      addiction doesn't just step back, addiction doesn't listen to the users pleas and cries, addiction takes, and takes... he can disagree all he wants, but at the end of the day a user is controlled by the addiction, someone can yell at them all they want but all its gonna do it push them closer to their addiction, the only way you can help someone who is addicted is to get them help... but it will never cure them, they will be addicts until the day they die... you have to help them every day like a band aid... being critical towards an addict infront of millions will only worsen an addict, it won't help, and if you aren't looking to help than just stfu you might as well hand him a hit of whatever drug hes using

      Speeches like these are probably why this dude keeps relapsing. Yall keep giving him a pass.
      Hes been an addict since an adolescent, hes had multiple opportunities from different levels of his career. Everytime he messes up, people keep coddling him and remove the responsibility from him.
      Nobody is denying that it's difficult and nobody is denying that he has some type of mental illness, but damn bruh 5 suspensions? What workplace you know that pays you this much money and gives you that many chances to get your shit together?
      The dude has the resources and access to get help. This ain't some addict on the side of the street.
      Josh Gordon got himself addicted. It's up to him to get clean. Sympathy is fine, but SAS is right. This doesn't just affect Gordon and we gotta ask how many more chances does he get?

    As a former heroin addict (18yrs clean this January), I can see both sides of this argument. Both Stephen A and CC are right. Let me explain. Cris is talking about needing the tools to kick addiction which is true, but what you also need is the mindset to WANT to stay clean. That's Josh's issue and that's what Stephen A is pointing out. Addicts DON'T WANT to stay clean. They want to do anything to get that next fix and don't care how they are getting it. Now in Josh's case, his choices have cost him MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and a career as a possible Hall of Fame Wide Receiver. That self sabotage has cost not just him, but his family, the chance to be prosperous and that's why Stephen A says he's the biggest wasted talent ever and is right in his viewpoints aswell.
    But give me that choice...$20million to stop smoking for 10 or so years? I'll pack that bong or roll that spliff after my careers done. 👍 I got clean for $0, if it was for $20million I might've been more straight than before I touched a drop of alcohol! 🤣😂

      Terrance Cooper yeah he did but that’s the thing tho. Just because you have loved ones that have gone through it don’t mean you have greater understanding of it. Because you’re still not in the mind of the person going through it. Why do you think it hurts those loved ones so much? Because they’re helpless. They can’t have a full grasp what they’re dealing with in regards to the person directly affected. Only the person going through it knows regardless if your family or a stranger. He’s ignorant. The fact that he’s continually messing up should mean you should have greater compassion. Not the opposite because you should be greater concerned

    SAS coworkers dogpile on him just like Social Media. His views are his views. The problem is Gordon used "Mental illness" and it's a smokescreen for drug addiction. Gordon has had countless chances and SAS is passionately upset about Gordon's continued poor choices while having the greatest meal ticket a man can have in the palm of his hand. Addiction sucks, iv have been there. Mentally I knew exactly what I was doing. It is the chase for the high that is the mental battle. It's not illness, it's a lack of discipline. SAS has nothing to apologize for.

    • @i.b.ballin
      @i.b.ballin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      blackturkdog Everyone gets addicted to substances in different ways. Josh learned how to deal with social anxieties in middle school by smoking weed and using Xanax. In his situation, it was an extremely unhealthy way to cope with this stress at a very young age and clearly escalated into a much bigger issue. His brain learned how to escape these pressures by using at such a young age and I’m sure he’s dealing with chemical imbalances in his brain that effect decision making and rational behavior as a result of such ways to cope. This shit is mental health and addiction 101. I don’t know if Josh deals with anything more than anxiety and addiction, (co-occurring disorders for you uneducated buffoons) but neither do you. So it’s reckless to assume it’s just another bad decision. Who knows what he’s fighting? Irresponsible to assume that “he just likes to get high.” Substance use for that long can cause permanent damage to the brain. I’m not saying he shouldn’t face consequences for getting high, but I do believe he’s trying to escape inner demons and his brain constantly wants the “easy escape” he learned at a young age. People in addiction certainly make poor choices but no one knows what else is going on for sure. He certainly has my support to get help as it’s way more important, I don’t give any fucks about the timing. And to answer your question, Johnny Manziel was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression. Ryan Leaf became addicted to painkillers prescribed to him and fought suicidal thoughts. All got to addiction differently. All are fighting off chemical imbalances (diseases) in the brain that are more than addiction and are not choices. Any more brain busters?

