Scott Joplin was one of the most unappreciated musical geniuses of his time. The movie "The Sting" introduced me to his music, and to ragtime, back when it first came out, and I've loved ragtime ever since.
That's the same place I got my introduction to his genius. I've not looked back since.
Finally!!!! Someone who doesn't play ragtime so damn fast that it violates Scott Joplin's instruction to Not Play Ragtime fast. GREAT job.

The problem is it's super fun to play fast, and a fun challenge, but the proper pace has a really nice and completely different character and atmosphere which is lost when you go rush e on it.

Although playing by the tune, not feelings is neandarthalic I came for the sound. Piano is too serious, victorian era honkeytonk is too funny and salloon piano is perfect mix.

@@theparkouristad Going to disagree. I found the motion excessive and distracting and multiple times the reflection of the camera on the pole/gimbal appeared in the curio cabinet mirrors. I prefer multiple camera angles to achieve focus on hands, feet, and wide where possible.

My dad loved Scott Joplin. When he developed Alzheimer’s in his mid-80s he moved in with me and played his CDs on repeat for hours, at high volume because he was hard of hearing. So they drive me nuts but also bring fond memories of Dad.

I followed this guy 12 years ago on TH-cam when he was just a kid living in his parent's house. He played lots of "Saloon Music" back then and I loved his earlier Joplin pieces.... there were very few of us back in the early days of TH-cam... this fella made it big!

I thought I was fairly well versed in Joplin's music but "Magnetic Rag" and "Reflection Rag" were new to me. Two new pieces to learn!
Scott Joplin wrote 100s of songs. Because he was Black a lot were copied/stolen from him. Also people put their name on his music. The law, back then, would never side against a White person. It was very important for Black people not to get credit for their work.

I always wanted my own personal piano player, suitably attired of course, that I could keep in a cupboard and summon when the mood dictated. Now I have found him, and can call for whichever composer suits my mood, I'm even prepared to put up with his saucy stares. Maestro, play on.
LIstening to Vinheteiro play this I'm thinking about what Scott originally played on and if it was similar in tone. Probably not, Scott composed from 1895-1917, and the likelihood that his piano had more of a slightly out of tune, harder hammer, plinky sound, and attack, was more likely. It is very much appreciated when Scott's music is played on a piano like what Vin uses, it adds more of a realism to it.
I was brought up on the Joshua Rifkin recordings (I may even still have the LPs) so it is interesting to hear familiar pieces (I knew all except Reflection Rag and A Really Slow Drag) played by a different pianist on a piano that is probably closer to the ones that Scott Joplin would have played.
Whenever you see him play any Ragtime you can tell he's almost ready to smile.
