You also need to know that these folks do not make up his regular band or group. There are a combo of artists in their own right/name or great session players who tour/gig it up with the best of the smooth jazz artistry, like Mr. Lorber. The sax player has performed with just about any/all names/bands in smooth jazz and Sonny, the percussionist, used to play regularly on gigs around the globe with Lee Ritenour. Just outstanding musical chops by all of them.
Jeff Lober is just the best, all his music is just 🔥. If you can go back to his early stuff when it was called Jeff Lober fusion and you'll be amazed. Kenny G played with him back then.
And all these people saying Kenny G is vapid & soulless. They wouldn't say that if they had heard him, as I did at the Roxy, w/ Lorber in the 70s. They blew the roof off the place. Absolutely sensational!! And Kenny Gorelick was the original saxophonist on the records on all these tunes that Eric The Great is now playing!
The Jeff Lorber fusion slapped me in the face late 70s early 80s when I lived for the weekend, and the jazz funk-jazz fusion scene at Scamps night club Leicester, England. We were way ahead of the pack. Funk, fusion and Latin jazz all Dayers in Notts, the northern soul crews upstairs on the big dance floor, jazz crews downstairs with more of a club feel. So many cool people and amazing dancers.
Sonny's not just a great drummer but also quite the joker. Saw him in Montreal some years ago, very friendly fellow. Unfortunately I forgot to ask him where he's picked that "majorette" trick with his sticks that doesn't look easy at all. Only other drummer I knew of that did that routinely without ever dropping a stick was the late drumming legend Neil Peart. Being compared with the best of the best is befitting of Sonny. I regard the gigs he does with Lee Ritenour (most of the time with Dave Grusin) as the best ones, Ritenour has the knack for drawing talent from those who have the most to offer. It's also obvious that the feeling of respect is mutual between those two.
Mareinthal's soloing chops are far better than the rest and this is coming from a keyboardist who idolized Lorber back in the old days. But, all sounds good. Glad I got a chance to see these guys live.
Jeff Lorber, Yellowjackets, Chick Corea Elektric band, and Rippingtons the 4 greatest jazz fusion musicians/bands, no one else comes close in that genre.
Gotta have Weather Report on any list of the greatest fusion bands. Josef Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco Pastorius! I’d put them ahead of the Rippingtons as a definitive fusion band.
Great, Mr Lorber, genius of jazz, your music is fantastic... Maestro yo escucho su música desde que tenía 18 años... Hace 38 años, Thanks for this performance, from México city
Remember Dennis Bradford real well on Jeff's earlier albums. He was fluid on the Black Ice track. Right there with Sonny. They have great cymbal work. That china accent on the fills is awesome.
Nate Phillips, YESSIR!!!! So versatile!!! He was the bassist for Pleasure, one of the most underrated Top 40 bands ever! It's no accident that Jeff Lorber has hired most of the former Pleasure band members that included Bruce Carter (drums), Marlan McClain (Guitar) and Dennis Springer (sax). I really miss the amazing Danny Wilson, bass player supreme!!! What happened to him???
Yes you do my friend!! I have been a fan from back in Portland in the mid 70's. It's all good buy check out some of his early improve albums. ( Oh ya...I mean CD's )
I think I like Eric playing on Jeff's projects more than any other sax players. Just seems like a natural fit to me. He's not my most favorite sax player but he seems to flow with Jeff's writing style the best.
I am ashamed to say that I have only just come across Mr Jeff Lorber and his pals in the past hour. I guess I have lots to discover.
yes you do.
listening to Jeff since 1978... yeah you got a lot of research to do bro
Listen to Soft Space

Go back to Toads Place or Water Sign.....Kenny Gorlick (AKA Kenny G) is and always has been a damn monster!!!!
9 years later, this STILL hits just right. Never fails to impress!
Loving how Eric phrases his bars!
Jeff is very generous in his compositions. Each one is helping the other sound better
excellent point!
Looks like these guys have played together. No overplaying, each guy is making the composition sound good.
Very underrated Drummer, Mr. Sonny Emory ! Simply Brilliant Gentleman !!
Yes - saw him at Ronnie Scott's - his wild family sitting next to us. Don't underestimate Eric Marienthal - best of all JL's fab reed men.
So much soul in this track. Great drummer Sonny.
The drummer- Sonny Emory- is one of the best of all time.
This group is the BEST incarnation of Jeff Lorber Fusion. I wish there were more videos of this specific group posted.
These guys are off the chain....skilful AND soulful, what's not to absolutely love about this!
Mr. Sonny Emory is very well rated and deserving the highest ratings! he drops a stick and you cant even notice!

