My £10 per metre FRUGAL FENCE using rebar

- I needed a cheap fence solution around our garden to prevent toddlers getting too close to the edge of a wall. This fence was put together using 12mm rebar and roof battens, and I'll show you how I made them and also cover the total cost breakdown in the video.

its a railing ...wtf is a fence? ohhh the big things that look like walls and not a railing
I could have almost expected a crude outcome from the pragmatic purpose and material choices, but you always manage to craft your projects to be uncompromisingly decorative too. Thank you for leaving in the jig "doh" moment, we all have those!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video! Actually, the best part of the build was when you realized the jig was "stuck," and instead of pissing and moaning, you laughed and found a quick solution. It is amazing what you can accomplish with salvaged timber, which is why I have so much (probably too much!).
Thanks! 👍
I was a bit iffy about this when it started but the end job(by) actually looks really good! Such a simple way to create something that looks very cool!
Thank you
This is one of your best projects Keith. For the money you spent, to the end result... Absolutely brilliant. Gives us a lot to think about. Well done!
Thank you
This is an attractive and effective solution. Your instructions were spot-on. Thanks!!
Thank you
Lots of people dislike using rebar for anything other than burying in concrete. Never worked out why, especially when you compare the price of it to plain round bar! I reckon it gives a really nice result and goes particularly well with wood
Completely agree! 👍
@RagnBoneBrown I built a rose arch entirely from rebar a few years ago. Coat of hammerite on it and it looked just as good as anything you'd buy in a harden centre, but for less than ¼ the price. Nice and easy to weld too, as there's no risk of blowing holes in it. Even with my poor welding 😆
This was great, hard to picture looking so good at the start but turned out wonderfully. Great video
That looks really good. A great result! I would say that moving the longer rebars to a more central position on the panel made little difference because they are only supporting the upper batten, whereas the weight of all the bars is on the lower batten. Doesn’t seem to have sagged either way.
But the bottom rail would sag and all my rebar would fall out
@@RagnBoneBrown but have you fixed those longer rebars to the bottom rail (by adhesive or some mechanical fixing)? Or are they just going through holes? If the latter then it’s not supporting any of the bottom rail.
That turned out really nicely. Frugal but fine.
Looks pretty high end, Keith! Good job, and nice to see you already have your baby's safety in mind!
Beautiful, thanks! I have rebar and wanted to do something like this but wasn’t sure how, now I know.
Man, this looks fantastic. Great inspiration.
Really like the end result here. I have a similar garden wall and a toddler too so this is an attractive project... Cheers for the inspiration
Thank you! Cheers!
Pretty cool idea and it turned out well, you could also substitute the rebar for galvanised conduit that is also pretty inexpensive.
Looks smart. What a good idea.
It is a neat job and one i may emulate. Relevant building regs for balustrade stipulate a 100 mm sphere shouldn't be able to pass through the railing gap, so you got that right
Phosphoric acid is good for converting rust. I bought 5 litres off Ebay several years ago and it wasn't expensive. It can be used over and over again. Every workshop should have a can. Great video by the way.
Looks great, very well done
You could put a screw through the bottom wood onto the leg to have load transfer of the frame bottom as well as the top.
Simple and good looking fence. I made a dog kennel and used rebar as the bars a few years ago.
I've used postcrete to set some 9 inch square wooden gateposts. More expensive than mixing concrete, but much easier, and ideal for a job like this where the quantities are not too much and you need a little at a time - you wouldn't want to mix a small amount for each panel, but nor would you want a big batch sitting around half the day until you get to the last one.
That looks great!
that regar jig is slick!
Great effort Dude. Well done. I can never quite reconcile the cost of roofing battens against most other construction timber.
You and me both!
a very smart outcome - now I'm going to be wracking my brains trying to figure out how to use rebar in a project myself!!
Well done Keith. Nice mix of wood and steel, simple yet durable divider.
I love it! It’s the cutest fence I’ve ever seen! Well done! Now add some fairy lights! Adorbs!
I live in a place where the soil is very rocky. Those auger bits really work well BUT when the auger hits a big enough rock you get damn near close to breaking your wrist.
