahn every day with the endless Aussi outback 👍. Christian
The metal frames are identical but the bushes are different, most importantly the rear bush is an axial design working like a bearing rather than a fixed bush, this is the usual failure point on the standard Discovery arm"
I normally would go with original type but keen to read your thoughts??
We demand more videos!
How did your chainsaw parts turn out. I thought anything made of aluminium would get corroded by the caustic dishwasher environment
It did help with the biodegradable buildup but apparently the previous owner did use regular oil and the dishwasher does not get that off. So I had to manually scrub this off and use harder chemicals. Christian
Красавчик!!!
Is that a real cannon?
We have the same overtaking rules in the Uk , stay on inside lanes unless overtaking but not everyone follows the rule , it drives me crazy
Perhaps it’s because our top speed is supposed to be 70mph and people do it to stop people driving faster than 70 but a lot of them only do 65 😤😤😤😤
Slightly different in that German road law has a specific focus on not inhibiting traffic flow which means, within reason, if a faster car rear-ends a slower one on the Autobahn, and if the slow car should not have been in that lane, the slow car is deemed responsible.
Why don't you install polyurethane bushings?
Ball joints are no bushings, they are bearings. Steel on steel. Christian