Love Jeff Lorber still as good as ever. The drummer is awesome and all the musicians are top notch!
Professional musicians that play with soul and love of music
Sonny Emory monster😍

Great line-up! Heard the guys live, great memories. 👍❤
After all of these years, I am still inspired by Sonny's playing. Even back in the 6th grade, he was an amazing musician and friend.
Sonny Emory on drums OMG!!!❤
Sony is amazing, his musical mind is incredible, one of the greats
SONNY EMORY!
Is the man!
That was a tight solo!
umdiscodevinil p

OH YES!!! , THE BEST DAMN FUSION DRUMMER ON THIS PLANET, OR ANY OTHER" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BESTTTTTTTT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like Jeff Lorber since 1980 ! great drummer Sonny Emory. ! great musicians !
Sure looks like Calvin my bass player from Seattle 1984 on the drums..he was a jazz guy primarily..
Sheesh. Really, does playing and feel get any better? Groovalicious. Absolute precision. Monstrous playing.
Mareinthal's soloing chops are far better than the rest and this is coming from a keyboardist who idolized Lorber back in the old days. But, all sounds good. Glad I got a chance to see these guys live.
Eric!!!!! Mareinthal!!! Woah!!!!!!
Sony never over plays.
Very good!!!! Jeff, Nate, Sonny, Eric: Gracias por hacernos vibrar de gozo por tanta genialidad y excelencia!!! Gracias Dios los colme de amor!!
It has been nice watching Eric Marienthal develop over past 30 years. Boys GOT CHOPS! Jeff has always had great drummers. Still miss Dennis Bradford
Jeff Lorber , is absolute outstanding , an Eternal Maestro.
Sonny can sure lay down a great groove! Love his playing.
Awesome stuff! Been a Jeff Lorber fan since the 80's
Me too! Found him in college in 79! Been with him ever since.
Jeff Lorber, Yellowjackets, Chick Corea Elektric band, and Rippingtons the 4 greatest jazz fusion musicians/bands, no one else comes close in that genre.
Some great ones there!!
They all have great drummers driving rhythm section. Dave Weckl, Tony Morales, and the late Ricky Lawson.
Jeff Lorber's Sonny Emory and Dennis Bradford.
Gotta have Weather Report on any list of the greatest fusion bands. Josef Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco Pastorius! I’d put them ahead of the Rippingtons as a definitive fusion band.

To watch the masters at work, something for the eyes to behold, never get tired of watching

Great music and Band saw J.L.F. IN 86 NY great show and Bassist Nate Phillips formerly of Pleasure great R&b Jazz Funk Band
Oh yeah! Saw Sonny last year playing for Lee Ritenour. He is one of today's jazz giants.
What can ya say but wow gents!
I've been listening to JL since the late '70s. He just as good now as he was back then. Really good chops.
Jeff Lorber Fusion: Innovation and soul. Thanks for the vid.
Love Jeff Lorber.
I do too.

Excelente...Professional people at work at maximun high level of pure talents...
Combination of musical instruments are excellent.
brilliant by all especially sonny emory
This is about as good as it gets - these players and in this category of jazz. Reminds me of the great Yellowjackets a bit.
Brilliant as usual!
not to forget Eric on sax and Nate on bass,
awesome guys
Que gran equipo!!! Ese sostén de Philips siempre presente... la energía de Emory!!! Jeef y Eric, brillantes... Gracias por estas joyas.
Love Jeff, and well Sonny is the Master

That drummer is on point
Not quite my tempo. ;)
@@Poluxthefifth1 go back to pop music
I saw Jeff and Sony in different gigs, they were great, but they both in one is excellent on another level:D

Great song God bless
Wow!! pure class, I love this track.
Serious chops, all! Eric Mareinthal could make me a fan of the soprano sax.
Thank you !
Sensational.
you guys are great, amazing cover
I've just realised what a shit drummer I am. But I'm now inspired. Amazing!
That's what Sonny will do to you--either slap you up, or make you want to pawn your kit.
To feel outclassed by another musician and feel absolutely inspired by it to achieve greater heights is best feeling ever
Crazy, the Yamaha S90ES is his basis. So cool and solid. It is the prime keyboard from 2005 through 2016.
Outstanding...
Ох! красавцы! 7/8 супер.
Yep a LEGEND!
Yea , Jazz Fusion is not for the lite in chop. Hee. YOU go Sonny. Killer band.
Yes you do my friend!! I have been a fan from back in Portland in the mid 70's. It's all good buy check out some of his early improve albums. ( Oh ya...I mean CD's )

This brings back hardcore memories of Wave Race 64.

You don't think Marienthal's fit with Corea's Elektric Band was as good?
@@sanityinaseaofmadness7353 Chick knew exactly, why he played with Eric so many years. 👌❤
que bien que se escucha :)
I'm pretty sure this was at Iridium in NYC a couple yrs ago. I sat up front, @ watched this session.
yay!!!!!
Never knew sonny emory played with jeff!!!
This looks like Jazz Alley in Seattle I’m sitting in there waiting for Jeff to come on stage December 8,2021
holy… the timing on this song
とっても懐かしい。1978年頃、彼が音楽シーンにこの曲たちと共に登場したのを思い出す。その最初のアルバムは今も色あせていない。キープするべきアルバムだ。タイトルも「ジェフローバー・フュージョン」だった。
This is SICK... Mareinthal Smokes this tune like a pack of KOOLS, and Sonny doesn't even shift out of 2nd gear and makes this song his bitch...
