Some trivia: The lovely star Nova Pilbeam is the same actress Hitchcock used in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934) playing the kidnapped child, at the age of 15. She met her future husband on that set , an assistant of Hitchcock's and in this film( Young and Innocent) during the collapsed mine scene, it is her husband Pen's hand that is holding on to her in the close ups. Nova started her career in film as a well known British child star and made many films, her last being in 1946. Her husband died in a plane crash in Scotland in 1941, they had one child. Nova was Hitchcock's original pick to star in his 1940 MGM film "Rebecca" but Joan Fontaine got the part. Nova died at the age of 95. I love this film "Young and Innocent" ( also released under the title "She Was Too Young"). It has all the elements of a classic Hitchcock film: an innocent man running from the police with the help of a girl, romance, humor, thrills, suspense, Hitch poking fun at the police, incredible camera work ( the slow zoom-in shot from up high right down to the drummer's eyes was used later in Hitchcock's "Notorious" with a zoom from up high into the key in Ingrid Bergman's hand)and did you catch the obligatory cameo of Hitchcock himself at 15:42 as a person outside the court house trying in vain to get a picture on his little camera? You can't get more "Hitchcock" than this film.
Oh, yes!! And the closeups of the birds (gulls I’m this case)! And of course the hands outstretched towards each other in the collapsed mine scene - can you say N BY NW?? This is a GREAT movie!!
@@mollywolly4201 Yes, you're right! There are echos of that mine scene in the final scene of "North by Northwest". Good catch. Also, now that I think of it, this plot device was also used in "Saboteur" in the famous Statue of Liberty scene with Robert Cummings, in "Rear Window" with Jimmy Stewart and in "Vertigo", again with Stewart. I wonder if Hitch had a fear of heights? 🤔
I liked Hitchcock's cameo. I wonder if that was the first time he did that.
@@thomassnider6691 Hitchcock's first cameo in his films was in "The Lodger" (1927) where he appears briefly talking on a phone with his back to the camera in the begining of the film.

Underestimated Hitchcock film. The comments of the pig farmer in his truck was priceless. Thanks for the B&W fine print.
Hitchcock LOVED old music hall actors and comics and FILLED this with wonderful English low class humor. Old Will was the best, the ridiculous lawyer losing his glasses, the comic duo of the two bumbling cops, even the little boy pumping gas.
The pig farmer "sketch" was priceless. Most of his Brit films were the equal of his USA productions. A few of his last USA films were, I think, pretty poor.
This early comedy by Hitchcock is new to me. Thanks for the upload, CCC.
I remember watching this with my late dad one afternoon...I was a kid, but we were both watching intensely...never forget it...Great movie...hitchcock was amazing.

I love English cinema from before World War II. It is so soulful, intelligent and universal. This cinematography has become a model for Hollywood films. Or maybe it was the other way around....

Most British films of the era were seen as B class. Now we see more clearly with age that many were A's compared to most American films of the time with superior direction, scripts, acting, and intelligence.

I've always liked Hitchcock movies. And was enjoying this movie until the band scene with the white men in black face. I hate that part, It's so despicable and racist.