Brilliant, well done Keith, that looks great and on a budget too, that seems a good price for the Re-bar, last time I bought some (during Covid) it cost me a good deal more !
Roof battens, gravel boards, fence posts and CLS are my favourite starting point for a project as they're standardised and therefore competitively priced !
You've now only got to work out how to stop over-enthusiastic Dads, Uncles and Grandfathers from kicking footballs into it and going A over T onto the patio over it ! 😜
Ha ha! Thank you
That looks great Keith. Love the use of the rebar. I did spot your jig problem as you were putting up the first panel, but multi tool to the rescue!
I wish you would have posted this a few months ago. Recently did something similar in our garden (toddler and drop scenario too) although doesn't look as smart as yours. Your solution looks great.
Can’t believe how elegant that looks - especially considering it’s reclaimed roof battens and simple rebar. Cracking idea with the jig too …. Even if it did need ‘modifying’ 😃😃😃
Thank you! 😊
Another amazing project, Keith, well done! As ever, it was interesting watching you work and think your way through it. Thank you.
Nice handrail would compliment the fence down those few steps Keith if may say so, but you have done a great job with the fence mate, have a nice day all !!!. 😀😀👍👍.
Thanks 👍
Looks good Keith. The only bit which made me chuckle was your line about not having to stop tanks. Give it a few years once the little one is not so little, tanks will seem like child’s play 😂
Amazing work, Keith! It turned out really beautiful! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! You too!
Top job and no background music, thanks
Another option on dealing with the rust could be a basic bluing. I think this is done by getting an even controlled rust or layer of oxidation and then boiling the rebar as is.
Nice job. I probably would have lowered it by 3-4 inches so there's more rebar in the ground and I think it would just look a bit nicer then. But overall pretty good. That panel you added to the end might look nice along the whole fence, (to hide the large gap)
Looks fab! The pictures of the aiden project looked awesome as well. Must watch that too 😊
This looks great. Love the idea. It looks great. And what a great price
Fence looks really good, industrial and rural all in one! + + +
Great episode, the fence looks great and just right for what YOU need. I think it’s great to do this as we are drilled to do certain things, but reusing materials, doing your own design and the re bar. Love it 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Great job Keith, the end result was super!
Thanks Geoff!
I reckon that looks really good very smart but fits in a garden really well
It is clever and it looks good, great fence, Keith.
Also you made me think that I would love a "get me out of trouble" tool for everything.
Thank you!
Great project. I recently used rebar for a trellis. Very happy with outcome. Great stuff and yes, very inexpensive. 😊
It really is!
I love your channel plus i hear metric. So delightful for my ears
Glad you enjoy it!
That is a very smart fence.
As soon as you showed the fence spacing jig I saw the problem. Glad it was a easy fix.
But why not most the fence directly in the concrete fence. that why you do not need to mow around
Still looks great BTW. Might have to do this for my garden beds. Although will need to be taller as my dog can jump about a 4 foot fence with out touching it.
Brilliant idea and that looks great. And gives me an idea to replace some wooden ones in my garden. I am going to use hammerite, please dont take that as a criticism as it isnt intended to. Auger bits for digging 😊
The one flaw I see in this design is that the rebar holes on the bottom rails will collect water when it rains. This will eventually rot the wood and rust the rebar, paint and preservatives notwithstanding. It would have been better to drill smaller-diameter drainage holes all the way through the rails.
Great looking fence, with rebar and old roofing battens, to be honest I would like that fence in my garden, good build project. As always a great video take care
Thanks 👍
A really nice looking project 👌
This is a great idea! But, It helps to have all the fancy equipment.
Another great inspirational post
Hey Keith, I got this again on autoplay and it occurred to me that the long lower batten might sag anyway, because the long rebar pieces go through that piece of wood. So that batten is unsupported, and it's even weighted by the other rebar pieces. To reduce this risk you could put some nails in the same hole where the rebar goes through the wood, so that the wood can grip on the rebar more. Like keys in a keyway, if that makes sense. Also congrats for the 250k subs. Been watching since shed number 1!
