They are like technical fighters. Most of the time, they handle things calmly and quietly. When I and My kai were in the middle of the passage of the mountain, a huge bear appeared; she, with no second thought, attacked the nose of the bear, so it ran away quickly. Afterwards, she just kept on going up to the mountain, as if nothing had happened when my heart was pouncing. lol
Good little overview! I’m a Brit living in Japan and just got a kaiken pup in January, I also got my hunting and gun licenses this past year and aiming to take him out as my companion. A minor note the Japanese serow is now off limits to hunters due to population decrease back in the 60s, and although they are now back at healthy levels it is unlikely they will become a huntable species again any time soon. They are typically used for hunting animals stronger than themselves (boar and bear) not think likes regular deer, and are used as lone hunting dogs as opposed to pack hounds sniffing out prey and driving it across territory towards awaiting hunters. If you’d like to see some footage of this style my breeder actually has his own very popular channel, search ‘Japanese hunting kaidog’ on TH-cam and he’ll pop up!
My wife and I have 3 Kaiken dogs. indoor dogs. They are mostly as reported here. Strong prey drive, etc. the only thing I would disagree on here is that they are quite stubborn . training is easy on some indoor things, intelligent< yes, but they will bolt off-leash and recall is difficult. Outdoors they change a lot. You have to figure where they went. Usually, a friends (dogs) house. Yes, you can get them back but they love to bolt if you'te not careful. They love all family and are zero aggressive to family and visitors, totally trustworthy in that way, but they need lot's of exercise and will not come back if called--unless they want to... Very loving and love affection and five affection. If you want to know more details, please ask. Males tend to be aggressive on walks to other dogs, females, not. In our experience. And they shed heaps, twice a year.
Let's hear it for all the original Kai Ken owners who let us use their images/clips in the video. Check out more of their content on their respective Instagram profiles. What do you like the most about Kai Kens? Let us know in the comments!🐕
My boy is 15 this year. He’s still energetic , no hip issues, eye sight is perfect, ear infection was fixed with drops for a couple weeks but he does have allergies which we do monthly antigen shots. Funny story, I thought he was a pit for the last 14 years. My new vet said no way he’s a pit if he’s 14 , so we go in to our appointment and the vet pulls up a kaiken video on TH-cam. Just like this one . He was like was like 15 year old pits are very very uncommon, you are a kaiken buddy. So now I’m looking back on the hunting and scavenging my boy did and still does. He’s non-stop constantly sniffing out critters, rabbits, whatever on our hikes. Never ending. He’s got like 30 confirmed kills with backyard possums which kinda bums out because I like possums but it’s his breed to kill and hunt so I’m at amends with it. I think I’ll be on the look out for another loving kaiken after my seeet boy passes. He’s that great of a dog. He’s laying on me now
@2:06 Nothing to do with the tail. Shishigata (猪型=boar-shaped) refers to a figure that is stocky i.e. thick body and short legs, whereas shikagata (鹿型=deer-shaped) refers to a slender body with longer legs. Shikagata Kaiken were found to be more agile and suited when chasing the prey, jumping over dangerous rocky slopes. Thus, it is said that the shishigata Kais have been bred out.
When my adopted dog gave birth to a puppy I thought it was a rotwiller but it ended up being a kai ken. I got very happy as I just saw this video and also by knowing they are rare.(BTW I live in India) ❤
Absolutely love my Kai Ken! She's so loving and will come into my lap for attention, and she absolutely loves other dogs and people. I will say she is definitely mischievous, can smell food anywhere and loves getting into the trash, and WILL destroy your house if she has too much energy
This past summer (2022) we adopted what was said to be a Shiba Inu Chow mix. from Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue. At first meeting, I questioned the breed mix. Through our research, we believe this dog is NOT a Shiba-Chow mix, but a Kai Ken. We have had Shibas in our family for over 20 years. This dog is a Kai Ken and we couldn't be happier !!!!! He is strong and loveable, high prey drive and just a character. He has settled in well with our 2 Goldens. I would just like to have a genetic test done but don't know where to start.
My vet stated she thinks my dog is a boxer mix but while walking her, a neighbor asked If she was a kai ken. Did a little research and i'm starting to think she is. She has the brittle color, facial and body structure, etc. I might bring it up on her next vet appointment
The anime mentioned is this is very specifically why I want a kai ken and fully intent to get one someday! But dont it wasnt a light decision. I also will have a very active lifestyle and plan to thoroughly train him, perhaps even to hunt small game with me.
I love my Kaiken but I must warn people interested in the breed that they are not for everyone. If you cannot exercise them enough and give them a lot of your time, you will probably be rehoming the dog within a year.

I love my Kai ken she is extremely loyal and a mommy’s girl, loves climbing trees and playing in the snow. ❤

We have 7 year old Kai ken here in philippines. Ours is mean to others specially to other dogs and animals. We only keep him on leash

I appreciate your transparency.👏