IT'S A CHOICE AND A CHOICE ONLY!! I made the CHOICE to sniff coke. I made the CHOICE to stop sniffing coke. Addiction's not a disease, just like Cancer isn't a choice. I've been through D.O.C. twice. And they always take your blood to test for REAL diseases. Not once did my blood test come back saying I tested positive for addiction. If addiction is a disease. I better tell my girl to put a jacket on before she goes outside. Wouldn't want her to catch a heroine addiction. If u believe addiction is a disease. You're 7 flavors of stupid. They label it a "disease" so insurance companies will pay for the "treatment." It's about money. Not about being a legit disease. I guess addiction is the only "disease" that just magically poof, goes away when u stop using. Smh people are fucking idiots.*

    • @kennieapilli6803
      @kennieapilli6803 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pope On A Rope MADMAX MAREK You're both correct and incorrect. Everything in life is about choice but the ability to choose well in multiple areas of life is dependent on much more than free will. Cancer for example is the consequential effect of an unfortunate sequence of events but all of the events are chosen. Smoke cigarettes and lung cancer may be in your future. Be a man that doesn't take care of his prostrate and you die from that cancer as well. This one's painful: be a child birthed through an unfortunate sequence of genetic complications resulting from a potent sequence of mutative events and you're born with or develop cancer in your first few years. If you're a woman that doesn't adhere to the factors that minimize the risk of breast-cancer(a combination of avoidable factors that creates cellular dysfunction within mammary glands) that state of dis-ease could befall you. Decide to drink alcohol and you could die from that or allow that mixed with a other things to hurt you in other ways. It is all choice but the ability to choose well in multiple areas takes much more than just will power to choose well. Even more damning is if it the ability to choose well doesn't start as soon as a child first open their eyes and can begin learning by watching mom and dad exemplify it well then the stakes are already against them as soon as he or she is one second old. Doesn't mean they can't learn later, just means it's going to be harder. And even after seeing and being taught well doesn't mean you will still learn meaning choose well. We never know if what we've learned is sufficient until we get challenged. It takes a regenerated heart to recover from the realization of poor choices. Those that keep making poor choices and try to simply will their way through better decisions without learning how to choose better is no different than a passenger making his way to the cockpit and being told to will his intellect to fly the plane. We've all been challenged and sounds like we've triumphed. Josh is challenged but clearly he hasn't triumphed hopefully YET. He does have a choice to make but what's even more challenging is that he first has to learn how to choose well. To do this he needs help. No different than a child does. No one is immune to this. If you start a new job you'll need guidance in order to learn about the systems and protocols in place in order for you to handle your responsibilities, live up to expectations and coexist in that environment. If not you will be cast out unfortunately. Upon learning all that, a choice still has to be made not just daily but every single second of the day. The ability to choose well in multiple areas of our lives every single second is not easy. The ones that feel like they do that very well need to realize how special that is. The ones that don't need to realize how hard it is and to prioritize nothing else until they figure that out first. Josh's responsibilities shouldn't have been allowed to grow to this extent. Being a professional athlete, being within the top 3% of physically capable human beings is extremely demanding on the mind and the body. It looks like a game to everyone else, it looks like it's fun and a walk in the park. It's a very demanding job that requires very good decision making capabilities. There are no diseases just things we've chosen to do that have created a level of dis-ease. Be deficient in vitamin C for a long period of time and weaken your immune system you'll create an environment that takes your living bacteria(not something that just came out of nowhere) and makes is very easy for your body to be weakened internally or by a host of other external but also created factors. We hear of cold and flu season like a monster that flies in for a few months then flies of only to return and terrorizes us ironically at the same time next year when the temperature and atmospheric pressure are at a certain point, we don't sweat as much and rid our body of toxins, harvest season lacks in certain minerals and vitamins while we've taken care of our bodies a certain way before the attack happens. No diseases my friends, just us choosing if we know how or being taken advantage of if we don't know how. One could argue that the inability to choose is a disease. The inability to choose well leads to a state of dis-ease. You're both right but also incorrect. Congratulations to you both on being able to choose well. There are a lot of factors that you must be very grateful for to lead you to this point. Pray that those struggling can simply start with the decision to forsake everything else until they learn how to choose well to rid them of this constant state of dis-ease. Josh not having football is the best thing that could happen to him right now. I worry that there could be more time spent feeding his addiction as opposed to learning how to be better. He has to decide to rid himself of this constant state of dis-ease. If or when he does that, the frustration we all feel that resulted in these posts will be slightly less in comparison to the billions that are still struggling this challenge. God bless you both!

      Trying something and being addicted is two different things my friend. I've tried drugs and liquor but never got addicted because my body didn't like the feeling. Now you can CHOOSE to fight it, but like CC said you must be provided with the RIGHT tools to fight it. But the addiction never goes away, that's why you have folks relapsing after being sober for 20-30+ years.