I tried to explain the same but he didn’t get my point. Probably just thought I was being negative. 🤷♂️
@@chrisb2443 @RagnBoneBrown sometimes it's easy to misinterpret people on the internet. Thats why I always add plenty of emojis 😛😛😛😛given how heavy the rebar is, I think the lower rail will start to sag pretty soon, and he'll realize the mistake then!
That turned out really nice 👍 ❤
Great cheap little fence solution. Also, multitools are the best tool for the worst time!
Yes they are!
That looks great I might make some decking rail panels like this thanks for the video
Excellent video, and a brilliant idea, really enjoyed watching. Thank you.
If you've got any farmers in the area you can try asking them if you can take some of their dead wood. Fella near me lets me take dead standing logs on his property every now and then. They get a cleaner property and you get some free logs. It's a win win
I wonder how long it will be before someone treads on the bottom rail and all the re-bar falls out, but this is a great looking fence.
Why not drill the masonry top and insert your panels on the top of the retaining wall?
Suspect I'd break some of the capping stones doing that
Well, that was an excellent project - and I think it looks very tidy.
If you don't mind, I'll pinch the idea and do something very similar down our driveway and then perhaps a box hedge on the lawn side. 👍
Go for it! Thank you
That looks really smart. Thanks for showing your errors. Your mate at Proper DIY says sand and cement work out cheaper, lol. Could you have used an expanding foam product?
Brilliant cideo and the finished project looks great!!
Great idea and it looks nice too
Love your videos Keith 👍
Very good result. Be careful. The local council will be knocking on your door and asking if you want a job... I wish my ground was as easy to 'Drill' as yours. Mines mostly gravel and spits the dummy more often than not. But still better than trying with just a spade.
a good way to drop the price even more would be to use brush handles instead of rebar, near me you can get one for £1 and they are about a meter and a half long.
Amazing work & content again, nice one
What about the frost line concrete post mix should be filled to below frost line to prevent it being pushed upwards
Looks awesome!
Look great well done
Very nice. Spray twist spray twist.
Cheers Martin
Cut it twist it flip it trim it!
Отлично выполнена работа. Одно замечание. На мой взгляд, было бы лучше установить ограждение просверлив отверстия в существующем каменном ограждении.
Another great video as always. I wish i could sign up for your course, the thought of trying to get paid work done and editing and filming makes me tired just thinking about it lol
A lovely project. Nice work!
Many thanks!
I think I would have gone for at least 1m high. Having a low fence effectively increases the fall height.
Looks great, but where are you getting 12mm rebar from for £8 per 6m length?? You've listed every product except the rebar in the description.
That s a great fence
a bargain indeed, looks good, thumbs up 👍
That looks really good.😊😊
Thanks, this has give me a great idea 🙂
Good work!
Looks ace! 👍🏻
Cheers
I would've screwed the capping strips on from the underside.
Love this. Turned out great. Great idea.
Thanks so much! 😊
SUPER JOB
Great video as always! You mentioned the post mix, how many bags did you end up using for this project? Im looking to use rebar and postcrete in an upcoming project and dont want to order more bags than i need.
Through the years, I don't think I've seen you make mistakes so much as educational opportunities. The fence does look nice.
Sometimes you need tank-rated barriers for a toddler. They're surprising strong and smart, and thirst for destruction.
cracking job might have to pinch the idea
Nice job keith!
Very nice!
I love the idea and the outcome. My only concerne is that a toddler could get stuck between the rebar, maybe I’m over concerned 😊
The bars need to be 100mm apart which is accounted for
@@RagnBoneBrownGreat. I should not doubt that you already took it in consideration😊
2'30'' You can do it also with Cola
Great project! feels like a lot of work but also DIY-able (?) Are we getting some catio updates soon?
Cheers! There's not much to update on with the catio... Is there anything specific you'd like to see?
@@RagnBoneBrownLet me think! I've seen recently a catio with a circle or cilinder that the cats could sit/nap in, and also some bird feeders on the outside so bird come and can be watched by the cats with no danger, maybe a water fountain, stuff like that, catio amenities I guess