      I agree with Stephen A but Go inject yourself with some heroin and find out first hand if addition is simply just a choice.
      Addition is a disease that affects your ability to make rational decisions. People who eat meat are killing themselves just the same but they won’t quit eating meat knowing fully that according to the World Health Organization (WHO) eating meat causes cancer.
      When you give up eating meat, then you won’t be a hypocrite, because it’s likely you’re addicted to meat and don’t know it.

    I agree with Smith. What people fail to realize is that you can't save the world. Not everyone is going to have a "happy ending" in life. Too many people look at life through rose colored glasses. Josh Gordon is probably going to be one of the people who does not make it. There's a reason why drug and alcohol counselors have jobs. There's a reason why jails are inhabited. There are people who, no matter how much you try to help them and no matter how much sympathy you may have for them, will just not ever kick their drug habit. Josh Gordon is probably one of those people.

      Where in my statement did I say that I would give up? My stance is pretty clear. No, I wouldn't give up, but the fact is that, yes, there are a ton of people who don't make it, no matter how much help you may give them. You really need to learn how to read with comprehension before you comment.

      But Stephen A is right at the end of the day no matter our outlook on weed(if it’s just weed with josh) and the facts that support weed the NFL and other major sports leagues won’t take it off the controlled substance list which is a different argument we need to have and the players union should address in the next collective bargaining agreement, but knowing that and you still manage to smoke that’s unacceptable, like people say weed isn’t addictive so that’s more of an indictment on josh gordon you mean to tell me something you aren’t physically or psychologically addicted to your causing to make you lose millions come on man. We can’t say he’s being harsh or coming outta pocket when this is joshes 4th time getting suspended for this, addiction is a disease yes but one that has a cure rehabilitation; and he should be at least be held accountable for not going to rehab over the past 4 years in which he played around 10-12 games it’s more about the game for me with josh it’s the money he’s losing that he could’ve had not only himself but the next generation in his family used to stay out from the hood but instead he’s tumbling down and it’s sad

You all need to educate yourself. Man if only the world were as perfect as Stephen A. Smith!! Mental health issues are not a choice. And I’m not talking about addiction. I’m talking about the other illnesses associated with addiction that Stephen A. BOZO doesn’t talk about not even a single time. I agree with Stephen A-1000 percent. First off, coming from someone who suffers from mental health issues, Josh used that as a smokescreen to take attention away from the fact that his ass was getting suspended for the umpteenth time. Also, the NFL and the Browns offered Josh numerous times their help in getting him treatment. If people with less resources than Josh can find the strength to overcome their addiction, why can’t he?

Most of the time you people become addicted to something knowing the addictive properties and risks of what they’re taking. Their reasons are their own but don’t sit there and treat them as if they’re the only one suffering and it doesn’t affect those around them, especially when (as is the case with both Cris Carter and Josh Gordon) it’s been well documented the people around them TRIED TO GET THEM ALL THE HELP THEY COULD

    This is another situation in which Stephen A. Smith’s emotion(anger) overrides his intellect. He is better than to respond like some angry child. I don’t think anyone has absolved Josh Gordon in his culpability with his addictions. This whole conversation has shifted to how addiction takes over a persons life, and how they rationalize their actions or behaviors to aid their addiction. An addict is an addict for life, there are just hours,days, months, years of sobriety that an addict tries to achieve. When Josh Gordon got suspended the first time I was with S. Smith, but as it kept happening it was clear that there is more to it than Gordon’s inability simply just stop smoking weed or other drugs. I actually think this is Gordon’s coping mechanism for something that has happened in his life prior to football. Some addicts become that way by using drugs or alcohol to cope with trauma. As the saying goes “don’t judge a person, they can have a struggle you know nothing about”. Josh Gordon needs help that is for certain. It is clear that Stephen A. Smith has issues such as anger that he is dealing with, that seem to get the best of him quite regularly. We all have a struggles to deal with some of us just cope a little bit better. You can have sympathy for the people who are the victims of the addict without berating the addict. Stephen A. Smith needs to check his ego he is better than this.

  • @dennisgadulka6530

    For the average Joe or Jane, failing a drug test makes it almost impossible for them to get a decent for the rest of their lives. Josh Gordon has been given chance after chance, but keeps squandering them. On top of that, he's using "mental health" as a smokescreen for his addiction, which is an insult to folks who truly suffer from mental health issues. The NFL even made special concessions for Gordon that they didn't make for anyone else. They reduced his 2014 suspension from a full season to 10 games, eased him back into the NFL in 2017, and let him check into a rehab clinic this past summer and show up late to Browns training camp with no fine or punishment. Gordon has been given chances that most folks could only dream of being given, yet continues to fuck up.

Gordon put is self in the position, and it’s dumb to think that someone suffering from depression/ anxiety(which btw is a real mental illness) are in the in the same boat as Gordon. Gordon tried to make it seem like this wasn’t his fault and it’s pathetic.
